An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. O Mary, Mother of Divine Love, protect and lead us to

the heart of your Son, now and always. Amen.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Jn 14:27

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with a heavy and troubled heart that I write this reflection; knowing that I could be walking into a quagmire filled with religion, politics and civil rights and yet, as a Christian and as a priest, I feel compelled to say something. As I reflect on the difficult situations that Jesus found himself and how he dealt with them, the one thing I realize is he did not shy away from them.

Jesus had set the scene at the early age of 12 when he stayed back in Jerusalem without his parent’s knowledge (Lk 2:41-52). Why was that? Did he fear that his parents would not have let him, or they would not understand? What we do know is he did stay in Jerusalem and was in the temple questioning and challenging authority. Let us stop and pause at the woman who was found committing adultery (Jn 8:1-11) – again Jesus challenged authority on how they applied laws on certain people and how hypocritical they were by ignoring their own sins/crimes.

Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4:1-42), challenging religious and social standards, norms, and laws. The woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair (Lk 7:36-50) and the Pharisee said, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” Jesus answers with a parable about two people in debt, one owed a large amount, the other a small amount, both debts were forgiven – Jesus asks, which of the two were most grateful?

Am I saying here that Jesus always takes the side of the sinner/the wrong doer? No I am not. What Jesus challenges us to do is to look deeper and find out why they do what they do and if you can alleviate the cause, then there is a better chance of alleviating the crime. Jesus’ take on things seems to be that people would not do what they do if life/circumstances were different.

The woman accused of adultery, in Jesus’ eyes, was more the victim than the perpetrator. The Samaritan woman at the well was a victim of bigotry because of the decisions others made affecting the relationship between Jews and Samaritans. And the woman who washed Jesus’ feet, we do not know what her public sins were, but they were great and plentiful, and Jesus said they were forgiven— that is why she was experiencing such joy.

Dear friends, what is our role as Christians, ambassadors for Christ? How are we to react or respond to the present situation in America? Do we jump on a political bandwagon or do we take a side to the detriment of the other side? How would Jesus deal with this situation? I think the above examples gives us some insight into how Jesus would respond to this crisis but I feel his presence before Pilot gives us an even better insight, “… I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.” (Jn 18:37) Friends, this is our calling, our mission from Christ, to always seek the truth, witness to the truth and defend the truth. Let us, like Christ, be compassionate and let us leave the judgement to the Father:

Repay no one evil for evil but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. (Rm 12:17-21)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your

hearts be troubled or afraid.” Jn 14:27 Fr. Ma in

Once we return to our daily activities many will be looking to our donation to help return them recover from what they’ve lost. “So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I sure you, they have already been paid in full. But when you help a needy person, do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it. Then it will be a private matter. And your Father, who sees what you do in private will reward you.” (Matthew 6:2-4)

DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION - DRIVE-TO INSTRUCTIONS Dear Friends,

Many of you have heard of parishes having parking lot Masses and some dioceses having limited number at-tending Mass in the church. Many of us are eager to receive Christ in the Eucharist. Last Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, we held a drive-to and receive the Holy Communion at both St. Mary Church and Holy Assumption. HERE IS HOW IT WORKS: 1. Rise and dress as if you were going to Church 2. As a family, please watch the livestream Mass together in your home 3. After Mass ends get in your car and come to the Church to receive Holy Communion (those receiving need to be at their own car window and not able to exit the car) 4. There will be a Holy Communion station at each Church 5. Before receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer Before Receiving Communion’ in the car together 6. After receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer After Receiving Communion’ together in the car. (Prayers found on following page.) Holy Communion will be distributed 15 minutes after Mass has completed, thus giving you time to drive over to the respective Church. First and foremost I ask for your patience in all this - this is not like a concert where there are a limited number of tickets and one feels the need to sleep out all night to be in line with a chance of getting a ticket. There will be Holy Communion for all who want to receive and for whatever length of time it takes. Receiving Holy Communion at St Mary Church, Bordentown – following the 9:30am Mass Enter our parking lot off of Crosswicks Street nearest the Church, coming in the direction from Route 130 or from the school. Please do not try and enter our parking lot coming from Farnsworth Ave as that could cause a backup of traffic at the Church entrance - all other entrances will be closed off. Please follow the directions of the stewards. *Please have the preprinted Holy Communion prayers mentioned in 5 and 6 above. Recite the ‘Prayer Before Communion’ together aloud before receiving Communion. Once you receive, please have one member of the family recite the ‘Prayer After Communion’ as you leave the parking lot. If you are alone, please pray the prayer when you are safely able to do so. Receiving Holy Communion at Holy Assumption, Roebling – following the 11am Mass Go to Parish Lane Road, the road running alongside the Church and the Charter School, leading to Holy Assumption Cemetery. Drive toward the Cemetery and a Holy Communion station will be in placed in the Cemetery. Please follow the instructions of the stewards.

PLEASE DO NOT PRE-PARK BEFORE OR DURING MASS THAT’S UNFAIR AND UNNECESSARY!

Please, let us all pray the Mass together in our homes and as a family let us gather together to receive the Eucharist. Please spread the word to those who are not on Facebook or have no access to the website. God’s grace love and blessings to you and all your loved ones. Fr Martin
