10 p.m. Selihot Service (Service of Forgiveness)Selihot is a unique and moving late night “Service of Forgiveness” that starts the High Holy Day season. It is a spiritual and evocative evening that challenges us to reflect upon our past deeds and experiences, and encourages us to consider personal and religious goals for future growth and change.

Before our Selihot Service begins, the Torah Scrolls in the ark are publicly changed into their white High Holy Day covers which symbolize the freshness and purity of the coming New Year.

During the service, a string quartet will accompany Hazzan Perlman and the Chizuk Amuno Choir in celebration of the rich and mysterious music that helps us welcome the High Holy Days. The evening concludes with the familiar sounding of the Shofar.

conclusion of Shabbat and enjoy a dessert reception.

8:30 p.m. “Dreaming of a White Christmas”Selihot movie and discussion with Rabbi Joshua Gruenberg. Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream - a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it. Directed by Oscar-nominated director, Larry Weinstein (“Inside Hana’s Suitcase,” “Leslie Caron: The Reluctant Star,” “Making Overtures”), “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” is an amazing look at the 20th century North American immigrant experience and the extraordinary outburst of musical energy from the children of those immigrants. This new generation rejected their parents’ European past and instead embraced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and, finally, Hollywood. The outsiders began writing the soundtrack to the insiders’ American dreams and in doing so, wrote themselves into history.

Rosh HaShanah, Second Day ~ Aliyot On the Second Day of Rosh HaShanah when our prayer service embraces all of us as one synagogue community, we honor members of our congregation for their life experiences in the past year with an aliyah to the Torah.

• We recognize friends in our synagogue community who have experienced healing in the year gone by.

• We recognize friends in our congregation who have been blessed with the birth of children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren in the past year.

• We recognize our synagogue members who recently became Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

• We recognize those in our synagogue family who were married or who celebrated their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s weddings last year.

• We recognize our elders who are 90 years of age and older.

Tashlikh Tashlikh, is the Hebrew word for “casting off / throwing off.” People often gather together at a body of flowing water—often a nearby river—and they bring bread crumbs with them in bags. We imagine that the crumbs represent all of our misdeeds over the course of the past year. Then, we’re invited to toss the crumbs into the water, symbolically “casting our sins upon the waters.”

Family Tashlikh Service • 5:00 p.m. A special Tashlikh service for our families led by Rabbi Gruenberg prior to walking to our stream.

Community Tashlikh • 5:30 p.m. Our entire community will gather in the Garden Lounge for friendship and refreshments before walking down to the stream on Phillips Drive to symbolically cast away our sins. Following Tashlikh everyone is invited to remain for Minhah, the Afternoon Service.

Yom Kippur Food DriveSeptember 24 - October 8 In the Haftarah for Yom Kippur, the prophet Isaiah implores Jews to fast not just by refraining from food, but by taking meaningful social action.

As you reflect on the past year and on the one that is nearing, consider putting Isaiah’s message of social responsibility into action by making a contribution of non-perishable food items to the bins in the lobbies.
