Over the last 10 years our economy has undergone a massive transformation fueled by data.

The use of data and personal information is now essential for businesses to create new products and potential revenue, analyse trends and understand complex issues or behaviours.

This shift is fast emerging as the most significant enabler of growth for companies

This shift to a ‘Personal Information Economy’ (PIE) is transforming the value businesses create and how they reach and interact with customers. This has universal significance and impact, affecting all industries from retail to financial services, health to transport, energy to public services.

This year’s theme is all about the emerging world of Me2B, and the need for businesses to accelerate.

The past decade has seen a profound change in business: The balance of power has shifted between customers and businesses— putting the power of personal information in customers’ hands.

Today it is critical to respond to this new world, or to anticipate it and get ahead of the pack. We at Ctrl-Shift believe that there is more than B2C or B2B to describe the way companies and customers relate to each other. We now see a Me2B model: The customer directs the relationship, and businesses need to think first and foremost from the customer’s point of view.

/ What used to work, doesn’t work anymore!

So what happened? Have our needs changed over the years, forcing customers and businesses out of sync? Or are companies today simply failing to deliver on the needs customers have always had?

For many years, people have largely categorised businesses in two models, B2B and B2C. B2B organisations sell to other businesses; B2C organisations sell to mass-market consumers. These legacy models were driven by the only capabilities open to them, broadcast and mass marketing engagement. Businesses controlled and directed the relationship: They held the power and managed the relationship.

However, the world has and is continuing to change at pace. The old world of the 100% push model has evolved.

We now live in the mobile age where information travels with us and is at our fingertips: internet enabled payments, the cloud, Big Data, programmatic ad buying and machine learning. This is now moving to data led decisioning, dynamic journey management and marketing performance management solutions.

Technologies are transforming business models, the influence of social networks, and regulation moving towards businesses, means they must see the relationships with their customers as a two-way channel. Customers, whether they are businesses or consumers, have access to limitless information about competing goods and services.

All these trends add up to a new reality: Customers and businesses share the power.

The sustainable business model today, therefore, is not B2C or B2B but Me2B. Customers participate in the relationships and drive how they want to interact with the business. Businesses must shift their thinking to drive decision making from the customer’s point of view. There are some major implications of this reversal, threatening to some organisations but exhilarating and business defining to others.

To succeed in the Me2B era businesses must put customers’ needs at the center and see information as a tool where the point of integration is the customer. Welcome to the world of Me2B.
