Experience “living military histo-ry” with Joint Base Lewis-McChord at Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 15 at Cowan and Memorial stadiums. With plenty of exhibits, food and free fun and entertainment for people of all ages, you don’t want to miss the festivities beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until 6 p.m.
The origin of Armed Forces DayArmed Forces Day is celebrated
annually on the third Saturday of May to honor the U.S. Armed Forces. The formation of the holiday was an effort supported by President Harry S. Truman and was announced by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson on Aug. 31, 1949. The holiday serves
as an educational program of sorts for the civilian community to expand the public’s understanding of the military. Everyone in the Puget Sound com-munity is invited to attend the Joint Base Lewis-McChord celebration.
Get active – walk or mud runAt 8 a.m. avid walkers may register
and begin the Volksmarch at Carey Theater, next to Cowan Stadium (for details, turn to page 17. Get downright dirty at the Down & Dirty Mud Run at 9 a.m. behind Soldiers Field House.
Travel back in time There will be both historical and
modern-day military displays for children and adults alike to explore, as well as demonstrations and mock battles throughout the day.
“Living military history groups range from Renaissance swordmak-ers to Vietnam- and Desert Storm-era reenactors,” said Kate Laverents, MWR Special Events director.
Visit a Revolutionary War-era encampment and encounter frontier cavalry, Civil War units, WWI re-enactors with JBLM roots and more. The Philippine Scouts represent the Spanish-American era and WWI, and the Buffalo Soldiers comprised the first permanent African American regiments. Also joining the festivities are Friends of Kilroy, the 2nd Con-necticut Regiment of Militia Colonial Reenactors and the Puget Sound Military Vehicle Collectors Club. Home gymIn this third and final installment of
the Home Gym Series, try three challeng-ing exercises guaranteed to spice up your workout. All exercises can be viewed on YouTube – search for UDrich1985.
You can do these exercises at home with minimal equipment. Give them a try to help strengthen and tone your body and reduce your risk of injury.
Please note, you should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen. Fitness assessments can be completed at the gym with a certified fitness trainer. Fitness trainers – just one of the free services available at some on-post gyms – are also available to monitor your progress and keep you motivated.
Fitness specialist Rich Rosenblum is certified with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and works at Wilson Sports and Fitness Center at JBLM-Lewis North. For more infor-mation or to schedule a session with a certified fitness trainer, call 253-966-7660.
This is a challenging abdominal exercise due to its isometric position (muscular contraction is held), and it is very fatiguing on your body.
Step one: Have a partner stand in front of you, with your knees between their legs. Get set in a “lock up” position where your elbows touch the top of your knees. Contract your abdominal muscles.
Step two: Have your partner slowly rock you back and forth while keep-ing your abdominals contracted with your elbows staying in contact with your knees.
Try three sets of four to 10 repetitions.
Get downright muddyThe Down & Dirty Mud Run is Sat-
urday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at Soldiers Field House at JBLM-Lewis Main. Dress as your favorite super hero to be eligible for a “Down & Dirty” prize. The route is filled with hills, obstacles, and of course, plenty of mud and water. Hose off at the finish line, and check out the Armed Forces Day festivities at Cowan and Me-morial stadiums.
The early registration deadline is Wednesday, May 5, and entry fees are $5 for active duty military, retirees and their fam-ily members; $10 for DoD employees; and $20 for civilians. Register after Wednesday, May 5, and add $10. Registration closes

Most exercises done on one leg require more balance, core stability and coordination than work done on two legs. This exercise challenges these components and improves upon weak points in traditional squatting. Use a bench or chair that is above 90 degrees.
Step one: On one leg, slowly lower yourself onto the bench, using a mir-ror to monitor form. be sure your knees are not going past your toes.
Step two: Stand up. Too challenging? Stand up with both legs. As you mas-ter the exercise, lower the bench. Advanced move: Don’t use a bench.
Try two to three sets of five to eight repetitions on each leg.
This interesting exercise improves pulling strength and helps tone biceps and upper back. All it requires is a towel and a pole.
Step one: Loop a long towel around a sturdy pole, holding both ends. You can make a knot to give you a better grip. Lower yourself into a squat. The deeper the squat, the more challenging the exercise.
Step two: Pull yourself forward, keeping your heels on the ground. Finish the exercise by pushing to bring yourself back to the starting position.
Try two to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions.

Monitor your credit with help from Financial Readiness
The information on your credit report impacts the rates you pay on loans and credit cards and may cause you to lose your security clearance if it shows you are far behind in your debts. Read your credit reports at least once per year to be sure that the information in each report is correct. FRP will:• Print all three credit reports free of charge (if you have not accessed them in the last 365 days).
• Walk you through each report to be sure all of the information on your report is correct.
• Write letters to your creditors in the event any information on your credit reports is incorrect.
• Follow up with you once you begin toreceive responses from your creditors.
To make a credit-monitoring ap-pointment or sign up for classes, call 253-967-7166. To see all classes of-fered in May, visit the MWR calendar at JBLMMWR.com.

Quick, easy customer feedback
The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Interactive Customer Evaluation site appreciates your compliments, and every concern will be resolved as quickly as possible.
When you hear a friend mention they would like to compliment some-one or they had an issue at an office or activity, tell them about ICE. It takes just a couple of minutes to submit your comment, which goes straight to the manager for review and action.
Here’s some of what you had to say this month.
Child Development Center “We should continue to be grateful for the wonderful service that McChord Air Force child care services provide. I feel the pride in service from the staff and supervi-sors each time I use the facility.”
Education Center “The Education Book Store is doing a fantastic job. Each time I go in, I am greeted in a warm professional way, and my education needs are met. Continue the amazing service!”
Fitness Center “The staff is very friendly and helpful. They take care of the facility, and it shows.”
Civilian Personnel Office “Linda was very responsive and helpful with a request for a retention register. This is the third time she has assisted me with this type of request, and each time she has provided exceptional customer service.”
Madigan Café/Latin Sensations “This is the best place to eat. There are no comparisons. I would like to cite the front register and the cook for their qual-ity service.”
“Stacey was very helpful and very cheer-ful and pleasant. Staff is very professional. I would like to cite Stacey for quality service.”
Special Events Office “Having Kids’ Fest at JBLM-Lewis North was a great idea as people didn’t have to
cross the road. Having the bounce house in the tent out of the rain was a good idea. It was a good use of space inside the American Lake Community Center with the excep-tion of it was a little hard to move around if someone had strollers. It was fun, and I think the kids really enjoyed having this event.”
The Interactive Customer Evaluation is your way to have your voice heard. JBLM wants to know what you think about your latest visit to a facility or special event.
Were you satisfied with the service?
Did it meet your needs?
Whether you had a great experience you want to share or have a suggestion to pass along, visit https://ice.disa.mil. Your voice
will be heard – your comments are sent straight to managers and the command group. ICE is also accessible through Army OneStop kiosks, which are located across JBLM-Lewis. The more feedback you provide, the better JBLM facilities and staff can serve you.
