on plant and soil sciences, resource conservation and wildlife

behavior. The “classroom in the woods” is located on 600 acres

just west of the PPG complex and includes more than 10,000

feet of trails. Naturelab provides hands-on learning through

field trip opportunities for local schools and educational groups.

Chozen HallChozen Hall, located at the corner of McNeese and Ryan streets,

is a former residence hall that is being revitalized and will

reemerge as a new one-stop shop for prospective students.

Bringing together several offices currently located in three

buildings will provide for a more efficient admissions process.

Alumni AssociationThe number one goal of the Alumni Association is to offer innovative

McNeese FoundationIncorporated in 1965, the original mission of the McNeese Foundation was to raise funds to support endowments for student scholarships. Through the years, the Foundation’s mission expanded to include support for endowed professorships and awards for teaching excellence, cultural programming, research and other specific needs that are critical for McNeese to remain a strong and viable university. You can become a McNeese Foundation Circle member with an annual contribution beginning at the $100 level. For membership levels and benefits, visit www.mcneesefoundation.org/giving and then click on “Memberships” or call the Foundation Office at 475-5588.• Nov. 8 - Board of Directors Meeting• Feb. 21 - Board of Directors Meeting• May 9 - Board of Directors Meeting• Spring Scholarship Donor/Student Brunch to be scheduled.

Online DegreesMcNeese offers several online, accelerated, baccalaureate degree programs through the CALL (Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana) program. Almost 300 students are enrolled in these programs – criminal justice, sociology, sociology with a concentration in family and child studies, RN to BSN in nursing, and management. McNeese will soon offer a new, 100% online, Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational leadership with a concentration in strategic and global communication as part of a collaborative effort by the nine universities in the University of Louisiana System.

The College of Nursing holds a pinning ceremony on the Thursday before fall and spring graduations for students receiving their Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing. Approximately 80 percent of the nurses working in Lake Charles and the five-parish area are McNeese graduates.

The McNeese Center for the Advancement

of Meat Production and Processing (CAMPP)

is one of the few facilities of its kind in the

United States. The 7,350 square-foot meat

processing facility is located on 16 acres just

off I-10 near Lacassine and serves as a hands-

on teaching and research facility focused on

the agricultural and food science industries.

Education programs at the center support

workforce development by preparing

McNeese students for a wide variety of jobs

in the agricultural and food science industry.

The CAMPP facility is unique because it

focuses on meat processing and all of

the related aspects including packaging,

preservation, marketing, transportation and

food safety.

McNeese is also using the facility for

community outreach, including clinics and

field trips for area high school FFA groups and

to provide workforce training workshops and

continuing education seminars on food safety,

basic meat processing, product preparation,

packaging and food industry marketing.

There is also equipment for sausage making

and custom meat processing, commercial

refrigeration equipment and a retail sales

area. McNeese hopes to soon offer a limited

range of fresh beef, pork and lamb products

for retail sale.

Depending on their work schedules, practicing engineers may skip one or more sessions without losing any credits earned. Certificates can be completed within 12 to 18 months. Deborah Brevoort’s play, “Women of Lockerbie,” gives a powerful voice to a disturbingly contemporary anguish – how to respond to suffering caused by a terrorist attack. A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie, Scotland, looking for her son’s remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103 on Dec. 21, 1988. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim’s families. The play is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely fictional.

“Almost, Maine,” a romantic comedy by John Cariani, opens the spring season. Searching for love on a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Exploring the foibles of love, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare contains some wonderfully lyrical expressions of lighter Shakespearean themes, most notably those of love, dreams and the stuff of both - the creative imagination itself. Written in the mid-1590s, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of his strangest and most delightful creations. Shakespeare takes the audience back and forth through the human world and the fairie world with wonderfully endearing characters - with all of the quirkiness of humanity.

New Admissions Standards

Changes in Louisiana public university admissions requirements for first-time freshmen, graduates of home schools, out-of-state high schools, transfer students and non-traditional age students are having an impact on four-year college enrollment numbers statewide. The changes for first-time freshmen include calculating the high school grade point average only on the “core curriculum” that increased from 17.5 to 19 units and includes an additional natural science or math class and a social science class. Also effective this fall, students wishing to transfer to McNeese are meeting higher standards as set by the Board of Regents. Transfer students must complete a minimum of 18 hours of college-level courses including a college level English and math course. The previous requirement was completion of 12 or more hours.

Quick Facts McNeese awards nearly 70% of the public four-year college degrees earned by residents of Southwest Louisiana. Students who graduated during 2009-2010 had an 86% acceptance rate into medical schools—double the national average of 43%. McNeese is one the few four-year universities, and the only university in the University of Louisiana System to have a model chemical plant to train future engineers and technicians. More than 13,000 students have graduated from McNeese in the past 10 years. More than 70% of the educators in Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis parishes earned a degree from McNeese. McNeese nursing graduates make up approximately 80% of all nurses working in Lake Charles and the five-parish area. Approximately one-third of all engineers working in the local petrochemical industry are McNeese graduates.

The Harold and Pearl Dripps Department of Agricultural Sciences maintains approximately 1,000 acres of farmland in three operating farms located in Allen and Calcasieu parishes. Students participate in hands-on learning for careers in agribusiness and farm operations. In addition to growing rice, corn, soybeans and hay, livestock including cattle, sheep, goats and swine are produced and raised on the farms.EEO/AA/ADA McNeese is a member of the University of Louisiana System.
