MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time At the Offertory this week we sing the famous hymn “Lead, Kindly Light.” This hymn is associated with two giants of Catholicism. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) wrote the text in 1833, in a poem titled “the Pillar of Cloud.” We sing the hymn to a tune written by A. Gregory Murray (1905-1992). Dom Gregory Murray, OSB, an organist and composer, was an authori-ty on chant, but also contributed by writing familiar vernacular settings of the Mass, like “the People’s Mass.” He was educated at Westminster Cathedral Choir School, and in 1923 became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. He read for the historical tripos at Cambridge University, graduating in 1929. He was ordained in 1932 for Downside Abbey and spent most of the rest of his life there. A brilliant organist, he was heard regularly in BBC broadcasts from the Compton organ at Downside Abbey. Regarding the origin of the text, as a young priest, Newman became sick while in Italy and was unable to travel for almost three weeks. In his own words: Before starting from my inn, I sat down on my bed and began to sob bitterly. My servant, who had acted as my nurse, asked what ailed me. I could only answer, "I have a work to do in England." I was aching to get home, yet for want of a vessel I was kept at Palermo for three weeks. I began to visit the churches, and they calmed my impatience, though I did not attend any services. At last I got off in an orange boat bound for Marseilles. We were becalmed for whole week in the Straits of Bonifacio, and it was there that I wrote the lines, Lead, Kindly Light, which have since become so well known. Fr. Rutler recounts, “Newman’s sister, Harriet, thought that he had the potential to become another Paganini, although we assume not in every detail. Newman took up the violin at the age of ten and performed for his Oxford colleagues, for the near destitute chil-dren of Littlemore, in his Oratory school, and alone, even composing for a comic opera. He writes in The Idea of a University: ‘Music, I suppose … has an object of its own … it is the expression of ideas greater and more profound than any in the visible world, ideas, which center indeed in Him whom Catholicism manifests, who is the seat of all beauty, order, and perfection whatever, still ideas after all which are not those on which Revelation directly and principally fixes our gaze.’” For the postlude, we travel to Italy as well with the Italian Renaissance organist and composer Antonio Valente (fl. 1565–80). He was blind from childhood and served as organist of Sant’Angelo a Nilo in Naples in 1565–80. During that time he published two collections of keyboard music: Intavolatura de cimbalo (1 fantasia, 6 ricercares, Salve regina, 3 intabulations, 6 sets of variations, and 3 dances; 1575) and Versi spirituali (43 versets; 1580). Valente's second collection is historically important as one of the earliest instances of liturgical music free from any ties with the chant (and right after the Council of Trent, though it is modal like chant). Versi spirituali provides a wealth of diverse, freely composed pieces that cover the entire liturgy—the Mass and the Daily Offices. I’m trying to find more of his manuscripts, but really I should be doing research in Napoli!

MOSTLY MOZART AT THE BASILICA

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the

Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through

them will benefit from indulgences and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s

mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola.

For those in a state of grace a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes

all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrimage at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. The pilgrim then may

proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

What are Infancy Narratives in the Gospels?

The Cardinals’ Appeal is an annual campaign to raise funds throughout the Archdiocese to support the wide array of services and programs that serve people in need.

During this year of Mercy, it is more important than ever to be actively aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters in need. The Cardinal’s Appeal addresses a wide range of human needs in neighborhoods of the Archdiocese. Many people and whole families are in crisis due to changes in economy as well as challenges that come to them through illness or accidents. In addition, the Cardinal’s Appeal assist in the education of youngsters and the care for older people who have become frail, including nuns and priests.

GOAL The Cardinal has asked our parish to raise $47,000. As of last Friday, we are at $37,255. This amount has been pledged by only 66 people! Next Sunday, you will be asked to participate in this important effort by making a gift of whatever amount you can afford. Keep in mind, that the responsibility to care for those in need is everybody’s job.

You can make a gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal by using a pledge card provided or by going to the website at www.cardinalsappeal.org. Don’t forget to use our designated number ( #94) when you make you gift.

FR. VALMORE MANTOVANI is a Pastor of a parish near Venice, Italy. He will be with us

while he vacations here during the month of July.

Tuesday, June 28 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM Parish House ~ 263 Mulberry Street

As an introduction to studying the New Testament, this session will focus on “The Infancy Narratives” in the Gospels of Mat-

thew and Luke. The issues of Inspiration, Canonization, Authorship will be reviewed as well as an overview of how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke came to be so similar and

yet so different.

COMING IN THE FALL A three-session course called “An Introduction to the New Tes-tament”. Students will meet on one evening for three consecu-tive weeks (dates to be determined). The course will provide a

foundation for further exploration into the other parts of the Bible such as the Pentateuch, Prophets, Psalms, Gospels, Acts, Letters, Revelation. This three-session course will be repeated

three or four times during the year in order to attract newcomers to Bible study.

Meanwhile, there will be other courses on the Bible for people who have completed the “Introduction” or who have enough of a foundation to take mini-courses on the sections of the Bible

mentioned in the paragraph above.

BULLETIN NEWS – JUNE 25-26, 2016 DONATION REQUESTS: Another of our Little Italy merchants has responded to our letter asking them to support our church. We would like to thank CASA BELLA RESTAURANT for its gener-ous donation this past week. As we did with our other benefactors, we pray blessings come their way in whatever form they need, whether personal or business related. We encourage our parishioners and visitors to Little Italy to patronize our benefactors. Actually, we encourage you to patronize all the restaurants and businesses in Little Italy. As a result, perhaps the reverse will happen; when the businesses do well, they in turn can (and will, we hope) send in a donation to our church. As we’ve mentioned in the past, we are here to help each other. We thank all those who have already done their part to support Most Precious Blood Church. In the words of the late Cardinal O’Connor when he visited us and consecrated our new altar a number of years ago: “Most Precious Blood Church is the jewel of Little Italy”. Let’s work together to keep our “jewel” active and vibrant. SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA’S ‘VISIT’: Most Precious Blood Church has its own first-class relic in the form of a piece of Saint Antho-ny’s bone which we display for the duration of our 13-week novena of Masses in his honor. This past June 16th, we were blessed to have anoth-er first-class relic of Saint Anthony visit our church. This relic was in the form of layers of Saint Anthony’s skin and came directly from the Saint Anthony Shrine in Padua, Italy. Prayer petitions were collected and are being taken back to the Shrine in Italy by Father Paolo who resides there. For anyone who was not able to submit their prayer petitions last week, you can send them directly to:

The Anthonian Association Saint Anthony Drive Mt. St. Francis, Indiana 47146 It was explained to us by Tom Muscatello, a representative of the Anthonian Association, that the relic visits the United States approximate-ly four times per year. Hopefully, we will get to see it again when it re-turns, either here or at a church in the vicinity. It was indeed an honor for Most Precious Blood Church to host such a treasure if only for a few hours. WEEKLY SAN GENNARO MASSES: Please remember that we have Mass every Wednesday at 12:10PM in honor of San Gennaro, the Patron Saint of Naples, Italy and permanent resident in our National Shrine bear-ing his name. Please spread the word. MPB SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB: With the 13-week Saint Anthony novena behind us, our weekday Mass has changed to Wednesdays for San Gennaro. Therefore, our weekly coffee social will also move to Wednes-days. There is also the possibility that our monthly senior citizens’ lunch-eon will go back to Wednesday, but this is still under discussion. We know these changes will upset some people and we sincerely apologize in advance for disappointing you. If there is a change regarding the monthly luncheon, we will announce it here in plenty of time before July’s ‘event’.
