Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am.

The section on marriage may itself be divided into two. In the first part Jesus

is engaged in public argument with the Pharisees, in the second he answers his

disciples in private. In response to the Pharisees’ question Jesus quotes from

the second creation story in Genesis to reaffirm God’s original intention that

marriage be a life-long commitment. In contrast with other New Testament

writers (see Mt 5:32, 1 Cor. 7:10-16), Mark makes no reference to any

exceptions to the norm.

Jesus’ teaching provokes the disciples to seek clarification. His reply remains absolute but is remarkable for the

way it puts husband and wife on an equal footing. The question of how to interpret and apply Jesus’ teaching in

our time is challenging and controversial.

ON THE JOURNEY TOGETHER – THE SYNOD ON THE FAMILY

I have arrived in Rome for the Synod of Bishops on the Family in the Modern World. I’ve worked very hard to prepare for it and, now that I’m here, I’m looking forward to it very much.

People keep asking me what do you think will happen at the Synod? All I can say is: “I’m not sure”. I think we could be in for surprises. The Holy Spirit is like that.

No one saw the Second Vatican Council coming and I hope, at least, we’re in for a few surprises at this

Synod. Because, if we just say the same things in the same way, why bother with having two Synods as Pope Francis has decided we’ll have?

We’re on a journey together and it’s a journey of discovery. It’s not just about marriage and the family. That’s where the rubber hits the road. But it’s also about the Church and how the Church relates to the

modern world. Because in some ways we’re drifting apart. And that’s not the Catholic way. The Catholic way is to engage.

So, how can we as the Church engage the modern world and how seriously can we as the Church take history and all that history throws up to us? So, there are big questions caught up in this Synod but there are also those intimate questions concerning marriage and the

family.

So I invite all of you to surround us Bishops here in Rome with your prayer through the next three weeks. - Archbishop Mark Coleridge

is a new Senior’s Community being planned on the land surrounding the Holy Spirit Church, Auchenflower.

The Parish has investigated options to create an amenity for the community and has started the planning process with Greengate

Retirement Villages. The approach is to engage the local community, to listen to the local seniors and learn about what is

important in the creation of the new village.

For those wanting more information or who have any questions Cheryl and Alison from Greengate will be available after 6pm Mass Sat. 17 October & 7am and 5pm Masses on Sunday 18 October.

AATTENTIONTTENTION TOTO PPARISHARISH TTHANKSGIVINGHANKSGIVING PPROGRAMMEROGRAMME CCONTRIBUTORSONTRIBUTORS ANDAND NNEWEW PPARISHIONERSARISHIONERS

The new Thanksgiving cycle commences THIS WEEKEND— 4 October.

New envelopes for all contributors will be left in both churches for collection from THIS weekend until Sunday 11 October. NB. Credit Card and Direct Debit patrons — if you don’t wish to use envelopes, please leave them in the trays for return to the Parish Office.

Income from Thanksgiving envelopes supports the Clergy and Parish Staff, as well as helping to fund parish loans, repair and maintenance, new resources, Archdiocesan levies, insurance premiums, liturgical and administration expenses.

So far this year expenditure has centred on general maintenance and minor improvements to all parish properties. However, special mention is made of extensive tree pruning at Holy Spirit church; major pest control measures and eradication of termites and vermin again at Manresa presbytery & parish centre became a priority and were completed. Early in the plumbing repairs and lighting upgrades were carried out at St Ignatius Church. Lift call outs and servicing were a regular expense early this year but have stabilised at present. Major roof and guttering repairs and replacement of Solarhart hot-water system will be carried out later this year at Manresa/Parish Centre. Some important parish projects may be considered in the 2015/16 budget cycle, ie. costing an upgrade of electrical wiring and fittings at St Ignatius church/hall. Minor repairs and changes were actioned early in 2015 following the Archdiocesan WH&S audit of all parish properties late last year.

We wish to acknowledge the professional input and expertise of the Finance and Development Committee including the Steering Committee for development of Auchenflower land and the Property Maintenance and Development sub-committee. An extra vote of thanks goes to the constant reliability and dependability of the weekly Money Counters group. Thanks go to everyone for your tireless efforts on behalf of the parish!

Special message for new and existing parishioners. We welcome new members to the community and new participants in the TG Programme, so please take a copy of Fr Quin’s letter of encouragement and a New/Change Parishioner brochure or form from the back of the church, complete and place on the collection plate or forward to Sandy Dunne, Finance Officer at the Parish Office for processing. Similarly, please take the time to let us know if you are changing banking details, home address or leaving the parish in the near future. It helps to keep the parish database updated too! Any questions? Don’t hesitate to call Sandy at the Parish Office (Mon—Wed). Thanks and God Bless! Fr Peter Quin SJ, Parish Priest.

THE THANKSGIVING PROGRAMME IS THE MAJOR REVENUE SOURCE FOR THE PARISH. PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING UP IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY A MEMBER.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

The Catholic bishops of England and Wales have published an extraordinary candid, piece of criticism, accusing the Church of being bigoted, misogynistic, controlling, judgemental, outdated and Pharisaical. These are all words taken from a summary of response to a consultation conducted by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales in preparation for the forthcoming international synod of bishops in Rome, on the subject of marriage and family life. Yet, there is no cynicism among these accusations. Rather, the laity who commented are revealed as warm, generous, open-hearted and still committed to their faith. What they are criticising was the “official” Church, how-ever defined—the disapproving judgemental hierarchical Church as portrayed in the media and as described by its enemies & those it has hurt. And as many of them point out, this is not based on the Church as it presently under Pope Francis, but on how it is perceived to have acted over generations.

The consultation produced a rich seam of spiritual insight and reflection. It pleads for things to change, especially regarding those who are estranged from the Church over issues of sexual ethics. A constant refrain was that the next generation of Catholics will be permanently alienated unless there is change that makes the church a warmer home for women, for gay people, and for the divorced and remarried. They want a Church that engages with married life and its messy difficulties realistically and humanely, not one offering idealistic textbook answers.
