The program has an excellent record of receiving high rates of graduate satisfaction in preparing students for employment by architecture practices within Australia and throughout the world.

Be recognisedThe Master of Architecture program is accredited by the State Boards of Architects through the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects as the professional prerequisite degree for registration. Completion of the Master of Architecture program together with a minimum of two years professional experience and the professional practice exam (conducted by the State boards of architects) leads to registration as an architect in Australia and many other countries through reciprocal agreements.

Costs Australian students are supported by the Commonwealth Government. This means the Federal Government pays for some you the program and you pay the rest, either up front or in the form of a HECS_HELP loan. HECS-HELP loans are available only to Australian citizens and Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders. New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent visa holders are required to pay their student contribution in full to the University.

International students are required to pay the full tuition cost of the program. In 2011 the cost will be approximately $21 200 AUD. International students are also required to have overseas student health cover.

the Master of arChiteCtUre LeCtUre series In 2010, a number of prominent architects from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and England were invited to undertake critique and tutorial with both first and final year students within the degree. Each delivered a lecture about their current work with an emphasis on how the work is undertaken and produced within the office.

oUr GradUates do weLLOur students continue to win a disproportionate share of national and state awards in greater numbers than the other universities in NSW.

iN 2010Lachlan Seegers received a commendation in the highly competitive 2010 Student Biennale (from all work produced in all architecture schools in Australia over a two year period) and also took out the AIA NSW Design Medal – the most prestigious award for a graduating architectural student in NSW.

Romi McPherson received an AIA NSW Design Medal commendation.Two out of the five graduates selected were selected for the Australian Institute of Architects 2010 Dulux Study Tour were Michael McPherson and David Sutherland.

GradUate ProfiLe LaChLaN seeGersLachlan’s interest in architecture was evident from the time he started technical drawing as part of his wood and metal work classes at Gulgong High School. During these classes he would draw an object then build what he had drawn. This interest in design inspired Lachlan to study architecture.

After completing his Bachelor of Design (Architecture) in 2005, he moved to Melbourne for work experience but returned in 2008 to undertake his Master of Architecture.

“Studying at the University of Newcastle was really enjoyable. In fact I moved to Melbourne in between completing my Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and starting my Master of Architecture to gain practical experience with Architects Denton Corker Marshall. I ended up staying in Melbourne for two years but it was the great atmosphere at the School of Architecture and Built Environment that led me back to the University of Newcastle instead of RMIT.”

Lachlan has won several prestige awards, the most recent being the 2010 AIA Design Medal for NSW graduates of Architecture, the most prestigious graduation prize in the state. Other accolades include the University of Newcastle 2010 Chair of Architectural Design prize for his performance in the Master of Architecture program, the 2009 Rice Daubney Design prize for the best fourth year architecture design performance and a commendation in the 2010 National Colourbond Steel Student Biennale, the most prestigious graduation prize in the nation awarded bi-annually for graduates of architecture.

“After winning these awards I received numerous job offers but for now, I’m happily employed at the University of Newcastle as a casual academic teaching and tutoring 1st to 4th year students. In 2011, I plan to move overseas for a few years of roaming.”

2010 saw the opening of our brand-new 840m2 workshop located only metres away from the Architecture Design Studio building. Once inducted, you will have the opportunity to combine high-end technologies with traditional workshop tools to realise your design projects. The School has invested in the latest prototyping technologies including 3D Printers, a 10-tool CNC router, a fully-automated vacuum former and a large-format laser cutter (that can cut up to 25mm acrylic!) to provide the best opportunity to create the highest quality of models.

The workshop has been designed to include areas such as a: teaching classroom student storage area dedicated spray booth specialty room to use advanced

materials such as carbon-fibre, kevlar and mylar

Computing facilities are also available within the building

Our team of experienced workshop technicians has extensive knowledge and expertise across a wide-range of materials and processes to assist you in creating the professional-standard model you’ve always wanted to produce.

The digital design studio was established in 2009 and has been equipped with world leading computational design technologies including haptic modelling devices, 3D scanning devices and interactive graphic interfaces. High-end computer software such as free-form modelling applications, parametric design applications and BIM have been installed in all student computers within the School. These advanced tools will contribute to the newly developed computational design strength of the School, preparing designers for the digital era.

Year 1The architectural projects in the first year of the program focus on:

the design of a high rise building (typically in Sydney)

an urban design project that involves the developed design of a selected building

a mixed use project.

Other conceptually based projects run throughout the year are supported by Professors Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury. These design projects emphasise creative, social, cultural and ecological issues relating to urbanism, landscape and the built environment. To provide flexibility within the degree, the first year also incorporates a self-directed research project that can be undertaken off campus.

Year 2The second year of the degree provides you with the opportunity to develop your own elective project over the course of the year, applying in-depth research and resolution to a selected design problem.

The final exhibited project, developed within a creative and innovative learning environment, explores the complexities of making buildings for the future of the built environment. The comprehensive way that each stage of the architectural design process is articulated, critiqued and developed provides the student with a portfolio of work that reflects the making of buildings in the real world.

Projects undertaken by students often have real world clients and reflect the challenging environment in which architects find themselves. The degree is supported by our visiting professors and other leading architects through the Master of Architecture Lecture Series.

The degree is flexible allowing you to plan and manage your studies on a full-time or part-time basis.

The problem based learning and inclusive approach to studio teaching is one of the strengths of the architecture postgraduate degree at the University of Newcastle.

Be recognisedThe Master of Architecture program is accredited by the State Boards of Architects through the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects as the professional prerequisite degree for registration. Completion of the Master of Architecture program together with a minimum of two years professional experience and the professional practice exam (conducted by the State boards of architects) leads to registration as an architect in Australia and many other countries through reciprocal agreements.

Costs Australian students are supported by the Commonwealth Government. This means the Federal Government pays for some you the program and you pay the rest, either up front or in the form of a HECS_HELP loan. HECS-HELP loans are available only to Australian citizens and Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders. New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent visa holders are required to pay their student contribution in full to the University.

International students are required to pay the full tuition cost of the program. In 2011 the cost will be approximately $21 200 AUD. International students are also required to have overseas student health cover.
