Loving Growing

MAY 2014

On April 20th of this year we celebrated Easter.

Easter is the day set aside in the Christian year to

remember Christ’s resurrection – His coming back

to life after death. It is truly a remarkable story. It

is really the greatest miracle in all of history. But it

is a pivotal story. Many don’t believe it is true.

People didn’t want to believe it then, and people

don’t want to believe it now.

But I am convinced.

The Gospel records bear this out. Many people saw

Jesus and witnessed to the fact that he was alive.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all record multiple

stories of people who encountered Jesus in the flesh

on the Sunday when he rose or on one of the 40

days that followed. (Luke says in the Gospel and in

Acts that Jesus ascended to heaven after 40 days.)

It sounds so surprising, but Jesus predicted that he

would do this. Now his followers didn’t understand

what was going to happen in the times that he talked

about it, but he mentioned it on several occasions.

One of the proofs of the resurrection has to be

the disciples’ reaction. As I mentioned above, they

didn’t get it when Jesus talked about it before his

death, but afterwards the disciples were unrelenting

in their witness. They were willing to suffer far

more than embarrassment and humiliation to tell the

story of Jesus’ resurrection. Because they had seen

him. And they wanted everyone to know that Jesus

was indeed raised from the dead, and that he indeed

was the Son of God.

The spread of the Church has to be another proof of

the resurrection. From the time that Peter’s first

sermon on Pentecost stirred up 3,000 souls until

now, the Good News of Jesus Christ has been

preached around the world and has been the spark

that has created thousands upon thousands of

churches and millions upon millions of believers.

And that’s really the biggest proof of all today, the

fact that Jesus lives today in this world and in the

hearts of his disciples around the world. We are

part of the resurrection story because we are a part

of the body of Christ alive today.

The resurrection sets Christianity apart. No other

world religion makes the claim that their leader

has conquered sin and death. Only Jesus leads to

eternal life.

There are many who claim it was all a hoax. Many

who deny the miracle and say it just isn’t physically

possible. But if it is true then we all have hope for

tomorrow. If it’s true, then that fact changes every-

thing. I believe it happened. I believe Jesus is the

Son of God. And I believe he lives.

Because he lives, I can face tomorrow.

Because he lives, all fear is gone.

Because I know he holds the future

And life is worth the living just because he lives.

Peace of Christ,

Pastor Doug

A BIG “HALLELUJAH” FOR OUR

HOLY WEEK MUSICIANS!

Hallelujah is a word beyond words – a word

to praise God! A good expression for the faithful and excellent service of our musicians at Aldersgate.

Throughout Holy Week, we enjoyed children singing and waving palms; our wonderful Chancel choir, and

their participation in a combined choir with Mt. Sylvan choir for Tenebrae; our Praise Band, who also joined

forces with Mt. Sylvan musicians and singers for Maundy Thursday; our own Brass sextet heralding the Easter

message; our Joyful Noise Ringers; and our brilliant organist, Mila Karamushka; as well as a guest clarinetist

(Mei Thai) and cellist (Carlos Bardales)! And, you wouldn’t have heard much of it if it weren’t for our A-V/

Sound team, headed by John Hall. Extra rehearsals, prayer, and worship offered freely and lovingly showed

why we are so blessed to acknowledge our musicians as Ministers here at Aldersgate. Just as I know that each

musician experienced great joy in sharing their talents , I know you all join me in giving thanks for their gifts

to God and this congregation!

Forgive me for naming some but omitting names of others (they are all truly AMAZING), here’s a special

shout out to some of our “above and beyond” musicians: Nancy Hargis and April Twine (singers in Praise

Band and Choir, as well as bell ringers); Steve Wilfong (trombone, bass guitar); Ken Morris (singing and

drumming); Brass Sextet members: Trumpet: Hank Van Deventer, Ronnie Oakley; Horn: Mary Lynn Van

Deventer, Kenneth Carle; Trombone: Steve Wilfong; Tuba: Lowry Caudill; and finally, Bob de Andrade

(guitar and gracious honey-do player).

Our Thanks to You Aldersgate,

With warmest thanks, grateful hearts, and deep apprecia-

tion for your thoughtfulness. We wanted to thank you

for all of your kindness and support.

WORSHIP WONDERINGS - a series on worship practices by Nan de Andrade

Why do we do what we do in corporate worship? Each act in our service has a purpose and a tradition that

carries deep meaning and intention. Many are centuries-old and some have even evolved into new meanings.

This series will take a moment to look into some of our practices at Aldersgate so that we can all enjoy a richer

experience of worship of God on Sunday mornings.

This month: CHOIR CALLS AND ANTHEMS

The most important act of the choir is to serve as worship leaders, especially through the sung portions of our

worship. Hopefully, their strong, heartfelt singing/leading emboldens everyone to sing easily and to focus

their hearts on the meanings in the hymn texts or liturgy.

The choir also presents three special pieces each week that connect the theme of the day, scripture, or season,

to acts of praise or prayer. At the beginning of the service, we hear the “Choral Introit” (root word: Latin, in-

troire - entrance; go in) Though we don’t climb a hill to worship in the Temple anymore, in a way, the Introit

invites, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” This short piece, often a verse of a hymn or a chorus, is chosen

to focus us all on the worship of God, with a “first word” that highlights the theme or summons us to praise.

The “Call to Prayer,” another short statement, ushers us further in to the throne room, that we might offer our

prayers and petitions to God. It’s sometimes hard to step out of our earthly cares into sacred space. These two

choral “Calls” are encouragement to enter holy ground.

The Choir’s anthem, usually shared during the Offertory, lead us in one of three directions. First, it directs us

UP - an act of praise and worship, lifting God’s name up and giving God glory. (“God, You are…”) Second,

it can lead us DOWN – a musical “kneeling in prayer,” in which the anthem asks for God’s help, comfort or

consecration. (“O God, hear our prayer…”) Third, it can speak OUT – and into our lives, with a proclamation

of God’s word. (“Listen, my people…”) Anthems can be wonderful in that they add to the beauty and mean-

ing of scripture texts through a new dimension, music. It is also one of the ways that we, through the Holy

Spirit, experience “living Word,” as original texts are shared that are not literal scripture settings, but rather,

are inspired words of Christians through the ages, and even today. Did you know that at one time, the ONLY

text allowed in worship was strictly scripture? Our founders, John and Charles Wesley, were among the inno-

vators who fought to open the windows to the Holy Spirit’s Word for today, by writing and encouraging the

use of new, contemporary texts.

This month, as you listen to the choir’s songs, let them help lead you into God’s presence. See if their “Calls”

can help you focus more intently on worship and prayer. During the anthem, “join the choir” by attending to

the words and the beauty and meaning brought through the musical setting, and let your souls go UP in praise,

DOWN in prayer, or OUT, as you hear and respond to God’s Word.
