September 2012 | Elul 5772 - Tishrei 5773

It’s September (or Tishrei). Time to check in with each other. Here at Chizuk Amuno, we’re a large and diverse group. We don’t all know each other, but we

are all connected. This is most apparent to us when we come together each fall on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

Throughout the year, as we encounter the ups and downs of our individual and family lives, we know we are part of something larger. We choose to be synagogue members because of the values, memories, and relationships that sustain us.

Whether “on campus” daily, weekly, monthly, or annually, from our affiliation with Chizuk Amuno Congregation we gain inspiration, support, and a sense of home. Synagogue community personalizes for us what it means to be part of the larger Jewish community. Synagogue membership roots us in a local, focused expression of Jewish peoplehood, and provides us with the resources we need to live compelling and thoughtful Jewish lives.

In our culture of “Do It Yourself” living, the choice to find personal meaning in the midst of a synagogue community is even more powerful today than it used to be. As we gather this month for the High Holy Days, we celebrate this significance in our connection to each other.

Once again this year, the familiar and new people we’ll greet, the ideas and hopes we’ll consider, as well as the warmth and celebration we’ll enjoy will sustain us, inspire us, and continue to make a difference in our lives.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon, and to everything we’ll experience together in this New Year.

L’Shanah Tovah,

Unlock the powerful truths that shattered ancient beliefsand paved the way for the new and

revolutionary religion that became Judaism.

“We have never fully achieved the vision thatMoses bequeathed to us. It remains as vitaltoday as it ever was, a guide to life and a chal-lenge to humanity.” —from the Afterword

More than three thousand years have passedsince Moses’s teachings were first formulated. These basic values and concepts underlying theTorah radically transformed the important reli-gious insights of the patriarchs and yielded a newway of understanding God and the meaning ofhuman life. Though much has changed since thattime, human beings, human actions and humanneeds remain much the same.

This fascinating examination of Moses’steachings about God, humanity and societyrevisits some concepts that have never been fullyrealized, have gone unrecognized, or have beenobscured under layers of interpretation. By clari-fying his revolutionary thinking, it illustrateshow a society based on these ancient teachingswould revolutionize civilization and leadtoward a more perfect world for humankind.

“To distill the essential truths of the Torah requiresboth learning and vision. Reuven Hammer hasachieved this in superlative style.”

—Rabbi David J. Wolpe, Sinai Temple, Los Angeles; author, Why Faith Matters

“With erudition and masterful use of language… exposes the most compelling intellectualarguments for living a full and rich Jewish life.A ‘must read’ destined to become a new classic.”

—Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin, editor, The Modern Men’s Torah Commentary

This is a unique look at the Torah—the foundation of Jewish existence—and the revolutionary teachings ofMoses embedded within it that gavebirth to Judaism and influenced theworld.

Dr. Reuven Hammer presentsfourteen radical ideas found inTorah, explains their original inten-tions, and shows how understandingthese “truths” can help you betterunderstand the narrative and laws ofJudaism. He shows how when takentogether, these value concepts pres-ent a picture of human life that issurprisingly modern and relevant toour goals for repairing the worldtoday:

• Humanity is one as God is one

• Human beings are responsiblefor their actions and have thechoice to do good or evil

• Poverty, deprivation, slaveryand hatred are evils that mustbe eradicated

• The earth is not ours to destroy

• The love of others is a divinecommand

• And much more …

revolutionary religion that became Judaism.

Support the State of Israel5773 High Holy Day Bonds Campaign at Chizuk Amuno

P articipating in an Israel Bonds High Holy Days Campaign means you stand beside a nation that sends a field hospital to Haiti

(earthquake) and Japan (tsunami) immediately and helps to invent a missile defense system (Iron Dome) to protect Israeli citizens from terrorist rocket attacks. It means you support a country that is constantly unveiling innovations like a window that doubles as a solar energy collector, a bionic retina that dramatically corrects vision impairments, or a no-hands pressure bandage that saves lives and limbs on the battlefield.

During this year’s High Holy Day Campaign, please purchase an Israel Bond to show your support and love for Israel. Again this year, Sheila Sandbank will be chairing the Israel Bonds appeal at Chizuk Amuno.

Once again, Hopkins Federal Savings Bank and THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore are partnering to make a 100% match on all Israel Bonds purchased during the High Holy Days appeal throughout the entire Baltimore community. Thanks to this generous match, every investment you make for Israel’s future will be worth twice its value.

Club Hatikvah Opening EventWe invite you to join us for our opening event on Sunday, October 21 and 6 p.m. at Chizuk Amuno. We’ll schmooze with friends we haven’t seen over the summer, share in a delicious dinner, and enjoy entertainment by “Two for the Show” – featuring Paula

Rehr and Tom Kowalski who will regale us with their innovative style and energy.

RSVP by Thursday, October 11, to Noma Surosky, 410/653-0484. To discuss membership to Club Hatikvah, please call Lenny Fox, 410/484-6260.

Your Torah Fund Dollars at Work!Keeping costs within the reach of our students

Tuition for an individual student can range anywhere from $66,934 or more per year, and it costs

the Jewish Theological Seminary and Ziegler Institute much more than that to educate its students. Your Torah Fund gift helps offset the difference. Participation in the Torah Fund Campaign is our way of keeping a higher Jewish education within reach of our future rabbis, cantors, educators, scholars, and lay leaders. The exquisite training they receive impacts Chizuk Amuno as well as Jewish communities throughout the world.

Many companies make their matches online. Please check with your employer to see how it is

done. You may be able to step up to the next level of giving through a matching gift. In addition, donors of $180 or more will receive the 5773 Torah Fund pin, pictured to the left.

Continue the good work! You should have received information in the mail regarding

your Torah Fund contribution. Alternatively, you can contact Wendy Davis, Torah Fund Chair, [email protected], to make a pledge or donation today.
