Dear Member,You know, dear member, how proud we are o our national, Emmy award winning,

Well, we now have reasons to be even prouder. You will recall that Natural Heroes, produced or KRCB by our Val Lanes, is ananthology series o independent lms celebrating individuals and organizations makinga dierence in their community. One other interesting actoidthere are twice as many younger olks (18 - 49) viewingthan olks over 50. Thatis very unusual or a PBS audience so we are proud o developing thataudience as well.

When we launched Natural Heroesin 2004, there was no otherregular television series dedicated to environmental issues. Not oncommercial or noncommercial stations. KRCB was, and largelystill is, unique in this area. Your support is what makes compel-

A Moment In TimeA Moment in Time, a new lm by Oscar-winner Ruby Yang,

is about the experience o the Chinese in America through the

lms they loved. It harkens back to a time when six movie the-aters in San Franciscos Chinatown crystallized the memories, the belies, the sorrows and aspirations o Chinese immigrantamilies. The principal speakers grew up here: Irene Dea Col-lier, Jimmie Lee, Chuck Gee, Cecilia Wong, Amy Chung,Norman Fong. As children they associated Chinese movies(and the Chinese language) with their parents alien, backward

world. Chinese mothers loved Cantonese Opera lms in whichtyrannical parents wrench young lovers apart. For them, movies

were a rare break in an endless workweek. Chinese movies alsotranslated national disastersWorld War II, or exampleintopersonal dramas o separation and loss. For Chinese immi-grants they were true to lie, unlike the sunny amily shows on

American TV. The immigrants American kids eventually ound their own reasons to appreci-ate Chinese lm. Partly in sel deensebecause they were seen as Chinesethe childrendeveloped a pride in Chinese things.

The heartbeat oA Moment in Timeis a series o clips rom lms that were hits in China-town: Hollywood Westerns, lms rom revolutionary mainland China, 1950s bobbysoxer

lms rom Hong Kong, 1960s martial arts lms.Chinese movies have broken into mainstream culture. Hong Kong directors like John Wooand Wong Kar Wai, movie stars like Chow Yun Fat and Jackie Chan are known around the

world.A Moment in Timerecalls the period when Chinese movie theaters marked a dividingline between the generations, but were also a school where American kids came to appreciatetheir Chinese roots.

Richard Wol breaks down the root causes o todays economic crisis, showing how it wasdecades in the making and in act refects seismic ailures within the structures o American-style capitalism itsel.

Wol traces the source o the economic crisis to the 1970s, when wages began to stagnateand American workers were orced into a dysunctional spiral o borrowing and debt thatultimately exploded in the mortgage meltdown. By placing the crisis within this largerhistorical and systemic rame, Wol argues convincingly that the proposed governmentbailouts, stimulus packages, and calls or increased market regulation will not be enough toaddress the real causes o the crisis, in the end suggesting that ar more undamental change

will be necessary to avoid uture catastrophes. Richly illustrated with graphics and charts, this is a superb introduction that allows ordinary citizens to comprehend, and react to, theunraveling crisis. Tuesday, May 11 at 9 pm

via the British Broadcasting Corporation. This meant the state-run channels were the only outlets or young musicians, wherethey were relegated to a handul o popular but tightly controlledprograms. As the do-it-yoursel pop explosion that launched theBeatles and their many contemporaries blossomed into the psy-chedelic era, a new kind o radio voice began to make itsel heard.

Broadcasting rom ships oshore, outside Englands territorial wa-ters, these pirate stations were an immediate sensation, beamingpreviously unheard rock, soul, olk and blues records to an eager audience. May 8 In the Name of Securityby Peter Goodchild with Johnde Lancie, William Frankather, Ella Joyce, Richard Hoyt Miller,David Hyde Pierce, Alan Wilder

At the height o the cold War, American democracy was challengedby the anti-Communist atmosphere o the McCarthy era. In The Name of Securityre-openstwo amous spy cases that rocked America between 1948 and 1954: the trials o Alger Hissand the trial o Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, with dramatic re-enactments based on originaltrial transcripts, archival material, new evidence, the latest assessments o American historiansand scientists, and the commentaries o relatives and riends o the accused.

May 15 Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde by Moiss Kauman withDakin Matthews, Ian Ogilvy, Simon Templeman, John Vickery, Douglas Weston, Matthew

    Wol

In three short months, Oscar Wilde, the most celebrated playwright and wit o VictorianEngland, was toppled rom the apex o British society into humiliation and ruin. Drawingrom trial documents, newspaper accounts, and writings o the key players, Kauman ignitesan incendiary mix o sex and censorship, with a cast o characters ranging rom GeorgeBernard Shaw to Queen Victoria hersel.

May 22 An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde with Rosalind Ayres (pictured), JacquelineBisset, Paul Gutrecht, Martin Jarvis, Alred Molina, YeardleySmith

A tender love story, a serpentine villainess, a glittering settingin London society and a shower o Wildean witticisms are only aew o the reasons this play has enjoyed hugely successul reviv-als in London and New York. This 1895 drama also seems eerilyprescient, as it explores the plight o a promising young politi-cian, desperate to hide a secret in his past. With empathy and

wit, Wilde explores the pitalls o holding public gures to higherstandards than the rest o us.

May 29 Ruby McCollum by Ron Milner, Steve Albrezzi, and William Bradord Huie,

Based on a true case in South Florida in 1952, thissuspenseul drama has powerul implications to this day, posing questions o airness and

justice in a small Southern town. Saturdays at 6 pm and repeats at midnight
