ON THE COVER: Jefferson Elementary fifth grade students in Mrs. Kauitzsch’s Reading class became published authors through Studentreasures Publishing. Each student wrote and illustrated pages for a book in which they documented their future educational goals and career aspirations while lending advice for themselves in the future. The books will provide lasting memories and serve as a resource for years to come.
Parents and guardians can monitor their student’s progress through a click of a mouse by using the Parent
Self Serve Portal at http://buff.ly/1EZi9l4.

KEEP UP WITH GRADES
Believe it or not, as this issue of Matador Pride hits the press, we have merely four months remaining until school is out for summer. Yet it’s during these next few months when the entire year of instruction culminates as our
students take their state-man-dated exams.
I appreci-ate the efforts of our teach-ers and campus administrator. Since the first day of school our teachers have remained
focused on instruction to create every opportunity for our students to perform above state average on the STAAR tests that will be administered this spring. As educators, we owe this to our students, to our families and to the community of Seguin.
Last month, we took the opportuni-ty to thank our school board members for their service to Seguin ISD. January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas and it was great to see our cam-puses show their support during our Jan. 12 school board meeting.
Each year the district dedicates time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our Seguin community and our schools. School board members are extraordinary peo-ple who voluntarily tackle the enor-mous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children.
Recognizing board members for this commitment and sacrifice takes a com-
bined effort on the part of all those they serve: administrators, school staff, students, and the community. I truly believe that these important people receive the thanks that they deserve.
In regard to the board of trustees, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest board member. On Jan. 22, Mrs. Carol Sewell was appointed to fill the District 7 seat previously held by Mrs. Nancy Ayotte. Mrs. Sewell has considerable experience volunteering her time and talents in Texas public schools. I had a chance to sit down and talk with her after her appointment and enjoyed learning about her passion for children. I look forward to her contri-bution and leadership as a member of our Team of Eight.
All of Seguin ISD’s regular board meetings are open to the public. Meetings dates are posted on our web site (seguinisd.net) and all board votes are taken during open session in front of the public. Additionally, last fall we began video recording our regu-lar board meetings and posting them in their entirety on the district web site. These can be found on the Board of Trustees page that is listed on the Administration page menu.
Thank you for your continued sup-port of Seguin ISD schools.

MBLC’s Valdez named National Hispanic Scholar
Mercer Blumberg Learning Center (MBLC) student Israel Valdez has been selected as a National Hispanic Scholar under the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program.
Valdez earned an invitation to apply for the prestigious program because he scored in the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino PSAT/NMSQT takers in the region.
“Israel is a very bright student who came to MBLC with a set of goals and he remains focused on accomplishing them. He works very hard and he is an awesome student. Israel spends his mornings at the Central Texas Technology Center before coming to MBLC. He also remains in AP Computer Science courses at Seguin High School. He is really just an all around great student that comes to school and works hard,” said Jay Law, MBLC principal.
According to the College Board, being named a National Hispanic Scholar is an academic honor that can be included on college applications. While it is not a scholarship, colleges use the program to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students.
Law says that Valdez will put the honor of being a National Hispanic Scholar to good use.
“His dream is to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he had an interview with them in December. But he is also looking at Rice and several other Ivy League schools,” he said.
