Last spring the Temple Beth-El Foundation stepped forward by approving a $20,000 Membership Commitment matching grant for the 2014-2015 year. This grant, if fully met, will provide funds in addition to the annual Foundation allocation of support for our synagogue. We are pleased to share that 25% of congregants have responded to the challenge by increasing their membership commitment thus far. As of August 1st, over $18,000 in increased commitments have been made. With your help, we can meet the match before the arrival of the High Holidays.

Message From Rabbi Konigsburg


One of the great privileges I have as Rabbi is officiating at the conversion of

someone to Judaism. Having taught them for a year and then helping them to

navigate the Bet Din, the rabbinic court that has to affirm that they are ready to

become Jewish, I get to supervise their immersion in the Mikvah, the final act that

makes them a part of the Jewish people. It is a very moving moment for the one

who is choosing Judaism and for me, the one who has helped them realize their

dream of being Jewish.

The reality of American Jewish life is that we are all “Jews by Choice,” not just those who come to our

people from other religions; but we must choose every day if we will be living a Jewish life and just how

“Jewish” that life will be. We can talk about how hard it is to be Jewish in Birmingham, the constant

reminders that we live in a Christian community, the way social events in the city conform to a Christian

calendar without any regard for the Jewish calendar; but I can tell you that no matter where we live-

Birmingham or Boston, Mountain Brook or New York City, Vestavia Hills or Beverly Hills- it is never easy

to be a Jew. Even in Israel, where it is so easy to work and play according to Jewish time, it is still a hard

life if you want to live as a Jew.

The reason people come to join Judaism in this day and age, when they could be any religion they want

to be, or even no religion at all, is because there comes a time in life when we understand that there is

more to living than just looking out for oneself, and there is more to do than things that only benefit

one. Judaism teaches that when we are cold there are two ways to get warm: one is put on a fur coat

and the other is to build a fire. The difference is that the fur coat will keep you warm, but if you build a

fire, then you can warm up a lot of other people at the same time. When I help with a conversion, I am

helping others to warm themselves at the fire of our faith and morality.

Sure it is easy to try and be like everyone else but there is a great deal of satisfaction and meaning

when we can be on the street the same person we are at home, when we can be a Jew not only when

we are in synagogue but when we are out in public as well. We must always be proud of who we are

and what we do. At this season of the Jewish Holidays, we need to bring our values and culture to our

friends and neighbors so they can better understand who we are and what we stand for. What good is

having religious freedom if we are uncomfortable or embarrassed by the religion of our ancestors?

Be Jewish and be proud of it. Show the world who you are and let them know something about what

our life is all about. People of other faiths are not bad or doing something wrong; they are just different

from us. It is okay to be different; we don’t all have to be the same. We should never be afraid to talk to

others about our life, our faith and our God, and we should have enough pride in who we are so that

we can talk to others and understand their faith without it upsetting our own.

To do this we need to know more than just a small smattering of knowledge about Judaism and Jewish

values. If we don’t feel that we are up to having such conversations, then let’s talk about Lifelong

Jewish Learning. But that topic is for another day. This month, invite your friends to your Sukkah, to

Shabbat services or Simchat Torah, and share your values with them. It can be the beginning of real

conversation and real friendship, one that is built not on conformity to each other but on respect for

each other’s differences. It will open our horizons and help build a better community for everyone.

Message From Foundation Executive Director, Robin Gotlieb

I have to admit I find it ironic that the “accepted” phrase for pursuing charitable gift donations is “Planned Giving.” In my opinion, most charitable gifts are planned. I see the challenge as making sure that Temple Beth-El Foundation is part of those plans for each of our congregants. In a recent meeting, TBEF Board president, Suzanne Bearman, made a statement that provided clarity as to how Temple Beth-El and the Temple Beth-El Foundation work together. She said that it is important to delineate the various giving opportunities available for Temple Beth-El’s benefit and communicate that one of those opportunities is to give to the Temple Beth-El Foundation. The TBEF mission is “to perpetuate the vibrancy of Temple Beth-El by sustaining a strong endowment” and with “Planned Giving” that mission will

continue to be a reality. Planned giving generally involves one of three gifting methods—current outright gifts, expectancies, and deferred gifts. A common misconception is that all planned gifts are “deferred gifts.” Some planned gifts can be structured to provide immediate benefits to Temple Beth-El Foundation, others provide deferred benefits, and still others may involve a combination of methods, whereby a current outright gift is combined with a deferred gift or an expectancy to achieve the donor’s philanthropic and financial objectives.

Here is What’s Brewing this Month at Cup-O-Joe’s1 Word travels fast, but if you had not heard yet Cup-O-Joe’s is a big success! You will recall from last month that we continue to partner with the Institute of Smoldering Java

Lattes2. As best practices and greater customer service continues to be a goal of ours, the ISJL sent

corporate representatives down for a visit. The team lead3, Arielle Nissenblatt, helped facilitate

ongoing training as well as implementation of new concepts. To help in continuing our family friendly feel and have all our customers know us for who we are, Ms. Nissenblatt had this to say by means of introduction:

I am originally from White Plains, NY. I just graduated from college at Binghamton University in upstate New York where I studied Geography and Judaic Studies. I have

a great deal of experience as a barista4, having been a Hebrew school and a summer

camp (Ramah Berkshires) coffee slinger5 for three summers. My interests include

Jewish demography, Israel, travel, international studies, and so much more. I also love sports; I play soccer, basketball, and I love to rollerblade. I am really looking forward to working with Cup-O-Joe’s!

Additionally, we review and look ahead to our open door policy of fantastic local talents6. Everyone

loved the wet and wild Swim and Schmoozers. The ever-entertaining Family Trivia7 never ceases to

draw a crowd. The emotional BMP8 led by Jacob Kipp will be a weekend to remember. And who

would miss H2D9. It will be the gathering of the century promising to draw people of all ages.

HIDDUR MITZVAH SILVER POLISHING IS DONE!

On August 3, six women performed a Hiddur Mitzvah – a Beautifying Mitzvah. These women spent the morning polishing the silver Torah dressings in each ark in preparation for the High Holidays. There are so many delicate pieces in the crowns that the women were using Q-tips! Todah Rabah to the following for participating in this Mitzvah: Ellen Bruck, Riva Hirsch, Toby Klein, Janet Reagan, Esther Schuster, and Susan Stein.

Our expanding membership rolls have created the need for additional prayer books for the High Holidays. The new Lev Shalem Machzor is a beautiful and interactive prayer book which has received widespread praise. If you would like to sponsor one or more books ($72 each) to honor or remember someone, please contact the TBE office or make a donation at our website. Your support will honor a loved one and make the services meaningful for our congregants.

FAMILY PROMISE OF BIRMINGHAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS IN NOVEMBER

Temple Emanu-El will host our next rotation for FPoB the week of November 30. Temple Beth-El is a support congregation, and we are working together with volunteers from the entire Jewish community to help provide meals and a warm, safe place to stay each night during that week.

Ways to help:

Provide a meal one night and dine with the guests at Temple: 1 hour commitment

Volunteer to help with set up or clean up on Sunday November 30 or Sunday December 7: 1 hour commitment. If you own a truck with a hitch, help pick up beds: 1 hour commitment

Volunteer to spend one night at Temple as a chaperone: arrive at 7pm and leave at 7am the next morning. Sleep in your own Temple classroom as your private bedroom with a cot.

If your child needs volunteer hours, Family Promise is a simple and meaningful way to earn those hours!

KEHILLAH

Kehillah (community) is a collaborative community outreach project between the Levite Jewish Community Center and the local synagogues designed to more quickly integrate Jewish newcomers, families or individual, to Birmingham in to Jewish life. The program offers one-half off LJCC membership dues, one-half off a congregational membership, a subscription to Southern Jewish Life magazine and an introduction to the Birmingham Jewish Federation’s Shalom Birmingham to the newest Jewish arrivals to Birmingham (those individuals who have been here less than one year). Once you have joined one organization (synagogue or LJCC), you must join the reciprocating organization (LJCC or synagogue) within thirty days.

LJCC Joy Club: Join the LJCC Joy Club once a month for a delicious Kosher lunch and program at

The LJCC wants to make it easy for you to bring the joy of Shabbat to you and your family each

week. And we are doing it with a "tote" filled with wonderful goodies for Shabbat! Each week your

Shabbatote will be filled with Ricki’s Challah, Shabbat candles, your choice of wine or grape juice, &

beautiful fresh flowers from Flowerbuds. We will also add recipes and other Jewish learning. On Yom

Tovs (holidays), the totes will have an additional holiday-appropriate item like apples and honey, dried

fruits, gelt etc. Ricki's challah is famous in Memphis and her fame is spreading throughout the

Southeast. Her challah is mouth-watering delicious, fresh and strictly kosher and we're thrilled that

she's baking it fresh for our Shabbatotes each week! We will have it all nicely packaged and ready for

you to pick up on Fridays at 9 am in the Main Lobby! Each Shabbatote is available for $18 and the first

delivery will be on August 18.You can order for one week or as many as you like! Order online at

www.bhamjcc.org.

After the High Holidays, Collat Jewish Family Services will be collecting the food donated by

congregation members between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and we can’t do it without you! We

can schedule you to help for one hour or four, whenever you’re available. Please contact Lise Grace at

879-3438 or [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.

Sunday, November 2nd is TLC (Teens Lending a Caring Hand) Day, a Collat Jewish Family Services event

annually scheduled for the Sunday that marks the end of daylight savings time. We are seeking seniors

who want or need assistance with a variety of tasks - including turning their clocks back – as well as

teens in the 7th through 12th grades, who are interested in performing a very special mitzvah. Please call

your home.

Mah Jongg Lessons offered at the LJCC with Eva. Thursdays, September 4, 11, 18 & October 2 from

Film “Tony Curtis Driven to Stardom” will be held Sunday, September 28 at 2:00 pm. $5 Suggested

The LJCC Mah Jongg Tournament will be held on Wednesday, October 29 from 10am-3pm. Cost is $30.
