Thank you so much to all members of our Marriotts school family: students, parents, carers and staff. We’ve had an incredible time over the last 12 months and the school has moved forward significantly. These successes include being oversubscribed in Year 7 for next year, doubling our Sixth Form numbers, recruiting some great candidates to add to our fantastic staff team, significant improvements in teaching and learning, in raising attainment, in attendance and punctuality and behaviour for learning, plus the provision of many more trip, rewards and opportunities for our students. As well as the great support we received from you, our families and students we’ve also formed some great partnerships with the Humanutopia group, Stevenage Football Club and the Meller Educational Trust. Thank you also, as ever, to the Local Authority and our Governing Body for advice and help. As you can see from this newsletter there has been a lot going on over the last half term: brilliant sporting events, with several students breaking records or winning medals at County and District Championships as well as students being complimented on their excellent behaviour and conduct when representing the school. We have had excellent concerts and performing arts productions including Marriotts winning a national award for staging in the Rock Challenge competition. Marriotts students led a Humanutopia event for Hertfordshire schools held at the University of Hertfordshire and we launched our Student Athlete Programme with Stevenage Football Club. Our Back to Zero initiative gave lots of students the chance to improve their conduct and make a fresh start and many students have made significant progress. Attendance and lateness have improved dramatically due to our new attendance team and I know you will support this by ensuring that next year your child will attend school, on time, every day. More and more students are receiving good and outstanding MTL grades and it is great to see so many people doing well. It was also wonderful to see so many of our students receive awards at Presentation Evening, awarded by the Mayor of Stevenage. I would like to pass on my personal thanks to all of our teachers and support staff for their incredible work this year and in particular would like to pass on our heartfelt gratitude to those staff that are leaving at the end of the year. Some of our lovely Canadian teachers are moving back home and I would like to thank them for everything they have contributed to this school. Several of our Maths team are moving on to pastures new and we wish them the best of luck. Mr Christian Williams is going travelling to Canada and we are sure he will have a fantastic trip. Finally we would like to thank Mrs Stafford, Mrs Ingle and Mr Greenacre for their long service to the school and we hope that they have a fulfilling retirement. Mr Greenacre deserves a special mention following 30 years of commitment to Marriotts School. Can I please draw all parents’ attention to the end of term and start of term arrangements outlined on page 2 and to our Year 6 Open Evening event which will take place on Tuesday 30 th September. Please encourage friends and family to come along and see the new Marriotts. We expect to be full again next year.

Dear parents, carers, students and staff

What a Year! Thank you so

much to all members of our

Marriotts school family:

students, parents, carers and

staff. We’ve had an

incredible time over the last

12 months and the school has moved forward

significantly. These successes include being

oversubscribed in Year 7 for next year, doubling

our Sixth Form numbers, recruiting some great

candidates to add to our fantastic staff team,

significant improvements in teaching and

learning, in raising attainment, in attendance and

punctuality and behaviour for learning, plus the

provision of many more trip, rewards and

opportunities for our students. As well as the

great support we received from you, our families

and students we’ve also formed some great

partnerships with the Humanutopia group,

Stevenage Football Club and the Meller

Educational Trust. Thank you also, as ever, to the

Local Authority and our Governing Body for

advice and help.

As you can see from this newsletter there has

been a lot going on over the last half term:

brilliant sporting events, with several students

breaking records or winning medals at County

and District Championships as well as students

being complimented on their excellent behaviour

and conduct when representing the school. We

have had excellent concerts and performing arts

productions including Marriotts winning a

national award for staging in the Rock Challenge

competition. Marriotts students led a

Humanutopia event for Hertfordshire schools

held at the University of Hertfordshire and we

launched our Student Athlete Programme with

Stevenage Football Club.

Our Back to Zero initiative gave lots of students

the chance to improve their conduct and make a

fresh start and many students have made

significant progress. Attendance and lateness

have improved dramatically due to our new

attendance team and I know you will support this

by ensuring that next year your child will attend

school, on time, every day. More and more

students are receiving good and outstanding MTL

grades and it is great to see so many people doing

well. It was also wonderful to see so many of our

students receive awards at Presentation Evening,

awarded by the Mayor of Stevenage.

I would like to pass on my personal thanks to all

of our teachers and support staff for their

incredible work this year and in particular would

like to pass on our heartfelt gratitude to those

staff that are leaving at the end of the year. Some

of our lovely Canadian teachers are moving back

home and I would like to thank them for

everything they have contributed to this school.

Several of our Maths team are moving on to

pastures new and we wish them the best of luck.

Mr Christian Williams is going travelling to

Canada and we are sure he will have a fantastic

trip. Finally we would like to thank Mrs Stafford,

Mrs Ingle and Mr Greenacre for their long service

to the school and we hope that they have a

fulfilling retirement. Mr Greenacre deserves a

special mention following 30 years of

commitment to Marriotts School.

Can I please draw all parents’ attention to the

end of term and start of term arrangements

outlined on page 2 and to our Year 6 Open

Evening event which will take place on Tuesday

We expect to be full again next year.

I hope that all of our students enjoy a safe, happy

HISTORY BATTLEFIELDS TRIP 11th - 12th JULY 2014

On Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July 32 Year 9 and 10 students embarked on a trip to Belgium to visit the battlefields of the First World War. The party of historians left Marriotts at 5am and arrived

at Ypres mid-morning and began with a visit to the Flanders Museum. This focused on the causes of war and had many fascinating exhibits showing the weapons and tactics used and the impact it had on the soldiers. This was followed by a visit to Hill 62 - Sanctuary Woods where students were able to see surviving trenches dug during the war itself. The evening allowed time for dinner and a visit to the Menin Gate at Ypres where our students joined with a further 5000 people and watched the moving "Last Post Ceremony" to commemorate the memory of the soldiers killed during the War. Incredibly this has taken place everyday since Ypres was reconstructed in the late 1920s. Day 2 commenced with a visit to the open Museum at Passchendaele where students were able to see reconstructed trenches and dugouts and experience the conditions soldiers endured. Students were then able to pay their respect to British and German soldiers by visiting the cemeteries at Tyne Cot and Langemark and by listening to a poetry reading of "In Flanders Fields" at the cemetery at Essex Farm. Students returned at 11pm on Saturday night. Tired but interested and enthused about the visit they certainly felt that the trip had them understanding better the impact of what was known as "The Great War". HUMANUTOPIA

Students from Marriotts School played a leading part in an event for over 200 people at the University of Hertfordshire under the

leadership of Humanutopia. The event was on Wednesday 11th June and The Leys Primary

School were also invited to join the session. All of the schools that participated have a link with the Meller Educational Trust. In preparation for the event Marriotts students had worked with Humanutopia to train young people to become the best leaders possible. Lynn Gadd, Chief Executive with the Meller Educational Trust said “I was incredibly impressed with the leadership skills that the Marriotts students displayed at the event at the University of Hertfordshire. They were delightfully confident and not in the least phased by working with a very wide age range of young people. I have no doubt that they will continue to use their excellent skills at school, university and the world of work”

Twelve Year 9

students were

chosen to take

part in the Sky

project earlier

this term to boost their motivation and to set

them up for working to a higher standard in Year

10. We were really excited to see Hannah Beharry

(Olympian Boxing Champion) and Tim Pendergast

(Paralympic gold medallist in the 800m, Athens

2004). We also have worked closely with

Stevenage Amateur Boxing Club with Jock Stanley

taking the lead in the delivery of the ASDAN

course for the six Aim Higher students. These six

students have taken part in an extended course

over the last half term.

During the sessions students have been taught

different skills e.g. mental agility, social and

communication skills and breaking barriers to

achieve.

All students have enjoyed the course and we

hope to see their skills being used to improve

‘IN HINDSIGHT’

On Friday 20th June

all Year 9 and 10

students had the

opportunity to

attend an

educational

workshop which

was presented by upcoming band, ‘In Hindsight’,

as part of their Life Skills and Drug Education

themed school tour. The band have been

travelling to various areas around the UK and

visited 40 schools in June. As well as a

performance for the students the band delivered

a Drug Education and Life Skills educational

message, supporting the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse

Resistance Education) programmes developed by

Life Skills Education C.I.C. ‘In Hindsight’ are a

young 3 piece pop/rock band from Nottingham,

consisting of brothers Michael (17 – vocals/bass)

Daniel (16 – drums/bvox), and Isaac (18 –

guitar/bvox). The band produce a polished pop

sound with influences drawn from mainstream

rock, allowing the band to maintain an interesting

edge making them accessible to all sorts of music

fans. Since forming in 2011, the band has played

all over the UK, including 2 full UK tours over

February 2013 and December 2013, supporting

acts such as FutureProof, The Wanted and James

Arthur along the way. They recently performed

on ITV’s This Morning.

SAINSBURY’S VOUCHERS Thank you to everyone who sent in their Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. This year we collected a fantastic 3404 vouchers. We have added this to the 2317 we had banked from last

year and ordered a team basketball kit and a set of water bottles.

YEAR 5 SPORTS AND SCIENCE AFTERNOON

On 3rd July the children from Year 5 at Peartree

Spring Junior School enjoyed an afternoon of

Sports and Science with us to help them with

their secondary transition. 72 children came and

enjoyed street surf, table tennis and gym

supported by our Marriotts Sports centre staff.

Following this they were shown some fantastic

chemistry experiments by Mr George and the

Science team. The Year 5 children thoroughly

enjoyed themselves and gave great indications

that it had helped them to look forward to

coming to secondary school. They all left to

return to their primary school with a Marriotts

Pencil case and happy faces!

YEAR 6 WEEK

What a fantastic week it has been for our new

year group joining us in September. On Monday

7thJuly we had the opportunity to meet our new

cohort of parents and students and the night was

extremely busy!

On Thursday 10th July we held the taster day, not

to be put off by strike day, staff were fully on

board to deliver a great, fun filled day. The Year 6

students enjoyed PE, Science and Drama, had a

fish and chip lunch, met lots of staff at the

assembly, received a goody bag for September

and even performed the Aim high. Work hard. Be

kind. Rap!

On Saturday 12th July we held a funday at the

Sports Centre for all new parents, we had a great

day with lovely weather and saw many students

and parent/carers enjoying the activities with

their children including table tennis and

basketball and some fitness sessions. We plan to

hold another funday session again soon.

END OF YEAR 11 Examinations Students have really risen to the challenges presented to them in Year 11 and have worked incredibly hard to ensure they get the results they need to move on. This has prompted a very high number of applications to the 6th Form at Marriotts and we are confident that the results in August will reflect the incredible effort students have made. Leavers' Assembly

The atmosphere in the Leavers' Assembly on July 4th was amazing. Staff and students were seen with tears in their eyes as we signed

shirts, said farewell to some and wished others a great summer holiday until we see them again in September. While giggling at the photos of our leavers when they were in year 7 we all had a chance to reflect on just how much they have changed and grown in such a short time.

Yr 11 Prom at Knebworth Barns

The photos of our Year 11 Prom capture the glamour and sparkle of the night beautifully; however it is very difficult to convey the atmosphere in a picture. Year 11 2014 came together to enjoy the event as a

year group. The event ran seamlessly with music and dancing all the way through the evening, teachers' awards as voted for by the students and protests at the end when we finally had to call an end to the evening. The 2014 Prom was the perfect send of for an incredible year group! GCSE results day – Thursday 21st August 9.00am

YEAR 12 UCAS FAIR As a part of our aim to raise aspirations in the Sixth Form we constantly strive to keep our curriculum and activities exciting and engaging for all students. Recently the whole of Year 12 were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend the UCAS Fair at Alexandra Palace in North London. Here there were stalls set up by Universities from all over the country which gave our students the chance to talk to current University students, class teachers and other Sixth Form students about University. It was an inspiring day for all as many students filled bags with prospectuses and students who beforehand had turned their noses up at the idea of University seemed to leave with a more positive and inspired attitude. On entering the fair memories from my time at University came flooding back and I was more than happy to talk with students explaining how amazing a University experience can be. I won’t lie, I was a little jealous... YEAR 12 INDUCTION WEEK The new year 12's are in! students are privileged to have their own Sixth Form block to study, socialise, revise and focus. A thousand mile journey begins with one step and last week we took that first step together. Students were welcomed in to the Sixth Form with tea, biscuits and refreshments before being delivered inspirational assemblies from Mr Illingworth, Head of Sixth Form, and Mr Winter, Assistant Headteacher. Students were engaged and seemed enthused to be part of a Sixth Form that is on the up. Over the week students were introduced to study skills, had the opportunity to participate in taster sessions, speak with subject teachers and get advice on what would best suit their career aspirations. We were also lucky enough to have guest speakers and visit Bedfordshire University for a tour, talks and a better look at what a students life may be like with the aim of raising aspirations again. Finally at the end of the week, students participated in the "Wise Up" event at Barnwell School. As part of a Sixth Form consortium we worked with the other Heads of Sixth Form to create a day of fun, problem solving and team bonding activities. Here students from all 4 schools had the opportunity to work together and get to know one another. It was a great week for all and we are very excited for September! Goodbye year 11, welcome year 12... GCE results day – Thursday 14th August 8.30am TEEN BOUNDARIES On Monday 14th July Year 10 spent the day with an outside group called ‘Teen Boundaries’. KEEP KIDS SAFE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

The following Keep Kids Safe contact numbers may be useful:- Absence Alert Text Number 07624 815175 This is the virtual mobile number from which absence alert SMS text messages are sent to parents/carers. Parents/carers who reply to absence alerts will send their texts to this number. Absence Hotline Number 08442 393197 This is the number parents call to access the automated Keep Kids Safe at School™ absence hotline. This number is quoted in Absence Alerts. Please use the above numbers to report your child’s absence or alternatively you can call the school on 01438 726999 (option 1 for Marriotts, followed by option 2 for the absence line). Group Messaging Text Number 07624 815174 This is the virtual mobile number from which Group SMS text messages are sent to parents/carers and the number to which your reply text will be sent. Keep Kids Safe Communication system

Keep Kids Safe is an automatic system that

generates a text if your child has not registered in

school before 9.15am.

Unfortunately, if you tell someone other than the

attendance officer that your child will be absent,

the message does not always get through before

the texts are sent.

For this reason we have a dedicated telephone

number for you to call 01438 726999 option 1

(Marriotts) and option 2 (absence).

As with any system, errors can be made and the

school apologises in advance if you receive a text

although you have reported your child absent.

EMERGENCY CLOSURE AND BAD WEATHER If we have very bad weather or other emergencies that prevent the school from opening, please listen for announcements on BOB

FM (106.7 and 106.9). InFormation will also be available at www.hertsdirect.org. Please note that although we will continue to notify local radio in the event of an emergency closure and will update the website as soon as we are able, our primary method of communication will be by text to the number identified as the primary parent/carer for each of the students in the school. As a result of this, it is essential that we have your up to date mobile phone number. If you are unsure whether or not you have notified us of your mobile number, please send a note to the school with your contact details and a request for your number to be checked on the system. Please discuss with your child what you would want them to do in the event of any sudden closure during the day, i.e. should they go to a designated friend’s house. This is especially important for students who do not live locally. CONTACT DETAILS It is vital that we have up to date contact inFormation for you on our database. We are sending most correspondence out electronically now, so you are inFormed immediately of current news/events. If we do not hold an email for Contact 1 then any correspondence home will be handed to your child via the register. Please visit the “Contact Us” page on www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk . This is one way of sending your new or updated details and we will amend upon receipt.
