Mauro Ceolin                                                                              Rgb – Tetris,  2002

”Italians Do It Better!!” curated by D Quaranta and M Bittanti /group show

54th Venice Art Biennale – collateral events, Sala dei Lanieri_Venezia, Italy, june-november 2011

Mauro Ceolin started to focus on game culture in 2002, portraying the game designers who made the history of videogames: faces and names unknown to most people, like Will Wright or Shigeru Miyamoto, that Ceolin celebrates as culture heroes. This first work was followed by the memorable series SolidLandscapes (2005 – 2011), in which he painted the landscapes where he lived inside the screen as if they were real. CARTRIDGEdream (2005), presented in the exhibition, is a small masterpiece of recycling scrap: old game cartridges, modeling components, and spam emails are reassembled to spawn a new cultural artifact.

CRIDA STUDIESAcousmatic soundscapeA concert in two movements for your MP3 player

Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de PalmaApril, 2012

Es Baluard will host on April 12 at 20 hours the project by artist Mauro Ceolin CRIDA Studies. Acousmatic soundscape CNSA 0102, a concert for MP3 in two movements. This concert is the result of the research carried out by Ceolin within his project contemporaryNaturalism, about how nature is represented in our consumer society.

CRIDA Studies: acousmatic soundscape CNSA 0102, concerto in two movements for MP3 summarizes, in a visual format, the research conducted by Mauro Ceolin on the relationship between astronomy and the scientific imagination in science fiction movies. The result of this study (CNSA 0102) produces a soundscape and visual impressions made of parts of elements copied, isolated and extracted from various video sharing websites (eg YouTube) and mounted with a free software.

Triennale di Milano | Triennale Bovisa |Triennale VisionLab07 October - 27 October 11Location: Triennale Bovisa

Triennale VisionLab, the laboratory of Triennale di Milano laboratories, which promotes creative cooperation between young artists and scientists, presents VIVENDI ContemporaryNaturalism – From Lassie to Pokémon a research-Work by Mauro Ceolin for Laboflabs 2011.

....the project will make it possible to analyse the artistic proposition of the work by participating with the artist in the Art and Science Crossing laboratory, with its cross-fertilisation of codes and canons. The first results of the investigations carried out by Ceolin since 2006 on the trans-media characters, icons, and objects of the international intra-generational world of the imagination will be presented. An explorer of landscapes, places, and electric/electronic/computer/digital universes, Mauro Ceolin, a latter-day Darwin, goes so far as to trace out the new frontiers of the concept of Nature. From it, he attempts to bring out and express an innovative range of meaning for a global society that is increasingly pervaded by virtual and immaterial dimensions.

The exhibition, which also includes docu-videos (matteo scanni), sound-design(asmagita darvinci) and theatre performances (fattoria vittadini)....

In his Landscape Series, Mauro Ceolin explores the different aspects of landscape in our globalized, capitalist, contamined, digital era. Drawing with a digital pen and tablet, he recreates the images he collects from different sources: landscapes from commercial videogames, the buildings of the main companies in the market of technology and the many natural disasters caused by man. His work involves an exploration of the digital with a very traditional, manual process.

Mauro Ceolin (Milano, 1963) has exhibited his work in many art centers and galleries in Italy and worldwide, as well as in the art fairs Artissima, MiArt, Flash Art and FIAC, and severla digital art festivals. Johan&Levi has recently published a book about his work.

Mauro Ceolin : Evolutionary (dis)order

Memezoology fits within the research project contemporaryNaturalism, active since 2006 with the goal of certifying the existence of a "biology of the imaginary collective" and the spread of memes in mainstream media. With an analytical eye, Ceolin chooses cases that have become "viral" as a result of countless versions created from a common template. Our imagination expands thanks to the emergence of new (even synthetic) life forms. Another evolutionary breakthrough is looming. For Homo Digitalis it is not difficult to be surrounded by wildlife created by film, television or video games and, likewise, it easily contributes to a meme’s survival.Claudio Musso

Inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Mauro Ceolin dedicates this series to the investigation of the representation of fluids. But he does it, as is habitual in his work, through the products of popular culture. In this case, the Manga and the Anime are the source from which he extracts all kinds of images of fluids, whether water, gases, or pure energy. Ceolin extracts these forms from their context, depriving them of their figurative character to become beautiful abstract compositions in which, nevertheless, subsist a subtle identification with the comic’s own language and that of Japanese animation. The artist chooses for this work an effective combination of manual digital processes, that go from the vectorial drawing to the collage and the mural painting. Mauro Ceolin has created two large pieces specifically for this exposition, thanks to a stay at the workshops of the CCA.

The video game is not only an entertainment, but also a form of communication. Author uses it asa language and as a media to communicate and to describe the reality. RGBwebroids2 is not a surrealistic videogame. It describes a real web-social scenery. Ceolin describes this Internet war with his favourite language: the videogame. This media allows the artist to describe facts, real situations with a brief, fast and ironic language which everybody can understand.

Mauro Ceolin is a Milanese artist. In the last three years, he has been experimenting netart in his RGBProject.  Structured like a work in progress, his project  includes some acrylic paintings, a series of vectorial drawings and Flash animations.  In Siracusa, Ceolin will exhibit RGB Tetris, an artistic version of the famous Tetris videogame, and, in absolute preview, RGB Atari. In the first one, instead of the usual geometrical figures, the player must drive one into the other free falling brands of well-known companies.  The big Mc Donald's "M", Nike's "moustache" and many other famous logos compose a colorful and ironic mosaic,  an eccentric Pop celebration of  branding.  RGB Atari uses the shape of more classic break-wall in order to describe the present situation of videogame industry overcoming movie industry.

Videogame Landscapes and Cities in the Works of Five International Artists, a group show featuring works by some of the most celebrated artists working with digital games: Cory Arcangel, Mauro Ceolin, Jon Haddock, Eddo Stern, and Carlo Zanni.

Mauro Ceolin lives and works in Milan, where he was born in 1963. One of the leading international game artists, Ceolin depicts himself as a painter, even when he creates banners, animations or videogames such as GOOGLEBattle.03 (2004), a paintgame on Google's epic struggle against ali other search engines. Using a revisited painting technique, he creates vectorial images using an optical pen and a palette of fiat colors; the images can then be reproduced in various sizes and techniques, from acrylic painting to photographic printing. The subjects of this never-ending work are found images, fragments of the pop culture but, above ali, icons of the videogaming culture, from landscapes to cosplayers, from game designers to 8-bit musicians. His works have been on show in various exhibitions, among which the milestone event "Bang the Machine" (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco 2004)

……Mauro’s attitude blew past the reverent, passive attitude that too often surrounds new media art and set a new starting point, making a hybrid of old and new techniques. It appeared crystal-clear to me the very moment I first stared into one of his Solid Landscapes, attracted again by the same mysterious force that drew me closer to my Commodore 64 screen when I was a kid. This time, every single pixel seemed in the right place to me. It was nice to feel that rapture again, staring at the green bushes and quaint streams of some level of Zelda.

Google Battle From the 90s, Newpop Artists begin to analyse pop culture in a different way from Pop artist of the 60s as Warhol or Lichtenstein. They reject idea that pop culture is a system of stars and icons and study it as a language, a media among others.Mauro Ceolin concentrates his attemption on videogame’s universe. For him videogame is not only an entertainment, but a form of communication. But unlike other neopop artists Ceolin doesn’t only analyse videogame as language, he uses it as language, as media to speak and describe the reality. His last artwork is Google Battle, a modified videogame inspired to an ancient spaceship battle platform. In his version Ceolin substitutes spaceship for search engines logos, transforming the ancient space battle in a contemporary war for internet supremacy. The player is Google and he has to defend himself from other search engines as Lycos, Yahoo, Altavista, etc.Google Battle is not a surrealistic videogame, it describes a real economic scenery. Search engines company are forming an alliance to stop Google’s success and supremacy and Ceolin tells us this internet war with his favorite language, videogame. This media allows the artist to describe facts, real situations with a brief, fast and ironic language which everybody can undestand. (Pierluigi Casolari 2004)

"Ceolin presents us the last evolution of a project where languages formally different converge. From that fertile connexion drifts the creation of further new codes. This sculpture, created basically by cardboard boxes, paints icons on one of its side. An old Compaq laptop is reinvented, painted on white, and used as the canvas of a post-digital painter. The three DVD readers, one on its time, become surface and contemporarily material, inside a sculpture where different linguistic instruments participate to create new specifications and contaminations. None of the technical means involved in this process is prevalent respect to the others."

"Animali Trans-mediali", approfondimenti e concetti base.

(maggio – luglio 2013). L’evento ha visto la prima presentazione pubblica del Great Wall of Memes, un progetto in corso poi riproposto in forma installativa a Lubiana e, più di recente, nella mostra The Darknet. From Memes to Onionland alla Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen.
