Word of the Week As part of the school's drive to advance the reading skills of every student we are focusing on broadening vocabulary by teaching key academic words explicitly in class. To support this, we have introduced a 'Word of the Week' (WOW) that features key, high-frequency words used by all faculties across the school. The aim is to use these words as much as possible to ensure that the precise meaning is embedded to allow students to use these words accuracy in academic writing and talk in their subjects. Please support your child and the school by using this word at home and challenging your child to use it accurately. The WOW for w/c 4th March is: consequence

A result or effect.

Example: Every action has its consequence.

The Marriotts Way Learner Zone and Data drop. We are now through our 2nd term in the academic year and are rigorously tracking the students on their Approach to Learning (ATL) and their approach to The Marriotts Way expectations (attendance/punctuality/conduct/organisation). As a result, your son/daughter will be receiving their termly report within the next two weeks along with a breakdown of key data, their Marriotts Way Learner Zone will be identified on this report as usual. Following this report, a letter will also be sent out for those who have been identified as Orange/Pink/Red Zone learners. This will highlight the relevant actions, support and interventions we will be putting in place to ensure these standards are improved going forward into the Summer term. Students in the Blue and Green Zones will be receiving recognition and celebration within their year group for their continued success over Term 2. If you have any questions or queries about the termly report or Zone information, please contact your son/daughters’ Head of Year or Raising Standards Assistant Headteacher for the relevant year group to assist you.

UK Mathematical Trust – Intermediate Maths Challenge In early February 19 students from Marriotts participated in the United Kingdom Mathematical Trust "Intermediate Maths Challenge", an annual contest open to students in Years 9-11. The contest takes the form of an hour-long exam with questions that are a little different from those seen in GCSE and designed to test deep mathematical reasoning, fluency and lateral thinking. Following Marriotts’ entry into the Maths Challenge, we are delighted to share the following information with you. A Gold Certificate was awarded to Ethan who was recognised as one of the best participants in Year 9. Ethan has also been invited to take part in the “Grey Kangaroo” contest organised by “Kangourou sans Frontières”, an international organisation that promotes mathematics to young people around the world. A Gold Certificate was also awarded to Nathan who was recognised as one of the best-scoring participants in the competition earning himself a place in this year’s Mathematical Olympiad. Congratulations also to Amanda-Ann for earning a Silver Certificate and to Andi, Ben, Conor, Owen, Morgan, Alex, Kieran and Ayaan who each earned a Bronze Certificates. Marriotts had a very strong team and all students should feel proud of their achievements. Everyone who attended will also receive a ‘Certificate of Participation’. We would like to wish Ethan and Nathan good luck for their upcoming contests and hope that our junior mathematicians will see a similar level of success in their events during March.

Cycling to school Please ensure that if your child brings a bike to school, they must padlock their bike up individually in the bike sheds. Some students are not padlocking up their bikes, but are relying on the bike sheds being locked during the day. This poses a problem at the end of the day when the bike shed is unlocked and bikes are not padlocked and therefore not protected. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Sport Year 7 Netball Yesterday our year 7 netballers' took part in a B team tournament. They won their first two games convincingly beating both Priory and Highfield, 8-3 and 3-0. In their final game they faced a strong Knights Templar team who proved too challenging to beat and Marriotts lost 3-1. I am very proud of the girls for representing Marriotts in their first competition, their behaviour was impeccable throughout and they showed a positive attitude in every game. They are a dedicated groups of girls who are beginning to progress and play some lovely netball. Please congratulate the following; Tala C, Abbie H, Mollie H, Lola S, Grace B, Hannah C and Clemmie C
