Such a small thing – but you should see Chizuk Amuno members eagerly open up their brown paper bags to discover what Chef Annie packs for our “Lunch and Learn” sessions. “Ooh hamantaschen, I haven’t had a single one yet this year.” “Who wants to trade pretzels for potato chips?” The kosher bag lunch is just a side benefit of these middle of the day workplace gatherings in which we meet for an hour to study Jewish text together. For several years congregants have been gathering in different locations around Baltimore. For the past few years I have had the pleasure of studying with groups at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center. Lunch and Learn with Amy Meltzer Saturday, November 17, following services Explore the Parashat HaShavua, Tol’dot, with Amy Meltzer, educator and book author (and Judy’s daughter). In doing so we live the teachings of Maimonides: Among the greatest scholars of our people were woodcutters and water drawers; nevertheless, they were involved in Torah study day and night. (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Torah Study 1:9) Together we have studied a variety of topics including Megillat Esther, blessings for bad news, Kabbalah, and halakhah of redeeming the captive. Often our group will find a way to connect our studies to their own professional concerns, but that is not our ultimate intent. We study because we are Jews and obligated to do so, but ask any of our dozens of Lunch and Learners and they will tell you how nice it is to take a break in the middle of the workday, connect with old and new friends, have a nice lunch, and engage in this mitzvah. The pleasure of Torah lish’mah, Torah study simply for its own sake, comes in part from encountering ancient and modern texts and being a link in the chain of transmission. Our first two downtown Lunch and Learns of the year are at noon on Thursday, November 1 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Thursday, November 8 at the University of Maryland Medical Center. If you work or live near either, please join us. Paul’s Place Listening Circle Help a listening circle for women at Paul’s Place’s. The circle is facilitated by Barbara Grochal and will be held Tuesday, November 27 from 1-2 p.m. Participants share experiences, listen to one another and build community in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others Wednesday, December 5, Noon Lunch will be served Group facilitated by Lou Jacobs, LCSW-C This interactive conversation will cover some of the ups and downs faced by those charged with caring for loved ones. Understanding that care-giving takes on myriad forms, the group will explore issues common to participants’ experiences, and discuss, in a supportive environment, useful strategies that care-givers have found for self-care, including developing a network of support and other ways to ease the stresses likely to emerge during this challenging phase of life.

2012 Community Mitzvah Day Tuesday, December 25 Join with other Chizuk Amuno members to help in soup kitchens or homeless shelters, visit the elderly, assemble winter care packages, deliver meals, and so much more. Schedule of Shabbat ServicesEach Friday evening and Shabbat morning we enjoy celebration, prayer, and Torah study with Rabbi Ronald Shulman, Rabbi Deborah Wechsler, Hazzan Emanuel Perlman, and our synagogue community.

This schedule indicates the weeks when our Chizuk Amuno Choir participates in services, as well as study themes, or other service features including family and Shabbat Yahad activities. Join with us to express yourself in the presence of God, to nurture your soul, and to connect your life with the life of our synagogue family.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to involve yourself in Jewish

learning, then you should check out what the Stulman Center for Adult Learning is offering for the Fall 2012 semester. Courses are offered for all levels of adult Jewish learners, by the area’s finest educators, in a friendly and conducive atmosphere.

A few of the courses beginning in November are Writing Your Memoirs and Forbidden Wisdom: Kabbalah through the Ages. In addition to these courses, some other events we have scheduled for November include The World Without You on Sunday, November 4, a book discussion led by author Joshua Henkin; a presentation by Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of UMBC on Wednesday, November 14; and Understanding 2012 on Sunday, November 18 with Dr. Mark Whitman, Professor Emeritus, Towson University, who will analyze the election results.
