Marcos 10:46 - 5246 En aquel tiempo, al salir Jesús de Jericó en compañía de sus discípulos y de mucha gente, un ciego, llamado Bartimeo, hijo de Timeo, se hallaba sentado al borde del camino pidiendo limosna.

47 Al oír que el que pasaba era Jesús Nazareno, comenzó a gritar: “¡Jesús, hijo de David, ten compasión de mí!”

50 El ciego tiró su manto; de un salto se puso en pie y se acercó a Jesús.

51 Entonces le dijo Jesús: “¿Qué quieres que haga por ti?” El ciego contestó: “Maestro, que pueda ver”.

52 Jesús le dijo: “Vete; tu fe te ha salvado”. Al momento recobró la vista y comenzó a seguirlo por el camino.

Mark 10:46 - 5246 Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.

47 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, Bartimaeus began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.”

48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, he is calling you.”

50 He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.

51 Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.”

52 Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

The gospel today is a very simple story, but quite moving. Bartimeus the blind man sat by the roadside begging. Upon hearing that Jesus was coming by, he began to cry out, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” He persisted even though many rebuked him.

Hoy es el Trigésimo domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. El evangelio de hoy es una historia muy sencilla, pero tiene el poder de mover los corazones. Se trata de un Bartimeo un ciego que se hallaba sentado al borde del camino, pidiendo limosna. Al oír que Jesús pasaba por allí, comenzó a gritar: “¡Jesús, hijo de David, ten compasión de me!” Muchos lo reprendieron para que se callara, pero el seguía gritando todavía mas fuerte.

Jesus called him. “Take courage”, they told him, Jesus is calling. “What do you want me to do for you?” He asked. Bartimeus answered, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way, you faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the way.

Jesús le llamo. “Animo”, le dijeron, Jesús te esta llamando. “Que quieres que haga yo por ti?” Le pregunto. Bartimeo contesto: “Maestro, quiero ver.” Jesús le dijo, “Vete, tu fe te ha salvado.” Y enseguida, recobro la vista, y seguía a Jesús en el camino.

He was the son of Timeaus. St. Augustine has an observation (The Harmony of the Gospels 2.65). He says that when the name of the father is recorded in Mark, it is to be noted that this scarcely occurs in all the many cases of healing performed by the Lord. “Consequently, there can be little doubt that he had fallen from some position of great prosperity, and was now regarded as an object of the most notorious and the most remarkable wretchedness, because in addition to being blind he had also to sit begging.”

Era hijo de Timeo. San Agustín tiene una observación (La Harmonía de los Evangelios 2.65). Dice que cuando el nombre de su Padre es registrado en Marcos, hay que notar que ésta ocurrencia es rara en los muchos casos de curación hechos por el Señor. “Consecuentemente, hay poca duda que él había caído de alguna posición de gran prosperidad, y ahora era considerado como un objeto de la más notoria y más notable miseria, porque además de estar ciego también tenia que pedir limosna.”

In addition, St. Augustine sees this story symbolically. The wretched helplessness of fallen humanity is seen symbolically in the blindness of Bartimeus. Without Jesus, we are indeed blind. We cannot see the purpose for life. We cannot see the dignity of the People of God. We cannot see God’s grand plan for us. When we are blind spiritually, we make many dumb mistakes, and suffer, and cause others to suffer needlessly.

También, San Agustín ve esta historia simbólicamente. La miserable debilitada y arruinada humanidad se ve simbólicamente en la ceguera de Bartimeo. Sin Jesús, en verdad estamos ciegos. No podemos ver el sentido de la vida. No podemos ver la dignidad del Pueblo de Dios. No podemos ver el gran plan de Dios para nosotros. Cuando estamos ciegos espiritualmente, hacemos toda clase de errores, sufrimos, y causamos el sufrir de otros, sin necesidad.

Clement of Alexandria, (Exhortations to the Greeks 11), says “Receive Christ, receive power to see, receive your light, that you may plainly recognize both God and man.” “Shake off forgetfulness of truth, shake off the mist of ignorance and darkness that dims our eyes and contemplate the true God, after first raising the song of praise to him: “All hail, O Light!”

Clemente de Alejandría, (en Exhortaciones a los Griegos 11), dice “Recibe a Cristo, recibe el poder de ver, recibe tu luz, para que puedas reconocer claramente tanto a Dios como al hombre.” “Sacúdete el olvidadizo de la verdad, sacúdete la niebla de la ignorancia y la oscuridad que hace que nuestros ojos no puedan ver y contemplar al verdadero Dios, después de levantar el canto de alabanza hacia Él: “Todo mundo te saluda, O Luz!”

I like to read the early Church Fathers. They were much closer to Jesus in terms of time. Their insights have helped Christians all the way down through history. It is like “priming the pump.” I have to have the humility to say I need all the help I can get, in walking the walk that leads to salvation.

Me gusta leer los Padres Tempranos de la Iglesia. Ellos estaban mucho más cerca de Jesús desde el punto de vista de tiempo. Su punto de vista ha ayudado a los Cristianos desde aquellos tiempos. Es como “Comenzar la pompa.” Hay que ser humildes y decir que necesito toda la ayuda que pueda encontrar, en el camino de la salvación.

St. Mark had an eye for detail. He notes that when Bartimeus hears that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, he raised a storm. He did not waste any time. Immediately he starts to cry out: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” Even though he was rebuked, he cries out all the more, with greater strength. “Son of David, have pity on me!”

San Marcos tenia ojo para el detalle. Noto que cuando Bartimeo se dio cuenta que Jesús de Nazaret iba pasando, levanto una tormenta. No perdió tiempo. Inmediatamente comenzó a gritar: “¡Jesús, Hijo de David, ten compasión de mí!”

I see a practical application when someone said: “Take courage!, Jesus is calling you”. These, are precious words, in the ears of anyone who needs help. If you suffer rejection, or are depressed for whatever reason, remember the good example of that blind man, and the hope and encouragement given him. Don’t hesitate to encourage others. In addition, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Amen!

Yo veo otro punto de aplicación cuando alguien le dijo: “¡Animo! Jesús te llama.” Estas son preciosas palabras en los oídos de cualquiera que necesita ayuda. Si tu sufres el rechazo, o estas deprimido por cualquier razón, recuerda el ejemplo de ese hombre ciego, y la esperanza y él ánimo que se le concedió. No te detengas a animar a otros. Y no te detengas pedir ayuda cuando la necesites. ¡Amen!

Also, note that Jesus said: “Your faith has made you whole.” It is good to pray every day for an increase of faith. Certain passages from the scriptures come to mind. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). In Hebrews 10:35 the writer says: “Do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised.

También, hay que notar que Jesús le dijo: “Tu fe te ha salvado.” Hay que tener fe. “La fe es la certeza de lo que se espera, la convicción de lo que no se ve” (Hebreos 11:1). En Hebreos 10:35 el escritor dice: “No pierdas tu confianza, que tiene una gran recompensa; porque es necesaria la paciencia, para que habiendo hecho la voluntad de Dios, obtengas la promesa.

‘For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and shall not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.’ ” So, hold on to your faith. It has a great reward. Sometimes you see it and sometimes you don’t. That is why you need to trust in the Lord. “Trust in the Lord, and he will act” (Psalm 37:5).

‘Porque aun un poquito, y el que ha de venir vendrá, y no tardara. Mas el justo vive por fe y si retrocediere, no agradara mi alma.’ ” De manera que hay que aferrarse a tu fe. Tiene un gran premio. A veces se ve y a veces no se ve. Por eso se necesita confianza en Dios. “Confía en el Señor, y Él actuara” (Salmo 37:5).

Remember Habakkuk 2:1-4 says, “I will take my stand to watch, and station myself on the tower, (i.e., enter into prayer), and look forth to see what he will say to me… The Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision waits its time, it hastens to the end - it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

Recuerda a Habakkuk 2:1-4 que dice, “Sobre mi guarda estaré, y sobre la fortaleza afirmare el pie, y velare para ver lo que se me dirá. Jehová me respondió, y dijo: Escribe la visión, y declárala en tablas, para que corra el que leyere en ella. Aunque la visión tardara aun por un tiempo, mas se apresura hacia el fin, y no-mentira; Aunque tardare, espérala, porque sin duda vendrá, no tardara. He aquí que aquel cuya alma no es recta, se enorgullece; mas el justo por su fe vivirá” .

The lesson from this passage is that we need to have faith, ask for more faith, and persevere in our faith. All of these are points we need to apply to our daily lives. St. Augustine says that final perseverance is a very special grace. Let us pray that we be there with those who persevere unto the end! Amen! Alleluia! Glory to God!

La lección de estos pasajes es que hay que tener fe, pedir más fe, y perseverar en la nuestra fe. Todos estos son puntos para aplicar en nuestra vida diaria. San Agustín dice que la perseverancia final es una gracia muy especial. ¡ Vamos todos a rezar que estemos allí entre los que perseveran hasta el final ! ¡Amen! ¡Aleluia! ¡Gloria a Dios!
