Me
A long time ago…
but Me
Ridiculous
Where to begin?• Options:
– Things that shaped me– Obsessions– Things about me
• Solution:– Pastiche
What shaped me?
Why not talk about that?
Is too much, I know, for the meager word Czeslaw Milosz, Unattainable Earth, p.15
What I pursue
• I want to know why I think what I think.
Obsessions
Torn between…
• Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations we can perform without thinking about them. – Alfred North Whitehead
• We are living now, not in the delicious intoxication induced by the early successes of science, but in a rather grisly morning-after, when it has become apparent that what triumphant science has done hitherto is to improve the means for achieving unimproved or actually deteriorated ends. - Aldous Huxley
What does that mean?
• I think that technology (which includes knowledge) enables new social forms (models of government and economics) and those social forms enable new human activity. Unfortunately, this complicates the existence of group goals and identity.
• Case in point: Mob Rules (the law of fives) – Mark Pesce
Things about me
• Likes being a housewife, cooking, cleaning
• Likes playing blues guitar
• Music obsessive, 20000+ songs, legal liability, of course I haven’t listened to all of them
• Likes skateboarding (and jogging, weightlifting)
• Spends way too much time thinking about programming languages (lately)
Why the hell are you doing this?
Fear of my early youth: that I grow up, i.e.,
that I lose intensity in pursuing things of the
mind. – Czeslaw Milosz, Unattainable Earth,
