game off well, we had the ball, but we get one against us early on and it made the difference,” said Red Bulls midfielder Juninho Pernambucano. “After the goal, we continued to play possession but eventually the game levelled off. After the red, it became more difficult for us.”

The Red Bulls have started a season winless in their first four games for the first time since 2009, when they opened the campaign 0-2-2. Their longest winless stretch to begin a season came in 2006, when they started 0-1-5.

“If this is any other league in the world, it’s maybe a little worrisome,” said Red Bulls captain Dax McCarty. “But for us, we just stay positive and try to stay sharp in training because these last two games haven’t been terrible

performances, just been kind of lacking a little bit of continuity in the final third. [We’ve got to] just keep going. It’s a long season, try to make the playoffs, 30 more games to make it right.”

Thierry Henry did not play in the match after suffering a sprain to the MCL in his left knee in the D.C. United match, and his availability for the Union match is still in question.

“Of course, there’s some tenderness and discomfort [but] we like where he’s at early in the week. [He was] competing in full training with certain times a little bit of limited mobility, but we like where he’s at right now,” said Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke.

Center back Jamisón Olave also missed out on the Montréal match, held out because of the artificial surface at Olympic Stadium.

“It was a situation that how his knee reacted to the turf in [the season opener vs. the Portland Timbers] and it was advised by the medical staff not to play him on turf,” said Petke. “It’s a long season and why risk losing him now? We went with the medical advice, which I trust, and that’s why he didn’t play.”

Péguy Luyindula made his MLS debut, starting in attack and playing 79 minutes alongside Fabian Espíndola. “We saw some very good things from Péguy. I think we saw the quality he has,” Petke said. “I think eight out of

10 times, he finishes one of those couple of chances he had and perhaps that’s chalked up to his first real 90 minutes in a long time. … His movement of the ball was very good, defensively he was committing to the pressure and everything, so it’s definitely something to build on.”

There was another injury blow during the week leading up to the Philadelphia match as Espíndola suffered a hamstring knock that kept him out of training.

PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union return to league play following a weekend off, their last match a 1-0 victory against the New England Revolution on March 16 at PPL Park. Union sit in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 3 matches. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came after 75 minutes. The initial header by Jack McInerney from a Sebastien Le Toux corner kick was saved by Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, but McInerney pounced on the rebound and put into the back of the net.

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath was credited with two saves in his first clean sheet of the season. Union team manager John Hackworth made no changes to the team that came away with a 2-1 win against the

Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-1-3-2): Zac MacMath - Sheanon Williams, Jeff Parke, Amobi Okugo, Raymon

Gaddis - Brian Carroll - Danny Cruz (Michael Lahoud 8), Keon Daniel, Michael Farfan (Antoine Hoppenot 67) - Sebastien Le Toux, Jack McInerney (Chris Albright 87).

TEAM NEWS Union return to action following a bye week that followed a second consecutive victory. A year ago, they

opened the season winless in four matches before recording back-to-back wins. “I don’t remember who I was talking to but I was saying that last season we started 0-4 and put ourselves in a

deep hole,” said Sheanon Williams. “This year we are starting off well and putting ourselves in a good position to have a good season. I think that will be big going forward so obviously again we were at home, so getting points at home for us are huge – and if they are three, they are even better.”

Each of Union’s last two goals have come from corner kicks – matching their total from corners for the entire 2012 season.

"To be honest, we knew last year with set pieces, offensively and defensively it was kind of a weak point," said defender Amobi Okugo. "I think early in the season we were joking with Seba, saying 'why is he taking corner kicks?', because we knew in the past he wasn't as good (with his service). But, to his credit, he's been putting in great balls and whether it's me, or Jack, or anyone else, we've been able to find space and get it on target."

Said Hackworth: “To [Le Toux’s] credit, he's been really consistent, and he's serving such a good ball. That's another aspect of being dangerous on corner kicks, and he continues to do that. I think that's just a development in his own game."

Union’s attacking fortunes changed with the introduction of Antoine Hoppenot at the three-quarter mark of the match. Hoppenot started three times in his 25 appearances in his rookie season.

“I think that when we moved Michael Farfan out wide left, he started out on the ball [New England] didn’t have a great way to defend that,” Hackworth said. “We just wanted to see if we could put Antoine in that situation. Now Antoine is going to stretch the defense with a lot of energy and a lot of pace and he did that. That allowed Jack McInerney to move out there and you are basically playing a 4-3-3 at that point and that opened the game.”

During their off week, Union completed the signing of 33-year-old former Brazilian international Kléberson. He has 32 caps with Brazil, and featured on their winning teams in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, 2004 Copa América and 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, while also being selected to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“We’re excited to have a player with his kind of experience join an already talented roster,” Hackworth said. “Kléberson has had success at the world’s highest level of competition – both on a club and international level – and we hope he can add another dimension to our team.”

On their off weekend, Union defeated Pumas UNAM of Mexico 1-0 at PPL Park in a somewhat ill-tempered friendly. The game’s lone goal came from Michael Farfan in the 68th minute; six yellow cards were shown on the evening.

“Regardless of friendly, Open Cup, whatever – anyone that comes to PPL Park is in for a fight,” said defender Williams. “That’s just how we’re going to play.”

Here’s the Union team: Konopka, Williams, Okugo (Jordan 46’), Parke (Carroll 46’), Gaddis, Lahoud, Torres (M. Farfan 61’), Hernandez (McInerney 61’), McLaughlin (Wheeler 46’), Fernandes, Hoppenot (Le Toux 61’)

RED BULLS VS. PHILADELPHIA UNION – MARCH 30, 2013 – 3:30 PM ET

BULLETIN BOARD NEW YORK BATTLES RIVAL PHILADELPHIA The New York Red Bulls are looking forward to their second home match of the season when they take on I-95 rival, the Philadelphia Union, at Red Bull Arena Saturday at 3:30 PM (TV: NBC Sports Network; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). Despite a close encounter, the Red Bulls fell 1-0 to the undefeated Montreal Impact last Saturday at Olympic Stadium. The result kept New York at two points off a 0-2-2 record, as the Red Bulls started the season playing three of their first four matches of 2013 on the road. In New York’s home opener in front of 22,022 at Red Bull Arena on March 16, the Red Bulls outshot D.C. United 24-4, but ended settling for a 0-0 tie. The Red Bulls return home to face a Union side that is led by team manager John Hackworth and strike duo Sebastien Le Toux and Jack McInerney. Philadelphia boasts a 2-1-0 record and six points following its most recent 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution March 16 behind McInerney’s team-leading second goal of the season. Philadelphia is hoping the strong start maintains throughout the season, as they are looking to earn a spot in the MLS Playoffs in 2013 after failing to qualify last year. Philadelphia did not compete in MLS action last weekend, but did defeat Mexican side, UNAM Pumas, 1-0, at PPL Park last Saturday, with Michael Farfan recording the game’s only goal. Le Toux spent the second half of the 2012 season with New York before being dealt to Philadelphia for his second stint with the Union on Dec. 6 in exchange for forward Josue Martinez and allocation money. New York has had their rival’s number in recent times. In 2012, the Red Bulls went a perfect 3-0 against the Union, winning twice at PPL Park and once at Red Bull Arena. In the teams’ last match, New York shutout Philadelphia, 3-0, on Oct. 27 on the road. The Red Bulls are 5-2-0 all-time against the Union and have won four-straight matches against their Eastern Conference foe. RED BULLS HANG TIGHT BUT FALL 1-0 TO IMPACT In a tight match, the New York Red Bulls dropped a 1-0 decision to Eastern Conference leader, the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium last Saturday. Montreal took the lead in the 14th minute. Patrice Bernier chipped it over the top to an on-side Marco Di Vaio, who got behind the Red Bulls’ back line and tucked it past goalkeeper Luis Robles. New York’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes came with seven minutes left in the half. Defender Heath Pearce got free at the back post and forced goalkeeper Troy Perkins to make a stop off of his header. Perkins again blocked Pearce’s follow-up attempt before the Red Bull cut it back to Peguy Luyindula. Luyindula, however, could not keep his first-time attempt on target. Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made a number of saves to keep the visitors in the match, including tipping away a blast from Montreal’s Andrea Pisanu in the 51st minute. Nine minutes later, Perkins came up with another big stop, stuffing Jonny Steele from close range. Perkins then sprawled to his right with 20 minutes to play to touch a Luyindula deflection to safety. New York was reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute when Brandon Barklage earned his second yellow card, ejecting him from the match. Despite not finding the back of the net, Luyindula created chances for the Red Bulls, shooting over the bar in the first half off a Heath Pearce feed and then forcing Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins to make a big save in the 70th minute. RED BULLS VS. PHILADELPHIA UNION – MARCH 30, 2013 – 3:30 PM ET

Cahill was called up for Australia’s qualifier against Oman on March 26 in Sydney, Australia and scored his 27th goal in his 61st appearance for his national team in a come-from-behind 2-2 tie against Oman. Cahill nodded home Luke Wilkshire’s corner kick in the 52nd minute to make the score 2-1 before the Socceroos earned a point following Brett Holman’s equalizer. The Australian has started in three matches for New York this season. After joining the Red Bulls during the 2012 season, Cahill started in 12 regular season matches and two postseason games, notching a goal and three assists. Australia is currently in a tie for third place in Group B in Asian World Cup Qualifying with 6 points with Oman, trailing second-place Jordan by one point. Australia has a game in hand on Jordan and Oman. Miller tallied his 37th cap and played 90 minutes for Costa Rica in a 1-0 loss to the United States on March 22 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. A member of the Red Bulls since 2010, Miller has started in two regular season matches this year. He has amassed 81 appearances and 11 assists in Major League Soccer for New York. LE TOUX RETURNS TO FACE FORMER CLUB Forward Sebastien Le Toux will face the Red Bulls – his former side – for the first time on Saturday since he was traded to Philadelphia on Dec. 6, 2012 in exchange for forward Josue Martinez and allocation money. Le Toux, who was out of contract with New York at the end of the 2012 season, was acquired by New York on July 13, 2012 from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for Dane Richards and allocation money. In his stint with the Red Bulls, Le Toux played in 14 games (nine starts) and recorded one goal and one assist. RED BULLS SIGN TWO-TIME MLS CUP WINNER HARTMAN The New York Red Bulls announced Friday, March 22, that they have signed two-time MLS Cup winning goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. In addition to being a part of the senior roster, Hartman will serve as a Goalkeeping Development Manager, working with the club’s young goalkeepers, including academy players. “We would like to welcome Kevin to the Red Bulls,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “As one of MLS’ most successful goalkeepers of all time, Kevin brings a wealth of playing experience and the knowledge of what it takes to be successful at the highest level. That’s why we are delighted that Kevin will pass on that knowledge to our next generation of goalkeepers in the role of Goalkeeping Development Manager, while also giving us another quality goalkeeping option as part of our first team roster.” Hartman is one of the most decorated players in Major League Soccer history. The only player in League history to play and start over 400 regular season matches in MLS, Hartman joins the Red Bulls following three years at FC Dallas. Last year, Hartman recorded 30 starts and earned six shutouts, adding to his all-time shutout record which currently stands at 112. During his time in Frisco, Hartman compiled 83 starts and helped FC Dallas reach the MLS Cup Final in 2010. The 38-year-old started his career with the LA Galaxy in 1997 after being drafted in the 1997 College Draft from UCLA and went onto win MLS Cups with his side in 2002 and 2005. During this time, Hartman and the Galaxy also captured two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups in 2001 and 2005 and a pair of MLS Supporters’ Shield titles in 1998 and 2002. Following a 1999 campaign which saw him make 32 starts, earning a 20-12 record and 11 shutouts, Hartman won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award and was a part of the MLS Best XI. The five-time MLS All-Star and five-time finalist for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award also was a member of Kansas City from 2007-09, where he started every minute of each of the 90 regular season matches during his tenure. Overall, the 13-time MLS Cup Playoffs participant has amassed 416

regular season appearances, 37,260 minutes played and a career 180-143-89 record. Though these matches, Hartman has posted a 1.21 goals against average and set the record for lowest single season GAA in 2010 with FC Dallas, recording a 0.62 mark. Hartman has earned five caps for the U.S National Team. BARKLAGE SUSPENDED New York defender/midfielder Brandon Barklage picked up two yellow cards in the Red Bulls’ 1-0 loss at Montreal Saturday, earning an automatic one-game suspension that he will serve on Saturday in the team’s match versus the Philadelphia Union. Barklage will next be available for selection for the Red Bulls’ April 7 encounter with the Chicago Fire. FOR STARTERS Following New York’s 0-0 tie against D.C. United on March 16, it is now 11-3-4 in its home openers, including a 6-0-4 mark since 2004. The Red Bulls’ March 3 showdown against Portland (3-3 tie) was the 11th time the New York franchise has opened its season on the road (out of 18 seasons). All-time, New York is 7-7-4 in season openers and 2-6-3 in the 11 times it started its campaign away from home. In its first road matches of the season, New York has a total record of 6-7-5. This is the fourth season in club history that New York has started its campaign with two-straight matches on the road (1997, 1998 and 2012 were the other times). In the three other seasons, New York started the year 0-2, meaning that its 3-3 tie at Portland was the first time that it has earned a point under this scheduling scenario. TRIGGER HAPPY The New York Red Bulls registered 24 shots in their match against D.C. United on March 16. It was the first time since April 6, 2002 that New York has recorded that many shots (New York had 27 in a 2-1 win over Columbus). CLEANING UP Goalkeeper Luis Robles made two saves, including a block on a Chris Pontius drive, while the Red Bulls defense held firm for most of the team’s 0-0 tie against D.C. United March 16. It was New York’s first clean sheet of the season and Robles’ third of his MLS career. Last year, New York posted eight shutouts. RED BULLS PEN OBEKOP AND RAFHINHA The New York Red Bulls announced March 18 that they have signed midfielder Marius Obekop and forward Rafhinha. In regards to Obekop and Rafhinha, Roxburgh said: “Both of these young players have shown signs that they can play at the Major League Soccer level and we are pleased to follow their progress this season.” Obekop, 18, was previously with Cameroon MTN Elite One side, Renaissance FC de Nhoumou, where he scored five goals in 18 games during the 2012 and helped his team to the quarterfinals of the Cameroon Cup. A former member of the Arsenal de Yaounde youth organization, Obekop debuted for the Cameroon Under-20 team, appearing for his nation twice during the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers. NEWCOMERS GET OFF THE MARK Three offseason acquisitions have all accounted for the team’s goals so far this young season. Former Real Salt Lake duo Fabian Espindola and Jamison Olave made their Red Bulls debuts on March 3 at Portland and both scored. Espindola tallied two goals in the ninth and 24th minutes with a pair of left-footed shots that beat goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts while Olave fired home a Heath Pearce cross in the 28th minute for his first goal since July 23, 2011 – a 4-0 Real Salt Lake win over San Jose. Espindola became the first player in club history to score two goals in his debut. The Red Bulls acquired Espindola and Olave from Real Salt Lake on Dec. 3, 2012 in exchange for allocation money. On March 10 at San Jose, midfielder Eric Alexander, acquired in an offseason trade with the Portland Timbers, recorded a first half goal in his first start as a Red Bull. Alexander’s last MLS goal was on Sept. 16, 2010 for FC Dallas. The opponent? New York. PETKE MAKES DEBUT Mike Petke officially made his head coaching debut in New York’s 3-3 tie with the Portland Timbers. The 13th individual to earn the New York top position, Petke faced off on Sunday against another first-time MLS head coach – former University of Akron head coach Caleb Porter. Petke, who is one of the club’s most popular all-time players and its leader in games played, was previously serving New York as head coach on an interim basis before being the named permanently to the position on Jan. 24. Petke, 37, finished his second season as an assistant coach on New York’s staff after an illustrious playing career. He joined the coaching ranks in 2011 following a 13-year career that included two playing stints with the club from 1998-2002 and 2008-10. The Bohemia, NY native holds the current club record for games played, with 169 (196 in all competitions), games started (158 regular season) and minutes played (14,060 regular season). Drafted by New York in 1998 with the 8th overall pick in the MLS Draft, Petke made his debut on April 17, 1998 against the Chicago Fire. He helped the team to its first Eastern Division title in 2000 and was thrice named an MLS All-Star. Petke was traded to D.C. United before the 2003 season and won his only MLS Cup in 2004 with United. He was then traded to Colorado during their 2005 campaign, helping the Rapids to reach the Western Conference Finals. The Red Bulls signed Petke again at the end of 2008 and he played 35 more matches for the team until retiring following the 2010 season. He was named the club’s 2009 Defender of the Year and helped New York to its second Eastern Conference regular season title in his final season. Petke finished his career with 307 appearances in league play (351 in all competitions), in which he scored 13 goals and added four assists. He is one of 16 MLS players who has appeared in 300 or more career regular season matches. Petke also appeared in nine playoff matches and 13 U.S. Open Cup matches as a member of the New York franchise and earned two caps for the United States. Prior to his professional career, Petke spent four years at Southern Connecticut State University, leading the team to the NCAA Division II National title in 1995. DUO MAKES FIRST START, MORENO DEBUTS Midfielders Eric Alexander and Jonny Steele made their first starts as Red Bulls in New York’s 2-1 loss to San Jose on March 10. Steele played 69 minutes before being replaced by Ruben Bover while Alexander, who scored the only goal for New York, played 87 minutes. New York traded for Steele’s rights on Feb. 20 in exchange for a conditional supplemental draft pick. Alexander was acquired from the Portland Timbers in exchange for allocation money on Feb. 11.

In addition, 17-year-old Red Bulls Academy product Amando Moreno made his professional debut as a second half stoppage time substitute against San Jose. Signed on Dec. 11, 2012, Moreno became the fourth Academy player promoted to the Red Bulls First Team (out of seven) total to feature in a MLS match (Juan Agudelo, Matt Kassel and Connor Lade are the others). JUNINHO, BOVER EARN MLS DEBUTS Midfielders Juninho and Ruben Bover made their respective MLS debuts on March 3 at Portland. Juninho played the full 90 minutes while Bover started, tallied an assist and featured for 66 minutes before being substituted. The Red Bulls signed Juninho on Dec. 17 from Brazilian First Division side Vasco da Gama. In his second and recent stint at Vasco da Gama, Juninho played 50 games since 2011 and recorded 14 goals. Prior to that, Juninho was with Qatari club Al-Gharafa, helping his team take home the league title and winning the Player of the Year honors. The Union enter the game after a bye week in which they defeated Pumas UNAM of Liga MX 1-0 in an international friendly.

Philadelphia is now on a three game winning streak following their season opening loss. The Union had won their previous two MLS games, including beating New England 1-0 two weeks ago at PPL Park.

In the friendly against Pumas, Michael Farfan scored the match’s lone goal on a 68th minute strike set up by Aaron Wheeler, who was making his Union debut.

The win improved Philadelphia to 5-1 all-time in international friendlies at PPL Park and 2-0 against Mexican clubs.

The game-winning goal against New England went to Jack McInerney in the 76th minute with his shot right inside the box. McInerney scored on his own rebound of a Bobby Shuttleworth save after his original header on a corner kick from Sebastien Le Toux.

The assist gave Le Toux his second of the year, the most on the team, and also extended his Union career record to 22.

The Union have never beaten New York on the road.

The Union are 2-1-0 during the 2013 season, and 1-0-0 away from home. They went 10-18-6 in the 2012 MLS regular season and 3-12-4 at home.

New York comes into the game after dropping their previous game 1-0 on Saturday to Montreal. They are still winless on the season having lost two and tied twice.

New York gave up the lone goal last week to Marco Di Vaio on an assist from Patrice Bernier. It was Bernier’s third game-winning assist, the most in the league this season.

The Red Bulls had the edge in possession last game with a 58% to 42% advantage but it only resulted in two more shots taken.

The Red Bulls have had trouble holding onto a lead late in games and scoring the ball this year. In their first two games they gave up tying goals in the 83rd minutes and failed to score on 24 shots against D.C. United in their third match.

Five yellow cards were given to NY players on Saturday, including two to Brandon Barklage, who will be suspended for the upcoming game. Juninho, Jonathan Steele, and Eric Alexander also received cards.

New York leads the MLS in shots taken with 62, six more than the second place team. However they are sixth in shots on goal for the league, with 17. New York also leads the league in fouls committed, at 65.

UNION v NEW YORK FIXTURE HISTORY

Page 29: Match Notes: Red Bulls vs. Union

Kenny Cooper of New York scored the first and third goals of the game in the 13th and 66th minutes. His first came on a PK after a Carlos Valdes foul in the box, while the second was set up by Dax McCarty. The goals gave him five total against the Union on the year.

The other goal for the Red Bulls came from Thierry Henry and was unassisted in the 35th minute.

The game marked the return to PPL Park of former Union forward Sebastien Le Toux as a member of the Red Bulls. Le Toux entered the game in the 74th minute for Kenny Cooper. He played the full 90 in a game earlier in the year against his former team while with Vancouver. Le Toux was the leader in many career statistics for the Union including goals, assists, shots, and games played prior to his departure.

The game saw two yellow cards given out, both to Red Bull players. Rafael Marquez received one in the 61st minute while Thierry Henry was given one in the 93rd.

The game saw a large disparity in shots with Philadelphia taking the most attempts. The Union outshot the Red Bulls 15 to six but only had two on target compared to New York’s four.

The possession was almost even, with Philadelphia taking a 51.7% to 48.3% edge. Opposite Directions:

The Union are on a three game winning streak following their win over Pumas UNAM on Saturday. Two of those wins have come in MLS league play as they defeated Colorado and New England.

New York is winless on the year so far, losing twice and drawing twice. They have alternated ties and losses with their last game out being a loss to Montreal 1-0.

Deal Makers:

Brazilian midfielder José Kléberson comes to Philadelphia Union on loan from Esporte Clube Bahia, a deal that was made official March 25. He has had a strong career, spending time with Manchester United, Flamengo, and winning the 2002 World Cup with Brazil.

On the same date Philadelphia agreed to a mutual contract termination with Freddy Adu. Adu made 35 appearances for the Union, scoring seven times and assisting twice.

The Union sent Cristhian Hernandez, Greg Jordan, and Jimmy McLaughlin on loan to Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL PRO on March 25. All three players saw time in the Union’s friendly against Pumas but had yet to appear in a league game this season.

Return From Duty:

Union midfielder Keon Daniel and defender Bakary Soumare return to the team following time spent with their respective national teams. Daniel was called-up by Trinidad and Tobago for two friendlies against Belize and Peru. Daniel started against Belize in a 0-0 draw. Soumare was playing for Mali in 2014 World Cup Qualifying against Rowanda.

Rough Road:

The Union have never defeated the Red Bulls on the road in their history. They lost games each year since their inception in 2010 at Red Bull Arena.

MIA:

Brandon Barklage will be suspended for the upcoming game after receiving two yellow cards last week against Montreal. His first came in the 66th minute and was followed only eight minutes later with his second.

Record Setters:

Sebastien Le Toux extended his Union club record for career assist record to 22 last game. He has also extended his Union club record career goals record to 26 this season.

Double Debut:

In the Union’s friendly against Pumas, Aaron Wheeler and Leo Fernandes made their club and MLS debuts. Fernandes drew the start and played in the first half and into the second half. Wheeler came into the game after halftime and was the man who assisted Michael Farfan’s game-winner.
