A. Dr. Jack PlushDr. Jack the helping dog – 6” tall plush toy with service dog vest & Mayo Clinic collar tag.
Dr. Jack is a fictional counterpart to Mayo’s real, facilities-based service dog (who has since passed away). In the book, he tours Mayo Clinic with a young visitor in tow. The book caught the attention of Ty Warner, founder of Ty Inc., a leading manufacturer of plush toys. He bought a copy and then offered to develop a custom-designed Dr. Jack Beanie Baby for Mayo Clinic, with all proceeds going to support Mayo’s not-for profit mission in patient care, research and education – just like the book.

B. Dr. Jack (book) – Let’s visit Mayo Clinic with Dr. Jack the helping dogIn the Dr. Jack book, Mayo’s canine ambassador meets a young boy who’s visiting his grandfather in the hospital. Jack takes him on a tour of Mayo Clinic, introducing him to a bit of Mayo history and taking him aboard Mayo One for a quick jaunt across the country to see all three Mayo Clinic campuses and Mayo Health System. Dr. Jack even stops for a brief duet at the piano in the Gonda Building.
The book, originally introduced in 2010, is illustrated by Robert Morreale, head of Mayo’s Medical Illustration and Animation group in Rochester. It features a foreword by Barbara Bush, an emeritus Mayo trustee; an essay on “The Healing Dimension of Pets” by Mayo’s Edward Creagan, M.D.; a brief biography of the real Jack by Jenee Marchant; and an introduction by Mayo President and CEO John Noseworthy, M.D.
It has received an Award of Excellence from the American Association of Medical Colleges.
