Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2013

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

Pope Paul VI in his Encyclical on the month of May wrote:

The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady and it is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in Church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance (No.1).

Historically, the devotion in May originated towards the end of the thirteenth century. Mary lived by faith. Her commitment to her faith was/is unwavering. To us it is an inspiration. I write this article on ANZAC Day, having been inspired by nearly 600 boys and staff who marched in the Ashgrove march this morning. I wholeheartedly praise their commitment. To see Waterworks Road between Betheden Terrace and Stewart Road full of our boys immaculately dressed in full winter uniform, instilled in all who were present a real sense of pride in belonging to Marist College Ashgrove.

Mary’s role in the Church is central. As is her role in all things Marist. In 2007 Br Sean Sammon wrote that St Marcellin advised his first brothers to model themselves on Mary, as he saw it as a “sure way for them to centre their lives on the Lord. And so they strove to make her ways their own.”

“In Mary’s Way” is one of the five pillars of a Marist education. As Marists we refer to Mary as Our Good Mother. St Marcellin was deeply devoted to Mary and had total trust in her. He wrote:

“Without Mary we are nothing and with Mary we have everything, because Mary always has her adorable Son within her arms or in her heart.”

The statue of St Marcellin in the College Chapel has his left hand motioning in the direction of Mary who then directs us to Jesus. The motto attributed to St Marcellin is, “All to Jesus through Mary, all to Mary for Jesus.” Such was St Marcellin’s belief in Our Good Mother. This was the image that Marcellin chose for the Brothers. The Marist publication Gathered Around the Same Table states:

We want our relationships to be imbued with her tenderness and proximity. With those feelings of compassion, we present to the world the great gift of God made man. We feel a special confidence in Mary. Like Marcellin, we admit that she has done everything for us and it is our custom to go to Christ through his love for his Mother. Devotion to Mary centres us in Jesus and sustains us on the way of the Gospel.

So, to put it simply, we need to follow our faith with our heart, as Mary did. Our focus needs to be on the important spiritual things:

Do not store up for yourself treasures on Earth where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourself treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. MATTHEW 6:19-21

Let’s all choose Mary’s way this MayMary, Our Good Mother… Pray for us.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlinHeadmaster

Mission and MinistryNEWS FROM THE COLLEGE CHAPLAIN

Fr Pius Jones

The Month of May has long been thought of in the Catholic Church as Mary’s month and devotions to Our Lady have been a part of the tradition throughout the world. The origin of Our Lady’s month is very much unclear, some suggesting that it may have started in the northern part of Italy. Whatev-er the origins, the fact is that devotion to the Blessed Virgin in this month has been both popular and consistent.

Whether by plan or accident it is a most suitable time to celebrate Mary. May opens with the celebration of Saint Joseph the Worker, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. This good and just man shares in the life of Jesus and points to the dignity of each person and human labour. Easter is still upon us. We continue to celebrate the risen Lord and our own part in God’s plan.

Mary’s part in the whole mysterious plan of our salvation is both ordinary and extraordinary. A most unlikely candidate in all ways except one. Poor, low in status and unmarried! Yet she was one who had a profound openness to the action of the Holy Spirit, and this action was to be seen throughout her life, from the offer to being the mother of the Lord, to her support of the apostles in the Upper Room, being present in the midst of the new born church.

As Marists, Mary is indeed our Good Mother, who longs to lead us closer to her son Jesus. In this Easter season, we are reminded that this same Jesus, the son of Mary, died and rose, to prove his love for us, and even more, to bring us salvation and life, both in this world and for eternity.

A favourite prayer and hymn, the Sub Tuum, both traditional for Marists, and very much a prayer that is part of the Ashgrove story has a simple yet beautiful message: Mary, our Good Mother, watch over us:

We ask you for your protectionHoly Mother of God.Listen to our prayersAnd help us in our needs.Save us from every dangerGlorious and Blessed Virgin MaryWe ask you for your protection. Amen.

With every best wish,

In Jesus and Mary,

Father Pius Jones, SM

Ministry NewsRecently I had the graced opportunity to hear Bishop William Morris speak on Grace and Faith. In summing up he said “God is the heart and the beyond of everything”. How comforting it is to know this as a reality in our lives. The MATES ministry program hopes to offer to the students, staff and families of the College through the formation of right relationships and the actions of hope that we undertake, the central message of God’s love and in turn perhaps the comfort of knowing this as a reality in our lives.

On Friday 17 May we will be having a MATES free dress day. The boys choose to wear free dress bring in a gold coin dona-tion. The money raised from days like these go towards the upkeep and maintenance of ministry programs including the BBQ’s With the Homeless.

The Wednesday evening BBQ With the Homeless has places available for families to volunteer in the next school holidays and into Terms 3 and 4. If you would like to participate in this action of hope please contact Liz Spry in the Ministry Office via email on [email protected]

The visits to the Enoggera Respite Centre for the Year 7 students begins next week, and the other ministry programs roll on with the generous support of staff, students and families. Please feel free to contact any member of the Mission team for further information about the MATES ministry program.

It is comforting to know that the actions of hope in which we participate in are reflections of the heart of God.

Blessings for this week

Year 10 LAMP

What is LAMP ? LAMP  (Leadership  and  Mentoring  Program)              is  one  of  the  outreach  opportunies  under  the    MATES  umbrella.

LAMP is in its 4th year of operaon and works on the model of Year 10 boys, walking and working with younger students in local Catholic Primary Schools. Marist students visit on a weekly basis throughout term me, and work with students from the school – the ages and type of work/play acvity is determined by our host school. The response to the program by our Year 10 boys is overwhelming. The Marist boys enjoy the me spent with younger students and are given opportunity to engage with, listen to and support others.

Opportunies to parcipate in the LAMP program are open to all Year 10’s in the College Community. Students can register in the Ministry Office.

nAPLAnThe National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.

On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students will take the 2013 NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives.

All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.html

NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au.

ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH ORGANISATION?

The Centre for Learning Enrichment is currently supporting students by running:

*Organisational and Time Management Sessions in 405 every Tuesday at First Break (Students are provided with an Assignment Task Organiser, the opportunity to create a time management plan and suggestions for Computer File Management) Please email Mrs Alison Barlow to book a spot: [email protected]

*Term Planning Sessions with Mrs Byrne in 503 every Friday from 8am. (Students map due dates in Student Diary to make a plan for the term. Please email Mrs Berny Byrne to book a spot: [email protected]

The sessions have proven to be invaluable as the students quickly and simply become better organised. Boys are able to attend follow up sessions and if requested arrangements can be made to meet with the students on a regular basis. Our organisation system is not rocket science, just a simple method to encourage students to have good organisational and time management skills.

Music NewsinTeRnATionAL JAzz SAxoPHoniST To ViSiT ASHGRoVeTwo-time Grammy Award winner Ernie Watts, one of the most versatile and prolific saxophone players in music will be conducting a jazz improvisation clinic for Marist students on the 31st of May. It has been more than fifty years since he first picked up a saxophone, and from age sixteen on he has been playing professionally, initially whilestill attending school. Watts has been featured on over 500 recordings by artists ranging from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa, always exhibiting his unforgettable trademark sound.

Watts started playing saxophone at age 13 in Wilmington, Delaware. He won a scholarship to the Wilmington Music School where he studied classical music and technique. Although he would enroll briefly at West Chester University in music education, he soon won a Downbeat Scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, renowned for jazz.

During the 1970s and ‘80s, Watts was immersed in touring and the busy production scene of Los Angeles. His signature sound was heard on countless TV shows and movie scores, almost all the early West Coast Motown sessions, and with pop stars such as Aretha Franklin, theRolling Stones and Steely Dan. Though the pop music genre placed narrow confines on his performance, the studio sessions allowed Watts the chance to constantly hone and refine his tone. After years in the studios, Watts’ passion for acoustic jazz never left him. At the end of a long day of sessions, he could frequently be heard playing fiery jazz in late-night clubs around Los Angeles.

Watt’s is visiting Brisbane as a feature artist in this years Brisbane International Jazz Festival.“He is one of the greatest living tenor saxophonists, at the top of his game.”Ian Patterson / All About Jazz 2013 Instrumental Music Passes.Due to the introduction of new traffic arrangements and the boom gate at the Glenlyon Drive entry, please be advised that the instrumental passes are no longer valid. Junior School NewsDear Parents,

You may have heard or read this sentence before: “Mary was the first disciple of Jesus.” There are many works of art, through the ages, depicting Mary sitting in the middle of the disciples, the centre of the discipleship that was just in its infancy. Biblical scholars would refer to this time as the beginning of the Church or the birth of the Church.

What does discipleship mean in 2013? Can we, in our busy and 21st Century lives, follow a life of discipleship? Father Ronald Rolheiser OMI, has some challenging points for us to consider, which I share with you this week:

• Gratitude is the ultimate virtue underlying everything else, even love. Gratitude is synonymous with holiness. Gratitude not only defines sanctity, it also defines maturity. We are mature to the degree that we are grateful.

• Be willing to carry more and more of life’s complexities with empathy. Few things in life, including our own hearts and motives, are black and white. Maturity invites us to see, understand and accept this complexity with empathy.

• Transform jealousy, anger, bitterness and hatred rather than give them in kind. In the face of jealously, anger, bitterness and hatred, we must be like water purifiers, holding the poisons and toxins inside and giving back just pure water.

• Let suffering soften rather than harden our souls. Suffering and humiliation find us all, but how we respond to them, with forgiveness or bitterness, will determine the level of maturity and the colour of our person. Will my humiliations harden or soften my soul?

• Forgive. This is the only condition for living in the human community. Perhaps, the greatest struggle we have in the second-half of our lives is to forgive: forgive those who have hurt us, forgive ourselves for our shortcomings. The greatest moral imperative of all is not to die with a bitter, unforgiving heart.

• Live in gratitude. Holiness is gratitude. Outside of gratitude, we find ourselves doing many of the right things for the wrong reasons.

• Bless more and curse less. We are mature when we define ourselves by what we are for, rather than by what we are against. The capacity to praise more than to criticise defines maturity.

• Live in an ever-changing transparency and honesty. We are as sick as our sickest secret, but we are also as healthy as we are honest. Maturity does not mean that we are perfect or faultless, but that we are honest.

• Pray. We are mature to the degree that we open our own helplessness and invite in God’s strength.• Become ever-wider in your embrace. We grow in maturity to the degree that we define family, in a

way that is ever-more ecumenical, interfaith, post ideological and non-discriminatory. We are mature only when we are compassionate as God is compassionate.

• In the end, we are all vulnerable. Maturity depends upon accepting this with trust, rather than anxiety. We can only do our best, whatever our place in life, wherever we stand, whatever our limits, whatever our shortcomings and trust that this is enough.

As we progress through the month of May, may Mary, the first disciple and the model of authentic discipleship, guide each of us in our lives, no matter what our role – mother, father, teacher, friend….

DAiLY AnGeLuS DuRinG THe MonTH of MAYOn 1st May, each boy in the Junior School was presented with his own “Angelus Card” which is taped to his desk. I spoke with the boys about this ancient Catholic prayer at assembly and explained the procedure we would be following during the month of May, which is dedicated to Mary. I made the following points:

• A bell would ring each day at noon and each class is asked to stop and recite the Angelus. This is an ancient Catholic custom, which is still popular to this day.

• Reciting the Angelus during May is also an old Marist tradition and so we are joining thousands of other Marist people, all over the world, in reciting the Angelus at noon.

Page 23: Marist College Ashgrove

Junior School News Continued...

• I emphasised the importance of a few seconds of silence – a time to reflect and to be grateful for all that we receive each day. I asked the boys to think of their parents, families and friends who are working so hard to have them at this College.

Hopefully, through these few seconds of Prayer each day, the boys will grow in the belief that spirituality can add to a fuller, human life, especially the attribute of gratefulness.

BRiSBAne inDePenDenT SCHooLS CoMPeTiTion [BiS]:The first tournament for BIS, in Chess, Public Speaking and Debating, took place on Tuesday 30 April at Saint Peter’s Lutheran College. I thank the boys who participated and represented the College so well.

THe YeAR 5 CAMP:This year’s Camp was a great success, thoroughly enjoyed by the boys. Reports from the staff and parents who accompanied the boys were full of praise for the Year 5 boys as a group, especially their behaviour and the support they gave each other over the three days. I thank, most sincerely, the staff who attended, plus the following parents: Chris Shay, Grant Blaker, Renée Love, William O’Flaherty, James Durkin, Langton Clarke, Steve Klein, Brett Leavy, Jill Petrie and Damian Renwick.

Junior School Sports NewsCiC RuGBY & SoCCeRThe football season has started in earnest with some outstanding and exciting games being played by many Ashgrove teams over the past couple of weeks. Both the Rugby and Soccer players have performed admirably and everything looks bright for an enjoyable season. To ensure the football season remains hassle free for everyone, I would like to highlight to parents a few important reminders:

• Coaches need to be informed if players will be missing for training or at the game. Contact details are on the College website.

• As outlined in the College diary, commitment to school football takes priority over Club football or going away for the weekend.

• Players must wear full appropriate College football uniform whilst playing CIC games.• Each player needs his own clearly named water bottle for all CIC matches. • Weekly Results can be found on the College website.• A season draw has been completed and is posted on the College website. This will give you an

indication of when games will be occurring for each team throughout the season. It is important that each match is checked in the week leading up to the game as there may be last minute changes to some fixtures. Please ensure you check the games time and location each week on the College web-site or by checking the email I send out on a weekly basis.

CiC CRoSS-CounTRYThe CIC Cross-Country season is in full swing with the Junior Squad training hard. At this stage of the season, we have been extremely happy with the level of interest from our runners and their application to training is exceptional. With the CIC Championships occurring on May 31 the intensity at training is increasing and it’s been pleasing to see our aspiring Cross-Country runners meet the challenges with which they have been confronted.

The selection of the CIC Team - Seven boys from each Age group will be selected to represent Marist College Ashgrove at the CIC Championships which will be held on Friday 31 May at Villanova College. These boys will be selected on their attendance at training and their performances at the lead up carnivals prior to the CIC Championships.

inDiViDuAL ACHieVeMenTSCongratulations to James Dupont (6 Blue) who was selected in the Queensland Futsal team. James will compete at the National Futsal Championships held in Sydney in January next year. James’ team won the final of the State Championships which is a wonderful achievement. Well done James and good luck in January.

Congratulations to Cooper Cabot (5 Red), Declan McDermott (7 Gold) and Jack Symington (7 Gold) [pictured left to right in photo] who were selected in the Metropolitan North Hockey Team. These boys will compete at the State Championships in June.

Declan has also been named in the Brisbane U13 Hockey team.

Well done boys!Luke Caplick Head of Sport – Junior School
