Message from Fr Jeremy Mensaje del Padre Jeremías

I read somewhere recently that our prayer is best when we learn to spend time with God unselfconsciously. Adam and Eve did this before their great sin. They walked naked in the garden with God and were simply themselves. They weren’t self conscious about being naked. They just enjoyed being with God.

We have to learn to be ourselves in prayer. No faking it! We have to learn to enjoy prayer. No rushing it!

We all have a tendency in prayer to be too aware of ourselves and of our needs and our expectation. If we could just forget ourselves for a moment, forget that we are naked before God and just enjoy being with Him, our prayer would be both transformative and enjoyable.

The trouble is that we are very aware of our unworthiness be-fore God, of our sin and of our shame. And whilst it is good and important to know ourselves, it is more important to be aware that God knows everything about us anyway and loves us just the same.

I cannot know what God thinks but I like to think that maybe God enjoys hanging out with us and He wants us to enjoy it also. We all have different ways to unwind: sport, reading, glass of wine. Does not hanging out with the coolest man to walk this earth seem attractive?

There are many ways to pray and no one way is more correct than another. But I think for me, the real sign of whether I am praying in my life or not is this: when the desire to pray more is still with me. If I don’t want to pray or I avoid it, this is a sure sign I have forgotten how cool it is hang out with God.

Recientemente, yo leí en algún lugar que nuestra oración es mejor cuando nosotros aprendemos a pasar tiempo con Dios inconscientemente. Adán y Eva hicieron esto antes de su gran pecado. Ellos caminaban desnudos en el jardín con Dios y simplemente eran ellos mismos. No estaban conscientes de su desnudez. Ellos simplemente disfrutaban estar con Dios.

Nosotros tenemos que aprender a ser nosotros mismos en la oración. ¡No fingir! Tenemos que aprender a disfrutar la oración. ¡No apresurarse!

Todos nosotros tenemos la tendencia cuando oramos a estar muy conscientes de nosotros mismos y de nuestras necesidades y de nuestra expectativa. Si tan sólo pudiéramos olvidarnos por un momento de nosotros mismos, olvidarnos de que estamos desnudos ante Dios y simplemente disfrutar estar con Él, nuestra oración sería ambas, transformativa y agradable.

El problema es que estamos muy conscientes de que no somos dignos ante Dios, de nuestro pecado y de nuestra vergüenza. Y mientras que es bueno e importante conocernos a nosotros mis-mos, es más importante estar conscientes de que Dios sabe todo acerca de nosotros de cualquier manera y nos ama exactamente lo mismo.

Yo no puedo saber lo que Dios piensa, pero me gusta pensar que tal vez Dios disfruta pasar tiempo con nosotros y Él quiere que nosotros lo disfrutemos también. Todos tenemos maneras diferentes de relajarnos: deportes, leer, un vaso de vino. ¿No les parece atractivo pasar tiempo con el hombre más buena onda que ha caminado en la tierra?

Hay muchas maneras de orar y ninguna es más correcta que otra. Pero yo pienso para mí, la verdadera señal de que yo estoy orando en mi vida o no, es esta: cuando el deseo de orar más está todavía conmigo. Si yo no quiero orar o yo lo evito, esta es una señal segura de que yo he olvidado qué buena onda es pasarla con Dios.

Welcome to Deacon Miguel Ángel Venegas. Originally from Jalisco in México, Miguel is a deacon of Chicago and will be ordained priest in May. Three Missions Today we begin with one of the “servant songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright © J. S. Tres Misiones Hoy comenzamos con una de las “cantos del siervo” del libro de Isaías, una canto profético sobre el ministerio de servicio de Jesús. La misión de Isaías no sólo es lograr que los hijos de Jacob se reúnan en Israel, sino también es convertirse en “una luz de las naciones” (Isaías 49:6). Jesucristo, como servidor, será el cumplimiento de la antigua profecía y la base de la nueva. Este domingo comenzamos una serie de lecturas de la carta de san Pablo a los corintios. Aquí se define a Pablo de acuerdo a su misión: es un apóstol de Jesucristo. La Iglesia en Corinto a quien se dirige en su carta también se define: es parte de la Iglesia universal de Dios. Los corintios, como todos los cristianos, son llamados a la santidad. Aunque la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor se celebró el domingo pasado, el Evangelio de hoy también alude a la importancia de dicho acontecimiento. La lectura enfatiza que Jesús “tiene precedencia” sobre Juan: su bautismo en el Espíritu erradicará el pecado. Jesús acepta el bautismo de Juan, a pesar de que él mismo es el Cordero de Dios. Catholic Schools Week Open Houses at NCA January 29 In honor of National Catholic Schools Week, Northside Catholic Academy will be hosting Open Houses at both campuses on Sunday, January 29.
