The Club was formed in 1956, the first of its kind in Aust ralia, with the object of Preserving, Restor ing and using Veteran, Vintage and Post Vintage Motorcycles.

Mem bership is open to all and owning a suitable machine is not a pre- requisite.

Machines m anufactured pr ior to January 1 st 1 9 6 6 are eligible for Club Events.

The Club has a st rong fam ily or ientat ion and features m any social act iv it ies as well as Runs and technical help.

The Club m eets on the second Tuesday of each m onth in the Payneham R& SL Club, 3 6 0 Payneham Road, Payneham com mencing at 8.00 p.m .

Annual Fees are due by the 30 th June each year.

Stephen is current ly working on a book about Collector Motorcycles I n Aust ralia. He is working with Ken Stepnell who has put out 2 sim ilar books on Collector cars in Aust ralia. Next month Stephen will be in Adelaide for the Bay to Birdwood run, and is planning to stay for the following week and organise photographs of bikes for the book and would like any member with a suitable motorcycle to make contact with him for a photo. The book will cover motorcycles from the earliest days t ill 1980. I n all there should be 1,000 to 1,100 different bikes in the book. Criter ia for bike se-lect ion is - presentable examples of bikes in good to bet ter condit ion or original condit ion bikes., BUT NO projects.

I f you have seen the colour photo-graphs in 'The James Flood book of Motorcycles' you will have an idea of what I 'd like to capture/ create.

McLaren Vale—Tiddlers r ide—Sunday 2 6 th August 2 0 1 2 .

Tony Morrisset and Jim Mot t illo really know how to turn on a bight and sunny day for the 2nd McLaren Vale Tiddlers r ide. I m ust thank Michael Scarpantoni for allowing us to use the Oxenberry Farm carpark and prem ises as the base for the annual t iddlers r ide.

The weather bureau was r ight , that after 3 m iserable days of rain, hail, snow and driving winds, Sunday turned out to be a lovely sunny day with a slight chill in the air.

Tony briefed the member on what to expect on the r ide and warned that two hills will be a challenge for the t iddlers. The first hill, Willunga hill proved to be a nightmare for Colin Benn and his 1920 Harley David-son and guest Pete and Deb Fagan and their 1914 Triumph as both failed to m ake the clim b. Pete Fagan joined us later on about the last 5kms of the r ide demonst rat ing that the Triumph’s problem was fixed, but Colin st ill had running problems and remained at the base. I t was noted that Bob Gill dusted of his 1937 Royal Enfield for the occasion, & Daryl Rosser m iss judged the fuel consum pt ion of his 1924 AJS.

We gathered at the top of Willunga Hill and waited for John Mills to complete the back-up t railer dut ies before we ventured off thru the hills and dales before a brief stop at Meadows for coffee and food. Along the way we encountered another steep hill, but every one arr ived at Meadows.

We left the high count ry and headed back on a twist ing and winding road back into McLaren Flat and eventually arr ived at Oxenberry Farm where Jim Mot t illo had freshly cooked sausages and onions and soft dr inks at the ready.

I forgot to m ent ion that when Tony and I were adm ir ing Michael Scarpantoni’s CZ, Tony not iced a bit of grapevine twig stuck between the Bakelite spark pug cap and the cylinder head. Tony im m ediately removed the offending bit of wood and told Michael he found this and could he throw it away? ‘NO it keeps the bike running’ and raced over and quickly placed it back, explaining the bit of wood keeps the spark plug cup on the sparkplug, another Scarpantoni invent ion.

Tiddler Run – Sunday 2 6 th August 2 0 1 2 —Rally Report

I n the two weeks leading up to the Tiddler Run the rain seemed never to stop. McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu were constant ly cold, windy and wet . I t looked ext remely unlikely that we would be fortunate enough to have even a few hours of clear sky! We needn’t have worr ied. Sunday 26 th August was the only day of sunshine in what otherwise was a prolonged, m iserable, wet August ! By 9 a.m . the first bikes and t railers were arr iving at the Scarpantoni fam ily’s Oxenberry Winery in McLaren Vale. Our efforts in encouraging members to “bring out their lightweights” certainly paid off. By the t im e of the rally start we had over 30 bikes and another ten or so moderns with t iddlers comprising about half the num ber. Absolutely stand-out m achines varied from what was described as a “gorgeous” two speed, 98cc James to Bob Gill’s exquisite hand-change, external flywheel Royal Enfield. Of course there was also the usual brace of BSA C11s, a Bantam or two ( including Jane Clarke’s im possibly speedy 1949 D1 called “Nigel” ) and many other interest ing and varied machines including a few veterans. The rally route was prom ised to be challenging and proved to be so. The early clim b up Old Willunga Hill Road saw two machines on the t railer briefly but eventually all reached the summit . We then followed Range Road along the escarpm ent of the Willunga Basin. The tem perature dropped m arkedly and I wonder how many r iders not iced the paddock with over 30 kangaroos (by m y count ) on our r ight ! Riding down Wickham ’s Hill Road ( the old motorsport hill climbing venue) was an exercise of careful brake and clutch with a couple of reverse camber corners thrown in. Along the Kangarilla Road and back up to Kuipto Forest and into Meadows for a coffee stop.

While in Meadows a photo opportunity presented itself when a member’s Harley Davidson 1920 Sport Twin Model W was lined up next to a new Harley Davidson V-Rod equipped with an afterm arket supercharger! A bystander pointed out that 92 years separated the m achines in age. Few other, if any, m anufacturers can claim that genuine pedigree! I ’m sure there will be members ready to prove me wrong on that one! A brisk run had us back at Oxenberry Winery where Jim Mot t illo had prepared a delicious sausage sizzle which was enjoyed with som e excellent wine provided by the Scarpantonis.

Thanks must , as always, go to the Scarpantoni fam ily – part icular ly Michael – for their great hospitalit y and use of their wonderful venue. Also thanks to Jim Mot t illo who seems to do all the cooking for our southern runs and never gets to enjoy the r ide! Thanks also to the m any m embers who ventured south and m ade the day a resounding success!

South Australia Police Historical Society visit—Sunday 16th September.

On Sunday the 16th, members will v isit the South Aust ralian Police Histor ical Museum at the Thebarton Police Barracks at the corner of Port Road and Gaol Road at Thebarton.

We are r iding and driving our vehicles to the Barracks being there at 9.30am for a 10am visit .

Cost of the day is $ 5 . This which includes a tour of the Museum and a Devonshire Tea afterwards. Numbers are required at the September meet ing.

Parking— Please drive into Thebarton Barracks ent rance off Gaol Road and drive between the building as seen in the photograph.
