treatments such as blow-drying.BELSIL ADM 8301 E and BELSILADM 6300 E are especially suitablefor rinse-off conditioners, hairtreatments, masks, pump sprays, conditioning shampoos and stylingapplications such as mousses. Thecolourless BELSIL ADM 8301 E alsoallows the formulation of transparentshampoos. The silicone gum blendBELSIL GB 1020 is a blend of low-viscosity dimethicones and high-molecular dimethiconol. Due to itscomposition, it combines theproperties of low-viscosity fluids andextremely high-viscosity dimethiconol. The excellent spreadingcharacteristics of the low viscositydimethicones allow a very gooddistribution of the high-viscosityconditioning agent dimethiconol.BELSIL GB 1020 is ideally suited forhair-, skin-, and sun-careapplications. In hair-care products, ithelps to protect the hair fibres. It addsa silky soft touch to the hair andimproves the gloss. Damaged haireven regains its natural appearance.BELSIL GB 1020 also improves wetand dry combability. The gum blendthus prevents damage to hair cuticles, making it an ideal ingredient for hair-tip fluids. New hair styling andconditioning polymer BELSIL P 1101is a silicone-organic hybrid based onWacker’s successful hair-stylinghybrid BELSIL P 101. The hybridpolymer combines the strong hold ofa hair styling resin with the softnessand silkiness associated withsilicones. In hair-styling applications,BELSIL P 1101 can be used as aflexible, film-forming and non-flakingpolymer for formulations aimed atgiving styles a medium to strong hold. When used in hair-conditioningformulations, BELSIL P 1101 canhelp to prevent thermal damage tothe hair caused by blow-dryingtreatments by reducing the water lossof the hair fibres. New siliconeemulsifying agent BELSIL OW 1500is a water-miscible liquidpolydimethylsiloxane copolymer andis able to improve the stability andrheology of suspensions andemulsions. It also improves the skinfeel of the formulation. In shampoosand shower gels, the silicone-basedsurfactant helps to stabilize the foamand provides a conditioning effect.BELSIL OW 1500 can also be used toformulate clear products. In creams
and lotions, the product is mainlyused as a co-emulsifier, improvingskin feel and product stability. Beingan oil-in-water system, it assureseasy handling and processing.BELSIL OW 1500 is able to mitigateirritations caused by surfactants, emulsifiers, lotions or creams.

Marina Biotech patent applicationsreceive allowance notices from USPTOand EPO
Marina Biotech Inc [Focus onSurfactants, Nov 2010] hasannounced that the US Patent andTrademark Office (USPTO) hasissued a notice of allowance forpatent applications US 12/004,154(‘154), US 10/594,553 (‘553) and US10/505,107 (‘107). Further, theEuropean Patent Office (EPO)provided a notice of an intent to grantfor European patent applicationEP09165106.7. The patents expandprotection to the company’sliposomal-based delivery capability, which includes both the Smarticlesand DiLA2 platforms as well as anemerging third platform thatrepresents a combination of keydelivery attributes from these twoplatforms. Since the acquisition of theSmarticles delivery technology, anamphoteric-based liposomal deliverysystem, in 2010 from Novosom AG,Marina has invested substantialresources to advance both thistechnology and the DiLA2 deliverytechnology, an amino acid-basedliposomal delivery system. Part of thisendeavour involved determiningwhether the DiLA2 and Smarticlesdelivery technologies could beintegrated, and novel formulationsdeveloped that take advantage of thebenefits of each platform. Marinaexpects to continue to exploit thesetechnologies and utilize them for theeffective, efficient and safe delivery ofboth single- and double-strandedoligonucleotide therapeutics. Both the‘154 and ‘553 patent applications

Newly-published study comparesSurfaxin LS and Curosurf in well-established RDS model
Discovery Laboratories Inc, aspeciality biotechnology company thataims to advance a new standard inrespiratory critical care, reported thatdata from a pre-clinical study ofSurfaxin LS (lyophilized KL4surfactant) was recently published inthe May 2012 issue of PaediatricResearch. The results of the studydemonstrate that improvements inlung function following administrationof Surfaxin LS compare favourably toimprovements in lung functionfollowing administration with pig-derived Curosurf, the leadingsurfactant product in Europe for thisapplication. In addition, physiologicfindings suggest that Surfaxin LS mayhave a more favourable safety profileat the time of surfactantadministration. The objective of thestudy was to compare the effects ofSurfaxin LS and Curosurf onpulmonary function, as well as thephysiologic reactions to surfactantadministration in preterm lambs withrespiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
In related news, the US DistrictCourt for the Western District of NewYork has issued a decision and ordergranting Cornerstone’s motion todismiss all the claims of ONY Inc inthe case filed by ONY concerningCornerstone’s neonatal lungsurfactant, Curosurf. ONY, the makerof a competing neonatal lungsurfactant, had filed suit on 2 Dec2011 in connection with an articleappearing in the 1 Sep 2011 onlineissue of the Journal of Perinatology. The article was based on aretrospective study in infants with
RDS that concluded that Curosurfwas associated with a significantlyreduced likelihood of death whencompared with ONY’s product. ONYalleged that the conclusions of thearticle were unreliable andmisleading. The Court ruled that thearticle was not misleading withrespect to the facts on which it wasbased, and dismissed ONY’s claimsagainst Cornerstone and all the othernamed defendants. Curosurf(poractant alfa) is an intratrachealsuspension indicated for thetreatment of RDS in prematureinfants.

Toku-E announces safer and fasterdissolving dust-free SDS grade forelectrophoresis and manufacturingapplications
Toku-E Co has announcedavailability of its newly developed, innovative, ultra-safe, fasterdissolving dust-free grade (DF) ofsodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Inanimal studies, prolonged exposureto SDS dust particles is known tocause eye and skin irritation. SDSmay worsen skin problems inindividuals with chronic skinhypersensitivity, with some peoplebeing affected more than others.Inhalation of SDS dust can causeacute symptoms like wheezing, coughing, chest tightness andshortness of breath, especially whenthe person has asthma. Not onlydoes Toku-E’s dust-free SDSalleviate this problem, it alsodissolves more quickly in water.Increased safety and reliability allstem from the physical properties ofToku-E’s dust-free SDS.
