HEADLINES

This 4W/E total Beer and Cider volume as a whole is up 1.8%, with Ale

the only sub category that is in decline, Stout showing the biggest

increase.

The decline of Ale is mainly being driven through the Independent

Grocer (-12.4%) and Symbols (-5.4%) channels. However it is showing

growth in both Convenience +1.1% and Convenience Multiples +8.0%

areas.

• Lidl was the fastest growing retailer (TOTAL GROCERY), seeing a 16.3% sales increase. This has mainly been driven by growth in branded lines, which now account for 12% of all sales.

• Aldi was not far behind Lidl, recording +16.2% growth (TOTAL GROCERY) driven by shopper gains (penetration up +8.7%).

• Households saved on average £63.04 in January versus December, where sales across premium own-label ranges nearly halved.

• Despite customer backlash from the unpopular changes to Club card rewards, Tesco recorded the strongest growth (+2.6% YOY) of the Big 4.

• Alcohol was the fastest growing category in Asda and also contributed positively to Co-op growth for the first time since last summer.

The growth of Stout is being heavily driven through the Independent

Grocers channels +37.2%, but also through Symbols +17.0% and

Convenience +13.1%.

Lager is in growth across all channels with even levels across all

sectors. And Cider is also performing well across all sectors, bar

Symbols (-5.3%)

More than 70% of people who take

part in Dry January continue to drink

less six months later, with 62% of

participants sleeping better and 49%

losing weight.

It is also better for the purse strings

after the excesses of Christmas, as

79% of past participants reported

Low and no alcohol beers are increasingly becoming the drink

of choice for many people. Drinkers encouraged by moderation

now have a greater selection of low and no beers to choose

from. This year some of the bigger breweries have released 0%

ABV lagers in the low and non alcoholic beer sector, which is

predicted to be worth £300m a year within the next 10 years

when it will account for 5% of the overall beer market.

to make sure drinking is as harmless as

possible, and look for credentials they associate

with being healthier, such as claims of ethical

sourcing or organic origin.

Five Years From Now

Due to interest in healthier lifestyles,

consumers opt for lower-ABV alcohol or cut

down on it altogether.

Lidl the UK’s Fastest Growing Supermarket

Lidl once again was crowned the UK's fastest-growing retailer. The discounter experienced a market share increase of 0.5 percentage points and saw sales

climb by 16.3% compared to this time last year. Fraser McKevitt explains: "Traditionally focused on own-label lines, Lidl has actually seen fastest growth among

its branded products, which are up by 28% and now account for 12% of all sales. Not to be outdone, Aldi also increased sales by 16.2% to hold a market share of

6.9% - up 0.7 percentage points. Aldi experienced particular success with its premium 'Specially Selected' range, which saw sales climb by £26 million."

Although its market share fell by 0.3 percentage points to 27.8%, Tesco still remains the fastest growing of the big four, with sales up by 2.6%. Despite

shoppers increasingly opting for vegan options, such as the grocer's new 'Wicked Kitchen' range, Tesco saw the greatest sales growth from its dairy and

produce lines.

Asda and Morrisons both experienced sales growth of 2.2%, though lost market share, each down 0.2 percentage points compared to this time last year. Asda

encouraged shoppers to add extra items to their baskets while customers made an additional five million trips to Morrisons compared to this time last year.

An extra 311,000 shoppers chose to shop at Sainsbury's, with shoppers particularly engaging with the supermarket's Local convenience stores and online offer.

Sales at the grocer increased by 1.5% despite market share falling by 0.3 percentage points to 16.2%.

Still feeling the effect of selling nearly 300 stores to McColls, Co-op's market share dropped by 0.2 percentage points to stand at 5.8%, having experienced

sales growth of -0.1%. Waitrose grew overall sales by 1.5% but saw market share fall by 0.1 percentage points.

Iceland experienced its 23rd period of consecutive growth - a run dating back to May 2016 - with sales up by 1.6%. Amid the news that the supermarket plans to

remove plastic from all its own-label products by 2023, Iceland held market share steady at 2.3%.

Internet-only retailer Ocado continued its rapid sales growth - up 7.8% - to hold market share at 1.3%.
