2012-13 State of the School Report
In ReviewAs I stepped into my first full year as Headmaster, I had three main goals that I hoped to accomplish. These goals included research, relationships and assessment. Let me define them as follows:
Research: Identify the founding purposes and vision of Metro to ensure that we are operating in alignment with the purposes of the Lord as defined at Metro’s inception. While we may (and will) change our methods, we must not stray from our purpose.
Relationship: Establish a rapport and relationship with students, staff, parents and the Board in order to establish a mutual trust and understanding.
Assessment: Identify where we are in relation to the purposes and vision of the school and assess the various value components that we are providing to our students and families.
During my first year, I was able to confirm and affirm the vision, accomplishments and potential of our school. Metro Christian Academy is uniquely positioned as an independent, Christian, college preparatory institution comprised of a dedicated group of teachers, administrators, students and families who have joined together for the purpose of preparing students to successfully fulfill the unique call upon each of their lives. 2 Timothy 3: 17 states that through scripture, “the man (and woman) of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Metro accomplishes this “equipping” by:
• Keeping Jesus Christ at the center of all that we do
• Providing a vibrant and rigorous academic learning community where our students grow in wisdom, knowledge and critical thinking skills
• Providing students with training and venues to express their creativity in drama, music and the visual arts
• Delivering successful athletic programs that establish strong fundamentals in each sport, while teaching the values of discipline, hard work, encouragement, spiritual discipleship, sportsmanship and leadership
• Instilling an understanding of our obligation to love our neighbor and be a “light in the darkness” through our numerous outreach, missions and community service programs
• Honoring and embracing the unique gifts, talents, abilities and interests within our student body and allowing each to find their place and their call in the Body of Christ
• Building a diverse and vibrant Christian community for parents, staff, students and alumni who are all growing and learning together while enjoying a sense of belonging
Metro has the tremendous capacity to be a regionally recognized, Christian, college preparatory institution known for our culture, academic success, innovative approaches to learning, and successful programs in the arts and athletics. I trust that as you read through the following pages of this Annual Report, you will experience the beauty, joy, ministry, accomplishments and excellence of our educational community.
With blessing,
Roger Gerstenberger Headmaster

The SpiritualMetro must never lose sight that we are a Christian preparatory institution and that the spiritual development and training of our students is equally or more important than any other preparation that we provide. This year, we have taken steps to strengthen our discipleship and spiritual development opportunities. The vision of a healthy spiritual life in our academic community is threefold:
Informational: teaching students biblical truth, and equipping students and families with training that helps and encourages their spiritual lives.
Experiential: giving students challenges to live out the truth they have gained and offering students and families opportunities to practice tangible faith living in their daily lives.
Relational: Strengthening student, staff and family core relationships with each other (inward) and building transformative relationships with our world (outward).
2012-13 State of the School Report
Spiritual Highlights:• Elementary Seder Meals were part of chapel during Passion Week. Each class customized their
Seder experience and made it their own with the help of parents in each grade.
• Elementary Beatitudes Theme was used during chapel last year. Students were encouraged to memorize the Beatitudes. We utilized a fun and memorable video series to help them understand what the Beatitudes mean for their lives.
• Launch of Middle School Advisory Program in 2012 has continued into the current school year. Like high school advisory, it’s a 20-25 minute gathering to check in and build community between students and with staff. We provide options for advisors on what to do during their advisory time.
• High School Night of Prayer was attended by more than 100 students on Maundy Thursday. For almost eight hours straight, students were worshipping together, praying for each other, and engaged in meaningful life and spiritual conversations.
• Completion of the Prayer Room provides students and staff a space set apart for prayer and reflection during the school day.
• Growth in our mentoring program has occured with approximately 40 high school students leading object lessons and discussions in middle school advisories once each month, for six months of the year. Our 9th grade students organized and led a six-week evening small group for 6th graders in the fall. Some 6th grade students organized their own monthly worship and Bible study night, complete with 6th grade musicians leading the music! And, with some parent help and coordination, FUEL began as a monthly 4th grade small group study with high school men-tors helping with leadership and testimony sharing.
The OutreachFrom international missions to neighborhood acts of kindness, Metro students participated in various forms of service and outreach to bring the light and love of Christ to those around us and to instill a lifestyle of giving within our students.
Outreach Highlights:• Missions & Evangelism class visited Marshall Elementary once a week to mentor students
• Leadership students visited Marshall Elementary weekly during the Spring semester
• Key Club hosted a Christmas Activity Night at Marshall in December. Activities included playing Bingo (with great prizes), face painting (art students), and photos with Rudolph. The Missions class helped the students make Christmas cards for their families.
• NHS hosted a Math Night at Marshall during the spring semester
• Elementary students, through the Link-by-Link initiative, provided blankets and other supplies to the Laura Dester women’s shelter
• Marshall students (2-5th graders) were invited to Metro to view the dress rehearsal of Oklahoma. Metro provided the transportation for the students.
• NJHS (Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society) served monthly meals at the Ronald McDonald house
• Middle school students had several reading outreach days with McClure elementary including supplying them with 700 books in December for both the classroom and for the students’ homes.
• The 6th graders had a movie night that raised over $900 for the victims of the Moore Tornadoes
• MS and NJHS supplied 20 complete Thanksgiving dinners for needy McClure elementary families.
2012-13 State of the School Report
The FinancesThe activities of Metro are supported through three primary means including operating revenues (tuition & fees), fundraisers, and gifts to the endowment through the Metro Christian Academy Foundation. A summary of the 2012-13 financial health and accomplishments is as follows:
In 2012-13, for the first time in Metro’s 30 years of existence, the school did not have to borrow funds from its next year’s tuition revenues to supplement the cash flow of the current school year! Seven years ago, Metro had to borrow over $2.0M in future funds to finish the year.

Metro Christian Academy Donor RegistryRecognition of Gifts Received between August 2012 – July 2013
A vision and purpose was identified 30 years ago for Metro Christian Academy. Our founding families wanted to establish a school, outside of a particular church or denomination, that would provide strong academic preparation within a Christian environment. Today, we are recognized as one of the top private schools in Tulsa. Our “Pursuit of Excellence through Christ” continues as we prepare students not only to go into the world, but equip them to change it.
Gifts made to Metro Christian Academy and The Metro Christian Academy Foundation enable Metro to continue striving for excellence in every area of education. Thank you for supporting our efforts. Your investment in Metro Christian is an investment in the future.
