PAGE 5 School, community welcome home soldier By ZANE CLARK The Sun On the Friday morning before Memorial Day weekend, U.S. Army Maj. Dan Keenaghan thought he was going to a small meet and greet at Evans Elemen- tary School. Instead, he was the one who was met and greeted in rock-star- like fashion in the school’s park- ing lot by the entire student body , school faculty, police and emer- gency services, elected officials, veterans, biker groups, Evesham residents, friends, family and more. Keenaghan was escorted to Evans in the sidecar o f a motor- cycle with veterans and motorcy- cle groups riding alongside, and when he arrived, a large crowd waving American flags and wel- come home signs greeted him with chants of “welco me home” and patriotic songs playing on the speakers. The day’s event was planned and made possible by Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey , the volunteer group focused on supporting troops through care packages and welcoming events. Keenaghan said the event was both awesome and humbling. “What an incredible welcome home from a community that brings out all different parts of service as well as sacrifice,” ZANE CLARK/The Sun The entire Evans Elementary student body and more came out for a surprise welcome home for U.S. Army Maj. Dan Keenaghan at the school on Friday, May 23 to start Memorial Day weekend. Keenaghan’s wife’s cousin teaches at the school, and Keenaghan exchanged letters and emails with her students while he was serving in Afghanistan last year.  please see KEENAGHAN, page 2

16 THE MARLTON SUN — JUNE 4-10, 2014

Residents express concerns

bly about $40,000 to $50,000 of liens on the property,” Gillespiesaid. “Those lienors have an in-terest in the property so they hadto get notice of our intention.”

Gillespie said further compli-cating matters is that normallywhen a township files suit to ac-quire a property, it would presenta plan to the court specifically de-tailing how the township plans tosecure, stabilize and repair theproperty.

However, as of the May 27meeting, the township had yet toacquire access to the property toperform an inspection and draftsuch a plan.

“That’s why we have to file thenotices,” Gilliespie said. “That’swhy we have this pre-suit notifi-cation process that we’ve fol-lowed, it’s why we’re going to gointo court with an order to showcause and have them show causewhy we shouldn’t be allowed to

inspect this property, come upwith a stabilization plan, or if theinspection reveals that demoli-

tion is warranted, why we should-n’t be allowed to demolish it.That’s their due process.”

Several residents who live near

the Yale Road property spoke dur-ing the public comment portionof the meeting, expressing theirdistress and concerns over theproperty.

Mary Ellen Walls, of Jay Court, said she was glad to hear thetownship is doing somethingabout the problem because it hasbeen going on for so long.

“Recently, I was up on thehouse-next-door’s step lookingover and I was thinking to myself I don’t know how anybody in theworld could live next-door tosomething like this, because it’sfrightening,” Walls said. “It’s not

just a beat up old house; it lookslike a house of horrors. It’s terri-ble, and we’ve learned recentlythat the man that lived there wasa hoarder. It’s full of cardboardboxes. It could be a fire hazard.”

Walls and other residents whospoke also mentioned a family of raccoons living at the propertythat have been seen by multiple

residents during the day, indicat-ing the possibility of them beingrabid.

Rich Duda, who lives next-doorto the property, corroborated theaccount of the previous tenantbeing a hoarder.

“If you look in the front win-dows, if you go on the porch youcan literally see boxes stackedup,” Duda said. “The guy is ahoarder. His ex-wife when he diedcame over and filled six industri-al trash cans out of his car, so youcan imagine what the house islike.”

Brown sympathized with theresidents’ concerns, and said hewouldn’t want to live anywherenear such a serious safety hazard. He said he’d work to have thetownship do whatever it can todeal with the property as fast itcan, but ultimately it would haveto follow statutes as written bythe state.

“At the end of the day, we’restill spending your money,”Brown said. “If we were to gothere and perform something ille-gal on that property, and then itturns out it costs taxpayers aquarter-million-dollars to remedy, there will be a lot of unhappy peo-

ple considering we’re looking at20-plus homes just on this firstlist.”
