Relocating whether arriving in the UK, moving to west London or simply changing schools is an exciting time for any family but the ongoing success of that transition depends on the support and welcome from the new community. A school needs to offer more than just an exceptional academic curriculum, it also needs to nurture the entire family in their new home, school and community.Having recently been shortlisted for the Relocate Global “School Offering Outstanding Relocation Support” award, the International School of London has a vast wealth of experience in supporting new families. Based in Chiswick and Ealing, the school has set up an award winning Crossroads Transitions team which works diligently with one goal in mind: to ensure that no member of our community gets left behind when they join us. With that in mind and encompassing a collaboration that includes students, staff and parents,a comprehensive programme of support has been put in place throughout the whole academic year. Activities include Transition Workshops for parents and are offered throughout the year to help them understand and anticipate transition issues. Participants get to meet other parents, share experiences of life on the move, learn what to expect at different stages

of transition and strategies to help them adjust: e.g. The Way Forward – Entering Transition, Third Culture Kids Identity and Culture, Moving on or Staying? This really helped one of our current parents: “As a parent, I find transitions workshops extremely useful. Hearing other pupils’ experiences has aided me to understand what my daughter is going through and how I can support her to adapt to a new environment. Overall, our transition has been a very smooth one so far. ISL has played a significant role in it.”The school has a vibrant and active parent community to welcome new members and help them settle into the school and the local area. The dynamic PTA works closely with the school to create not just a fundraising purpose, but also supports the school’s existing and newly joined members of the community through class and language representatives. This will also include Orientation Days and Welcome Coffee mornings. Student-focused activities at the start of the year include: taster days, a buddy system, and a residential tripheld at the beginning of the year at activity centres in the Lake District, Dorset and Yorkshire. These trips are fantastic at creating memories and new friends as quickly as possible! A recently arrived parent highlighted their transition experience:“What really

Local School shortlisted for Relocation Support award

made a difference though were the first few weeks and the great sense of community surrounding the school. Once the initial dust has settled you realise that most of the staff already know your child’s name (and yours as their parent) whereas you vaguely remember their face. You walk around Chiswick and Ealing and you are greeted by parents who live in your neighbourhood and point you towards the direction of the best dentist or yoga studio. All this creates an atmosphere of safety and warmth that is really hard to attach words to.”Our International Food Festival, also held at the beginning of the year, is a fantastic day to bring together the whole school community to celebrate all the different cultures and foods and is another amazing opportunity to meet new people and make friends, parents and students alike! The International School of London is a co-educational school covering Early Childhood to Grade 12 (ages 3 to 18). Students come from over 60 countries and learning is personalised to meet their individual needs. Most pupils live in Chiswick, Ealing and Kew. For more information about the school, please visit our website isllondon.org.

Faanoos 472 Chiswick High Road, London, W4 5TTThis Middle Eastern cuisine has a great setting with a weird but fun and wonderful atmosphere and a burner to make flat bread inside the restaurant. Pleasant staff and great food for lunch and nibbles, the prices are reasonable and it’s another great venue for a birthday or mother’s day meal. You can’t miss it with its bright restaurant front on blue and yellow. Faanoos also have other restaurants in East Sheen and in Town.

Annie’s162 Thames Road Chiswick, London, W4 3QSSituated near the River Thames and serving British food, Annie’s is a perfect location for a satisfying brunch or a sensual dinner any day of the week. Well known for birthday and anniversaries and work celebrations too. They really cover everything and the food is fresh and flavoursome.

Vinoteca18 Devonshire Road, W4 2HDVisited and reviewed last year, I really enjoyed eating at this restaurant. They have the best wine I’ve drank up to date and the food is well presented and well cooked. The setting of the restaurant is lovely; it’s that type of place you’d take a loved one for their birthday to celebrate. They have other restaurants around London too.

Franco Manca 144 Chiswick High Road, W4 1PUFeeling like pizza and want a light tasty meal, Franco Manco is the place to visit. Their Sourdough bases and mozzarella toppings have lots of flavour and aren’t stodgy like other pizza places you’ll visit. You’ll leave feeling satisfied and not feeling like you’ve over done it! It’s a friendly and buzzy atmosphere and can get really busy in the evenings and over the weekend.

The Roebuck122 Chiswick High Road, W4Looking for a friendly, big pub and a good atmosphere; visit the Roebuck! Whether you are a local or making a trip in the car, they have a great outside space for eating which becomes very popular in good weather. This pub has been noted as one of the best pubs on Chiswick High Road by a few people. Also Perfect for a Sunday Lunch!

The Bollo House 13 – 15 Bollo Lane, London W4 5LRThe Bollo is a great pub, offering lots of open space, service from friendly staff and incredible food and drinks; alcoholic and non alcoholic. When we last visited I noted that it’s a perfect location for a team lunch, a couple’s lunch or dinner date and families too. I hadn’t had food quite like the quality in there for a while, the dressings on the salad where even to die for. They have a really scrumptious Sunday Menu as well!

Duffy & BirdBetween the lines…

The pair gigged in pubs and festivals as an acoustic duo, performing distinctive covers from a range of genres including jazz, pop, rock, country and folk - creating a head turning version of everything they took on. However, after a year they had a 40-song master set list and Duffy started to get bored. “Tricia has a lot of energy and drive” explains Bird. “She’s always looking for the next challenge so when she said she wanted to write some original material I knew it would happen and I was equally excited to write and perform our own songs”.It took the pair 9 months from penning their first song ‘I Would Love You’ to releasing their eleven-track album ’5 Lines’ – all the while maintaining full-time careers and home lives.

“Limited free time in the studio actually fired up our creativity, our sessions became extremely productive” says Duffy.

They decided early on to self-produce the album and recorded the majority of the tracks at The Fish Factory, London with engineer Kevan Gallagher at the sound desk. Kevan’s extensive credits

include the likes of Ronan Keating, Annie Lennox and Elvis Costello. “Adding Kevan’s experience into the mix was a critical ingredient for us” says Bird, “he was able to add slick professionalism and bring to life all the ideas I had in my head”.

These elements combined with natural creativity, talent, and passion gives life to an album of rich aural pleasure. Each song offering a human story delivered with soulful connection, warmth and clarity via Duffy’s affecting vocals.

“It’s all about stories with Tricia. She’ll get an idea from something someone has said, or she’s seen on TV and that will percolate in her head until she can write 4-5 lines of a poem. That’s how most of our songs start” – BirdOn the other hand, Bird doesn’t just play the guitar. It is percussive and layered and builds from the back of the room. “Al is highly logical” Duffy says about her musical counterpart. “His musicianship is incredible, but his inspiring skill is the way he listens: he hears how things are developing before we’ve even finished writing them and adds magic touches where you least expect them.“Independent albums of finesse and quality are increasingly rare these days, especially those recorded

With their debut album 5 Lines hot off the press, Chiswick & Farnham based duo Duffy & Bird sat down with us to chat about cover bands, becoming a duo and the chemistry between them, which allowed them to release their first record in very little time whilst balancing careers and private lives.

3 years ago, Chiswick based singer-songwriter Tricia Duffy and musician Al Bird hadn’t yet met. Tricia was singing in choirs, performing at open mic nights, cafes and the odd charity gig. Al was running a business and balancing family life, trying to cut an inch of spare time as often as he could to sit down with his guitar.

Music had taken a begrudging back seat for them both, but the calling remained firmly in the rear view mirror. Serendipity showed its hand as the pair were recruited to play in a rock covers band as lead singer and guitarist, and then in an unlikely turn of events, were asked to perform as a duo at a Surrey festival – thus was the genesis of ‘Duffy and Bird’ and the antidote to both their aspirational frustrations!

without the luxury of infinite studio time or guidance from a record label. With its beautiful rich intricate melodies, you’ll pinch yourself to remember that ‘5 Lines’ is made up of just two voices and a guitar.Highlights of the album include;Eveline - inspired by the devastating short story of the same name by James Joyce. The imagery conveys the brutality of choices facing women torn between duty and the uncertainty of love. Entitled Child - with its driving ska beat, is layered, distorted and percussive, building from the back with soulful smooth vocals. Never Enough - the dark horse of the record. A common tale unusually told from the male perspective with complex chord progressions and subtle key changes.

5 Lines by Duffy & Bird is out now on Bandcamp, amazon, GooglePlay, Spotify and iTunes

How to create the perfect make up look for your wedding day

Beautychiswickmagazine.co.uk | May 2018

Wedding season is almost upon us and as nervous brides start to think about their skin for the big day, make-up artist www.clairenicole.co.uk is here with her top tips to ensure you look your best.

According to Brides Magazine in 2017, the average cost for ‘beauty’ in the wedding budget was £301. When savvy brides are looking to cut prices, doing their own hair and make-up can really save them cash. So, when should they start thinking about their ideal look? Claire says, “Getting married can be a hugely stressful time but it should also be one of the happiest. When you look back on photos you want to see a more glamorous version of yourself, so your wedding day perhaps isn’t the time to take chances when it comes to make-up. Instead, follow these top tips to work with what you know and get that perfect picture.” 3-months before

Hydration is underestimated when it comes to working with skin. Claire believes you should start drinking 8 glasses of water every day 12-weeks before the big day. She says, “The more hydrated we keep our skin, the better the make-up will look and last.”

2-months before If your budget allows, visit a professional for a trial. They can show you how to make subtle changes to your routine that will help your make-up ‘pop’ for the camera. Equally, if it’s too much you can ask them to tone it down. Claire says, “Make-up professionals are great to visit as you will learn so many top tips. If you can afford it this is a great thing to do a couple of months before the big day, to give you time to practice.” 1-month before Time to stock up! Ensure you have a good supply of everything you need to look perfect – after all no-one wants to run out of mascara the morning of! Speaking of mascara, Claire says, “The number one rule of weddings is to wear waterproof mascara – just incase! Make sure you’ve tried it beforehand so as to limit any reactions that may develop if it isn’t compatible with your skin type. Don’t forget that waterproof mascara is wax based and oils from your skin can melt it. Another top tip is to use powder under your eyes to seal away natural oil.” 48 hours before Getting nervous? So is your skin! To make sure you look your best remember to exfoliate and wear a hydration mask. Claire says, “I recommend the gentle

cream exfoliant and hydrating masque by Dermalogica, they’re great for all skin types and will really help you to look refreshed.” Don’t forget your lips either. Claire’s top tip is to exfoliate them by using a gentle tooth brush a few days before ceremony. The big day! The most important thing here is to allow time for your make-up routine on your big day. Keep an hour free at least, this will give you time to get into your dress and a few sips of champagne to get in the spirit. Claire says, “It’s really important to make the most of your day, no bride wants to be rushing. Allow yourself to take in the moment and get those all-important pictures of the time before you become a ‘Mrs’.”

Another top tip for the day itself is to use an SPF. Claire explains, “It’s a common myth in my opinion that you shouldn’t. As most weddings are held in summer if it’s a hot day you will burn – and a red face is a no-no! But if the make-up is applied properly and with the correct use of powders you will still look gorgeous for your photos while keeping your face safe.” Finally, make sure your lipstick and powder is at hand to easily touch up your make-up. Claire adds, “Keep it in the bathroom if you’re in one venue for the day or ask a trusted bridesmaid to look after it for you.”

Sensual Linens Rock this Cozy Zen Beach Cottage aka Size Matters

A variety of linen fabrics & wallpapers rock this cozy beach house. Painting by Fabricio Fabri, F&F Faux Finish Painting, warmed up this lovely East Hampton beach cottage. The window wall is surrounded by faux painted wood boards. The stripes and the faux driftwood boards give this cottage a beachy feel.

The living room is both earthy and sensuous. The soft soothing fabrics simultaneously put you at ease and stimu-late your senses. Designer Jolie Korek claims it’s all about texture in this living room. Guests want to touch all the fab-rics. Fabrics are soft and inviting.

Silhouettes really tell the story in this home. Space is limit-ed - so every inch counts. The lovely end table designed by Jolie Korek, made of Macassar ebony and walnut is rich and soothing. The horizontal Macassar lines replicates the surf feel. It is both elegant and beachy. Star gazing is always fun activity at the home. Horizontal stripes and linen create an earthy transparency.

You Collect Art...A column by Kourosh Mahboubian

www.mahboubianfineart.com

The lowly sheet of paper is the starting point of many creative endeavours. Whether referring to an artist’s sketchpad or a child’s drawing, this material is the first to come to mind when we think of making art. However, it has been my experience that when we think of buying art, we’re more likely to conjure images of canvasses and sculptures than of works on paper. The truth is that works on paper are a vital and thriving part of the art market. Aesthetic issues aside, they provide us with a wonderful way to assemble a collection of original art in a small space, for a fraction of the cost of other media. In the broadest terms, works on paper generally fall into one of four categories, paintings and drawings, prints, photographs, and constructed pieces like collages. There are many variations, subsets and overlaps within these categories. For our purposes here, I will only talk about two-dimensional, non-photographic, original artworks on paper. The photography and print markets are specialty areas that merit dedicated articles of their own. For more

information on photography, please look at my article, “Photography, the Accessible Darling of the Art World”, in the November 2017 issue of this column. I will be covering the print market separately as well, in an upcoming article. Sketches:Artists use sketches as notes or as studies to experiment with or illustrate ideas that will ultimately be produced as a finished product in a larger scale or in a different medium. Sketches are also artworks in their own right and often provide insight into an artist’s process. Bill Gates famously paid nearly 31 million dollars in 1994 to buy Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebook, the “Codex Leicester”. It was the highest price ever paid for a book, but still a bargain compared to the 450 million dollars that were recently paid for his Salvador Mundi painting. That logic can be applied to the lower end of the market too. Sketches are original works that cost less than full-scale finished artworks by the same artist. Drawings:The difference between a drawing and a sketch is that a drawing is intended to

MERLiN AND THE NEW CAMELoT:

The Birth of Collective Christ Consciousness

When the going gets tough,The tough get going …

… straight to the heart, that is, the heart of self. When dreams look distant, the family is feuding and the odds appear to be stacking up, there is only one place to be, in the center of yourself. It is a curious thing that when everything appears to be imperfect, it is actually perfect. We are where we need to be and circumstances are unfolding in such a way to make us a better version of self. It is all a matter of choice. We can change our own minds, but we cannot change others, nor is it our business to do so.

Leading by example, “walking our talk” is of prime importance in the new world we are creating together. Contrary to how it may seem in the media, the adversities we face bring us to a major fulcrum point of change for the better. “Change is in the air” is more than a collective catchphrase, it is our present reality, wherever your domicile may be on the planet. In the Camelot of old, a utopian society of the 6th century in southwest England, a seed was planted in Unconditional Love (the substance of the universe) and it began to sprout. Merlin had nurtured and cultivated the consciousness of King Arthur who was at the helm. Warring factions and unbelief in a good outcome for all superseded then the dream of “All for One, and One for All.” Is our situation any different today?

The complexities of modern living and technological advancement have accelerated exponentially, yet who we are, deep down, governs the patterns and evolution of our lives. It is up to us.

We may study the past and dream of a peaceful, benevolent future for the benefit of society, but it is our present actions that speak louder than words. “Hands that help are holier than lips that pray” said avatar Sri Sathya Sai Baba, teacher of the five principles of living. These principles, watchwords for The New Camelot, are love, peace, truth, right action and non-violence. Are we making choices with our hearts and minds, are we being caring and inclusive of others (“We Consciousness”) or are we fixated on the bottom line? As always, a personal balance must be struck in order to remain centered, practical and loving, that is, a focusing at the heart. A persistence and not a small amount of courage is required to move against a stream of events and do the “right” thing. To speak out, or even to speak up, is de rigueur today. While this may seem to require much effort, we can know that there are invisible forces at work to assist our well-meaning intentions and ultimate manifestations. The Spiritual Hierarchy in the higher realms of existence is supporting us and loving us more than you can imagine as well as the Unconditional and All-Encompassing Love of the universe.

There exists for us in the earthly plane

be finished product, not a study. Drawings may be made in graphite, charcoal, colour pencils or similar materials. They may also be made in ink. The main distinction between a drawing and a painting is the technique the artist used to make it. Paintings: Stylistic choices notwithstanding, there are two common reasons to paint on paper. One is that the artist is using watercolour, gouache, ink or a similar water-based paint that does not work well on other surfaces. The other reason is that, even with oil or acrylic paints, working on paper is convenient, costs less and can be sold for a lower price.

Collages and constructions:This hybrid category presents a broad range of possibilities. The main points to consider are that even when there is photography or print making involved, each collage is a unique original. If a construction is three-dimensional it’s considered a sculpture. Still, a work on

paper will often be smaller and cost less than works in other media by the same artist. This month’s artists:I make a point of illustrating my articles each month with works by contemporary or emerging artists. This month I’m including a collage by the sculptor Tyrone Mitchell, a multimedia drawing and collage by Saul Chernick, a highly detailed biomorphic watercolour painting by Sky Kim and a comparison between an oil on canvas and a watercolour on paper, by the neo-expressionist painter Michael Hafftka. These artists’ works never cease to amaze and impress me. I hope you enjoy them. Finally, I would love to hear from you. I’m always happy to answer my readers’ questions and comments or to be of service if you need advice. Please do not hesitate to contact me through the website listed at the top of the column.

a collective power of consciousness, or mass consciousness, that gathers and holds our ever-increasing level of evolution and expansion. Further beyond, exists an overarching universal energy and consciousness to which we may aspire. The universal Law of Resonance says that a lower vibration will rise to the higher vibration, not the other way around. It has always been so. Every soul will eventually climb up the ladder to great awareness and being, however many lifetimes it may take. Even Mother Earth is wobbling (slightly) her way on her axis as her being ascends within the universe. We can choose to go with her, or not. We must know that our collective evolution is at hand and every soul has a part to play. We may choose to accelerate our way out of our predicament for the universe

unfailingly presents opportunities for us to improve our lot.

As Ascended Master Merlin often says, it is as important to “feel” something as it is to “think” it. Learning to go within yourself, to center yourself through meditation, and to seek your inner knowing is a fundamental skill of survival in The New Camelot. Trusting who you are and following your inner guidance is especially crucial in these challenging times. There is a stillness, peace and truth of being that is found only at the heart, your heart. Being centered in your heart provides the grounded sense of being with which to come forward.

DRAPER LoNDoN – “THE CHANEL No. 5 oF BED LiNEN”

It’s no wonder that luxury columnist Lucia van der Post once called DRAPER LONDON “the Chanel No. 5 of bed linen”. Sleep becomes blissful between their silky-soft sheets and after a restful night, the day seems so much easier and more enjoyable.

DRAPER LONDON is the premium British bed- and bath-linen brand launched in 2016 as an affordably-priced second line of Josephine Home, the bespoke supplier of linen and accessories to celebrities, interior designers and five-star hotels such as Mandarin Oriental.

Founded by former City lawyer, Stephanie Betts, DRAPER LONDON upholds the

luxurious style and quality credentials of Josephine Home with a neat product edit that focuses on accessibly-priced hero bed and bath linen products with real design integrity. The collection aims to delight and endure, with the sensory experience at its heart – both the feel of the sheets and towels against the skin as well as the look of the modern designs.

The capsule collection of bedlinen is cut from a high quality 300 thread-count pure Egyptian cotton, woven in a percale weave in Portugal exclusively for DRAPER LONDON by one of the finest artisanal mills in the world. This unique, lightweight cotton has a soft and silky handle and wears incredibly well.

Curious Traveller Vest: £199Part carry-on, part outerwear, our perfectly desig-ned travel vest will get you from point A to point B without lugging an extra bag along. Fifteen stra-tegically placed pockets keep all your essentials organised and optimally placed without looking or feeling overloaded. It might just be our favourite travel companion.

Pursell Weatherproof Jacket: £225There are two elements to keeping dry in a down-pour. The first is to keep the rain from soaking you; the second is to keep from swimming in sweat. This rain jacket handles both at the highest levels of performance. Comfort and protection come standard in this breathable weatherproof jacket.

Zambezi Trousers Field khaki: £89An Orvis classic, redesigned. Why would they tin-ker with Zambezi Twill, one of their most popular and versatile fabrics for over 20 years? Only one reason: to substantially improve it. Wearers will find these trousers the ideal balance of durability, comfort and enduring good looks.

orvis Heritage Field Coat: £229Available in tobacco and olive.

Its forebears hang in a thousand closets and have seen lifetimes in the field. Orvis have brought this classic field coat back with subtle updates to become the favourite of yet another generation. Revised details join traditional styling in the dis-tinctive, classic Orvis Heritage field coat.

The brand’s trademark pillowcases (£24.50 each), which come beautifully trimmed in a choice of finely-stitched grosgrain ribbon in classic neutrals and bright pops of colour, create visual interest to offset the all-white, luxuriously butter-soft duvet covers and sheets.

Considered attention to detail in the design reflects the exquisite quality and hand-feel of the brand’s exclusive cotton. As an illustration, the DRAPER LONDON duvet has a ‘French tail’ end, to give a classic European finish and for ease of bed-making - solving the problem of fiddly button-closures and ensuring the duvet stays in place.

The brand’s soft Mini Chunky Throws (£395) are knitted in Wales in superfine Geelong lambswool and hand-finished. The sophisticated colour palette of the

throws complements the grosgrain trim of the pillow cases, while the texture of the stitch adds interest and warmth to a well-dressed bed.

Super fluffy and generously-sized plain white bath sheets and face cloths are also woven in Portugal to DRAPER LONDON’s specification in a 600gsm zero twist weight and bath mats in a 1200gsm weight.

DRAPER LONDON is rare in that it also offers luxuriously super-sized sheets (to fit Emperor and Caesar beds) and very deep fitted sheets, as well as extra-large towels and bath mats.

Personalisation of bed and bath linen is available in three font styles, embroidered in a choice of 14 colours of matt thread.

LEoN SCoTT - CHEST WoRkoUT gUiDE

When it comes to my own chest workout I like to mix in compound exercises such as presses, along with isolation exercises including cable crossovers and dumbbell flies to help hit those smaller muscle fibres. I’m not a powerlifter or bodybuilder, so going overly heavy is not something that I need to do. You can still build muscle with lighter weights, not only does this give your muscles the pump it needs, but also helps you to maintain strict and controlled form whilst keeping injury prevention at a minimum.

As far as rep ranges go, I like to reach failure on my final sets, this ensures I have worked the Chest to full capacity. In terms of my own muscle failure I generally tend to fatigue at 8 reps, if I find I can do more than 15 reps, then the weight is too light. Form has to be kept as strict as possible, as I don’t want other muscle groups to come into play. As soon as that happens, you stop working the specific muscle group you’re training and will fall behind in muscle development. This is where the Mind Muscle Connection is so important. By visually and mentally engaging the muscle you’re working and focusing on the contraction of that muscle you will work that muscle to full capacity, therefore secondary muscle groups will not need to come into play.

My Current Chest Workout: • 4 sets of Incline Bench Press combined with Cable Crossovers. This is a ‘Superset’ which combines two different exercises straight after each other with no pausing in-between, other than changing between exercises.• 4 Sets of Flat Dumbbell Press combined with Incline Bench Flies. As above this is a superset.• 3 Sets of four Different Exercises known as a ‘Giant Set’ Incline Bench Press / Pullovers / Chest Dips / Cable Crossovers - With this set of exercises you will perform 3 sets of all four exercises straight after each other without taking any formal rest in between. Press pullovers, followed by chest dips and finally finished cable crossovers. You’ll be pretty pumped after this - trust me!

And that concludes my chest workout. If you want to see my full workout plans for all muscle groups along with my diet on how I stay lean all year round check out my eBook ‘LEAN 365’ at www.leon-scott.com alternatively you can follow my journey via Instagram where I post fitness and motivation advance - @leon3scott.

1. Get a program that suits you.Everyone is different. You may have medical history where a program may not be suited for you. Always consult a qualified trainer to make sure that the fitness program will not hurt you. If the fitness program is not for you, it will only be the cause of frustration and injuries.2. Set realistic targets.Wouldn’t you be frustrated if you set your mind to reshaping your body in a month? Make sure that the body you prefer in a period of time is achievable and realistic. The program should also be practical and will not give you false hopes. It is important to be aware of the blocks you encounter in your daily living. This will help you know what program is satisfactory. And once a program has been reached, then you can set goals and timelines that are realistic.3. Exercises should work on the parts of your body where muscles are.The reason mainly is, when you develop muscles, you burn more calories and then you lessen the fats in your body. Multi-joint exercises and weight lifting are recommended. Learn what exercises work on certain parts of your body. Multi-joint exercises are also said to be effective but time saving.4. Be systematic on working on your muscles.Your muscles should be working harder over time. Repeating the same sets of exercises and same weight without getting your muscles to work harder will not give satisfactory results. You can record your daily results and make the progression based on your previous data. A daily log will also motivate you since you are able to track

ToP FiTNESS TiPS

how far you have gone. It builds confidence since there is a written proof something that was successfully accomplished.5. Perform a set of exercises in 10 repetitions.Every number that was accomplished is called a repetition. Try to make every repetition with less momentum as much as possible. The lesser the momentum, the harder your muscles work. And the harder they work, the bigger they become. To check if there is much momentum when lifting, see if the arm is floating. If the arm does float, then there is much momentum.6. Be flexible and perform a variety of exercises. This is perfect for fitness women because every exercise program should have a variety. You can change your exercises, goals and sets every month to keep you motivated and on the go. Doing this will help you prevent being bored and losing energy physically and mentally.7. Be Motivated! The best way to keep the energy levels of trainees is to allow a healthy competition and allow them to have a sense of control. Having control is having the sense ownership where everybody gets a part in implementing a program. To do this you also need to be consistent in demonstrating your skills. Not all programs work for all types of people. There is no workout that is best for everyone. But you learn from experienced people. Learn to acknowledge blocks and demonstrate self-discipline, keep yourself motivated and work harder every day and add variety. Doing these things, you will discover that a lot of programs will work for you.

FiTNESS ADViCEby Nick Swettenham

Spring is finally here! The long winter is over so it’s that time of year when we all start looking at getting into shape for summer! My name is Nick Swettenham, a personal trainer based in the Chiswick and Richmond area and here are some of my best tips to help you achieve that summer body you’ve been looking for. Before you even think about hitting the gym day in and day out you firstly have to priorities your eating habits. The main aim is to create a calorie deficit in your diet in order to shed body fat and lose weight. Exercising regularly is brilliant but you will only get a flatter tummy if you are burning more calories than you are eating. I personally do not believe in crash and fad diets that make you lose weight quickly. It’s all about a positive, healthy life style change that’s sustainable. Personally I would recommend lowering your calorie intake slowly week per week by say no more than 5-10% a week. For example if you are a woman eating 2700 calories a day when the recommended daily intake is just 2000 you can start by taking off around 270 calories (10%) in week one then by week two your already taking off 540 calories. This then only leaves you 160 calories to take off in week 3. By doing this you won’t just deprive yourself of 700 calories straightaway which can then lead to binge eating etc. You can use apps like ‘Myfitnesspal’ to help you track calories as well as your other macronutrients like Carbohydrates, sugars, protein etc. As important as calories are for weight loss, you can still have a low calorie diet that’s unhealthy. You also want to limit your intake of sugars, unhealthy fats and alcohol. This doesn’t mean stopping them entirely as life is about moderation and to stop eating everything you like is, in my opinion the wrong way to go. Think of it like 80% healthy, nutrient dense foods like lean meats, fish, vegetables (lot’s of greens) and some fruits and 20% treat foods. If you are exercising regularly then this won’t then pile on the pounds. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This doesn’t include coffee and other caffeinated drinks as they dehydrate you. The more you exercise, the more water you drink!A final nutrition tip is to check the glycemic index and avoid foods high in them.

The glycemic index is a number associated with the carbohydrates in a particular type of food that indicates the effect of these carbohydrates on a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar). For example; white rice and white potato. Now for the Gym!Whether you’re a beginner or been training for a while, the main goal to be trim and toned is to try and lose weight whilst achieving muscle definition at the same time. To reach these goals, I recommend increasing your repetitions to 12-15 per exercise. This encourages the muscles to tone up and be more defined. What you don’t want to do is just do a set of say chest press then wait a minute for the next one. This will decrease your heart rate, thus burning fewer calories in a session. The key is to pick say 3-5 exercises at a time and do them in a circuit. Pick exercises that work different body parts, for example a press up, a squat, a bent over row and sit ups. Do all these for 12-15 reps each in a row with no rest. Once you have completed each round of circuits you can rest for up to a minute before each round if you need to. 3 rounds is a good number to work with on each circuit. I also love doing high intensity exercises such as burpees, box jumps, battles ropes, slam balls, skipping ropes and boxing either on a bag or with your gym buddy! All these burn lot’s of calories! Finding other sports you can do that you enjoy outside the gym, such as tennis, football and swimming are also great ways of exercising and having fun!The key to all this is consistency! You don’t have to obsess about your weight or measurements. All that will come in time but getting in the gym regularly 3-4 times a week and having a healthy, balanced life style will make you feel great and motivated to keep going. Anything is achievable. You just have to make it happen!

When you next see a group of kids skipping in the schoolyard, follow their lead, because while it may not be state of the art, the humble skipping rope could be one of your most effective fitness tools. Skipping works wonders for your heart, bones, coordination, balance and brain, and a recent study by a university in Japan has found it can also suppress your appetite.

Researchers discovered that the level of hunger hormones, such as ghrelin, was lower in a group who did three 10-minute bursts of skipping, while a group that cycled for the same time didn’t experience the same drop in appetite. “Skipping is a total body workout,” Professor Robert Newton, foundation professor of exercise and sports science at Edith Cowan University in WA, says. “It activates most of the muscles in the body, it’s fun and it’s virtually cost-free.”

Bones:The movement puts repeated stress on bones, which can reduce the rate of bone loss. “Bone responds and grows due to a change in force. With skipping, you constantly impact the ground and that provides stimulus for bone to grow,” Newton says. “When you walk, the impact on bones is low so it doesn’t really stimulate growth.”Heart:When you use both your upper and lower body, you use more oxygen, improve your body’s ability to use oxygen and enjoy a harder workout. This makes your heart work harder and builds its strength, while also reducing blood pressure. “Activities like skipping, cross-country skiing and rowing activate most muscles in the body and you get a good cardiovascular effect,” Newton says. “Interval training is particularly effective, so skip faster for a minute, then

Skip your way to Health

walk for a minute, skip for a minute, walk for a minute, and do that for about 20 minutes.”Coordination and balance:In skipping your body constantly adjusts with each step. “Your mind has to control all body movements and control the rope and timing as you jump – this all improves balance,” Newton says. It also strengthens the lower back and hip muscles, abdominals, front thighs, hamstrings and buttocks, which all helps to improve balance.Weight: Skipping uses more energy than walking, jogging or cycling because you lift your body off the ground with each skip, and that burns more kilojoules. “When you have to move your whole body, it starts to shed weight to adapt,” Newton says.Brain:The left and right side of the brain have to work together to figure out rhythm, timing and space as you skip. And the regular slap of the rope on the ground can be meditative. An increased heart rate also pumps more blood and nutrients to the brain, which improves alertness and focus.Word of warning: There are a few things to keep in mind if you plan to start skipping but haven’t been physically active for a while. “If you’re over 35 and have any risk factors, check with your GP first,” Newton says. “Stop skipping if you develop aches and stiffness. That means you’re doing too much too soon, so gradually increase the amount you do each week.”Number crunch:For a 50kg person, who exercises for 30 minutes, skipping uses about 314 cals; jogging at 8km/hour burns 204 cals; walking at 6km/hour uses 110 cals; cycling at 15km/hour burns 138 cals; swimming 25 metres/minute uses 132 cals.

THE TRUTH ABoUT PRoTEiN SHAkES

By Dr Sara KayatFounding GP at GPDQ – the UK’s first GP-on-demand-app and resident

GP on ITV’s This Morning’s “Second Opinion”

As a lifestyle medic, my main pillars of health include diet and exercise. Increasingly, these two giants are being married together, to promote optimum health. It is not uncommon to go to your HIIT class and be actively encouraged by your muscle-bound instructor to take in enough protein, and at the end of the class be gently ushered towards the in-house café to buy a protein powder-laden shake. But what are the truths behind this proclaimed powdered nectar?

The amino acids that form protein are an important aspect of our diet, necessary for the building blocks of tissue and muscle growth. Our bodies are able to make many of the amino acids ourselves, but there are some that only can be sourced through diet, and these are called essential amino acids. Often we think of meat as a primary source of protein, but increasingly people are finding the abundance of protein in plant based foods too, though interestingly not all plant based proteins contain all 9 essential amino acids. The main vegan sources of the complete set of essential amino acids are found in quinoa, soy and buckwheat.

The Department of Health (DoH) recommends a daily intake of 55.5g protein for men and 45g for women. As we all come in different shapes and sizes it may be easier to suggest you should be eating 0.75g of protein for every kilogram you weigh. The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), suggest that if you are an endurance athlete, this recommendation does go up to between 1.2 and 1.4g per kg of body weight daily, while those competing in strength and speed events need between 1.2 and 1.7g per kg of body weight. The DoH also advises adults should avoid consumption of more than twice the recommended daily intake of protein. It can be difficult to determine how much protein you are eating, but there are apps you can use that measure the daily macronutrients, but as an example, a chicken breast will contain around 40g of protein, cod 30g, tofu 15g and egg 6g. A protein shake, which is usually made up usually from whey

protein, a by-product of cheese production, can have around 35g per serving.

We do know that increasing your amino acid intake after exercise does indeed increase your rate of making protein and in turn increases the rate of forming lean tissue. But most people exceed the recommended daily protein intake by around 45-55% without supplementation anyway, so this excessive post-exercise supplementation is not often required. Indeed most athletes can achieve the appropriate amount of post-workout protein by simply drinking a glass of milk within 60 minutes of finishing.

So the question is whether there can be too much of a good thing, and what happens to all the excess dietary protein? We know that extra protein is not used efficiently by the body and the protein that is not utilised by the body is converted to sugar or stored as fat, and the surplus amino acids unfortunately can’t be stored and so are excreted in the urine. Eating a high protein diet therefore may impose a burden on the kidney and liver which have to filter these waste products, and in people who may already have chronic diseases of these organs, it may even cause damage to the functioning of the

organs.

Thought must also be turned to those who are consuming a high protein diet for weight loss. Consideration should be made for the saturated fat content in a lot of the high protein foods such as red meat, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. For those who opt for a protein shake rather than a steak, it is worth remembering that the extra 300 calories from the protein shake you drink post-workout is still adding to your daily calorific intake, and will need to be “worked off” to avoid weight gain. There will then be those who are replacing meals entirely with high protein shakes to avoid this added calorific content, but again this is not recommended as these processed shakes are fairly nutrient deficient. It is important not to completely neglect other food groups and the nutrients that they contain. People often neglect the importance

of carbohydrates in our diet. The NHS “eat well” plate suggests that one third of our diet should be made up of carbohydrates. Whilst it is important to reduce the processed carbohydrates from our diets, consuming whole grains, fruit and vegetables is imperative to ensure we are getting enough fibre, vitamins and minerals for bowel health, and reducing the risks of conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers.

Essentially, if you’re healthy and eat a balanced diet, you are unlikely to need protein supplements. If you have a diet low in protein or have a very large muscle mass (body builder) you may benefit from supplements, but you can just as easily increase your amount of dietary protein and achieve the same results.

THE KEY CLINICREBALANCING THE BODY ❊ RETUNING THE SENSES ❊ REWIRING THE BRAIN

is your Child School Ready?

When we prepare to send our children to school, we rarely question how they are hearing. Regular hearing tests simply look for deafness, they do not actually assess how a child hears language.

“Some children have a problem in the way in which they hear things”, says Sarah Warley, Founder of The Key Clinic, which specialises in cutting-edge techniques for many childhood difficulties.

Distortions in a child’s hearing or hypersensitive hearing can make it hard to follow what is being said and can make a child distracted in class. Such distortions can also lead to delays in speaking and processing language.

A more advanced hearing test can clearly identify if this may be a problem for your child and any identified hearing problems can then be overcome by special auditory training at The Key Clinic, making the processing of language much easier.

The Key Clinic has the aim of unlocking the potential of children who are struggling with learning and behavioural problems, either at home or at school. The clinic specialises in neuroplastic healing techniques for many childhood and adult difficulties. Techniques are cutting-edge, drug-free and have lasting results.

Launched in 2015 by psychologist, Sarah Warley, The Key Clinic is based in West Berkshire – just an hour’s drive down the M4 from Chiswick – and uses a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach based on a cutting-edge understanding of neuroscience to find the right key to unlock your child’s potential.

Make sure your child has the best possible start to their school career.

as coping mechanisms, that only act to escalate the problems and isolate them further - drinking, drugs, eating disorders, avoiding friends and family, giving up their hobbies, faith, work. It’s a natural response because once someone starts to focus inwardly they have already discounted, not thought about or had experiences which have led them to believe that they cannot be helped. But what is help? The important thing about seeing a therapist is that you are meeting with someone who you do not know and who does not know you. This means that the problems you might experience in trying to talk to friends and family do not exist - you can feel more relaxed and speak freely, your conversations will be confidential, you do not have to worry about the therapists feelings, do not have to worry that they might not cope with you being upset, might change their opinion of you, be sure that they are there because they are

focussed on helping you and as you are the client you are in control. One of the common problems people experience about sharing their struggles is a worry that somehow control might be taken away from them - with a therapist that is not the case.Crucially though finding the right therapist for you is essential. Research consistently shows that the single most important factor in finding therapy helpful is the quality of the relationship someone has with their therapist. It is true that we go through years of training, undertake our own therapy, have experience in talking about things often not talked about in everyday life, so we might have some new way of looking at things, be able to share a wisdom but to know if you have found the right therapist I suggest you ask yourself “Do I feel lonely now I have my therapist to talk to?” If the answer is no, or not so much then I think you have found the therapist who is right for you.

i’M A THERAPiST BECAUSE oF LoNELiNESS

Dr Nicholas Rose

For me, therapy works because the person struggling with something on their own no longer feels on their own! People come and see me because they are depressed, anxious, having panic attacks, having relationship problems, drinking too much, having problems becoming pregnant, have PTSD, are diagnosed with a mental health disorder, are suicidal, having trouble managing their anger but the baseline is they are coming to see me because they are alone with a struggle. No longer feeling alone brings a sense of relief and hope. The change, no matter how subtle brings new energy and makes it possible to express something that has previously been impossible to express. Feeling more relaxed means we can start to see the wood for the trees, be more rational, think about things more clearly, which in turn helps us to feel better. It is only once we can express our difficulties we can start to

understand them and once we understand them we have a chance of fixing them.Although loneliness has been much in the news lately, the importance and scale of it is I think, vastly overlooked. In my experience people find it hard to identify that they are lonely or even if they do feel lonely fail to see the importance of it.When a person finds it hard to make sense of something, be it their thoughts, feelings or how they are experiencing themselves they can get stuck in their internal world. So they will find their thoughts going round in circles, have ever increasing and overwhelming negative feelings, have bodily symptoms - and the more they try to get out of the struggle the worse it gets. This is a really lonely place to find yourself in.When people find they cannot rely on themselves to find a solution they may move towards other behaviours, initially

TreatmentThere is no specific treatment for dengue fever or severe dengue. Treatment is mainly supportive. Hospitalisation may be required for severe dengue to manage fever, blood clotting and most importantly fluid balance.

How can you prevent it?- avoidance of mosquito bites during daylight hours particularly around dawn and dusk- cover up- sleep under a net- apply mosquito repellent- there is no vaccine available to prevent dengue in travellers

Risk for TravellersAll travellers to dengue endemic areas

are at risk even for short term visitors. The chance of contracting dengue is determined by the destination, season of travel, length of exposure and the intensity of transmission. The incidence of dengue in travellers is probably underestimated and underdiagnosed as reporting is not mandatory in some countries and the symptoms may be non-specific.+richmond practice offers travel clinics and if you would like to consult a GP/Paediatrician before you travel please do not hesitate to arrange an appointment by calling 0208 9405009 or visit richmondpractice.co.uk for more information.

PLANNiNg To TRAVEL? giVE A THoUgHT To DENgUE!

In recent decades, due to International travel, dengue fever has been reported to be the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease in the world. It is currently endemic in over 125 countries mainly in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide like in South-East Asia, Western Pacific and the Americas, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.

What is Dengue Fever and how does it spread?Dengue fever also known as “breakbone fever” is caused by a virus, transmitted by female mosquitoes. Unlike other mosquitoes, they are day-time feeders; peak biting periods are early in the morning and in the evening before dusk. The dengue virus comprises of 4 distinct serotypes.

SymptomsIncubation period is about 4-7 days and is characterised by:- sudden onset of high fever- severe headaches- pain behind the eyes - muscle and joint pains- loss of appetite- nausea- rash

Consult your doctor if:Check any unexplained fever. Not everyone exhibits symptoms. The symptoms of the first infection are usually self-limiting and confer lifelong immunity to the particular serotype of dengue virus. However, subsequent infections with other serotypes may result in severe dengue (dengue haemorrhagic fever) which is potentially fatal. Diagnosis is based on the clinical picture and confirmed by blood test (serology and viral detection).

Chilli-garlic Chicken CoodlesIn the spring of 2014 low-carb dieters were overjoyed to receive news about spiral vegetable slicers or spiralizers. These simple devices helped overweight strivers or gluten-sensitive people to avoid common cereals by turning veggies into low-calorie pasta alternatives. Courgettes or zucchini quickly became the popular ingredient for making guilt-free vegetable noodles called coodles or zoodles respectively. Courgettes originated in Central and South America where they were eaten for thousands of years. The French called them Courgettes, the name which later was borrowed and assimilated by the British. Later courgette seeds were brought to the Mediterranean by Christopher Columbus and were subsequently spread throughout Europe and Africa. Now this green - or yellow - skinned relative of the pumpkin is widely used ingredient in thousands of healthy dishes. Speaking nutritionally the primary benefit from consuming courgette is its ability to enhance digestion and facilitate the food passage through the gut. It contains a wide variety of soluble fibres which are readily digested by the beneficial intestinal microflora. These good bacteria enhance immunity and overall health. Being a classic seasonal vegetable the courgette shows pronounced cell-protective, antioxidant, antitumor and anti-inflammation properties. Hence it’s highly recommended for inclusion into numerous therapeutic diets. Again, our spicy and tasteful recipe comprises of the highly-digestible chicken breast. Low-cholesterol poultry meat is rich in essential amino acids and minerals like iron, copper and zinc. The sesame oil which is used for sautéing the meat is about forty percent oleic acid is a mono-unsaturated fatty acid or MUFA. Diets that are high in MUFA were proven to decrease the risk of cardio-vascular diseases by lowering both the blood lipid level and the total cholesterol. While carbs should provide a good percentage of your daily calories, this is a great low –carb option for when you’re trying to balance the nutritional books.

Sesame-Chilli Avocado SaladAvocado was a common food for the Aztecs and Mayas for centuries. Then this protein and oil-rich fruit spread over to the Caribbean by the Spanish conquistadors. Avocado was firstly introduced into Florida in 1833 and into California in 1856. As early as the beginning of 20th century it was already extensively traded between the Caribbean and East Coast cities. Thanks to the distinct buttery taste the alligator pear (named after the shape and alligator-like skin) secured its place in San Francisco cuisine as an integral ingredient of the “alligator pear salad”. Seemingly firstly described in 1880, the salad gained huge popularity in the early 1900s. The recipe didn’t change since it was first mentioned. It is still made of gently sliced avocado, offering numerous healthy options and useful nutrients. Oil is the most important and beneficial of the avocado’s constituent parts. It is composed mostly of monounsaturated fatty acids that provide avocado consumers with lower risks of metabolic syndrome, obesity and coronary heart disease. Additionally the alligator pear is rich in vitamins C, E, B6, folic acid and vitamin K. The latter is responsible for blood clotting and in the plant-based form phylloquinone is considered as a primary dietary source of vit K for humans. The next time you do the shopping grab some alligator pears and try this tasty, quick-to-make and cardio-friendly salad!

Quinoa and Vanilla Pancakes with Vanilla Poached Peaches, Vanilla Yoghurt and Peach Coulis

Makes 4-6Pancake mix

260g self raising flour2 eggs

80g caster sugar1 pinch of salt

1 tsp baking powder30 melted butter280ml whole milk

130g cooked quinoa1 vanilla pod

For the pancakesFor the pancake mix, mix all the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt and baking powder)

Add the eggs and then the milk slowly, making sure to mix everything together without any lumps. Finally add the melted butter. This is a great recipe for American style pancakes but to make our fantastic quinoa and vanilla pancakes then add in 130g cooked quinoa and the

seeds of one vanilla pod and mix well. For the toppings

-Bring your sugar syrup to the boil and add one vanilla pod whole. Drop 8 peaches (14 halves) into the boiling liquid. Take the liquid off the heat and leave peaches to slowly poach in the syrup for around an hour, or until soft.

-To make the coulis, take 4 peach halves out of the syrup and blend (in a Nutri-Bullet or similar) with 2-3 tablespoons of the syrup mixture. You are looking for a creamy consistency with a light peach colour.

-For the vanilla yoghurt, mix 150gs of Greek yogurt with the seeds of one vanilla pod and 3-4 tablespoons of the peachy sugar syrup.

To serveLightly oil a non stick frying pan and put on the highest temperature. When the pan is very hot turn it down to a medium heat and spoon a large

tablespoon of the quinoa pancake mix in. Flip the pancakes when you see bubbles on the top of them.Layer 3 pancakes on top of each other, a tablespoon of yoghurt on the side of the plate, the coulis drizzled on top and and 2-3 peach halves on top.

Enjoy!

It might not be summer yet, but it is coming soon and ice cream makers Venchi are planning the perfect summer’s day ice cream and you can’t get any better than a fresh, Italian gelato from Venchi. Venchi, founded in 1878 by Silviano Venchi, uses recipes inspired by 140 years of heritage and art of chocolate and gelato making. Venchi’s traditional Italian gelato is made fresh everyday using the finest ingredients and British milk at each of its five London locations. Flavours include white chocolate with nuts, salted toffee, cappuccino, pistachio and also dairy-free and seasonal tropical sorbets. The Richmond store has “gelato laboratories” in-store where guests can watch the gelato being made by hand throughout the day. Each Venchi store also has a running tap of warm, melted chocolate spread which can be drizzled across your cup or around your cone which can then be dipped into a selection of nuts.Venchi has 90 different flavours of gelato across the brand which are all free from chemical flavourings, colourings and hydrogenated fats. Visitors can customise their gelato by mixing-and-matching flavour combinations and adding an array of toppings such as pistachio and hazelnuts from Italy.Founded in 1878 by Silviano Venchi, the family-owned business is passionate about chocolate in all its forms from nougat and pralines to gelato as well as hot chocolate and chocolate spreads – all made with the most wholesome ingredients.

Inspired by 140 years of Italian legacy, Venchi crafts its chocolates in the unique Piedmont style, which earned the region its name of the “birthplace of Italian chocolate.” Ingredients such as Piedmont IGP hazelnuts and Sicilian pistachios reflect the story and Italian heritage of artisanal chocolate making, which has been passed down through each generation.Using carefully selected ingredients from only the very best suppliers, Venchi sources pistachios andalmonds from Sicily, olive oil from Ligurian Riviera and uses the finest Cocoa plantations in Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru. Chocolate products made in the Venchi Piedmont factory are free from gluten and palm oil.

The gelato uses fresh milk and is made on site each day by a trained gelato maker in store. The gelato is made from a balanced recipe of high quality ingredients and is also free from chemical flavourings, colourings and hydrogenated fats.

Making no compromises, Venchi is focused on delivering premium ingredients, using the finest raw materials and balanced recipes to bring its core values of tradition and joy to life. Sometimes, there’s just that one thing that will make you feel better after a day that has not gone according to plan. That mouthful of something humble can evoke memories of happier times, just when you need reminding. Perhaps you just deserve something nourishing, flavourful and homemade, with no good reason other than you fancy it.Comfort food makes us feel better. It can nourish more than just the body, but the mind and the soul too, which is exactly what food should be about. Comfort food isn’t simply about getting nutrition from certain foods for the sake of physical health, but enjoying the cooking and eating experience, with all the satisfying moments that make you feel happy, secure and at home, wherever you are.Everyone has their favourite comfort foods. And comfort food can be whatever you want it to be, as long as it makes you feel good. Perfectly imperfect, unpretentious and made with love are the common ingredients in all comfort foods – everything else is up to you. Whether you want to eat it from your favourite bowl, from a tub on a picnic blanket or from a paper bag at the seaside, comfort food is all about tasting your food and enjoying the moment.Comfort food is often associated with autumnal and wintry foods: think casseroles and golden pastries, anything creamy and of course, sugar-coated puddings. These may not be commonly associated with vegan food, and especially vegan food that can be prepared in fifteen minutes. It is a misconception that vegan comfort food takes hours to prepare, as without any meat, fish, eggs or dairy products there are fewer food-safety risks, and the basic ingredients can be easy and quick to cook. Embrace new ingredients (or those unopened ones at the back of your storecupboard). It’s also very easy to substitute familiar products with vegan alternatives, which are now widely available and affordable. Vegan cooking is easy when you step out of the ‘meatand-

two-veg’ way of thinking. There’s no limitation to what you can create, with familiar kitchen equipment and no specialist cookery skills required. Alongside the operational ease of cooking vegan comfort food the fast, easy way, you can rest assured that the food you are eating is cruelty free. When you make the ethical decision to lead a vegan lifestyle, or create a meal that is vegan, you are making a conscious choice to be cruelty free, where no animals are exploited. Take comfort in the ethical choice you’ve made, alongside enjoying the delicious food you’ve created. An increasing number of people are choosing to lead vegan lifestyles for many different reasons, including ethical values, sustainability, reduction of food costs and environmental issues, and more people are questioning where their food comes from and the production methods used. This in turn makes cooking and eating a more mindful process, being aware of what your food is and how it makes you feel. Veganism brings a new dimension to comfort food, where you will find comfort in your choices, as well as in the bowl of food you have in front of you.an extract from Kate Beskow’s book 15 minute vegan comfort food.

Marianna Herold - Chiswick2 boys who are 5 and 3 years old

I first heard about bubble when my husband and I were browsing through the app store looking for apps to help us find a babysitter. We have previously used other childcare agencies and platforms, so I was quite familiar with how they worked.

I did think bubble was a lot more professional and easier to use that other babysitting platforms as you can view sitter profiles and see their reviews. It instantly puts you at ease.

I use bubble between once and twice a week, it’s great because it has allowed me to regain some flexibility back into my life. I can book

sitters at short notice and that’s what I love. You can message sitters through the app which is brilliant if you’ve booked a sitter that you haven’t used before. I often ask sitters to come around a bit earlier just so I can introduce the children.

My favourite elements of the app are that you can see sitter profiles, it’s very easy to make a booking and the cashless element of the app is a huge bonus. It’s also great as you can see the sitter’s reviews and they can see yours. The fact that you can also message through the app also makes the whole experience a lot easier.

I use a sitter called Andrew quite a lot, he is a natural with the children and they love having him around.

WHAT PARENTS WANT MoST iN THEiR NANNiES

Jayne Ehrlich is a former teacher, counselor, and writer. She created her first agency, malibu mamas in 1988, during a Writer’s Guild of America strike in 1988. Although this was going to be a temporary endeavor --until the strike ended -- malibu mamas quickly became successful and was even in development to be a sit-com. (Imagine the possible scenarios!) Jayne added Hometown Nannies in 1989, originally as a purely live-in service. Next month, Hometown will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Jayne still works with each family client and does all of the candidate interviews. HTN is proud to have been an innovative force in the Household Staffing Industry for three decades. Along with our intensive screening, our wide menu of services and our highly-touted boutique services, Jayne offers her creative approach, her counseling background and round-the-clock services to her International clientele.

Many years ago, in 1998, a few months after I started malibu mamas—which later, 3000 miles East, -- morphed into Hometown Nannies+ -- the agency got a call from a single mom, one of the first women production heads at a major studio. Some moms, especially the ones with endlessly demanding careers told us that they “needed a wife”. But Dawn, the production chief, told me something more. She wanted a nanny who would “take a bullet” for her child. I realized, at that time that thisrequest was metaphorical; unfortunately, it later came to mean something more. In the ensuing years, we’ve placed thousands of nannies and domestics. Although many parents think that their nanny wish-list is unique, it really isn’t. Most families want a nanny who is smart, reliable, flexible as to duties and hours, who can travel, who speaks fluent English but also speaks Spanish, Mandarin, etc., who is athletic, who is well-versed on the developmental needs of the family’s child or children, and who loves the children like family. (Excellent driving, legal status and a solid

education are givens.) Most pertinent is that all families want a caregiver who will make their children feel safe and secure and loved. Our slogan used to be “behind every woman (or man) was a great nanny”. While that may or may not be true, many of us no longer live near our extended family. If we do, our relatives may well be multi-tasking in their own daily lives, leaving little or no time to help us raise our children. The percentage of working women with rocketing careers expands each year. So, nannies, once the provenance of royalty, are truly essential for working and busy moms everywhere.

In some ways, it’s more difficult to find a great nanny now than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. What I’ve noticed is that anyone who has ever babysat, calls herself a nanny. These days, on average, we peruse hundreds of resumes to find a handful of candidates with whom we would like to meet. The question I been asked most often, in our almost thirty-years of domestic matchmaking, is how we screen our nannies. Each time I speak with a new mom or dad, I reiterate:

MY 1ST YEARS CEo AND Co-FoUNDER DANiEL PRiCE

CoMMENTS:

We are celebrating all things Royal this year, with the arrival of Royal Baby No.3 and our new limited edition Royal Range, which is available at www.my1styears.com and Harrods. As part of the range we have re-designed old classics, including our hugely popular robes, by introducing Limited Edition Purple and Gold thread to give the collection that extra Regal feel. From previous experience we are one retailer who really appreciates the ‘Royal Effect’, and we expect that whichever name the new Royal Baby has, it will surge in popularity in the UK. I understand that the current favourite names for the new prince are Arthur, Albert and Philip. From our recent research, Philip and Albert don’t yet rank on our popularity list for boys and Arthur is only number 31. George however is number 5, which is no doubt due to this ‘Royal Effect’. I am sure that whichever name the royal couple choose for baby number three, it will soon rise up the baby name charts and make our list for the top 10 most popular names for personalisation at www.my1styears.com.

When a Royal Baby is born, we undoubtedly see a big spike in consumer spending - from our experience, it definitely increases the nation’s spending habits. We are expecting this year to be bigger because of the Royal Wedding which will follow the birth. The sales and hits we experienced when Prince George wore our Blue Gingham Robe in 2016 was pretty special - it really was a moment for us. Our customers are really loving our Royal Range and overall theme at the moment, as it’s part of our story as a brand too. Other retailers rightly jump on the trend because the Country gets excited, and with excitement comes consumer spending. Our My 1st Years Blue Gingham Robe as worn by Prince George when he met Barack Obama, sold out in 7 minutes, and then when available for pre-order sold as many as 1 per second. This is the scale of the impact - the Global impact of this image for us was huge and it allowed us to really expand our retail reach Internationally, especially in the US, who just loved the Royal and British connection instantly.’

We pre-screen via phone, meet all candidates who pass the telephonic test at least twice, check references, do a complete background check and more. We look for intelligence, education, promptness, presentability, articulation, common sense, and an ardent passion for working with children. But we also look for something else. We look for a stable and loving family background and for candidates withdreams, ambitions, and curiosity. Although we are limited by law as to some of the interview questions we may ask, we aim to learn as much as we can about the candidates’ upbringing, family relationships and values. Does she/he have a five- year plan? Does it include working with children, embracing higher education, becoming a better care-giver? What are her/his strategies for keeping children safe? There are career nannies and governesses, of course, as well as many caregivers who do not stay in the work force. Those with the most education often move on after a few years, to higher degrees, to related or unrelated professions, such as nursing, teaching, business, and medicine, to name a few. Some nannies remain on the job for couple of years; some for decades. However long her/his tenure, families have similar wish lists. They want their children happy, healthy, and safe. Back on the day Dawn told me what she wanted in a nanny, times were so much gentler. Her words were truly metaphors. The safety of our children was on a different playing field. Today, parents and nannies have so much more responsibility. We are all working hard to make the World a safer and happier place for our children. It isn’t easy. We all know how Dawn felt.

aBOUT US:Prior to founding malibu mamas in 1988 and Hometown Nannies+ in 1992, Jayne Ehrlich was a teacher, a counselor and a writer. She is a member of the Writers Guild of America west. She graduated from the Bronx School of Science in New York University, has a degree in English from New York university, and has a Masters in counseling from Goddard College. As an educator and mother, Jayne knows that each family has very specific domestic needs. She seeks candidates she herself would hire. Requirements for domestic applicants are stringent, screening is thorough, and each applicant meets with Jayne — usually more than once. Client families receive a comprehensive file on each domestic candidate and two interviews are advised.Over the past 30 years, Hometown Nannies+ has placed thousands of world-class baby nurses, nannies, governesses, housekeepers, couples, cooks, valets, household and estate managers, companions and cnas, personal assistants, and more. Hometown Nannies excels in the placement of special-needs nannies.Although her client list is confidential, Jayne reveals that three of her first jobs were to find: party staff for the late Frank Sinatra; an upstairs maid for the late Miss (Anne) Bancroft; and an Italian-speaking, baseball-playing manny for the family of a major movie star. “And that was just the beginning.” she notes.Jayne’s 30 years of recruiting experience, screening expertise, thoroughness, and boutique service have ensured successful staffing for the most discerning homes, both locally and globally.

WHY NAMiBiA iS THE PERFECT DESTiNATioN FoR PRiNCE

HARRY AND MEgHAN MARkLE

Princess Diana’s favourite island hopes its connection to the family makes it an ideal place for this romantic getaway.

It’s no surprise that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would have their hearts set on a honeymoon in Namibia. The destination’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes, such as its moon-like deserts, tall sand dunes, deep canyons, snaking rivers, sprawling pans and sweeping coastline, are home to rare species, like black rhino, cheetah and the desert-adapted elephant, as well as the most stunning and private luxury camps and lodges. As the second least populous country in the world, the newlyweds will have no problem finding the perfect private retreat with all the comforts of a royal home-away-from-home and more. Read on to discover why Namibia is the top honeymoon hotspot for Prince Harry and his bride-to-be Meghan Markle.Privacy over paparazzi…With the spotlight firmly on the dazzling couple, privacy is of the utmost importance when choosing a honeymoon destination. Namibia is the perfect place for the royal pair to escape and relax away from the gaze of the public and the paps. The word Namib roughly translates to ‘vast place’ and the country is one of the most remote destinations in the world, so there is no surprise that the Prince and Meghan would chose it for a luxurious secluded honeymoon.Situated in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, Dunes Lodge, Wolwedans is so far from any human centre that there is no light pollution. The skies above the lodge are some of the darkest on the planet. The couple can marvel at inky blue skies and twinkling stars in the desert with 360-degree views from their own private chalet. Prices for a private chalet per night start from £823, based on two people sharing. www.wolwedans.com/lodges-camps/dunes-lodgeHistory of wildlife conservation and protection…The Prince is a Patron for Rhino Conservation Botswana as well as a volunteer for conservation and anti-poaching programmes in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Because of his passion and dedication to wildlife protection, Namibia is the ideal fit for Harry. Over 40 per cent of the country is under conservation management and

because of its commitment to sustainable tourism, Namibia is now home to the world’s largest free-roaming black rhino population with camps offering responsible rhino tracking on foot.Desert Rhino Camp, Damaraland offers exclusive access to vast tracks of the best wildlife areas to view Africa’s largest free-roaming black rhino population on foot and to help contribute to its conservation. The camp lies in the 450 000-hectare Palmwag Concession in Damaraland, a region marked for its stark, minimalist beauty and surprising wealth of arid-adapted wildlife. Prices start from £550 per night, based on two people sharing. www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/desert-rhino-campHollywood connection...Namibia’s dramatic landscape has been used as the location for Hollywood blockbusters such as Mad Max, A Space Odyssey and Flight of the Phoenix. Over the years even Hollywood power couples, such as Brad and Angelina, chose to holiday in the destination, staying at luxurious Okonjima and enjoying the high-touch service, boutique accommodations, infinity pool and gardens, all situated in the 200km² private nature reserve.Prices at the exclusive African Villa at Okonjima where Brad and Angelina laid their heads with their growing brood start from £906 per night, based on two people sharing. www.okonjima.comLuxury camps...In Namibia, Meghan and Harry will have their pick from a number of exclusive lodges. While many have pegged Hoanib Valley Camp as the top contender, its sister property is an equally stunning option. Shipwreck Lodge, in Skeleton Coast National Park, is one of the hottest hotel openings in Namibia for 2018. Set to open summer 2018 and inspired by the numerous historical shipwrecks along the dramatic coastline, the lodge is the perfect luxury hideaway for the royal pair.Fully inclusive double room rates start from £524 per night. Stays will be offered by Journeys By Design when its doors are open in June 2018. www.journeysnamibia.com/Destinations/shipwreck-lodge

WHY THE ExCLUSiVE CARiBBEAN iSLAND oF

NEViS CoULD BE THE RoYAL HoNEYMooN DESTiNATioN

Princess Diana’s favourite island hopes its connection to the family makes it an ideal place for this romantic getaway.

Following the announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal engagement, the small Caribbean island of Nevis has been eagerly waiting to hear if the soon-to-be newlyweds will choose the secluded spot as their honeymoon destination.

Prince Harry first visited the exclusive island in 1993 when he stayed with his mother, Diana Princess of Wales, at the Montpelier Plantation and Beach. The former sugar plantation that rests on the historic Montpelier Estate was also where Admiral Lord Nelson married Fanny Nisbet in 1787.

The island welcomed Prince Harry back on 23 November 20161 as part of his official tour on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. During his one-day visit, His Royal Highness released baby turtles into the sea on the appropriately named Lovers Beach, one of the world’s most secluded beaches.

Officials in Nevis are now anticipating the royal decision.“As it is one of the most romantic islands in the world, we are quietly confident that Nevis’ guaranteed privacy will attract the royal newlyweds,” says CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority, Greg Phillip.Remaining largely untouched and unchanged by growing tourism demands, Nevis reflects the Caribbean the way the region used to be. With its pristine beaches, lush greenery and beautiful natural surroundings, it’s an idyllic escape for romance.Couples looking to explore Nevis beyond the secluded beaches have the chance to discover the exotic wildlife enroute to the

enchanting rainforest and Nevis Peak - the island’s volcano. And for those looking to stay near sand but still have an active time, Nevis offers couples the chance to partake in watersports, and even spot local marine life such as wild sea turtles and stingrays.Due to the size of the island, all restaurants on Nevis use locally sourced natural ingredients to create truly unique Nevisian dishes. The deliberate ban on fast food restaurants has helped positioned the island to be one of the world’s healthiest natural retreats.

Without a doubt, Nevis would provide the new royals the privacy and escape needed for an unforgettable honeymoon. The island guarantees all couples superlative service, luxurious accommodations and world-class cuisine.

Getting to Nevis from the U.K.BA offers two flights per week to and from St. Kitts on Wednesday and Saturday from London Gatwick Airport to Robert L Bradshaw International Airport. The fight duration is 9 hours and 50 minutes, including a brief stopover in Antigua. Nevis is a 10 minute ride from St. Kitts by water taxi. For the best packages and to book visit b a.com/stkitts or call 0844 4930758.There are also daily flights to Antigua with BA and Virgin with with TradeWind Aviation fordirect connections to Nevis on Fridays, and Sundays.
