Daar was

ons o uitvee was hulle terug.

    s Pheifer.

    Faizel Adams, gemeenskapsleier, s hulle

het lank vir n oplossing gewag.

Ons is bly daar is nou n daadwerklike

plan. Ekwerk soggens vroeg enbaie dae sien

ek hoe mense en veral jong kinders bevrees

is wanneer hulle oor die brug stap.

    combination of vigilance, luck, coop-

    eration and pure determinationmade

sure that two alleged car robbers are

    in custody.

    Chairperson of the Bothasig Community

Policing Forum (CPF), Neal de Wit, and his

wife, Jenny, were recently doing crime pre-

vention patrols in Rosendal Street in Both-

asig when they noticed a blue Volkswagen

Golf with two occupants. While cruising

past he noticed another Golf further up in

    the street.

    According to police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Jacques Mostert, De Wit ap-

    proached the second vehicle.

When he came closer, the two men that

were standingnext to the car started towalk

away from the car towards the blue Golf.

They got into the car and drove away, says

    Mostert.

De Wit raised the alarm. He called the

police, law enforcement and all the neigh-

bourhood watch members that were at that

moment participating in a combined crime

prevention operation in Bothasig. He drove

a different route hoping to cut the car off at

another exit, but when he got there the car

    was nowhere to be found.

He then went back to check on the white

Golf that was left behind. When he got there

he found that the two samemennoticed ear-

lier had returned and were busy with the

    vehicle, says Mostert.

By that time Michael Meyer and Dan di

    Trapani from the Edgemead Neighbour-

    hood Watch had joined him.

They proceeded to keep the men found

at the vehicle there, as the indication was

that they had tried to steal the vehicle. Dur-

ing this time the blue Golf was not seen, but

De Wit was informed by the police that the

car was in the same street but that it drove

off when they passed it on the way.

    Warrant Officer Johan Esterhuizen

from the Bothasig police and law enforce-

ment officer Jennifer Smit had an idea

where to go and look for the vehicle. They

    found theblueGolfwith implements to com-

mit theft out ofmotor vehicles inside aswell

as a cellular phone belonging to one of the

suspects found at thewhite Golf, and arrest-

ed the occupants. The two suspects found at

the white VW Golf were also arrested and

detained for theft of motor vehicle.

Everyone detained has appeared in Good-

    wood court.

    Police station commander, Lieutenant

Colonel Patrick Jacobs, praised the com-

munity for their support in the fight against

crime and expressed a special word of

thanks to the members of the CPF and local

    neighbourhoodwatches for their assistance

with the ongoing crime prevention opera-

tions. This is a case in point that when ev-

erybody works together we can win the

    fight against crime, says Jacobs.

    When seven-year-old Tyrone Siljeur from

Bonteheuwel got a crayon stuck in his ear

earlier this month, his parents went into a

bit of a panic, but help was at hand.

They took him to a private doctor, but a

small piece remained and he was referred

to the Red Cross Childrens Hospital.

    Thanks to some generous sponsorship

    from Woolworths and MySchool, Tyrone

will underwent a small procedure under an-

aesthetic to have the crayon removed.

If you are part of the MySchool initiative,

you played your part when you did your

    Christmas shoppingatWoolworths over the

festive season. This led to the donation of

R400 000 that was handed to the Childrens

Hospital Trust, the fundraising arm of Red

    Cross last week.

The donation has been used by the trust

to purchase specialist ear, nose and throat

(ENT) equipment that will enable the hospi-

tal each year to help save the lives of ten

    children with life-threatening ear diseases

and prevent hearing loss in 750 children.

Tyrones mom Marlene and dad Mornay

were very happy that their son was finally

going to have a clear ear canal once again.

We are so grateful to the Red Cross Chil-

    drens Hospital, MySchool and Woolworths

for the equipment that allows for these

    types of operations, said Mornay.

I dont know what we would have done

otherwise, and I know that Tyrone was in

    very good hands.

    The Woolworths Christmas Giving cam-

paign was supported by international mu-

sic sensation Pharrel Williams, and funds

were raised as a special additional donation

every time a customers swiped their My-

    School MyVillage MyPlanet and their

    linked Woolworths cards.

Woolworths and MySchool are such val-

ued supporters of the Childrens Hospital

Of

Hier is nie

    n stortingsterrein binne stapafstand nie.

Nie almal het motors waarmee hulle

vullis kan wegry nie, so mense gooi net

pleister is. Wat moet mense dink van ons

    Joyous apologies for church noise

    BRENDEN RUITER

    @ruitervaniewind

The noise level of an event held at a church

twoweeks agowas reasonable, says a repre-

    sentative of the church.

TygerBurger reported on the issue last

week (Kerkrumoer skande, TB 4 May).

Some residents of Tygerdal were upset

after they were kept awake from the noise

emanating from a concert at the church,

    Joyous Celebration.

They were also furious with people park-

ing in their driveways. Some even went as

far as threatening to go to the police.

    Riana Joubert, spokesperson of the

Friend of God Church, denied the claims.

Despite two complaints from local resi-

dents about noise emanating from the audi-

    torium during theMTN Joyous Celebration

2016 annual event, tests indicate that the

noise was reasonable. Any gospel event of

this nature will have some noise impact on

    the immediate environment. This MTN

event was a permitted and controlled event

approved by the City of Cape Town.

She added the event organisers provided

their own sound and technical equipment.

Joubert also responded to the claimof one

resident who said they found beer bottles

strewn around the church premises after

    the event.

    We definitely do

    not permit or sell al-

    coholic beverages

    on our premises.

    What happens out-

    side our perimeters

    is unfortunately be-

    yond our control.

    Despite the fact

    that the church said

    the noise was rea-

    sonable, the orga-

    niser of the event

    sent a letter of apolo-

    gy to Fernando

    Smith, one of the ag-

    grieved residents.

    He left a letter in

    my postbox apolo-

    gising for the noise

    and the discomfort

    residents experienced, says Smith.

In the letter, Sharif Baker, production

    manager of the event, writes:

On behalf of MTN Joyous Celebration

and Friend of God Church we would like to

profess our sincerest apologies for the in-

convenience caused to you and your family

by the inconsideration of some of our pat-

rons whilst attending our event. We would

like you to know that first and foremost we

are a church and are cognisant at all times

of our neighbours and that we must be re-

spectful of all around us. Therefore, we felt

it a must to present this apology and wish

only but sincerest blessings for you and

your family and trust that we have not

spoilt your Freedom Day celebrations too

    much, reads the letter.

he City of Cape Towns Social Develop-

    ment and Early Childhood Develop-

    ment Directorate has recruited and

trained nearly 400 people in this financial

year to participate in its home-based care

    programme.

According to a statement, the directorate

started the initiative in 2014 as part of the

Vulnerable Groups Programme, to lend a

hand to elderly residents in need of assist-

ance around the home, but also companion-

    ship.

    The home-based caregivers programme

employs workers through the Citys Expand-

ed Public Works Programme (EPWP) who

render social care services through psycho-

    social support, companionship, housekeep-

ing and light household duties as well as re-

    ferrals to other social services.

The caregivers offer their services to sen-

iors in their home environment and at old-

    age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residents

signed up for the programme. Last year that

number more than doubled to 5557, while

this year saw a high level of interest again,

prompting the directorate to revise its target

    of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completed their

    training and are providing services.

    Maycomember for social development and

    early childhood development, Suzette Little,

says this speaks to the vulnerability of elder-

ly residents many of whom can no longer

do things for themselves, like cleaning the

house or even their personal grooming.

Im enthused that somany have taken ad-

vantage of this opportunity. Not only does it

mean that little things are being done around

the house for them, but it alsomeans a break

from the loneliness that many experience

especially those living on their own.

    The home-based caregivers are sourced

from theCitys job seeker database and, after

    their recruitment, the caregivers undergo

    various training sessions.

They receive in-depth training on the prin-

ciples of home-based social care, etiquette

and proper conduct in caring for an older

    person in the home environment.

They are also trained on how to identify

older people in need through community

profiling and to provide basic relief for fami-

    ly members of older people.

    Accredited first-aid training, communica-

tion and companionship aspects are also ad-

    dressed with the trainees.

    The home-based caregivers have been

trained and appointed to offer services such

as respite relief for familymembers andcare-

    givers of seniors, companionship, reading,

assistance in preparation of meals, light

cleaning and laundry duties, and referral of

seniors requiring hands-on care or medical

care to the districts for further support.

The caregivers deserve special thanks for

this service. Home-based care is not an easy

task, especially as some seniors see outsiders

as a threat to their independence. In many

cases the caregivers are also the ones who

identify cases of abuse and assist with inter-

ventions to help stop this cycle, Little says.

Residents who need assistance of a home-

based caregiver can contact the social devel-

    opment departments offices:

    ie onontbeerlike werk van

    die Tygerberg-hospitaal-

    skool kan nie genoeg be-

    klemtoon word nie.

    Ontmoet Riaan*, n student by

    n vooraanstaande kollege.

Riaan se lewe was op n ver-

woestingspad nadat hy op sy pa

se lyk afgekomhet nadat hy self-

    dood gepleeg het.

In di beproewende tyd het hy

dwelms begin gebruik en in die

    psigiatriese eenheid van die Ty-

    gerberg-hospitaal beland.

    Die depressiewe jongmanwas

vir twee jaar uit die skool ten

    spyte van die suksesvolle psigia-

triese hulp wat hy ontvang het,

    was sy toekoms maar donker.

    Abetprogram

Nie alle stories is egter so positief soos

Riaan sn nie, s SusanPotgieter, die skool-

    hoof.

Dit is eintlik goed so,

    want hoeminder jyweet, hoeminderweer-

    baar is jy.

Dis baie hartseer.

    rolnoual oor 54 jaar strekendaarduisende

Ons sou so graag meer personeel wou

    aanstel, gaan sy voort.

    Kyk, ons bring siek kinders

    vandiehospitaal hierheen, par-

tykeer in rolstoele. Ons wil hul-

le wegvat uit die omgewing van

    siek mense.

taal te kom, moet by hul bed-

    dens onderrig word.

    In hierdie stadium het ons

    een juffrou wat dit permanent

doen, maar sy kan net so agt

kinders n dag sien. Dis nie

    naastenby genoeg nie.

Een van die skool se grootste

    geldinsamelings van die jaar

vind op Saterdag 28 Mei van

09:30 tot 12:00 in die Vredelust-

    aktiwiteitsentrum in Bellville

    plaas.

Michelle Luscombe, n ontvanger van n

skenkershart, sal praat by die byeenkoms

    skenk.

Dog attacks how to protect yourself, child

    Never approach unknown dogs

A dog may be a mans best friend but do

you know how to reduce your chances of be-

    ing bitten by one?

According to Samantha Walpole, the sec-

    retary of Animal Behavioural Consultants

of SouthAfrica, children are themost at risk

of being bitten by dogs and should be educat-

ed about how to act around and take care of

    their dogs.

Children are generally drawn to dogs.

Wagging tails are attractive to children. Un-

fortunately, the public is ill informed that if

a dogs tail iswagging, itmeans that it is hap-

py and is safe to approach. This is far from

the truth. Children are also taught that hug-

ging and kissing is an acceptable form of af-

fection. Itmightbe tohumans, but to canines

    this is perceived as confrontational.

    Fundamentally, humans and dogs speak

    a different language. When communication

is misunderstood, people get bitten, says

Walpole, who is also a dog behaviourist and

    trainer.

Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.

Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlying

medical condition. The dog could also be

pushed to a point where it has no choice or

could feel that its life is being threatened.

    Harsh and confrontational training meth-

ods could also be a contributing factor with

regards to human related dog aggression.

Walpole says that people should purchase

dogs from reputable breeders to minimise

    the risk of being bitten.

If you want to purchase a puppy, do your

homework to match the right breed with

your lifestyle. Join a reputable positive rein-

    forcement socialisation school. There

should be continued training to build a good

bond between you and your dog. You should

seek assistance immediately if there are any

early signs that make you uncomfortable,

    said Walpole.

She provides the following tips and urges

    parents to educate their children.

Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learnhow to speakdog. There are anumber

of body signals that adogdisplays to indicate

that it is uncomfortable and needs space or

that it likeswhat you are doing. Bywatching

your dogs body language and understand-

ing what your dog is saying, you are able to

stop or change the reason for your dog feel-

    ing uncomfortable.

Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should not be

treated like a toy or tested to see how toler-

ant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dog

or pull its tail. Stop what you are doing if

a dog shows discomfort. Signs of discomfort

include when the dog turns its head away

from you, when the dog yawns, flicks his

tongue out of his mouth or licks his nose,

when the dogs body freezes, when it moves

away, lifts its lips or growls. Also stop what

you are doingwhen the dog showswhale-eye

(pronounced whites of the eye). This is often

misunderstood as a guilty look when it is

actually an appeasement gesture in re-

    sponse to the stimulus.

Never corner a dog and do not reprimand

a dog when it growls. This is a language pri-

or to a bite. Growling means that a person

should leave the dog alone. If your dog bites

someone, do not place the dog in a similar

    situation. If necessary, temporarily confine

the dog in a safe area with water and shelter

and immediately seek the assistance of a

    qualified trained and professional animal

    behaviourist.

Walpole says an unfamiliar dog should be

    ignored.

Do not encourage an unfamiliar dog to

approach you. Quietly and calmly walk

away. Do not turn your back on the dog but

rather try tohave your body facing sideways

    toward the dog, says Walpole.

If the dog approaches to attack you, do not

scream, run away or turn your back on the

dog. Do not make eye contact as this is often

    perceived as confrontational.

Keep your hands close to your body and

stand still until the dog has backed away or

is preferably out of sight. If you have food

on you, break it up into small pieces and un-

derarm toss the food toward the dogs head.

If thedogeats, continue to toss the foodwhile

slowly backing away to a safe place, says

    Walpole.

You can also place something such as a

chair or backpack if available between you

    and the dog.

If you are unable to escape an attacking

dog, place yourself in a foetal position with

yourhead tucked towardyour chest and cov-

er your head with your hands.

ER24s Dr Kumeshan Moodley, who has

treated numerous people for dog bites, says

that anyone bitten, even if minor injuries,

    should visit a medical practitioner.

He says that one of the main reasons for

this is the possibility of developing infec-

tions or rabies. Rabies, a viral and almost

always fatal disease, is mainly transmitted

by the bite of an infected animal.

The virus exists in the saliva of a rabid an-

    imal such as a dog.

People who develop rabies could experi-

ence anything from headache, fever, vomit-

ing, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, anx-

    iety, profuse salivation, paralysis, restless-

ness, fear of water and seizures.

    DrMoodley says that apersonwill notnec-

    essarily develop symptoms immediately. It

is possible to only experience symptoms lat-

    er in life.

There is no effective treatment for people

or animals once they develop rabies symp-

toms. Hence it is important to seek medical

    attention immediately after being bitten.

Treatment of bites depends on the severi-

ty of the injury as well as whether the dog

was a stray, a pet that was immunised or not

immunised. Where it is unknown if the dog

was immunised, as a precaution, the patient

would be treated based on assumption that

the dog was not immunised, said Dr Mood-

    ley.

    Volgens lt. Wayne Theunis, polisie-

loop. Skelms is deesdae so tegnologies ge-

vorderd dat hulle dit maklik regkry om

vervalsings te doen. Ons wil n beroep

doen op handelaars omdeeglik deur doku-

    mentasie te gaan, s Theunis.

Dit is volgens Theunis die eerste keer

dat hulle hierdie modus operandi tekom.

In die verlede het skelms motors vir

    toetsbestuur bespreek. Wanneer hulle n

entjie gery het, oorrompel hulle die ver-

koopsman en ry met die motor weg.

Di keer is twee mans in Nyanga aange-

So as dit weg is, is

    dit weg, s hy.

    oewel vertragings korter gaan

    raak, moet Kaapse treinpende-

laars hulle maar vir nog minstens

ses maande regmaak vir oponthoude en

    frustrasie.

    VolgensRianaScott,Metrorail-woord-

    voerder, sal Metrorail-treindienste on-

    paar maande waarin treinwaens uitge-

brand en perronne beskadig is, het tot

    daaglikse vertragings en die kansellasie

    van treine gelei.

    Oorvol waens

    tussenPhilippi enNyanga, enEsplanade

en Woodstock, asook skade aan perron-

ne 11 en 12 by die Kaapstad-stasie is

    reeds aan die gang.

Volgens Metrorail is die grootste oor-

    sake van vertragings:

    . Vandalisme:Kabeldiefstal byMan-

dalay en tussen Kaapstad en Esplanade

het gelei tot ernstige ontwrigting dwars-

    oor die spoornetwerk.

    Kommunikasiekabels

    leer.

    . Verouderde infrastruktuur: Die

    spoorinfrastruktuur het aan die einde

van sy lewensduur gekom en weens n

toename in tegniese foute is meer in-

    standhoudingswerk nodig. Herstelwerk

aan foutiewe stroombane op die lyne tus-

sen Bonteheuwel en Netreg en tussen

    Mandalay en Stockroad duur voort.

    Three days of

    paternity

    leave a joke!

Ive had bags under my eyes for so long

    that I named them.

Its no coincidence that theyre named

after my two toddlers Joshua and

    Amlie.

Im writing this from the perspective of

a very involved and very tired father

who gets just as little sleep as his wife.

    This weekend I went to a well-known

shopping centre in the northern suburbs

with my kids and were met by a very

    adamant and somewhat sarcastic security

    guard.

While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towards

me and indicated that I was not allowed

to park there. He furiously pointed

towards the sign reading Moms & Tots.

The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bags

under my eyes hanging so low that I

    needed a bra.

I refused to move the car and flatly

    ignored the man.

    Yet, he had a point!

    Im not a mom. So

    why on earth are

    there no Dads &

    Tots parking

    spaces?

    Little did I know

    my day was about

    to go from bad to

    worse.

    Screaming child

    number two had a

    dirty nappy and

    much to my

    dismay I discov-

    ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-

    ens rest rooms.

These two issues are more than just a

    personal gripe.

It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!

As if us poor souls dont have enough

    on our plates already.

Its quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired fathers

    nerves to the extreme.

Someone with more energy needs to do

    something about it.

And dont get me started on the differ-

    ence between maternity and paternity

    leave in South Africa!

A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needs

to breastfeed every three hours, so they

obviously need to spend a long time at

    home after giving birth.

A fathers role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he must

get up to go to work in the morning.

Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

    Hear my bone-wearied chuckle. Andr

Ek het onlangs n vertoning in

    die Bellville-stadskouburg

    bygewoon. Die gebou lyk op

die oog af netjies en die

    instandhouding van die gebou

    is goed.

    Die skouburg is in 1957

    ingewy. Ek is egter teleurge-

    steld in sekere aspekte, soos

    die eertydse spuitfontein wat

in onbruik geraak het en nou

    n wit olifant is.

    Die toringhorlosie is buite

werking en het op 15:45 gestop.

    Die tuingedeelte om die

    spuitfontein bestaan uit ses

    blombeddings, waarvan slegs

    een met roosbome beplant is

    terwyl klippe welig in die

ander l. By die ingang na die

    skouburg is vier groot pot-

    planthouers. In twee van hulle

    groei n boompie, maar die

ander twee is sonder plante en

    staan doelloos daar. Sommige

    letters van die Engelse bewoor-

    ding van stadskouburg is weg.

    Voordat ek my sitplek

ingeneem het, het ek in die

    voorportaal vertoef.

    Die kunsmatige plante en

    blomme is oud, stowwerig en

afgeleef en ontsier meer as wat

dit versier. Ek wou regtig nie

    vuil kolle. Dit kan maklik

    skoongemaak word of die

    vierkantige mattels kan

vervang word. Ek kan nie trots

to purchase some sweets and a

    cooldrink at the conveniece

    shop located at the premises.

I parked in one of the parking

    bays opposite the pump sta-

tions, when I noticed out of the

corner of my eye that a man

    stood with clenched fists

slightly to the far right of my

    car.

At first I did not process that

    this was actually happening

but when I looked again he

started to come closer to my

    vehicle with his clenched fists

    and threatening behaviour.

    Immediately I felt threatened

and started to move my car out

    of the bay whilst frantically

hooting to get the attention of

    the petrol attendants who just

    looked on.

By this time I was thinking of

my son who might be stepping

out soon from the shop to get

back into the car. This man

might hurt him as it looked

that he was ready to pounce my

car or us. As I hooted, and

moved off, the guy chased me

    with clenched fists whilst my

    daughter, who is eight years

    old, was screaming frantically

and crying in the car that he

    was coming and calling her

    brothers name. I tried to

    remain calm and exited the

premises to throw him off (my

son was not out of the shop yet)

but he was still in pursuit of

    us.

At the robot, I made another

U-turn to get back on the

premises to get my son, praying

that he might still be in the

    shop.

I drove straight in front of

the shop and screamed for my

son, who had exited the shop by

    now and thankfully stood on

the side. At this time the man

    was pinned down by the

    management and when my

    husband called later, he was

    informed matter-of-factly that

    the man was a troublemaker

and was taken away by the

    police.

As you can well imagine, my

    daughter and I were completely

    traumatised by the incident and

I had to take her to the doctor.

he may look like your average teenag-

er, but Stellenberg songbird Julanie J

    is anything but.

In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyed

chart success with her debut album. When

Spirit Breakout was released last year, it

went to number three on the South African

    iTunes chart and placed at

    number 34 on their interna-

tional chart in just 24 hours.

Now, just a few months lat-

    er, Julanie is already cooking

    up something new. Until re-

    cently, shes been performing

    what she describes as Chris-

    tian contemporary music,

    but this year shesmade thede-

    cision tomove into the secular

market. I feel its a bigger

platform, and this is what I

    love, she explains, referring

to the new RnB and pop

    songs shes been working on.

    Julanie has been writing

songs since shewas a child and

besides the 12 original tracks on Spirit

    Breakoutand thenewsongs sheswriting for

her upcoming Fearless Heart, to be released

in 2017, shes also been penning hits for local

    and international artists.

One of these is Congolese star Lokua Kan-

za and more recently shes been working

with Helmut Meijer on his new project, Cal-

ev. Her writing collaborations have mostly

been a result of the response to her debut al-

bum. They liked the music and the sound

of the album. Others came after her per-

    formances on local television shows.

While Julanie calls Spirit Breakout a typ-

ical worship album with a bit of pop, shes

planning something a little more edgy when

she goes back into studio this time round.

    Itwill haveakindof Jessie J andBeyonc

listed the help of The Arrows Pamela De

    Menezes for Fearless Heart.

Julanie will perform her first ever secular

show at Barnyard Willowbridge on Monday

16 May in preparation for her

    performances at the Graham-

    stown National Arts festival.

Im kind of excited for that; I

think its going to be a fun

    show.

    Julanie will be performing a

    combination of jazz, pop, RnB

    andwhat she calls fun, listen-

able music with the help of

    sound engineer Duane Brown

who is also the man behind El-

    vis Blues live sound, Winston

Siljeur on keys and JP Crouch

    on drums, among others.

    When she returns from Gra-
