Stress Management
by Priscilla ButhelloAnything that keeps you away frombeing yourself causes stress.
Stress occurs when the pressure isgreater than the resources.
It is a byproduct of the reactionpeople have to excessive pressure. It isdominated by worry, anxiety and hencedifficult to cope with. The process ofstress management is one key to ahappy and a successful life in modernsociety. Although it provides numerousdemands that can prove difficult tohandle, stress management alsoprovides a number of ways to manageanxiety and maintain overall well –being.
Traditionally it wasconceptualized to be a result of externalinsults beyond the control of thoseexperiencing the stress. More recentlyhowever it has been argued thatexternal circumstances do not haveintrinsic capacity to produce stress, butinstead their effect is mediated by theindividual perceptions, capacities andunderstanding.
Firstly recognize thesource of negative stress. This is not anadmission of weakness or inability to

The Panama Papers
“Panama Papers,” have embarrassed
several world leaders and shone a spotlight
on the shadowy world of offshore
companies. Mossack Fonseca, who
practises fiscal optimization and specializes
in setting up offshore companies, has said it
broke no laws, destroyed no documents, and
all its operations were legal. Governments
across the world have begun investigating
possible financial wrongdoing by the rich
and powerful.
The papers have revealed financial
arrangements of prominent figures. We
have perused some of the Papers, but
haven’t yet identified any members of our
community. We are not so lucky or so
destined! Indians have been named. No East
Indians? Is this discrimination?
So early one morning last month, while
driving for a Board of Management meeting
in SoBo, the hot topic of the morning was
the Panama Papers. I sensed a mood of
affront at being left out. There was no way,
with my career as a Solopreneur that could
have given me the financial backing to be
listed. This was sheer betwaddlement. It
gave us a sense of premature ventricular
contractions.
So that evening when I returned home, I
began making calls to the Fonsecas from
Bandra, then the Fonsecas from Cavel, the
Fonsecas from Colaba, Kandivli, Mt.
Poinsur, Borivli, Orlem, Kalina, Kurla,
Marol, but all were negative in response
They also clarified that they were unaware
of any relatives in Panama.
It must be clarified that Mossack Fonseca is
a banking entity dealing in money
laundering, not American Express
Laundry! It must be understood that Shell
corporations were not the type of shells you
find at Gorai beach, nor those offshore
corporates near Manori or Uttan. Tax
havens and God’s heavens is like chalk and
cheese.
So why does this new mega-leak seemingly
only expose those in some countries’
crosshairs or expendable others? And what
does this have to do with the OECD’s plan
for a global taxation grid? How hundreds of
millions of dollars are hidden around the
globe in complex financial structures?
Perhaps Mossack Fonseca was unpopular
with some clients.
Nevertheless, this revelation was an eye
opener of how the other half has various
modes of banking. If nothing, it made very
interesting reading.

perspective)

LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDOURED THING
Desmond Aloysius FernandesAs the months breeze gracefully by and
we step into steaming May, warm and
teary memories flood my mind,
reminiscing about the happy and warmth-
filled holidays we enjoyed at our East
Indian Aunts’ homes at Old Kurla and
scenic Gorai. This was decades ago
during my youthful years. Hardly would
we arrive there when plans were
underway: “What do you like to eat for
lunch and dinner?”
The only cooking mode there was the
“Chula” with firewood. Hand breads
were baked on ‘Khapris’. Often these
breads were given crisp with our next
morning ‘fuslons’ of tea. Lunch would
comprise of fried fish, vegetables and rice
with “dried bomblos Chinchowni”.
Dinner made up of mild stew or spicy
‘khudi’. After every meal fruits were
served – green bananas cut into three
pieces or sweet limes cut into four parts.
Ice-cream made a home in pails, was
served on Sundays – nothing fanciful yet
very filling and indeed satisfying. Great
simple holidays.
With limited resources and without the
expectation of any reward, from day-
break to back-break, they would work
unceasingly. Foremost in their minds,
was the thought “the best had to be done
to please us.” All this could be described,
in just one, plain, simple word “Love”.
What is Love? No, it is not what the
hoardings proclaim nor what the movies
depict. Love is what you are willing to
sacrifice for the other. The greater the
sacrifice, the greater the love.
In 1976, a car accident tore open the head
of a 21-year- old Chicago boy named
Peter. His brain was damaged and he was
thrown into a deep coma. The Doctor told
Peter’s family and friends that he
probably would not survive. Even if he
did, he’d always be in a state of coma.
One of the persons who heard this
frightening news was Linda, the girl
Peter planned to marry.
In the sad days ahead, Linda spent all her
spare time in the hospital. Night after
night, she would sit at Peter’s bedside, pat
his cheek, rub his brow and talk to him.
All the while Peter remained in a coma
and did not respond to Linda’s loving and
caring presence. For three and a half
months, she fondly sat beside him,
speaking words of comfort and
encouragement to him, even though he
gave no sign that he heard her.
One night Linda saw Peter’s toe move. A
few nights later, she saw his eye-lashes
flutter. This was all she needed. Against
the advice of the doctors, she quit her job
and became his constant companion. She
spent hours massaging his arms and legs.
Eventually, she arranged to take him
home. All her savings she lavished on
him, hoping and praying that her efforts
would restore life to Peter’s motionless
limbs.
Then came the day when Peter spoke his
first words after the accident. It was only
a grunt. Gradually, with Linda’s help,
those grunts turned into clear words.
Finally, the day came when Peter was
able to ask Linda’s Father if he could
marry her. Linda’s Father said: “When
you can walk down the aisle, Peter, she
will be yours.” Two years later Peter
walked down the aisle of Our Lady of
Pompeii Church in Chicago, with Linda,
his bride. He had to use a walker, but he
was walking.
What a lovely story about true love and
what a beautiful commentary on the
words of Jesus “I give you a new
commandment: Love one another”. The
story of Linda and Peter emphasizes that
this kind of love has tremendous power,
a miraculous power. It has the power to
bring people back from the verge of
death to life. It has the power to give
hope to the people who are in despair. It
has the power to give joy to the sick, the
suffering and the down-trodden. By your
love you can make a DIFFERENCE.
“Love is not put in your heart to stay.
Love isn’t love until it’s given away”

Contributed by B. P. D'Mello“PAWLI!” has nothing to do with
“Thaku Bawli” – wooden doll or a
nickname for Pauline of the Indian
wrestler. In the good old days, 1943-50
the ‘pawli’ was the main coin of
exchange. It was of the value of 1/4th the
rupee, and of intrinsic value. My mother
used to give me one ‘pawli’ for a haircut.
No tips in those days. While the rich
would put a rupee in the charity box,
lesser mortals would drop a ‘pawli’. You
could buy a cake of Tata’s Hamam soap
for a ‘pawli.’ Baban, the bahaya outside
BERTIE'S Treat-Bits
St Stanislaus School gates would sell
toffee and dried boras for a ‘pawli.’
Between 1943-50 our 2.50 acre
farmhouse was in Amboli, the name
derived from ‘amba.’Or mango. My step
uncle, the late Dr Philip Braz D’Melllo,
built his ‘Lal Bungala” on this plot,
British style, in addition to his Scottish
house “Bothemby Hall’ in Edinburgh. In
the Amboli house there were plenty of
coconut, alphonso and other fruiting
trees. My mom was the Sales Manager
and the farmhouse products were sold @
one ‘pawli’each. Long live the Pawli!

Ajit Tendulkars recent toast to the brothers.
“I have had a long association with the Coutos. When Sachin was selectedin the Indian team for the first time, Marcus was the first one to inform me.He helped me a lot in my book on Sachin, with the statistics and otherdetails. And Ricky's picture is there in the book with Sachin and Kambli, sitting on the same bench in their class. Sachin had raised the toast at Rick'swedding and I think next would be Arjun raising the toast in future.” Ajitwent on to say that the Couto brothers are fascinated about cricket and thename Dale (son) is after the fast bowler. He was not sure about Dale's lovefor cricket but he is handsome and will bowl lots of maidens (girls) over!
