Many of us are disappointed that our
Congregational Pilgrimage to Israel had to
be postponed in light of the personal needs
of those who planned to travel with Elissa
and me through Israel. What is fascinating
is that not a single one of our pilgrims
withdrew because of safety issues. As
the 60 participants who have traveled with
Beth Am in the past will attest: Israel is one
of the safest places to be! This year's
group, along with a number of people who had told us that next
year would be better for them, have promised to "sign on" in the
Fall when we organize our next trip.
Gil Mann, an educator in Minneapolis, offers an insightful
perspective of Israel. For two thousand years – from the year 70
to 1948 – Jews were powerless and threatened. The Jewish
communities in Israel and throughout the world offered prayers
highlighting our People's dream that we will have the opportunity
to gather from the four corners of the earth and "go home."
Israeli citizens and Jews throughout the world today marvel at
the modern and powerful country Israel has become, especially in
comparison to her early decades of struggle and scarcity. Today,
new highways, buses and trains make traveling throughout the
country effortless (though Israeli drivers may be a bit
intimidating). High tech is booming, and Israel shares with the
world medical technology, computer programs, apps beyond
imagination, irrigation systems, security protocols and military
armaments in the air and on the ground. Just last month, we saw
how the Iron Dome missile defense
destroyed missiles launched from Gaza
toward civilian targets in Israel.
At the same time, Israel seems powerless
to influence the unrest in the streets in the
countries that surround her. Israelis watch
these unpredictable developments with
concern for the consequences for Israel
could be negative, even violent.
Looking at our history and our Tradition –
our Sages, our Sacred Texts, our lives in America and the history
of Israel – we can see that being powerless and powerful has
always determined the direction of Jewish life. We must remain
aware and support Israel as our People's center of spiritual and
physical focus.
Every Jew – and the non-Jewish world – should note and share
the fact that between the years 70 and 1948, no outside
government ever ruled Israel from within the Land. Jews – not
Arabs and/or Palestinians (who are really Jordanians) – have
always resided in the Land. We never left our Homeland, Israel!
Come with us to Israel next year and feel the true power of the
Jewish People!

OUR
RABBI
HOW DO WE ANSWER MISSIONARIES?
Instead of engaging those whose only focus is the Saving of
the Jewish Soul, we might simply respond, "I am happy that you
have found your spiritual home. I know who I am and where I
belong. And if my questions are not all answered (or even
answerable), I still have a solid foundation of universal and
eternal values that come out of the history of my People.
"We began as a People dedicated to transforming the world
from the way it is to the way it ought to be for all humanity, one
mitzva at a time. Every ritual we perform and every ethical act
reveals a value that strengthens both humanity and the Jewish
People. I am proud to be a Jew."
We do not go out and knock on doors. At the same time, we
do offer to open our doors to anyone who might be interested,
which is certainly different than active recruiting. We simply
open a door and invite anyone in need to walk through. That is
as close as we get.
S'FIRA: COUNTING THE OMER
For seven weeks – from the second evening of Passover until
the evening preceding Shavuot – we commemorate the measure
of barley (known as the Omer) that our ancestors brought to the
Temple in Jerusalem as a thanksgiving offering for the Spring
harvest. We assign a number to each new day during this 49-day
period, offering a b'rakha as we remind ourselves to count each
day and to make each day count.
The period of counting is called S'fira, and it creates a bridge
between Passover and Shavuot. The exodus meant that we were
physically free from slavery in Egypt; revelation at Sinai (the theme of Shavuot) enabled us to be spiritually free to study Torah and to enhance our lives with depth and meaning. The message
of S'fira is that physical freedom without spiritual freedom is
incomplete.
YOM HA-ATZMA'UT
Yom ha-Atzma'ut – the 5th day of Iyar – Israel's Independence Day, is a religious holiday for all Jews. As we celebrate this day
that stands on the same level as Hanuka and Purim, we
acknowledge a fact of history that our ancestors could only
imagine in the most ideal dreams.
Israel has shown the world that Jews are serious about survival
and will never tolerate persecution from the outside world again.
And when Israel is threatened, the entire Jewish world pulls
together, offering both physical and spiritual support for the Land
of our People.
This year, we celebrate Israel's 63rd Anniversary beginning on
Sunday evening, May 8 and continuing through Monday.

CHANGE IN OFFICE HOURS
Please note our new office hours:
● Monday, Tuesday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
● Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (6 p.m. when
Religious School is in session)
● Thursday: CLOSED
● Friday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you have an emergency when our office is closed that
requires immediate attention (e.g., death in the family),
please call 407.810.5595.
As spring arrives and our children and
grandchildren eagerly anticipate their
summer break and we plan for our long
awaited summer vacations, I wanted to
update everyone on the current status of
the expansion of our education facility.
General Contractor As I previously
announced, we have a contract with a
general contractor for the construction of
the addition. All work will comply with
applicable standards, statutes and ordinances.
Planned Unit Development (PUD) It was recently brought
to our attention that there was an issue regarding the ability of
a fire truck to turn around in our parking lot. The most cost
effective and easiest way to comply with this requirement was
to keep the Sand Lake Road access open, in addition to the
new Line Drive access. This required an amendment to the
PUD since the PUD limited each lot to one point of access. The
good news is that, as a result of the hard work of Scott
Halperin and Steve Leibowitz, we are now waiting only for a
public hearing on this issue and the approval of the Board of
County Commissioners. We expect this to have been approved
by the time you receive this Bulletin.
"Life Safety" Requirements We were notified during the
permitting process that we must bring our existing building into
compliance with current standards. We will make these
improvements with the least possible impact on our budget.
This will not affect the start of the new
construction.
Site Plan We have received final approval
on the site plan.
Building Permit We have received final
approval to build from the Building
Department.
Water Management District Approval
We have received final approval from the
St. Johns River Water Management District.
Fire Marshall At the time of this writing, this approval is the
only open item. We anticipate approval by the time you
receive this Bulletin, at which point, we will be able to begin
construction.
This summer, we will be busy at the shul as our new
construction progresses. I urge each of you to support this
expansion by donating as much as you can to our Capital
Campaign – this is essential in order to complete this project as
quickly as possible. We have had some very generous
contributions; however, we need the participation of 100% of our
members. I say with great pride that EVERY MEMBER of your
Board of Directors has contributed to this campaign.

PURIM CARNIVAL
Volunteerism is central to synagogue life at Congregation Beth
Am. Whenever there is a festival to be observed, a simha to be
celebrated, or a task to be completed, volunteers always step
forward to contribute time and effort.
The Purim Carnival has long been a tradition that is entirely
homegrown. Parents, grandparents and our youth gather to run
the games and activities for the enjoyment of our Religious
School students. The joy and excitement of Purim literally spill
out of our classrooms and onto our parking lot. It is a memorable
experience for our youngest congregants.
Who can forget: Shaving Haman? Making a Mask?
Hamantaschen Walk? Going Fishing? Or Morris Rashy’s
legendary sleight of hand playing the Shell Game?
Our most sincere thanks are due to those who volunteered at
this year’s Purim Carnival:
Make A Mask: Anna Karasik, Aleah Stein and
Rebecca Stein
Lollipop Tree: Lila Gaber and Sheila Rashy
Quarter Drop: Vali Agronovsky and
Taylor Kuperberg
Going Fishing: Nina Karlinsky, Jori Allen, Marty Stein
and Brian Cooper
Shaving Haman: Debbie Reichelson and
Sherry Williams
Football Throw: Jeff Grushka
Duck Pond: Rachel & Sam Shapiro
Hamantaschen Walk: Lori Helman
Bowling: Eva Gaber, Rich Citrenbaum, Ira Locks and
Mike Cohen
Basketball: Jacob Karlinsky and Mark Lichtenstein
Set-Up/Clean-Up: Gail Lewis, Jake Wilson, Michael
Stricker and Ed Sheplan
Pizza and Hamantaschen: Suzanne & Lane Mercer
Together, our volunteers put together a most enjoyable

CHALUTZIM — OUR YOUTH GROUP
This past month was a lot of fun for Chalutzim. At our Purim
Extravaganza, we enjoyed being silly and messy during our relay
race with jelly beans, whip cream, water balloons and more! In
the months to come, we will have more social events. I have
included a list, put together by some of our Chalutzimers, of
possible events that we might like to participate in. With that
said, it would be so wonderful to have feedback from all of the
Chalutzimers as to which events look like the most fun for
everyone! Please read through the list and let me know your
opinions or any further suggestions.

WELCOME! My)bh MykwrbMy)bh MykwrbMy)bh MykwrbMy)bh Mykwrb
We welcome the following members to the Beth Am family:
Karen Stroup
Linda & Jerrod Zlatkiss
FROM OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT
For all the years that my family has belonged to Beth Am, we
have been told that this congregation was different. We were
told that there was a different "aura" or attitude among the
members. Sure, when a minyan was needed for a member
sitting Shiva, people turned out in support. For festive occasions
like the Passover Seder, Hanuka party, Purim celebrations, etc.,
people turned out. For Yizkor services during the year, people
turned out. The Men's Club and Sisterhood had a good base
membership. But that didn't necessarily differentiate Beth Am
from the other synagogues we had belonged to over the years.
Then, an old injury and arthritis began to catch up with me. Over
an 18 month period, my right knee deteriorated to the extent that
I needed a cane to get around. Many, many members inquired
about the problem. Some had gone through similar or more
serious surgeries and gave me words of encouragement.
Finally, in mid-March, I had a total knee replacement. It was in
the week before the surgery and then the ensuing weeks that I
came to understand the Beth Am State of Mind. I got many
phone calls and e-mails prior to the surgery – all with well wishes
and people trying to put my mind at ease. Many visited me at
the hospital in Winter Park. It wasn't the closest hospital to any
of these visitors, but they came nonetheless. "Get Well" cards,
phone messages and e-mails continued to come in as the days
and weeks passed. Some were from people with whom I was
quite familiar, but others were from Beth Am members whom I
knew only in passing. There were offers of assistance in the form
of rides and companionship – none of which was disingenuous.
It is understandable that your friends comfort you and
communicate their willingness to help. It is also understandable

BOOK & MOVIE CLUB
The CBA Book & Movie Club met in April to see the film Cast a
Giant Shadow. It was based on the true story of Colonel Mickey
Marcus (played by Kirk Douglas), an American who helped lead
the newly formed Israeli army during Israel's fight for
independence in 1948. This movie was chosen because its topic
relates to the upcoming anniversary of Israel's independence. If
you haven't seen it, it is available through Netflix – it's a
worthwhile opportunity to see how Israel defended her newly-
won independence.
The book we will discuss this month is House Rules by Jodi
Picoult. "Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's
hopeless at reading social clues or expressing himself to others,
though he's brilliant in many ways. He has a special focus on one
subject… forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues
him in to crime scenes." The author's extensive research for this
book results in us learning a great deal about autism, and more
specifically about Asperger's syndrome, as well as forensic
science.
We hope to see you on May 19 at 7 p.m. at Panera Bread on
Forest City Road (across from Costco and next to Walmart).

that those with whom you infrequently connect don't
communicate. The Beth Am State of Mind, however, came
through loud and clear with contacts from those members that I
didn't know well, letting me know that they were thinking of me.
That's what sets Beth Am apart from most other synagogues.
I hope that each of you will help make all our members feel as
welcome as I have felt during my recovery. Communicate with
others – even if it's only leaving a phone message. Perpetuate
that Beth Am State of Mind.
