As this brochure goes to press, the MorganLibrary & Museum is hosting Mark Twain:A Skeptic’s Progress, featuring the manuscriptof A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.Inspired to re-read the 1889 work of America’squintessential author and humorist, I cameacross the passage, quoted above, uttered bythe novel’s cornered and exhausted protagonist,Hank Morgan, as he detects an abstractarrangement of several black spheres alignedalong the faintly glowing horizon at daybreak, animage recalling a Modernist charcoal caricatureby Marius de Zayas or a Robert MotherwellElegy. Is it Hank’s imagination that transfiguresthe row of bobbing dark dots into the helmetsof a steadily advancing army of knights? Hankstrains his eyes in the dim light to look asobjectively as possible, but what does he see?

When it comes to drawings, disciplinedlooking – the systematic gathering of visualinformation – is a pre-requisite to seeing – thesynthesis of the data that the eyes (sometimesenhanced by a magnification, alternate lightsources or instrumental analysis) have recorded, supplemented by historical documentation, biographical information, stylistic comparisonand a dash of Hank’s imagination thrown in forgood measure. Devoted enthusiasts realize thatthe exercise of intense looking at drawings is anindispensable aspect of connoisseurship. Thislooking phase, like Josef Meder’s hyper-vision,is critical in order to accurately identify originalmaterials, techniques, former function and

condition. It cannot be skipped over in a rushto arrive at an attribution or to announce a newdiscovery, a lesson hard-won by many collectors, curators and conservators. Senses other thaneyesight have been evoked when describing howone comes to see a drawing, for example, thesense of hearing. Color chemist A. H. Munselldraws the analogy between reading musicalnotation and then hearing music whendistinguishing colors, which brings to mindKonrad Oberhuber’s parallel observation thata drawing is like a person’s handwriting whichspeaks to us in a regional dialect. ConservatorsElizabeth Lunning and Roy Perkinson onlyhalf-jokingly recommend using all five senseswhen looking at drawings.

But at no time are the rewards of employingthe senses in the enjoyment and understandingof drawings better demonstrated than duringMaster Drawings New York. Now in its fifthyear, Master Drawings New York is an eagerlyanticipated week filled with the wares oftwenty-five dealers, who present a carefullyhoned selection of stock for our deliberation anddelectation. While we attend to the business oflooking, they provide beautiful and comfortablesurroundings, refreshing cocktails and delicioushors d’oeuvres. Knowledgeable experts proffercopies of Lügt, loupes and bulging file folders. All five senses are thus well-served duringMaster Drawings New York, affording us theluxury to sharpen a sixth – our imagination.

Reflections on Master Drawings Week, New York“You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”MARK TWA I N
