K-12 District Recommended Summer Reading List and Independent Reading Activities

Miami-Dade County Public Schools recognizes the importance of ensuring that students continue to strengthen reading skills and develop a passion for reading beyond instructional requirements. Experience and current research support the idea that students who are actively engaged in reading throughout the summer demonstrate improved academic performance during the following school year.

In addition, the collection of grade-appropriate independent reading activities may be used to enhance the summer reading experience for students. The activities are reflective of different learning styles and several of them focus on high order tasks.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

English for Speakers of Other Languages is a required program for students whose home language is other than English and who are classified as less than independent in English. It is a language arts program that incorporates all aspects of language arts instruction, content, and language development. The ESOL Competency-Based Curriculum for each grade level addresses the following components:

1) Reading/Literature 2) Composition 3) Vocabulary/Word Study/Language 4) Listening/Speaking/Viewing 5) Information Literacy/Study and Test Taking 6) Culture

Each student new to Miami-Dade County for whom there is a yes response to any of the questions on the Home Language Survey is assessed to determine if he or she is limited English proficient in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and/or writing.

We will be conducting the ESOL Screening Assessment for incoming Kindergarten students beginning the week of June 1, 2010 through June 4, 2010. Please call Cecilia Ortiz, Registrar to arrange an appointment for your child to be assessed. Appointments will be scheduled between the hours of 2:20 p.m. until 3:20 p.m. This evaluation will provide us with an indication of your child’s English Language Level. Please note that there is no preparation necessary for this assessment. These results will enable us to provide our students with the appropriate language services.

Extended Foreign Language (EFL)

If you are interested in having your child participate in

the EFL program at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center,

letters of interest are available in the Main Office of Dr.

Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center. Once the letter of interest

is submitted, your child will be placed on a waiting list

for the program. All letters of interest are due by

August 6, 2010.

Parents of kindergarten children will be notified of their

child’s acceptance into the EFL Program during the

kindergarten orientation meeting in August. Parents of

children in grades one through seven will be notified

throughout the school year once space becomes

available.

Bullying and Harassment

Bullying means systematically and chronically, inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or school employees. It is further defined as a pattern of unwanted and repeated written, verbal, or physical behavior, including any threatening, insulting, dehumanizing gesture by an adult or student, that is severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment; cause discomfort or humiliations; or unreasonably interfere with the individual’s school performance or participation that includes a noted power differential. Bullying may involve, but is not limited to: 1. Teasing 2. Social exclusion 3. Threats 4. Intimidation 5. Stalking 6. Physical violence 7. Theft 8. Sexual, religious, or racial harassment 9. Public humiliation 10. Destruction of Property 11. Cyber stalking 12. Cyber-bullying Harassment means any threatening, insulting or dehumanizing gesture, use of data or computer software, or written, verbal or physical conduct directed against a student or school employee that: 1. Places a student or school employee in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or damage to his or her property. 2. Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities, or benefits. 3. Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of a school. Cyber stalking is defined in s. 784.048(1)(d), F.S., means to engage in a course of conduct to communicate, or to cause to be communicated, words, images, or language by or through the use of electronic mail or electronic communication, directed at a specific person, causing substantial emotional distress to that person and serving no legitimate purpose. Cyber bullying is defined as the willful and repeated harassment and intimidation of an individual through the use of electronic mail or electronic communication with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person.

By law, all students who are entering, attending, or transferring to a public school in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade must have a completed Florida Certification of Immunization form DH680, Part A, B, or C, or a religious exemption form-DH681. An electronically signed copy of a completed DH680 is acceptable.

Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, students entering, attending or transferring to the following grades for the first time (Pre-K, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th 7th, 8th, and 9th grades) in a Florida school will be required to have one dose of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine.

Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, students entering, attending or transferring to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade will be required to have two doses of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine.

The varicella vaccine is not required if the student has documented history confirming that he/she has previously been infected with varicella. Please note, students that have been retained in the 9th grade must obtain one dose of the varicella vaccine or show documented history of a previous varicella infection. In addition, students that have been retained in 2nd grade must obtain two doses of the varicella vaccine or show documented history of a previous varicella infection.

Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, students entering, attending, transferring, or being retained in the 7th grade will be required to be inoculated with the Tetanus and Diphtheria toxoids and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. The Tdap can be administered to students 10 years of age and above if prior Td booster was given at least 2 years ago. Students who received a dose of TD vaccine 2 to 5 years prior to entering 7th grade should be given a Temporary Medical Exemption and immunized at the appropriate time.

All children aged 0-24 months are required to have one dose of the pneumococcal vaccine. Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) vaccination is required for public/private preschool from

two months through 59 months of age. The number of doses required for Hib vaccination varies, depending on the child’s age and type of vaccine received.

Two valid doses of measles vaccination (MMR) are required for students enrolling in/attending Kindergarten through the 12th grades.

The Hepatitis B (Hep-B) vaccine series is required for students enrolling in/attending pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grades.

In accordance with the Florida Plan for School Health Services, all pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students must submit documentation verifying that a Students’ Health Examination was performed within the 12 month period preceding initial entry into a Florida school. A completed Student Health Examination (DH or HRS-H Form 3040) form, including proof of a Tuberculosis Clinical Screening and appropriate follow up if necessary, should be completed and signed by a licensed practicing health care provider, and presented to the school during initial registration.

Stand Up for Kids Art Contest Winners

We are very proud to announce that Mariana Payeras and Antwann Anderson, 6th grade students from Ms. Cambeyro’s Art Class won the Stand Up for Kids Contest. The two DRE winners will attend an awards ceremony on May 25th and May 26th in the Wynwood Design District. Every contestant will be given a certificate and the chance to see their work in a professional gallery. We wish them the best on their

First Grade

Second Grade

The month of April was very exciting for our students. Our students learned about “Earth Day” and ways to take care of the environment. Throughout the month of April, teachers also introduced students to various activities that facilitated our students' understanding in Science, Math and Social Science. In Science, they learned the effects of force, push and pull. In the area of Mathematics, they learned how to read the temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius. In addition, they had an introduction to time, where they learned the calendar, days of the week, and the clock. In Social Science, they learned the importance of being a good citizen and the different types of community helpers.

Wow! It is hard to believe the year is almost over. Our first graders have developed into very good readers and have improved their writing skills. In mathematics, we will continue to as well as introduce new concepts. We look forward to officially becoming second graders

very soon.

The second grade students have been showered with knowledge during the month of April. They have been working on homophones and checking their reading comprehension. They are learning their multiplication tables as well as going back in time to discuss dinosaurs and their origins. Our students are blossoming into third graders more and more each day. April was full of exciting and educational activities for all our second grade students. We look forward to more fun and quality activities in the month of May as we begin to wrap up for the end of the school year. We will be working on models of the Solar System for the month of

May.

The month of April was very exciting in 3rd Grade! After all the hard work preparing for the FCAT, it was great to take some well deserved time off to relax during Spring Recess. Many students went on family vacations and brought back tons of pictures and memories to share. During this month, students focused on their writing skills, reading chapter books, exploring the properties of multiplication and the Solar System. The Science teachers are eager to see all the neat planet projects the students worked on. The third grade team is currently planning for a couple of great field trips for the students to enjoy during the month of May. As the school begins to close, we are looking forward to making as many memories as we can to take with us to 4th Grade!

The month of April was an exciting one. We came back from Spring Recess all ready for fifth grade! We’ve had so much to do. Learning fifth grade concepts has been a priority so that our future fifth graders are ready for the next school year. We’ve had so many fun activities going on. April 22nd was “Take Your Son/Daughter To Work Day” and so many of our students had the opportunity to learn what their parents do on a daily basis. Friday, April 23rd, fourth grade celebrated Earth Day. We learned about our planet and what things we could do to help our Earth. We also created some crafts made of recycled products. We had fun and gained some insight to the importance of doing our part to help our planet. We attended two amazing field trips in April. On the 26th we saw Disney Oceans, an amazing movie that gave us an opportunity to witness the miracles and mysteries of our deep dark oceans. Then, on the 28th we learned all about Florida’s weather at the Sun Life Stadium. We learned about hurricanes and about our wacky temperatures. Then, the Florida Marlins played against the San Diego Padres. What a day, WHAT A MONTH! As we near the ending of another fantastic school year at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center we continue to learn, grow and mature.

During the month of May the fifth graders will be starting the Theme: One Land, Many Trails. This theme includes stories that take students back to the early days of American history. In mathematics, they will be focusing on numbers and operations through integers. They will compare and order integers and use them to solve real world problems. In science, the students will be covering the topic of Human Growth and Development. Throughout the month, they will work on preparations for their promotional ceremony that is coming up in the month of June.

Sixth Grade

Mr. Coghlan's Art class will be concluding their drawings using traditional freehand drawing techniques, ruled line drawings and Google Sketch-Up application drawings. Students will then present their three works collectively to the class in order to compare and contrast how the differing mediums and techniques produce different visual effects in their artwork. Students will also have the opportunity to draw in perspective in an outdoor setting using portions of the building at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center as subject matter. Ms. Eva’s 6th grade classes will be looking at the Human Body Systems. The students will be working in groups presenting a specific system assigned. They will be integrating their computer skills and presenting power point presentations that reflect the systems; respiratory, digestive, nervous, circulatory, immune, and skeletal. The science classes will be enhanced by the use of Gizmos and lab observations so that the students are able to get a better understanding of these systems and their functions. We will conclude the month by exploring different bacteria and viruses, how they grow, and the effect they have on living organisms. Finally, we will end the year learning about social and emotional growth. Let’s go 6th grade scientists, we have one month left! Mr. Black’s students are working on Unit 8 “Integrated Applications”. Students are creating a restaurant advertisement using Microsoft Word 2007. Students have to write the text for their advertisement, include a description of the restaurant, a catchy slogan, and its hours and location. Also, students have to design an I-Pad Web Page. The Web Page will promote the new Apple I-Pad. Students will use the Internet to find information about the I-Pad. They will use Microsoft Word 2007 to create an advertisement about the I-Pad. In addition, they will write and format text to emphasize the interesting features of the I-Pad. Once they have completed their advertisement, they will save and view the ad as a Web Page. Mrs. Lopez Math classes will take the Mathematics Post- Interim Assessment Test to demonstrate they have mastered all the skills taught during the 2009-2010 school year. The students will participate in a variety of competitions among peers to motivate them, as well as to show both content knowledge and social skills. In addition, they will be learning more Algebra concepts they will encounter when they get to the 7th grade. Ms. Figueredo’s Language Arts students finished and LOVED the book The Giver!! We are excited to have begun Lost and anxious to see how it ends. Immersing ourselves in the world of books has been a great adventure this year. Mr. Reyes and the DRE Orchestra are rehearsing a new repertoire that will be played at the end of the school year celebration. Mr. Rodriguez’s World Geography students will be focusing on their country reports. Each student has been assigned one of the many countries around the world. Also, they will continue studying geography and the people of Europe. The next four chapters covered will detail the

landforms, climate, economy, history, government and lifestyle found in these countries.

Mr. Bustillo’s Science classes will discuss the theory of evolution and how it has affected organisms in the micro and macro scales. We will also begin to review our second semester’s curriculum in preparation for our final exams. During the month of May, Mr. Bustillo’s classes will be learning about Life Science. We will be discussing what makes species different, what is necessary for their survival and how they function. We will also be looking at the different systems of the body, which complete tasks that are necessary for everyday life. Ms. Cambeyro’s Art classes will be studying pre-Colombian American art, specifically the Molas from Kuna Indians, to see why they were and still are gifted weavers. Students will focus in the Mola quilts made by the Kuna Indian women. The Kunas are one of the indigenous groups of Panama. They call their land Kuna Yala. It is a narrow strip of land on the Northern coast of Panama along the Caribbean Sea. Students will work in the design of a motif (shape that is repeated over and over in a visual rhythm) to create a pattern for a quilt or fabric design. They will design the motif using elements and/or principles of art found in the Mola woven panels, most likely organic shapes. The result will be a painting quilt. Mr. Caserta’s ESOL Reading and Language Arts students will take the CELLA (Comprehensive English Language Learners Assessment) during the beginning part of May. This test determines the ESOL students’ level of English proficiency. It is based on four different aspects of the learning of the language: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Ms. Davis' Language Arts classes will be analyzing different pieces of literature, with special emphasis on theme and persuasion in fiction and nonfiction. Additionally, the students will review what they have learned in writing, composing both expository and persuasive essays. Finally, the students will complete the novels The Iceberg Hermit and Schooled. Ms. Davis' Reading classes will complete their reading series, giving special attention to main idea, inference, and vocabulary, using each skill to answer short and extended response questions. In addition, the students will further practice these skills by solving mini-mysteries. Finally, the students will complete the novels Locomotion and Bernie Magruder and the Disappearing Bodies. Mr. Deliz’s Science students are working on the last subject of the year, Life Sciences. They are engaged in the investigating the differences and similarities of living things and in doing so, identifying components of traditional classification systems. Students continue their studies of living things by using their previously gained knowledge and applying it to understand how to conserve life and the environment. Ms. Graham’s Civics’ classes , this is the final reminder for the completion of the 10 hours towards the Community Service Project, which will be due on Thursday, May 6, 2010 for periods 1, 3, and 5 and on Friday, May 7, 2010 for periods 2, 4, and 6. We have just completed our study of The President and the Executive Branch, and will be ending this school year with an understanding of The Judicial Branch of Government. We will then be reviewing for our final exams, which will begin at the end of this month. Ms. Larmond’s Physical Education/Literacy students are studying family planning and marriage, diseases and AIDs education. Physical education: Students will be learning and practicing basketball and flag football. Mr. Mateu’s Math Sixth grade students will continue to cover integers, adding integers, subtracting integers, multiplying integers, dividing integers, and the coordinate plane in preparation for the final exam. Seventh grade students will continue to cover estimating with fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers, and solving equations in preparation for the final exam. Ms. Shepard’s Language Arts students will read and analyze the class novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck, and they will complete the grammar for writing workbook by studying apostrophes, punctuating titles, and avoiding double negatives. Ms. Shepard’s Creative Writing students will be completing their two major works using the elements of the short story: a theme based story and a children’s book. Students will begin to prepare their second semester portfolio of poetry and narrative writing for their final exam.
