The township council reluctantlyadopted the municipal budget with a taxincrease of $59 per year for the averageassessed home of $271,200, after tablingit numerous times since March.

Mayor Randy Brown has been push-ing for support for state Senate bill 1896,which would make other entities re-sponsible for tax appeal losses. Themovement of the bill has been the mo-tive to hold off on making decisions onthe budget, and why the township hasbeen reluctant to make any decision.

Little by little, the effects of

health-care reform, or Oba-

macare as its commonly

known, are starting to come to light.

Change in price and type of health in-

surance, and the availability of public

health insurance, will take shape in

the coming months.In July, the Obama administration

made a change to one aspect of health-

care reform that they said would help

make them a friend to American busi-

ness: They delayed the employer

mandate provision by one year, to

2015.

The provision has been controver-

sial since it was announced, because itrequires businesses with 50 or more

full-time employees to provide health

insurance.

The Obama administration pro-

claimed that the delay would give busi-

nesses relief they needed as they are

still attempting to get back up to full

speed.

But will it work? We doubt it will.

Take a look at Middletown, N.J., a

Monmouth-County township of ap-

proximately 66,552 residents as of the

2010 Census. Just last week, the town-

ship cut hours for part-time employeesto avoid having to offer them health in-

surance. The move saves the township

an estimated $775,000 per year.

Its a great move for the township,

but not so great for the employees,

who now get fewer hours and no

health insurance through their em-

ployer and possibly also the resi-

dents, who now may have to face a cut

in services.

Middletown made the move now,

even though the employer mandatewas pushed back to 2015.

Similar cost-saving tactics could be

used in our town, and the question

would be: How would that affect our

services, and possibly our neighbors

own wallets?

That is unknown as of yet, but its a

reality we may have to face not only on

the public employment level, but alsoon the private employment level, as

businesses make similar cost-cutting

measures.

It just makes no sense to us.

police reportsThe following is on file with the Eve-sham Township Police Department:

On Aug. 15 at 7:20 p.m., an Evesham po-lice officer conducted a motor vehicle stopin the area of Route 70 and Troth Roadafter observing suspicious activity.

During the investigation, Evesham Po-lice K-9 Ciko was called upon to assist offi-cers with the detection of narcotics.

Ciko was walked around the exterior ofthe suspects vehicle at which time healerted officers to the presence of nar-cotics inside the car.

A subsequent search of the vehicle byofficers resulted in the discovery cocaine,marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The first suspect, age 19 of Medford, wascharged with third-degree possession ofcocaine, a disorderly persons offense for

possession of marijuana, and a disorderlypersons offense for possession of drugparaphernalia.

She was released on her own recogni-zance.

The second suspect, age 21 of Medford,was charged with third-degree possessionof cocaine and a disorderly persons of-fense for possession of drug parapherna-lia.

She was committed to the BurlingtonCounty Jail on default of $4,500 bail stem-ming from two outstanding warrants.

The third suspect, age 21 of Marlton,was charged with third-degree possessionof cocaine and a disorderly persons of-fense for possession of drug parapherna-lia.

She was released on her own recogni-zance.

According to Chew, there willbe some structural, deploymentchanges and upgrades in the tech-nology the department utilizes.He is also planning to expandcommunity outreach.

Theyre still in the process ofcreating our command staff,Chew said.

Chew has been with the depart-ment for 17 years, working as a po-lice officer since 1997. Chew planson upholding the accreditation,originally put in motion by Barth.

Its the backbone of this or-ganization. Its the gold standardfor law enforcement. Not only am

I committed to it, but the entire or-ganization is committed to it,Chew said. We want to employthe best practices.

Chew thanked the council forits continued support of the de-partment. He especially thankedtownship manager Bill Cromie,who was Chews captain when he

joined the force.He taught me what to do and

how to do it, Chew said. The township will be holding

a special meeting to discuss the

redevelopment/revitalizationplan for 15 properties, broken intolots, throughout the township.

According to Leah Furey Brud-er, township Planning and ZoningBoard planner, there are numer-ous lots and locations that can bebroken into seven or eight lots.

Olgas, G Boys and Tri Townehave all been designated as rede-velopment and blighted, and Aris-

tone properties have been classi-fied as revitalization but notblighted.

Typically, we want to make aredevelopment area more invitingand change them significantly,Bruder said.

According to Bruder, residen-tial lots were not included in therevitalization and redevelopmentproperty list. Additionally, thecouncil discussed downtown revi-talization, and which way thetownship could go, including tax

incentives, state grants and statefunding to upgrade downtown.We get $250,000 for a state

parks grant. A quarter of a mil-lion could go a long way down-town, Brown said.

Brown also inquired about bor-rowing as a possible solution.

The Burlington County HealthDepartment is asking residents tobe cautious, and to avoid strange,wild and/or stray animals.

We want to remind all resi-dents that rabies is present in thecounty, Freeholder JoanneSchwartz said.

Residents are encouraged tostay away from unfamiliar orwild animals.

This year, there have been

some confirmed cases of rabiesin wildlife in Burlington County.Rabies can be seen in animalssuch as raccoons, bats, skunks,foxes and groundhogs. Rabies isalways fatal in animals and isfatal in humans if prompt treat-ment is not sought.

Pet owners are encouraged tohave their pets vaccinated for ra-bies. There is also a vaccine forhumans that can be given to indi-

viduals who might have been ex-posed to rabies.

The vaccine is a series of injec-tions that has proved effective inpreventing the disease from de-veloping in humans if adminis-tered early enough. The best wayto avoid rabies is prevention.

To protect yourself against ra-bies:

Do not touch or feed wildanimals, or stray dogs or cats.

Keep garbage in tightlysealed containers. Stay away from any animal

The YMCA of Burling-ton and Camden Counties, acause-driven non-profit charita-ble organization, will host the in-augural Pedal With A PurposeSpinathon in partnership withReconstructive Orthopedics onSaturday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. untilnoon at the Mt. Laurel YMCA.

Proceeds from the four-hourSpinathon will provide childrenin local communities with YMCAYouth Scholarships and access toprograms that will have a lastingimpact helping them learn,grow and thrive. In addition toReconstructive Orthopedics, theSpinathon is sponsored by IvyRehab.

The bike must be occupied for

the entire four-hour event.Cyclists can ride in one or two

15-minute increments. After amaximum of 30 minutes on thebike, the teammate must switch.

The event will feature a DJ andcycling coach to motivate cycliststo Pedal with a Purpose.

The teams must meet the mini-mum fundraising entry fee of$500, in addition to a $25 teamregistration fee. Friends, familyand supporters can donatemoney to teams directly or send aCheerGram to be announced dur-ing the Spinathon by a DJ for $25.

New board member JoAnneHarmon served at her first Eve-sham Township Board of Educa-tion meeting last week.

The board appointed Harmon,after reviewing a pool of candi-dates, to serve until January. Har-

mons appointment comes on theheels of Rosemary Bernardis res-

ignation following anti-Semiticcomments made at a May meet-ing. The board accepted Bernar-dis resignation at the end ofJune.

Concurrently, the county clerkaccepted petitions to fill the one-year position, or the remainder of

Bernardis term, which will ap-pear on the November ballot.

Whoever wins in Novemberwill be sworn in during Januarysreorganization meeting, accord-ing to school board presidentSandy Student.

This is the first time the boardhas had the task of filling a va-cant position since the electiondate was changed to November.Harmon ran for one of the openpositions last November.

Her resume includes Girl Scoutleader to a Junior Girl ScoutTroop of 17 girls, Girl Scoutleader to a Brownie Girl ScoutTroop of 10 girls, Evans Elemen-tary School PTA treasurer, EvansElementary School PTA webmas-ter and chairperson of E-Commu-nications Initiatives, Evans Ele-mentary School PTA school boardliaison and Evesham Town WatchCommittee member.

Evesham Township Directorof Curriculum and InstructionDanielle Magulick gave a presen-tation to the board of educationon the math curriculum. The de-partment researched, tested andadopted a new math program,which follows common core stan-dards. Additionally, it workedwith the Lenape Regional HighSchool District.

According to Magulick, theprogram will teach students aconceptual understanding tomake sense of math, proceduralskills and computational fluency,doing math and problem solving,or using math.

We wanted to thank all ourteachers, coaches and supervi-sors for all their hard work, not

just on the curriculum documentitself, but obviously for the dedi-cation to our students, Magulicksaid.

The next board of educationmeeting is scheduled for Sept. 26at 7 p.m. at the Evesham Town-ship Municipal Building, locatedat 984 Tuckerton Road.
