Never before in the history of Atlanta Public

Schools had any school been named in honor of

a living African American male until in September

1981, when the Atlanta Board of Education, at the

urging of the late Henrietta Canty, State Represen-

tative and PTSA President, and the late Superin-

tendent Dr. Alonzo A. Crim, the newly constructed

building at 3450 Benjamin E. Mays Drive SW, was

name. Some community leaders wanted the

school’s name to remain Southwest High School

since it was supposedly built to replace the old

Southwest High School, now Jean Childs Young

Middle School. After the dust settled, rising from

the sunset, atop a picturesque mountain, Benja-

min Elijah Mays High School was borne. Dr. Mays

could see the school from his home’s office. Much

to Dr. Mays’ delight, a permanent structure was

now in place that would forever honor his tireless

work.

Thomas E. Wood, Jr., served for one year as

principal, 1981-1982; Dr. Rubye D. McClendon suc-

ceeded Wood and served an eleven-year stretch,

from 1982 to 1993; and Ronald ‘Ron’ E. Brown

served for nine years, 1993 to 2002. Dr. Tyronne

Martin Smith took the helm in August 2002. The

school has been fortunate to have a continuous

line of renowned and effective leaders.

Built at a cost of $23 million, the school’s mag-

net program of Science and Mathematics was de-

signed to draw students from throughout the City

of Atlanta who were interested in college prepara-

tory work specifically in Science and Mathematics.

Mays High School, built on Atlanta’s southwest

side, to rival Northside High School’s academic

programs. A grant of $3,006,836.00 was received

from the Georgia General Assembly to assist the

Atlanta Board of Education in construction cost.

Representative Canty was instrumental in secur-

ing the grant.

Present at the groundbreaking ceremony were

Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, President of the Atlanta

Board of Education, Mrs. June Cofer, Vice President

of the Atlanta Board of Education, and the follow-

ing School Board members: Mrs. Margaret Griggs,

Reverend Preston Williams, Mrs. Angela Loan-

nides, Mrs. Ann Woodward, Mr. Richard Raymer,

Dr. Asa Yancey and Mrs. Carolyn Crowder. Many of

the same 10 persons attended the school’s dedi-

cation ceremony.

The school sits on 70.35 acres of prime real

named in honor of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, a hu-

manitarian, educator, and international pioneer in

‘Negro Education.’ Groundbreaking for the school’s

construction took place on Monday, November 14,

1977 at 1:00 P.M. The building was completed in

August 1981 and was officially opened in a Sun-

day ceremony on September 27, 198l. Initially,

there was much debate about the new school’s

estate, and has 310,369 square feet of working

space. The school sits approximately 9/10 of a

mile from the street (Benjamin E. Mays Drive) just

across Interstate 285. There is not an access or

exit to Interstate 285 on Benjamin E. Mays Drive.

The mountainous landform has an abundance of

wild life. Confirmed spotted wildlife includes deer,

turkeys, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, wood

ducks, rare geese, snakes, geckos, alligators, rab-

bits, wild boars, owls, bald eagles, falcons, sala-

manders, domestic and exotic fishes, armadillos,

coyotes, and gray and red foxes. This area is one

of the few remaining green areas and wetlands left

in the City of Atlanta. It is rapidly dwindling due to

nonstop commercial and housing development.

The architects and contractors responsible for

constructing the school included FIRMS, Finch,

Alexander, Barnes, Rothschild and Paschal, and

Edward C. Miller and Associates. The engineering

was Polytech, Inc. from Houston, Texas. Herman

J. Russell (HJ Russell Construction Company)

played a vital role in the school’s construction.

The land was purchased from Joel Montgomery

on February 12, 1969 for an undisclosed price.

Thirty years later and with an academic foun-

dation as solid as the rock of Gibraltar, Benjamin

E. Mays High School is a beckon of light atop a

mountain in Southwest Atlanta. Envied by those

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Tyronne MarTin SmItH, J.D. PH.D

is an accomplished Administrator and Educator who has served in the role of Principal within the At-lanta Public School System for 22 of his 29 years with the district. Dr. Smith has been, for 10 years residing over The Benjamin E. Mays High School. He is an effective communicator with excellent plan-ning, organizational, and negotiation strengths, as well as the ability to lead, reach consensus, estab-lish goals, and attain results. Dr. Smith has an outstanding track record in assuring overall student success, as they integrate academic and extracurricular activities.

Dr. Smith’s mandate is to continue to build upon existing programs through proven data driven com-petencies in project and program management, administration, staff development and empowerment. Beginning as an energetic and inspiring science teacher and advancing to science coordinator and visionary school leader, he has been successful at every level within the district. He holds a variety of degrees, to numerous to mention.

Dr. Smith has served on multiple panels for The Atlanta Public Schools, as well as Advisor and the Peer Leadership Committee at various schools. He is affiliated with the National Education Association and Georgia Bar Association to name a few. He is married and has one daughter.

DarreLL r. HAYES

Coach Darrell R. Hayes has proudly served as Athletic Director in the Atlanta Public School System for over fifteen years at Harper-Archer High, Washington High, and presently Mays High School. He currently holds the position of Vice-President for Region 6-AAAA. Additionally, he has held the office of President for Region 5-AAAA and was recognized by the Georgia Athletic Association as Athletic Director of Year. He is a native of Southwest Atlanta, graduating from Joseph Emerson Brown High School. Hayes graduated salu-tatorian of his class and received a full four year academic schol-arship and a sports information scholarship to Troy University in Troy, Alabama. He graduated Troy University with honors earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art. Hayes received a Master of Arts in Education, with an Administration and Supervision concen-tration from the University of Phoenix.

During his tenure at Troy, Coach Hayes received history mak-ing notoriety as an African American. He was the university’s first African American Assistant Sports Information Director, and Male Greek of the Year. While working in the athletic department, he served as an assistant to Coach Charlie Oliver, Head Track and Field Coach. It was also at Troy University that Coach Hayes became a proud brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated; he later became Xi Beta Chapter President and the fraternity’s 84th Na-tional College Brother of the Year.

Coach Hayes returned to Atlanta and accepted his true call-

ing as an educator at Charles L. Harper High School. While at Harper, he established and implemented a Graphic Art Program second to none in the district. His ability to motivate his stu-dents to achieve enabled him to produce the district’s first state and national winners of SkillUSA. This record still stands today. Hayes was also selected as the state’s First SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year. Additionally, in his twenty plus years of dedicated ser-vice, Coach Hayes added to his list of professional achievements APS Academic Incentive Award Winner in Vocational Education, Teacher of the Year, and Star Teacher just to name a few. He has touched the young lives of hundreds during his tenure at Harper High School, Harper-Archer High School, Washington High School, and currently Mays High School, with over twenty-seven years in the profession.

Coach Hayes is an award winning cross-country coach, track coach, as well as, Athletic Director. During his tenure as a Head Cross Country and Track Coach, his teams have won Atlanta City Championships, Region Championships, and have qualified for State Championships.

He is spiritually feed under the teachings of Bishop Dr. Dale C. Bronner at the Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral where he serves as one of the anointed choir directors.

He is the proud father of a twenty-six year old son who is cur-rently serving in the military and grand-father of one.

BAND

Shatema paige darrion cartenandreW yenn-Batah

William J. Earvin -, Director of Bands

is in his ninth year as a music educator.

Mr. Earvin is a graduate of The Benjamin E.

Mays High School where he was a student in

the Math and Science Academy and the Mays

Band Program. Earvin matriculated through

the musical ranks at Clark Atlanta University

where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music.

He studied trumpet with Prof. John Head and

conducting from Prof. James Patterson and Dr.

Alfred Duckett. While at CAU, Mr. Earvin per-

formed in the Mighty Marching Panther Band,

the Symphonic Band and the world renowned

CAU Jazz Orchestra. While traveling overseas

with the CAUJO he also held positions as Stu-

dent Director and Graduate Assistant in the

Band Program and Assistant Conductor of the

Atlanta University Center-wide Orchestra.

After Graduating from Clark Atlanta in

2000, he began working at Booker T. Wash-

ington High School in Atlanta as the Interim

Band Director. In 2001, Earvin became the

Director of Bands at Avondale High School in

the Dekalb County School System. After build-

ing the Avondale program, he pursued his

graduate studies at Mississippi Valley State

University where he earned his Master of Arts

Degree in Education. While at Mississippi Val-

ley he served as a graduate assistant in the

Fine Arts Department where he would later

become an Assistant Director of Bands. Mr.

Earvin also secured the position as the first Af-

rican American Director of Bands at Mississip-

pi Delta Community College. At MDCC, Earvin

directed an award winning Jazz Band and the

College Concert and Marching Bands.

In May of 2007, his mentor Sumner A. Smith

retired from Mays High School and Earvin was

chosen to be his successor. Mr. Earvin has

had many successes in his first year at his

Alma Mater. The Marching Band has received

national recognition, and the legacy contin-

ues with students performing in District Hon-

or Band and the APS Youth Orchestra. The

Mays Concert Band received its sixth rating of

“Excellent” at Performance Evaluation. Also,

the Mays Wind Symphony (formerly the Sym-

phonic Band) earned its twenty eighth (28th)

consecutive “Superior” rating at the Perfor-

mance Evaluation.

While acquiring the reputation as an en-

ergetic conductor and a determined program

builder, Mr. Earvin still finds time to maintain

memberships in numerous civic and profes-

sional organizations; the Georgia Music Ed-

ucators Association, MENC, the Mississippi

Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi

Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sin-

fonia Music Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Frater-

nity Inc., The International Trumpet Guild, The

Conductors Guild, CBDNA and the HBCU-NB-

DC. Mr. Earvin resides in Atlanta with his wife

Tamesha and their three children W. Jarrett

Jr., Alexandra White, and Crista Simone.
