AROUND CAMPUS

Geocaching for Coins! Mrs. Mackin’s 6th graders all participated in a two day geocache! Everyone found hidden caches and coins and discovered how to mark a waypoint using a GPS.

First Day of Spring The PreK students celebrated the first day of spring by bringing their bears of out hibernation and eating ice cream. Earlier in the year, students made a bear that went into hibernation for the winter.

AROUND CAMPUSCommunity ServiceThe community service program has had a very busy year! As of January, St. Paul’s students have donated 14,114 service hours to the community, which means St. Paul’s has invested $310,475 in the community based on the 2010 service rate.

At St. Paul’s, PreK-12 all participate in the community service program, and each grade has a specific area of focus starting in 1st grade. This year the PreK collected items to donate to the Mobile SPCA, and the kindergarten collected books for the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

The 1st grade focused on the elderly and were engaged in service projects at Springhill Manor Nursing Home throughout the year.

The 2nd grade participated in projects dedicated to veterans and active military such as the Adopt a Platoon Soldier Support Effort and sending letters to WWII veterans.

The 3rd grade learned about the environment in projects dealing with recycling, picking up litter, and working in the organic vegetable garden.

The 4th grade’s focus was the hearing and visually impaired population, and they volunteered at the Regional School for the Deaf and Blind.

Focusing on the elderly, the 5th grade’s service day was at Little Sisters of the Poor. They also visited the residents at Springhill Manor, and they threw a Mardi Gras parade at the Via Center.

The 6th grade helped out the homeless through a Thanksgiving food drive, serving families through Family Promise of Coastal Alabama, and throwing an Easter party for McKemie Place.

Page 5: May 2012 Parent Press

The 7th grade aided the Wilmer Hall Children’s Home, Child Advocacy Center, Robbin’s Elementary School Backpack Program, and Center Point Elementary School in Birmingham through their focus on children.

The 8th Grade supported programs dedicated to mentally and physically challenged adults such as the Mulherin Home, Volunteers of America, and the Special Olympics.

Freshmen assisted families struggling medically or financially and helped the Ronald McDonald House, Angel Tree, Habitat for Humanity, and the Robbins Elementary Backpack Program as well as a cancer patient.

Sophomores participated in Coastal Cleanup, a beach cleanup, and recycling programs while learning about protecting the environment.

Juniors focused on veterans and active military by supporting WWII and Vietnam veterans, helping with the Veteran’s Day assembly, and cleaning the USS Alabama.

Seniors aided mentally and physically challenged children by volunteering at the Augusta Evans School, Little Tree Preschool, Regional School for the Deaf and Blind, and at the Special Olympics.

All grades participated in other projects outside of their focus area as well. For example, all grades were involved with the Veteran’s Day assembly and many grades participated in the Robbin’s Elementary School Backpack Program. If you would like to learn more about St. Paul’s students’ contributions to the community, please check out the Learning Through Service area under School Life on the website.

ANNUAL FUND

12

The 2011-2012 Annual Fund is 95% to Goal with 22 days to go!! For all of you who have given, THANK YOU! However, we need everyone’s help and support to achieve our goal of $375,000.

Your contributions to the Annual Fund are vital to St. Paul’s Episcopal School. Headmaster Marty Lester has stated, “Your gifts enhance the lives of the entire St. Paul’s Family. The core of our school is helping students in all areas essential to success and good citizenship. This is what makes St. Paul’s stand apart. We are St. Paul’s because of these attributes and especially because of your generosity.”

The Annual Fund provides resources that tuition alone cannot cover, some examples of which are:

• Advanced Placement Professional Development • Integrating iPad technology into our Lower School • The expansion of the Writer’s Stylus program • Professional development with Kevin Washburn for the Writer’s Stylus program for LS through the US • Extending Rosetta Stone to enhance the fluency of world language curriculum • Keyless locks in classroom doors for improved security • New programs to insure our campus will be energy efficient in the future • Campus improvements of beautification • Emphasis on our award winning Arts Program • Continued support for our 5A Athletic Programs

If you have not given to the Annual Fund, please consider doing so today. Your participation, at whatever amount is right for you, is needed and deeply appreciated! All gifts are due by May 31. Your generosity enables us to continue our mission and focus: to develop the whole child with emphasis on Academic, Athletic, Artistic and Spiritual development - the four pillars on which our school is built. Because we ask for the best in our students, we have to ask for the best in ourselves.

Our students, faculty, staff and administration thank you for your support of St. Paul’s Episcopal School Annual Fund.
