YEARS 7 TO 13 MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls Term 3 - Number 5 Friday 21st August, 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians, Last Friday was our special Marist Day, a much loved tradition of the College started in 1976. It commemorates the Feast of the Assumption (actually 15 th August) which is a sign of hope and joy, honouring Marys simple faith and trust when she said yesto God. We started the day with a wonderful Mass celebrated by Bishop Pat, Father Kevin and Father Tony. The singing, led by Year 13, was amazing. The following sixteen students received the Sacraments of Initiation. Mana Pongi, Grace Davis, Kaiya Brown, Amy Wadman, Nicole Bamfield, Cordelia Berwick, Yasmin Baldwin, Vivian Undag, Alexandria Meyer, Lily Bold, Shalom Kaho, Selina Tuimoala, Grace Senio, Isabelle Burr, Rosemary Han, Jasmine Russek. It was a privilege for the community to share in, and be witness to their commitment and we promise to support them on their journey. After Mass we launched into Marist Day the Time Travel Way. It was truly the best Marist Day ever. Activities included a haunted house, dance party, face painting, sing star and credit must go to the brave teachers who volunteered for the dunkn machine - all in all a great day. Thanks must go to the Year 13 students, ably led by Georgia, Jessica and Gemma, for their outstanding organisation, creativity and determination to provide such a fun day for all students. A true visual of servant leadership, Marist Spirit in action and pride in our school. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the Year 13 play which was cleverly and tastefully crafted and performed, causing hilarity among the students and staff. Year 12 organised a huge range of food for everyone from sausage sizzle to sushi to pizza and chop suey raising approximately $2,000.00 for the two chosen charities of Womans Refuge and Kaingaroa School. A wonderful effort. As a celebration of self the day showcased all that we value at Marist; positive attitude, participation, inclusion, generosity and service, not forgetting good old fashioned fun, as the girls sang were all in this together”. Your daughters are young women to be proud of who have Marist Spirit to burn. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last Friday was our special Marist Day, a much loved tradition of the College started in 1976. It commemorates the Feast of the Assumption (actually 15

th

August) which is a sign of hope and joy, honouring Mary’s simple faith and trust when she said ‘yes’ to God.

Activities included a haunted house, dance party, face painting, sing star and credit must go to the brave teachers who volunteered for the dunk’n machine - all in all a great day. Thanks must go to the Year 13 students, ably led by Georgia, Jessica and Gemma, for their outstanding organisation, creativity and determination to provide such a fun day for all students. Year 12 organised a huge range of food for everyone from sausage sizzle to sushi to pizza and chop suey raising approximately $2,000.00 for the two chosen charities of Woman’s Refuge and Kaingaroa School. A wonderful effort.

As a celebration of self the day showcased all that we value at Marist; positive attitude, participation, inclusion, generosity and service, not forgetting good old fashioned fun, as the girls sang “we’re all in this together”. FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR TERTIARY STUDENTS –

GET SUSSED

Students thinking about further study after they leave school have a lot of choices to make.

Sussed Online is a great way to get thinking about what it will cost to live and study. Will it be broadband and baked beans, or dial up and dining out? Part-time job or parents helping? Hear from students about their experiences and the choices that need to be made. You’ll also find out more about StudyLink and what they do along the way.

We encourage students and parents to check it out at www.studylink.govt.nz.

HUBBARDS VISIT TO FOOD TECHNOLOGY

On Monday 17th August, the 7R Food Technology class was provided with a real treat when Rebecca Bergs, the Marketing Manager of Hubbards, came and spoke to them. Rebecca told the class all about the importance of healthy breakfasts, and what the food items are that make up a healthy breakfast. Rebecca also explained the various ways the Hubbards Company develop new mueslis and cereals.

There is no doubt the most exciting aspect of the talk was the testing and tasting of the Hubbards muesli products. One student had never eaten muesli before and she could not get over how delicious it is! Holly and Talia made a fine job thanking Rebecca for the interesting information and food items she so kindly provided.

Our Daughter’s Future – Marist College Board of Trustees - Community Consultations

On August 17th, the Board of Trustees met with approximately 30 members of the parent community of Marist. This was a facilitated brainstorming session on the goals we would like to have as a college community over the next five years and values we would like to see emphasised. If anyone in the college community would still like to have their say – please fill in the survey that has now been sent to all

parents and caregivers for a second time or contact one of the members of the board directly. As we said on the night, there is no such thing as wrong input so please have the courage to contribute to this very important process!

All input must be received by September 1st. Christine Magness – Chair of the Board Trustees
