With a ton of TV and radio commercials staking their claims with Memorial Day sales, it’s easy for many Americans to lose under-standing of the true reason we observe Memorial Day. Although it’s fun to have BBQs over this three-day weekend and get excited about the unofficial start of summer, simply put: It’s a time to honor, remember and reflect!

Sam Badiner, your Lakeridge Shores Town Homes neigh-bor, adds: “Less than 1 percent of Americans volunteer for mili-tary service. Those who have volunteered wrote the government a check, payable for any amount up to and including their life. In my opinion, anyone who volunteers is a HERO!” Let us all honor all the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while making the United States the land of the free and the home of the brave (land of the free because OF the brave)!

Additionally, May is National Military Appreciation Month.

May 1: Silver Star Service Banner Day – honoring America’s wounded, injured and ill service members. Loyalty Day – recognizing the American spirit of loyalty.

May 8: V-E Day

First full week in May: Public Service Recognition Week

Second Saturday through third Sunday in May: Armed Forces Week

Second Friday in May: Military Spouse Day

Third Saturday in May: Armed Forces Day

May 22: Maritime Day

Last Monday in May: Memorial Day

colors that closed the rooms in, so I had the whole interior and ex-terior repainted for a fresher look. The house is dated so I will be working on it for a while. There were two small bedrooms on one side of the home, so I opened the walls to create one large suite. The adjacent bathroom was gutted and made accessible to the bedroom by changing doorways. Since the home sits on the lake, I’m incorporating a nautical feel by adding wood treatments such a crown molding and wider base, along with mantles on fireplaces to give it a finished look. I create the designs as that is my profession, in addition to being a real estate agent with Chase International. I know the importance of maintaining value by keeping updated. I have a great group of subs, but I do tackle some projects. I take before-and-after photos, and love watching the progression of change and character. The house has a relaxed feel and very informal. I love being in the kitchen and looking out at the water. The kitchen needs some work, and I’ll be addressing some changes this spring. The func-tionality is awkward, and there is no drama or focal point, nor a pantry. A functional kitchen is a must for resale. My resources are going to the design center in LA, SF and LV, however I do find Houzz and Pinterest an excellent source for ideas. I take on one room at a time, as it gets very messy. I mask off the areas with plastic, so that it gives me time to think out details and not be in a rush. Since I love the projects, I don’t get stressed as some do. As far as advice, paint is the biggest vice for change. If you are at a loss, call a designer to consult, listen to the options, and pick a couple that will increase the VALUE in your home. I’m always available to consult if you need assistance. Great kitchens and great master bedrooms are key rooms to upgrade. Unless you are handy, get professional licensed workers, otherwise you can have a costly disaster. Since I live in Lakeridge Shores, I have a sincere interest in work-ing with neighbors to help educate and increase the value of your home. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful location!

While inflation has not been a concern in recent decades, the 1970s and early 1980s are remembered as a time when inflation created major economic challenges. In some years during this timeframe, the cost of living (as measured by the Consumer Price Index or CPI) increased more than 10 percent per year. Watch the Federal ReserveOne way to keep an eye on inflation risk is to follow actions taken by the Federal Reserve (the Fed). It targets an annual inflation rate of two percent, a goal it has had little difficulty maintaining in recent years. If the Fed begins lifting the short-term interest rates it controls more quickly than expected, it may be a sign that Fed policymakers are con-cerned that the threat of higher inflation is upon us. If the Fed raises rates quickly, consumers could see rising interest rates and a more volatile stock market. Your financial advisor can provide you more guidance as you prepare for changes that may lie ahead. Prepare your portfolioInvestors also need to be cognizant of the potential impact infla-tion can have on their portfolios. In what has generally been a period of low inflation (the 1980s through now), stocks and bonds have both performed consistently well. In the 1970s, when infla-tion was much higher, stocks lagged their historical averages and bonds were negatively affected by rapidly rising interest rates. If you are concerned that inflation risks will become a greater concern, this may be a good time to review your portfolio. Con-sider taking steps to prepare for potential changes in the invest-ment environment that could be caused, in part, by changes in the inflation scenario.

Are You Ready?

IF INFLATION RETURNS,

Inflation is the normal state of affairs in the U.S. economy. Most economists consider an annual increase in the cost of living of two or three percent per year to be a manageable level of inflation. This increase usually is a good trend,

because it is an indication of a growing economy.

healthy livingProvided by the American Heart Association

Stay active in the summer months.

Here are some tips to keep your family physically active in the warmer months:

Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before, during

and after physical activity to avoid dehydration. For low-calorie flavor, add slices of your favorite fruits such as melon, orang-es, berries, or even cucumber or mint to a pitcher of water and refrigerate for two hours.

Protect your family from the sun. Wear wide-brimmed hats, always apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and reapply sunscreen every two hours.

Heat safety: Avoid intense activities between noon and 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest.

Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing; choose light, breathable fabrics such as cotton; and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Head indoors. When the heat gets unbearable, try indoor activities.

Heart-healthy cook ideas:

Here are some tips and ideas for a healthier grilling cookout:

Go fish! Fish, especially oily fish like tuna and salmon, have great nutritional

benefits including omega-3 fatty acids. Rub a fillet with lemon juice and parsley or rosemary for enhanced flavor.

Make a better burger. If you’re grilling burgers, be sure to buy lean or extra lean beef, drain off the excess fat after cooking, and avoid making huge pat-ties – remember that a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards (3 oz.). Add finely chopped green pepper to your beef to get in some veggies.

Veggie kabobs: Load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray, and grill until slightly blackened.

Summer snack ideas:

Try some fun and refreshing summer snacks that the entire family can enjoy:

Cool and crisp: Keep a variety of colorful veggies on hand that stay cool and crunchy.

Fruit smoothies: Blend your favorite fresh fruits with fat-free or low-fat yogurt and ice for a refreshing drink, or freeze and eat with a spoon like a frozen ice chill.

Mix it up. Make your own trail mix using your favorite unsalted or lightly salted nuts, seeds and unsweetened dried fruits (just be sure to keep your servings to 1.5 ounces or 1/3 cup).

Just slice and serve. Summer months are peak season for most fruits; just slice and serve.

Meet your Villagio neighbors Chuck Moore and Beatrice Snider in next month in the June issue!

Dentistry is more than a career for Dr. Troy Aland, it’s a pas-sion. He treats patients of all ages and has seen a variety of cases which have helped him change the perception of patients who think that going to the dentist is something to be afraid of. “I always feel so encouraged when I’ve worked on a patient and they walk out of my office with a happy smile on their face. That’s why I became a dentist,” Aland said. Dr. Aland attended McQueen High School and UNR, then served a mission where he learned to speak Spanish fluently. “I am able to treat patients on a more personal level when I can commu-nicate directly with them, and that’s been a huge benefit to our practice,” Aland said. Dr. Aland graduated from Brigham Young University and attend-ed dental school at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. After

graduating, he worked at a rural health clinic for three years before opening his own practice. Since opening in 2007, Aland Family Dentistry strives to give patients a unique and personalized experience. “Our goal is to make every patient feel like they are home and know they’ve come to the right place,” Aland said. Dr. Aland and his family enjoy vacationing togeth-er — especially to Disneyland! Troy and his wife, Lisa, enjoy Broadway shows at the Pioneer The-ater, and Troy is a huge Cubs fan. They love to give back to the community by visiting local schools to do dental health presentations. Enjoying an active lifestyle comes back to one

common element — taking care of your health. The mouth is the window to the body. “Visiting our office for dental checkups every four to six months, in addition to proper home care, can help main-tain the health of your gums, and catch any problems before they create bigger health concerns,” Aland said. Our courteous and professional team located nearby at 85 Con-tinental Dr. in Reno is dedicated to making sure you have the most comfortable experience possible. At Aland Family Dentistry, we treat YOU like family.

travel tales

Provided by Cydne Sapperstein, resident of Lakeridge Shores

What a wonderful experience this was!

This year I had a once in a life time invitation to attended the Winter Olympics in Korea. My dear friend, James Long who is a Broadcast Systems En-gineer with NBC extended the invite. I left Feb 23rd arriving the 24th in Seoul Korea. I then took a bullet train to the Alpensia Resort located in the County of PyeongChang. The temperature outside was a brisk 0 degrees! I was given the tour of NBC and had the

wonderful opportunity to see the Russians score GOLD in Gangneung along with the closing ceremo-nies! NBC treated dinner to all IT and Engineering at a Korean barbecue hosted in the city of Jinbu. What a thrill it was to meet the hosts of the individuals who actively worked for six months to orchestrate the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. This trip will stand out as paramount, as it was such a great experience!

Cydne & Lauren Sappersteinfamily spotlightProvided by Cydne Sapperstein, resident of Lakeridge Shores

When I reflect on my life on both challenges and accomplishments, my first thoughts natu-rally go to my four beautiful children. Devin, Steven, Haley and Lauren. A huge portion of my life has been focused raising them to be upstanding adults. I’m proud of them individually and so thankful for all the loving memories.

I now live with my youngest daughter Lauren and together we enjoy many projects and activ-ities, along with our two pets!

I have several hobbies, and mostly I love to create beautiful things… from planting flowers in the yard and cooking a meal or setting a lovely dinner table. I like to look at magazines for ideas and recreate the look either in my home or yard. I have a monogram sewing machine, and sew my own linens and napkins for my table settings, and I love attention to detail, such as my initials on towels and napkins. I enjoy hosting small dinner parties and the motivation to make everything feel nice. I’m project-oriented and love remodeling my home. I enjoy water and snow skiing, bicycling, traveling and hunting antique stores! I enjoy taking vaca-

tions and have a new favorite vacation spot, Porta Vallarta! Or a relaxing stay-cation where I simply turn off phones and enjoy my home and backyard! I grew up on the East Coast and had attended eight schools in just five years from Florida to Maine, as my father was in the Air Force. I started sixth grade in Tustin, CA, and later graduated from BYU, Provo, UT. After serving, my father was hired by Pan American Airlines, and our family had the pleasure of many wonderful trips! How do I relax? That’s an oxymoron! I relax from work by doing projects at home! Otherwise, make a fire, enjoy a movie or read-ing. My last child at home is a freshman at Reno High. I’ve been making lunches for 34 years! She is an excellent student, has a great group of friends and is a delightful person! She plays the guitar and is an exceptional artist. Lauren is the Jr. Journalist in this magazine as well! I lived in Lakeridge Shores 10 years ago and purchased a home then that needed a lot of love. The yard was neglected, and the interior grossly dated and filthy. I worked hard to clean up and remodel it, and afterwards it was donated to Big Brothers and Big Sisters for their home tour, and it was also featured in the Reno magazine. During all the activities, we met many wonderful neighbors, and in turn I received many interior design jobs. Unfortunately, after three years, we moved away, and I missed it badly! So, in April of 2017, I found another Lakeridge Shores home, this time on Spinnaker, and moved back in! I love Lake Stanley and my neighbors, and so happy to be back home! I look forward to meeting many neighbors!

½ teaspoon pepper1 sliced onion

Coat the chicken in:1 cup breadcrumbs

½ cup parmesan¼ cup flour

Spicy MOTHER’S COOKING ALWAYS TASTES BEST!

My mother gave me this recipe years ago. It’s always a big hit and is perfect to make ahead for Mother’s Day, or a

potluck, picnic or backyard party. I prefer to use skin-on, bone-in chicken. For my family, I cook only breasts. Adjust

the spices for your family. Following the recipe exactly gives the chicken a little kick. The heat is not overwhelming at all.

Most of the toys I have are for warm weather, though we used to ski with our season passes, but sort of stopped that lately. We spent Janu-ary and part of February this year on our boat in Hawaii. We also will have the motorcycle out soon. The Reno SCCA sets up a SOLO race course in front of the Air Race Grandstand, and so we will have the race car going for that.

the “back nine”

Lakeridge Men’s Golf ClubGets A “Better Ball!”

Provided by Mike Fleiner, long-time member of the Lakeridge Golf Men’s Club

The Lakeridge Men’s Golf Club is a significant supporter of junior golf in the Reno, Sparks area, donating to both the First Tee of Northern Nevada and the Northern Nevada Junior Golf Association through two avenues. Our annual raffles, which are conducted at our kick-off and year-end dinners. These fund-rais-ers total approximately $5,000 to $6,000 annually which is split between the two organizations. The second is the Barracuda Championship’s “Birdies for Charity Club Challenge.” This pits the Lakeridge Men’s Golf Club against Wolf Run and Wash-oe Golf Clubs. In this fund-raiser, members of each club make a $10 pledge and $1 per net birdie they make during our men’s club tournaments. At the end of the summer, the donation totals are calculated, and each participating member donates to the Re-no-Tahoe Open Foundation. This in turn is given to the First Tee and Northern Nevada Junior Golf Association at the end of the year. To date, the “Birdies For Charity Club Challenge” has raised over $86,000 since 2010. The club that raises the most money is declared the season champion, and to date we have won

that title the last two seasons and four times overall. The Lake Ridge Men’s Club typically raises about $6,000 per year through this fund-raiser. When you total it up, our club is donating ap-proximately $12,000 per year toward junior golf. No other men’s club comes even close to these numbers. It’s one of the reasons we consider the Lakeridge Men’s Club to be the “best damn golf club” in northern Nevada, and probably in the entire state!

Lakeridge Men’s Golf Club Member Benefits: Reduced green fees at Lakeridge year-round discount in Lakeridge Pro Shop Membership in Northern Nevada Golf Association Member-ship in Northern California Golf Association; two-for-one green fee punch card (at participating NNGA courses); handicapping services; 11 weekend tournaments ($3,000 prize fund per tourna-ment); 11 bi-weekly tournaments ($1,500 prize fund per tourna-ment); match play league ($11,000 prize fund per league); club championships (match play and stroke play); Spring “Kick-Off” Dinner Year-End Awards Banquet with significant other.

First Tee Northern Nevada: It all started with a question: Why don’t more kids play golf? Since 1997, The First Tee has grown its network to deliver programs in all 50 United States and select international locations. In 2016, The First Tee brought char-acter education through the game of golf to more than 5.3 million young people. How did we get here? In 1997, a partnership among the LGPA, the Masters Tournament, the PGA of America, the PGA TOUR, and the USGA looked to make that question a thing of the past. To find the answer, they formed The First Tee. The First Tee started as a way to bring an affordable junior golf program to youth and communities that did not have them. What The First Tee soon discovered was that blending the rules of the game with life and

leadership skills, kids and teens didn’t just learn how to putt – they were learning important values. Please visit http://www.thefirstteenorthernnevada.org for details.

Northern Nevada Junior Golf Association (the NNJGA)’s mission is to provide junior golfers in Northern Nevada with the opportunity to experience competitive golf. We believe in self-reliance and accepting responsibility for ones actions through competition. Our level-3 program focus is on golfers who have learned the fundamentals of the game, etiquette, and knowledge of the Rules of Golf. We provide an opportunity for them to test their abilities against other juniors in Northern Nevada. Please visit http://nnjga.org for details.

taste of the town

It’s that time of year … barbecue!

When you don’t want to do it yourself, head to Butcher’s Kitchen Char-B-Que. It’s located in the shopping center at Longley and South Virginia. Butcher’s Kitchen is owned by local father and son BBQ masters, Ed Ferencik Sr. and Jr. Family history, tra-dition and formal training are the ingredients for their success. They char up chicken, ribs, pulled pork, salmon and every cut of beef worthy of BBQ.

The menu allows you to choose your meat served up in burritos, in burgers/sandwiches, or on a plate with a few sides. No matter how you prefer your BBQ, you will not be disappointed. The brisket melts in your mouth with just the right amount of char and spice. If pulled pork is your thing, theirs melts in your mouth. A must try is The Clever, a burger of chuck, pork and pulled pork topped with bacon and cheddar. Go with a big group so you can sample it all! There is tri-tip and even filet! Worth a mention, you can have the meat served up as you like. There are sauces avail-able for you to add to your liking.

Our favorite sides are the sweet potato fries and the ancient grains pilaf (there are several healthy options), but all the sides are prepared expertly. Traditional BBQ sides like beans, slaw and mac n cheese are made in house. And the bread … fresh and tasty.

There is outside seating as well as a comfortable dining room. You may enjoy beer and wine from a varied menu or bottled, canned or

fountain drinks. Stop in for happy hour from 3:30 to 5:30, Monday through Friday. The service is friendly and efficient.

You can also order meat to go and claim it as your own for the next neighborhood potluck! Just a thought. Visit soon, and grab a few extra napkins!

THANK YOU! to Brittany Walshaw, owner of “ Pola Poke Bowls” and Entrepreneur Extraordinaire for her complimentary tastings as an introduction to her awesome new venue ... and to our wonderful residents who attended and gave their testimonials below:

Terry and Karen Claffey, residents of Carriage House, say:“We had no idea what a Poke Bowl was. What a pleasant sur-prise. Glad someone gave us an overview ... and we each decided to try one of the featured bowls. They were wonderful, and we will be headed back in the future to try other bowls and maybe even design our own combos. Also ... the deserts were really good as an added feature. Thanks for letting us have a great adventure and learn about something new!”

Carole and Scott Terrell, residents of The Crest“Scott and I enjoyed the evening, and the food was delicious. The food was fresh, flavorful and full of color. It’s like art in a bowl and tastes delicious! It’s going to become a new lunch favorite.” Regina Lockwood, resident of Caughlin Ranch and real-tor with Ferrari-Lund, says: “What a delight to learn that

Pola Poke is more than just a sushi place! Has no idea about all the varieties of bowls including breakfast items and desserts! Great to learn the menu is so healthy and the restaurant is eco-friendly too! I’ll definitely become a regular!” Ken Kearney, franchisee and owner of Red Hawk Living magazine, says: “I had a wonderful Maxson Bowl at Pola Poke as part of the Lakeridge Lifestyles review. It was my first time here, and I’ll will definitely be back. The bowl had a bed of greens with salmon, tuna, mango, citrus-ponzu sauce, bell peppers, crunchy garlic topping and more. Very flavorful and healthy and really unique. Make a point to stop in and try one of their signature bowls or a creation of your own.”

LifestylesLAKERIDGE9/11 A TRUE ACCOUNTING

FROM DELTA FLIGHT 15

FLIGHT ATTENDANT

JERRY BROWNProvided by Sam Badiner, resident of Lakeridge Shores Town Homes

This is a four-part story written by a flight attendant on Delta Flight 15, Jerry Brown following 9/11 … and a good story after all the bad ones we hear. I had never really thought of what happened to all the other flights headed for the States on 9/11. It has been 17 years since 9/11, so as we approach that anniversary date in a few months, I thought to share here this

wonderful true story about that terrible day: On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, we were about five hours out of Frankfurt, flying over the North Atlantic. All of a sudden, the curtains parted, and I was told to go to the cockpit immediately to see the captain. As soon as I got there, I noticed that the crew had that “all business” look on their faces. The captain handed me a printed message. It was from Delta’s main office in Atlanta and sim-ply read, “All airways over the Continental United States are closed to commercial air traffic. Land ASAP at the nearest airport. Advise your destination.” No one said a word about what this could mean. We knew it was a serious situation, and we needed to find terra fir-ma quickly. The captain determined that the nearest airport was 400 miles behind us in Gander, Newfoundland. He requested approval for a route change from the Canadian traffic controller and approval was granted immediately – no questions asked.

We found out later, of course, why there was no hesitation in approving our request. While the flight crew prepared the air-plane for landing, another message arrived from Atlanta telling us about some terrorist activity in the New York area. A few minutes later, word came in about the hijackings. We decided to lie to the passengers while we were still in the air. We told them the plane had a simple instrument problem and that we needed to land at the nearest airport in Gander, Newfoundland, to have it checked out. We promised to give more information after landing in Gander. There was much grumbling among the passengers, but that’s nothing new. Forty minutes later, we landed in Gander. Local time was 12:30 p.m.; that’s 11:00 a.m. EST.

There were already about 20 other airplanes on the ground from all over the world that had taken this detour on their way to the U.S. After we parked on the ramp, the captain made the follow-ing announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, you must be wondering if all these airplanes around us have the same instrument problem as we have. The reality is that we are here for another reason.” He went on to explain the little bit he knew about the situation in the U.S. There were loud gasps and stares of disbelief. The captain informed passengers that Ground Control in Gander told us to stay put.

To be continued next month…

Sam Badiner, retired Veteran Marine and Pilot

“These bulbs were planted in our vine-yard by previous home owners, but we get the benefit of them blooming every year!” stated Irene.

“Hyacinth” are highly fragrant, bell-shaped flowers with re-flexed petals. The waxy, densely packed florets come in shades of white, peach, orange, salm-on, yellow, pink, red, purple, lavender and blue! The seven to eight leaves of the hyacinth are fleshy, glossy green and strap-shaped.

“Daffodils” are one of the easiest to grow and most popular spring flowering bulbs. If you think you know all about daffodils, consider that there are over 50 species!
