Fred Yoshimura, 67, passed away on December 16, 2008 in Rancho Mirage, California after a long illness.

He was the father of David Yoshimura, '82, and Julie (Yoshimura) White, '84. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie, his mother, sister and four grandchildren. Sherrie was a two-term member of the Marist Foundation Board of Directors.

Marist moms'prayer group

Join a group of Marist Moms who are praying for our children. We meet the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1201 Satre St., Eugene. This month we meet on Feb. 6 & 20 at 8:30 A.M. in the parish center chapel for daily Mass and afterwards in one of the rooms for 30 minutes of prayer. Please join us. Two students in need of housing

Michelle Reid, Community Coordinator with exchange students for ETC Private School Exchange, is looking for a host family for a student who arrived from South Korea Jan 25. The boy, SungHyuk, 17, needs the host family through June when school is out.

LuAnn Langford, International Coordinator for Global Perspectives for Youth, is looking for a host family for Marist senior Chen Yanling (nicknamed “Yan”). She is with a great family right now but, unfortunately, they have had some immediate family concerns that will make them unable to care for Yan in the way that they feel she deserves. She will need hosting from early February until graduation in June.

The new host family will provide a room, meals and hospitality for Yan, as well as transportation to and from Marist on school days. Yan is looking forward to sharing her Chinese culture and creating a lifelong friendship with her new host family!

Yan will have her own spending money and health insurance during her stay. GPY offers a stipend to her host family to assist with expenses. Langford is available at all times to coordinate and supervise Yan’s stay.

of time and equipment, (Conveyered Aggregate Delivery), we have begun constructing a Pétanque field here at Marist that will serve students for years to come. Pétanque at Marist offers involvement, competition, camaraderie, excitement, life-skills, opportunities to meet and interact with students from other local high schools, and a place to fit in and belong. Pétanque is a life-long sport that allows for competition and fun regardless of age, gender or athletic ability!

Would you please consider making a tax-deductable donation to further this field for our students? Donations of both money and time/equipment/expertise are needed, and will be greatly appreciated. I can’t tell you how excited the students are to see this project take shape. “Are we really getting our own place to practice and compete, just for us?” This field validates their involvement in this “alternative” sport and gives them something to be proud of.

Marist is the first high school in Eugene to begin constructing its own field and this will be the first official Pétanque field in the Eugene/Springfield area. Currently South Eugene, Churchill, Sheldon, Marist and North Eugene compete in a fall

and spring league, with a season-ending tournament to declare les champions de pétanque for each season. I’m hopeful that we will be able to have our field ready for this spring season play in late March.

Optimistically, I am hoping to raise $5,000 to complete and maintain this field. However, any amount, large or small, will help us toward our goal. Where known, I have included approximate costs. Items are listed in order of need to get the field “up and running” for our spring season beginning the end of March. • Weed barrier ($400 estimated cost)IMMEDIATE NEED; • Cost of gravel ($325) IMMEDIATE NEED; • Delivery: Conveyered Aggregate Delivery has offered us half-price! Preview Day......drew a large crowd on Saturday, Jan. 17. Eighth-graders and their parents enjoyed an afternoon of finding out what Marist is all about from current students, staff and coaches. If you are interested in Marist, but were unable to attend Preview Day, please contact the Admissions Office at 686-2234 Ext. 1516 for information.

Mr. Jeff Dreiling brought his Marist Outdoor Adventure Program ("MOAP") to Newport recently for a day of crabbing. He said that "the weather was just per-fect" and that "everyone was able to bring home a Dungeness crab or two."

A huge "Thank You" goes to Mark and Janet Clay (son Logan Clay, '06) who treated everyone to a lunch of appetizers, clam chowder, cioppino and soft drinks — a great way to end the trip.

Students are reminded to keep an eye on the Daily Bulletin for upcoming MOAP events. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

Retreat News

For most students, retreats are one of the most unique and memorable events of the

Marist experience. Information and registration forms for all upcoming retreats are available for download at Marist.org/campus ministry.htm. Students may also stop by the Campus Ministry Office to pick up a registration form.

The second Sophomore Boys Retreat had to be canceled and will be rescheduled as soon as possible. Information will be forthcoming.

Ash Wednesday (Feb. 24) begins the Church season of Lent, a 40-day period of repentance and renewal that precedes Holy Week and Easter.

During Lent we challenge students to spiritual renewal marked by an increase in prayerfulness and attention to living out their faith. We will again begin each Friday of Lent with a “Lenten Friday Mass” at 8:00 a.m., in the cafeteria. Classes will start at 9:20 a.m. We strong encourage all students to join us on this Lenten pilgrimage.

Christian Service

The 2009 Catholic Schools Week theme “Celebrate Service” is certainly made manifest here at Marist. Our current student body has done over 10,000 community and Christian Service hours!

Senior Service

Mrs. Ferrari will be contacting seniors who have not turned in verification of 30 hours and/or their first five journal entries. Senior free period will be revoked starting next week (Feb. 9) for those who fail to meet this deadline.

Junior Service

Another 10 hours of local service is to be done by the end of the third quarter. This service is integral to the junior Theology curriculum.

We are entering what might be loosely termed the scholarship phase of the college process for seniors. Decisions should be in or coming in soon and now it is time to look carefully at the financial picture for next year.

Lane Community College and the LCC Foundation offer a number of scholarships each year with some applying to Marist students who will be attending Lane next year. Marist Volunteer Program asks for your help! The early months of each new year find many in our community needing food assistance. The holiday donations to service organizations have been used up and the overall level of donations tends to decline.

Starting with Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 25-31) and continuing through Feb. 5, we will be asking you to bring in canned and boxed food products for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. The most important types of food, and those with the most immediate impact, would be those high in protein such as:

canned yams• black olives• cranberries• cranberry sauce• canned tuna• chili• hearty soups•

Please be generous — help us fill the large white container which will be outside the office.

Thank you for helping Marist to help families in need.

Saturday, Feb 7 starting at 5:00 P.M., the Bahamas "Goombay Festival" Cruise sets sail. Please

contact our office at 686-0251 as soon as possible if you plan on attending. Tables are going quickly this year! Patron tables are $1000 per table (includes dinner for 8 to 10 guests) or you can purchase individual tickets for $75 per person or $150 per couple.

The Valley Boys will be playing after the Auction at 9:45 P.M. for a little entertainment and dancing this year.
