EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE FOR GOD

To many of us, on occasions, the steady gaze of someone else on us can be an uneasy experience! It can be even more so when we ‘have something to hide’. But we can draw great hope from the example of Jesus in today’s Gospel. Responding to the young man who had just affirmed his adherence to the tenets of the Law we are told that ‘Jesus looked steadily at him’. With that gaze, the Lord identified the one thing that was proving an obstacle to his growing in faith and service of the Lord—his attachment and dependence upon his wealth. Whilst he strove to fulfil the commandments of God, he failed to surrender himself to His providence, preferring the ‘proven’ security of his riches. But despite this weakness, we are told that when the Lord looked into the young man’s heart and soul, He ’loved him’. The Lord does not reject person who is weak, or who is a sinner, but loves that person.

Loving the young man, however, Jesus does not leave him where he is, but calls him to confront this weakness—to sell his possessions and give to the poor, ’then, come, follow me.’ That the Lord is correct in his diagnosis is clear from the young man’s sadness. That the story ends in this sadness is our normal supposition—for he ‘went away’.

However, we are perhaps rushing to an unwarranted conclusion! Whilst it may seem to us that the obstacle in the young man’s path is unsurmountable for him, in the next paragraph the Lord assures us, that God can overcome all such obstacles. The love of God can soften the heart of stone—the security of knowing His love can bring a profound freedom. Not just to the rich young man—but to us too!

With every blessing, Fr Mark

THE WORD OF GOD Mark 10:17-30

Jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him and put this question to him, 'Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You must not kill; You must not commit adultery; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness; You must not defraud; Honour your father and mother.' And he said to him, 'Master, I have kept all these from my earliest days.' Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him, and he said, 'There is one thing you lack. Go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' But his face fell at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.

Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have rich-es to enter the kingdom of God!' The disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them, 'how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' They were more astonished than ever. 'In that case,' they said to one another, 'who can be saved?' Jesus gazed at them. 'For men,' he said, 'it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is possible for God.'

Peter took this up. 'What about us?' he asked him. We have left everything and fol-lowed you.' Jesus said, 'I tell you solemnly, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, chil-dren and land - not without persecution - now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life

REFLECTION After the initial discussion about eternal life, Jesus addresses an issue which has always faced Christians. Are riches an obstacle to faith? Jesus' answer is that riches can be an impediment to the life of a disciple. The astonishment of the disciples aris-es from the belief that material prosperity is a reward from God. Jesus does not seem to share this view.

Instead, Jesus maintains that material possessions may well be an obstacle to sal-vation. For this reason Christians are invited 'to leave everything'. If this is not possi-ble they should ensure that whatever they possess and whatever power they have is used for the good of others. The real enemy is selfishness. It is selfishness that kills love.

What is my attitude to my material possessions?

Do I allow selfishness to dominate my life, or any part of it?

Let us pray for those who have left everything in order to serve Christ.

Let us pray for wisdom and courage as we seek to live in a similar way

ST EDMUND’S SCHOOL have three vacancies for teaching staff. * A Teaching Assistant, Grade 3, 18 hrs a week, Wed, Thur, Fri; * Early Years Class Teacher, permanent from January, 0.8; * Year 4 Class Teacher full time from January. Class room teachers will be based at St Edmund’s but may be required to work at St Joseph’s. Closing date Monday 12th October. Contact Maria Kemble on 755141 or [email protected] for more information.

TODAY IS PRISONERS’ SUNDAY when, as a Church, we are asked to pray especially for those who are affected by impris-onment. It is estimated that 200,000 children are affected by parental imprisonment across England and Wales. Often when a Parent is imprisoned the children are twice as likely to experience behavioural and mental health

problems and are less likely to do well at school. The Catholic charity, The Prison Advice & Care Trust (PACT) works with Prisoners, their families, and with ex-offenders once they have been released. You can support their work by praying continually for Prisoner’s and their dependants or by volunteering your time to help those affected by imprisonment (visit prisonadvice.org.uk/get-involved) or by donating to the retiring collection today.

YOUNG CATHOLIC SPANISH TEACHER, is looking for a room in which to stay until July, near the town centre. Please phone 625329 if you can help.
