Across the MMA there has been substantialtransitionplanningworkcompletedaswepreparetotakepossessionoftheEppingsitelaterthisyear.Theprocurementprocessforthewarehousingandfacilitymanagementcontracts are well underway with both contracts set to be executed in thecomingmonths.DetailedworkisalsobeingcompletedtofinaliseITinfrastructure,wastemanagementfacilitiesandgeneraloperationalrequirements.

TherehasalsobeensubstantialprogressonsiteatEpping.Externalworksincludingroadways,storagefacilitiesandlandscapingarealmostcompleteandthecommissioningofservicessuchastelecommunicationsandpowerarealso well underway. When the MMA takepossessionofthesitewehavetheopportunitytomaketheEppingfacilityourowntomaximisethefullpotentialofthefacility.

Back at West Melbourne, the team arecontinuingtoensurethemarketisoperatingfitforpurpose.Anewstoragefacilityiscurrentlybeingconstructedforpolystyrenerecyclinganditisexpectedtobeoperationalmid-July.InternallytheMMAisimplementingaqualitymanagementsystemtoincreaseefficiencyinouroperations.Aspartofthis,weareimplementing

anewdocumentmanagementandcommunicationsystemandhavecommittedtoachievingISO9001certificationbytheendofNovember2013.

On17May2013flowermarkettenantsparticipatedintheballotforflowerstandsatEpping.TheeventwasasuccessandalsoasignificantmilestoneinthetransitiontoEppingmarket.IwouldliketocongratulateallthosewhoparticipatedintheballotandlookforwardtofinalisingthelicensesfortheflowermarketatEppinginthecomingmonths.

TheMMAandtheStatearecommittedtomovingforwardwiththetransitiontotheEppingmarket.Wehavespentextensivetimecompletingdetailedplansinpreparationforthenextstageoftheprojectanditisnowtimeforustobeginimplementingtheseplans.Asthefinalstagesapproachus,Ilookforwardtoworkingwithallourstakeholderstodeliveracentralmarketwecanallbeproudof.

Thefirstfewmonthsinanynewrolepresentsitsshareofchallenges.Itisa time to learn the business, understand the stakeholders and establish a cleardirectionfortheworkthatliesahead.Coupledwiththis,Ihavehadthechallengeofunderstandingthecomplexityofthemarket’stransitiontoEpping.

MostpeoplewhohaveworkedhereforawhileknowthatVitoSilvaggioofVito’sHireisthe‘go-toman’whentheseandotherunexpectedequipmentfailuresoccuronsite.

Forthebestpartofthirtyyears,Vitohasbeenrunninghisequipmenthirebusiness–andhelpingoutpeoplewhohaveencounteredaprobleminthesmallhourswhenhelpishardtofind.

VitoarrivedinAustraliaon24thSeptember,1959fromhisvillageinCalabria.Likesomanymigrantsofthaterathetwenty-five-year-oldwasseekingabetter,moreprosperouslifethantheonehehadleftbehind.Hiswife,Rosaandhistwochildren,JoeandFranca,accompaniedhimonthejourneytotheothersideoftheworld.

Atfirstheworkedwithasewerageanddrainagecontractingfirm.InthosedaystheOccupationalHealthandSafetylawswererudimentaryandworkingundergroundwithjackhammersleftVitowithalong-termhearingproblem.

The6thJanuary,1963isanimportantdateinVito’shistory.ThatwasthedayheacquiredhisfirstbusinessinAustralia,afruitstallatVictoriaMarket.Comingfromfamilyfarmingstock,hehadalwayswantedtobeself-employedandhisfruitstallwastheopportunityhewasseeking.

Helaterhadhisownsupermarketwhichheranwithfamilymembers.ButtheywerenotasenthusiasticaboutthebusinessasVitoandtheymovedon.

TheMelbourneMarkets'standfeaturedthe"AvenueofFlorists"showcasing20Victorianfloristswhowowedthepublicwithawidevarietyofcreativearrangementsandthisyearthepublicwereabletovoteontheirfavouritedisplay.ThewinnerwasBalflowerofBalnarring,2ndplace-ArtStemsonLygon,closelyfollowedbyScentofaFlower, Fitzroy.

Anumberoffloristsalsoprovidedfloraldemonstrationstwiceaday,givingtheaudienceaninsightintoflowerarranging,flowercareandtheming.

ThestandalsofeaturedtheMarketvintagetruck,awiderangeofseasonalflowers,foliageandplantsaswellasacompetitionandgiveaways.

Since2000FareSharehasprovidedfreehealthy,nutritiousmealsforthehomelessandhungryinMelbourneusingqualitysurplusfooddonatedbyMelbourne’sbusinesses.TheMelbourneMarketsistheirmajorsourceoffruitandvegetables,bothdirectlyandviaFoodBank.

NewlyrelocatedtoawarehouseinAbbotsford,FareShare'snewhomehasbeenfittedouttoincludealargeproductionkitchen,coolrooms,distributionareaandoffices,toensurethatstaffandvolunteersarefullyequippedtopreparemealsinnotonlyquantitybutquality.

FromMondaytoSaturday,forfiveshiftsaday,professionalchefsoversee100volunteersadayandcook4,000mealsdaily.Volunteersconsistofschools,corporategroupsandindividuals.

Themenuisspecificallytailoredtobenotonlynutritiousbuteasytopackandstore,suchascasseroles,stir-fries,pies,quichesandpasties.Theyarefullofvegetables,high-fibrebreadcrumbs,meat,cheeseandeggs.

Mealsaregivenforfreetocharitiesoperatingfoodbanks,soupvans,crisiscareandotherservices–fromSt.VincentdePaultoWesleyMission;fromtheAsylumSeekersResourceCentretoschoolbreakfastprograms.
