Gun Violence in AmericaOliver Rosenau

The United States has endured numerous hardships in the last year. This includes the pandemic, a financial crisis, and a stress-inducing election. Throughout all of the chaos violence in the country has increased, and it does not seem to be receiving a lot of attention or news coverage.

In March of 2021 alone, over 20 mass shootings occurred. This included an attack in an Atlanta-area spa that killed 8 people and a shooting in a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado that took 10 lives. The controversy over gun control has been volatile over the last couple of years and only seems to increase through every act of violence in this country. However, with the new Democrat-run House, the nation may see more gun control legislation passed. On March 11, 2021, the House of Representatives voted to pass a pair of bills that strengthen background checks on people trying to buy guns.

Suez Canal BlockageSophie Gros

The Suez Canal is a man-made waterway in Egypt that is essential to world trade and commerce. On March 23, the unthinkable happened: a massive ship, the Ever Given, blocked the waterway and caused an uproar of uncertainty in the global trade industry. Around 13% of the world’s traded goods pass through this canal, so any halt in commerce could make a sizeable impact on the economy. For example, thousands of Egyptians rely on it as a source of income due to its location.

The way in which the vessel was jammed into the canal is disputed, with some blaming a technical error and others holding high winds and sandstorms accountable. It is still unknown

glands. Instead, they roll in mud to cool off. ● In 1997, a lovely cat named Stubbs became mayor of a small town in Alaska. He stayed the mayor for twenty years until his death in 2017.

The two bills were passed in order to counteract flaws that were seen in previous gun laws. This includes the “Charleston loophole”, which only allowed the F.B.I. three days to conduct a background search for someone trying to purchase a firearm. If the time limit is exceeded, the purchase is allowed to be made without any further issues. This loophole is partially responsible for the horrific massacre that occurred at a historic Black church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015 by the white supremacist, Dylan Roof. The second bill passed required people buying guns from private sellers online or at gun shows to have background checks before the sale is completed.

Regardless of political affiliation or personal ideals on gun control, it is obvious that some change must occur in America. Innocent people are dying at an alarming rate, and mass shooting numbers are skyrocketing. Something must be done.

exactly how the ship was lodged in the canal, but its removal is a different story. The Ever Given was unrelenting; it took 6 days to remove the ship from the Suez Canal. The efforts of 14 tugboats proved effective, as they used pulling maneuvers and the advantage of a high tide to dislodge the vessel. The 400-meter megaship was officially removed from the canal on March 29, allowing the once delayed world trade to continue.

Now that the Ever Given has been removed from the Suez Canal, the fallout from the obstruction can be observed. Authorities will be on the lookout for major trade congestion and try to prevent anything similar to the blockade from happening again. The Ever Given will also receive a full inspection at Great Bitter Lake, a saltwater lake in Egypt, to see what actually caused this problem in the first place.

Madisonville Toll Bridge Proposal Matthew Kinler

It is a frustration foreign to none. You have a dentist appointment, soccer practice, or family party to attend. Your presence is expected elsewhere, but your car crawls forward every few minutes only to be halted again by the tail end of the car in front of you whose bumper stickers you have nearly memorized over the past twenty minutes of plodding movement. The road ahead is engrossed by the procession of cars that seem to stretch on forever into the horizon, brake lights becoming miniscule red dots in the distance. Traffic is considered universally as a troublesome and inconvenient pitfall of modern day life. Those countless minutes spent waiting on the freeway can add up. Sitting in traffic wastes both time and gas, causing Americans to lose a total of 160 billion dollars per year. That is 960 dollars per motorist due to road congestion. Traffic also increases stress and anxiety causing “road rage”, incidents which are responsible for nearly half of all fatal crashes.

Citizens of Mandeville and Madisonville are not strangers to this phenomena. Lines of cars occupy Highway 22 during the latter parts of the day for hours on end, causing commute times to elongate excessively. Commuters point the blame to the Madisonville swing bridge, which opens up every thirty minutes for boats to pass through on the Tchefuncte River. The National Coast Guard supervises all drawbridge operation regulations, and Section 117.500 of the Government Publishing Office requires that the Tchefuncte River Swing Bridge open every 30 minutes, regardless if boaters are waiting to pass or not. These strict policies set by the National Coast Guard have generated some unintended ramifications for Northshore commuters.

The bridge’s recurring delay, accompanied with the red light off of Madisonville’s Main street, occludes the natural flow of traffic, causing congestion to extend for miles down Highway 22, even into Mandeville. Google Maps estimates the commute from Mandeville High School to the Madisonville bridge to take only 11 minutes during the earlier parts of the day. Nearing the afternoon however, Google predicts the commute time to more than triple, ranging from 26 minutes to upwards of 30 minutes. Several Mandeville High students report the trip taking nearly 45 minutes on some days.

This problem has not surfaced recently. St.Tammany parish residents have been dealing with the consequences of a poorly managed rush hour for decades. The St.Tammany Newspaper published an article in 1997 titled, “Bridge Burdens Madisonville Traffic” in which the paper detailed, “Madisonville officials want to limit how often the Louisiana 22 drawbridge over the Tchefuncte River can be opened during peak drive times”. Despite the traffic problems surrounding Madisonville being recognized over twenty years ago, the issue has only worsened since then. With little effort made by the city or state to rectify this ongoing problem- likely due to state budget issues-some frustrated citizens are taking responsibility into their own hands.

While this solution would likely alleviate much of the stress on daily commuters, the proposal was not welcomed unanimously. Because the bridge would partially run through Fairview State Park, some parts of the marsh and wetlands would be destroyed in the process of building the structure. The swamps and wetlands are staples of the city of Madisonville, which offers a seamless blend of riverside entertainment with the expansive natural environment surrounding it. National Geographic recognizes the swamps and marshlands in the southern United States as among the most essential ecosystems on the planet writing, ”[Marshes] buffer stormy seas, slow shoreline erosion, offer shelter and nesting sites for migratory water birds, and absorb excess nutrients that would lower oxygen levels in the sea and harm wildlife”. Destroying parts of this sacred landscape might present too big of a compromise for many residents to support for clearer traffic. In his presentation to the Chamber of Commerce, however, Royston offers an

upside to more environmentally focused citizens. He claims that the toll bridge would improve air quality around the Tchefuncte River and the science behind this claim holds true. University of Surrey reports, “Pollution levels were found to be up to 40% higher while in traffic jams or at a red traffic light compared to free-flowing traffic conditions”.

Clifton Royston, an engineer and Madisonville resident, proposed a solution to Highway 22’s lingering predicament. Royston appeared before St. Tammany’s West Chamber of Commerce on March 13th to suggest a 1.4-mile, elevated bridge that would begin on Highway 21 near Acosa Shipyard, cross the Tchefuncte River, and end on Highway 22 near Fairview Riverside park. This bridge would ascend far above the water, allowing boaters to pass under without the need to open every 30 minutes. The absence of a stoplight following the bridge would promote a fluid movement of traffic through Madisonville. Royston predicts the cost of the bridge would total around $140 million to construct, thus requiring a two to three dollar toll to pass through it. His plan to construct the route will use no taxpayer money.

https://www.titlemax.com/discovery-center/the-ultimate-road-trip/road-rage-risk-and-caution/

With the plan still in its initial stages, it is unclear whether the bridge will be approved for construction. Despite the future remaining unknown, the notion of a new route over the Tchefuncte river has attracted both advocates and adversaries.

Royston’s argument before St. Tammany’s West Chamber of Commerce encompassed a plethora of benefits that would coincide with the bridge’s construction. In addition to shrinking commute times, Royston predicts the toll bridge would increase the real estate value of surrounding areas by stimulating commercial development and growth along highways 21, 22, and 1077. Hundreds of employment opportunities would arise in relation to building the bridge and the overpass would provide a new hurricane evacuation corridor for citizens. The Louisiana Department of Transportation estimates that 16,000 individual vehicles cross the swing bridge daily, an increase of 10% since 2015. With the population of St. Tammany Parish expected to increase from 338,000 to 460,000 by 2030, the traffic problem will only worsen if neglected.

Sophie Mandeville High Spinnakers

The Mandeville High Spinnakers could be described in one phrase: undeniably diligent. The team holds annual tryouts in March, and throughout the next year, the effort and commitment of the dancers is unwavering. The 2020-2021 Spinnakers have fallen victim to an eccentric year, but consistent quarantines and persistent reschedulings have wreaked no havoc on the morale of the team. Their motto for the year is “One team, one heartbeat,” and the Spinnakers have more than embodied this phrase throughout turbulent times.

A typical week in the life of a Spinnaker incorporates hours of dancing and conditioning. Practice is held nearly every day after school and the girls tirelessly perfect and adapt their routines, whether they are for a football game, basketball game, or competition. In the fall semester, the Spinnakers tend to focus more on football performance routines. This is when you will recognize them in bedazzled dresses and sleek white gloves and boots. Captain and senior, Ava Yoli, recalls Friday nights as “being connected with your peers and showing school spirit and pride”. It is “so much more than heading to the riot zone for a great football game,” she concludes.

Once the spring semester hits, competition dances play a much larger role. The Spinnakers are quickly approaching the epitome of their year: Nationals. Located in Orlando, Florida, this competition serves as a direct reflection of the hard-work and dedication of the team. Last year, the Spinnakers placed 10th in the nation with their game day routine. This year, the team is hopeful for another victory in game day and new, triumphant successes in the jazz and pom categories as well. Nationals will be held April 22nd and 23rd of this year, so be sure to wish the Spinnakers luck prior to this grand endeavor!

Scott Pilgrim vs. the WorldOliver Rosenau

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), directed by Edgar Wright, is a genre-bending film that checks off nearly every box any viewer could possibly want from a movie. The film takes elements from comedy, action, romance, drama, science fiction, and musical productions and mixes them together flawlessly. The storyline follows a quirky yet loveable bass guitarist named Scott Pilgrim (played by Micheal Cera) as he gets a new girlfriend, Ramona Flowers (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who is undeniably out of his league. Scott soon finds out that to continue dating Ramona he must defeat her seven evil exes. One by one the exes arrive and battle Scott in such theatrical and almost super-hero like ways, that makes the viewer feel more like they are reading a comic book than watching a movie.

The only thing that can top the very unique plot of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, is the cast and music of the film. Several large Hollywood stars have supporting roles in this movie. This includes: Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, and Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim. Also, music is the backbone of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. While all of the theatrics are taking place, a battle of the bands is also occurring. This leaves the viewer with multiple amazing covers and original songs to enjoy. For example, I personally listen to Brie Larson's cover of the band Metric’s song “Black Sheep”,which she performs in the film, regularly. So next time you are having trouble picking a movie to watch, I highly recommend Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. It will give you an entertaining couple of hours and satisfy you regardless of the genre of film you wanted to see.

Prince PhilipMia Schega

Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, peacefully passed away of natural causes at the age of 99 on Friday, April 9th of 2021. When members of the royal family in Britain pass away, a notice is posted outside of Buckingham Palace in a wooden frame. The same was done for the occasion of Prince Philip’s passing. The story of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II’s relationship has circulated throughout the media in response to the prince’s death. They fell in love at a young age, and in a letter Elizabeth had written to her parents, she wrote, “We behave as though we had belonged to each other for years”. This statement is a beautiful display of the 70-year long romance between the two.

Before marrying into the Royal Family, Philip was in Britain’s Royal Navy while attending the Royal Navy College, which is also when he began to exchange letters with Elizabeth. The couple got engaged in 1947 and were married the same year. They had four

children together: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. Elizabeth and Philip’s relationship lasted a lifetime, and their story will go down in history. Queen Elizabeth II, though widowed, will continue to reign as the longest-standing monarch Britain has had. Prince Philip is gone but not forgotten and has created his own legacy by founding the Royal Academy of Engineering, serving the poor, serving as the president of the World Wildlife Fund, and so much more.

Book Review: A Good Girl’s Guide to MurderSophie Gros

In the small town of Little Kilton, the most interesting thing to ever happen was Andie Bell, or more specifically, her murder. For her senior project, Pippa Fitz-Amobi, an ambitious student, takes it upon herself to solve this closed murder case. Andie Bell was thought to be murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, but Pippa disagreed. Sal was the happiest person anyone had ever known; he certainly was not capable of murder. Even five years later, Andie’s body had never been found. Pippa, or Pip, made it her mission to prove Sal’s innocence, and maybe find Andie’s true killer along the way.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson hooks the reader from the start with an interesting scenario and a shocking storyline. Throughout the novel, the more that Pip uncovers about Andie and Sal, the more engaged the reader becomes. The story is a maze, full of twists and turns, and will constantly leave the reader guessing. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is the perfect puzzle, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an appetite for mystery.

SAVE stands for “Students Against Violence Everywhere” and is an offshoot of the Sandy Hook Promise, a group formed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December of 2012. What began as a local group of concerned citizens advocating for ways to reduce gun violence has expanded into a national foundation that seeks to reduce and end all forms of violence including domestic violence, firearm violence, and self-harm.

The SAVE Club meets after school every other Wednesday from 2:45 - 3:20. Our mission is to promote an atmosphere on campus that creates a safe, tolerant, and inclusive space for all Skippers. We serve as the link between the student body and administration, and we can present issues of concern in a manner that protects students’ privacy and well-being.

Restaurant Review: Ploy's KitchenSydney Gauthier

Ever since January 23rd, 2021, ten days after the grand opening, Ploy’s Kitchen became the go-to place for take-out with my family after we tried their food for the first time. Located on 2890 E Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70448, Ploy’s Kitchen serves mouthwatering Thai food abundant with flavor and spices. Although the restaurant is only serving take-out during this time, the food still tastes fresh and scrumptious, as if it was served in the restaurant.

Our go-to meal consists of the coconut shrimp (fried jumbo shrimp coated with coconut flakes and Japanese panko bread crumbs, served with sweet chili sauce) and roti (pan seared Indian style flatbread served with red curry sauce) for our appetizers. For our entrées, we order the pad Thai (the popular noodle, wok-fried with rice noodles, egg, scallion, crushed peanuts, carrots, and bean sprouts in pad Thai sauce- your choice of protein) and the green curry (green curry spices, cooked in coconut milk with bamboo shoots, carrots, zucchini, pineapple, and basil leaves, served with jasmine rice- your choice of protein). Every bite of the pad Thai results in an explosion of flavor as the ingredients meld together perfectly to create an exquisite bite. Additionally, the green curry is full of spices and heat, radiating the feeling of warmth and comfort with every spoonful.

If you are looking for a new restaurant to try out, I would highly recommend Ploy’s Kitchen. Their flavorful food and excellent customer service make it the perfect place for take-out.
