Albany is absolutely beautiful in the spring! Flowers and trees in full bloom…what a great place to live and raise a family.

March started out with an absolutely gorgeous weekend, and to make it evenmore ideal, on March 1, over 1,280 runners finished the Albany Marathon! What apicture perfect weekend! I would like to thank Rashelle Beasley, her staff and themarathon board for all their hard work in making the marathon an exceptionalevent. It was, as they say, a “chamber of commerce” day!

It took over 1,700 community and business volunteers, along with our majorsponsors Mars Chocolate USA, Phoebe Community Visions, MillerCoors,Mauldin & Jenkins, Darton State College, AT&T and Proctor & Gamble tomake the marathon happen. We are so grateful for your support and we thank youfor always being there for Albany.

I was at the finish line that beautiful Saturday morning and I was amazed athow many people were there cheering the runners on. The attitude was so relaxed,children playing in the park, the Flint River rippling in the background and blue

skies enhanced this perfect day.

I am an avid cyclist and I used to run more than I do now. So, I am taking this opportunity to encourage allof you to start an exercise program this spring. It will improve your health and your attitude. Take it fromme…there is nothing like a good dose of endorphins to get you going!

The SRS Criterium Bike Race is coming back to Downtown Albany! We kickoff this five-race/five-state series.Come out on May 17 and watch this exciting event…it is the NASCAR of cycling! There will also be a road raceon May 18 that is a 34-mile loop through Lee County.

For those wanting to set a running/walking goal, go ahead and signup for the 2015 Albany Marathon and1/2 which will be held March 7. This will give you something to work toward.

Let’s all remember that as we “grow through change,” we need to stick to our ABC’s. They are Attitude,Behavior and Commitment. If we live by these three characteristics we will be a blessing to ourselves and toothers.

While recognized as one of the biggest events Albany and Southwest Georgia see during the year, the annual

Albany Marathon powered by Snickers/Mardi Gras celebration is the kind of community activity that stirs pride of place

and involvement. But, at its very essence, taken on the individual level, the marathon/street party is a collection of sights and sounds and

experiences that offers fun, joy and accomplishment on so many levels.

Albany Marathonhuge success


Yes, the marathon is elite Kenyanrunner Abraham Kogo finishing the26.2 mile course in 2:34.34 to win therace, which has emerged as one of thetop 10 qualifiers for the prestigiousBoston Marathon. But it's also AmyTeague of Gray, Georgia, coming inmore than an hour later to finish hersecond marathon ever.

Yes, the Mardi Gras celebration is anopportunity for talented young artistslike Evan Barber & the Dead Gamblersto showcase their music to a newaudience, but it's also an opportunityfor an impromptu street dance to breakout during Relapse's spirited take onKool & the Gang's "Celebration."

And, yes, area hotels, restaurants andretailers enjoy an uptick in sales thanksto the thousands of visitors who pourinto the region, but just as vital is theoften forgotten hospitality shown bycitizens eager to welcome friendlystrangers into their midst.

"Around mile 23, at maybe thetoughest point in the race, this little girlwas sitting in front of her house,waving at runners and giving water toanyone who wanted it," JasonHowanitz, an engineer fromBirmingham, Alabama, said afterfinishing the marathon. "Man, thatpicked me up so much. Getting thatSolo cup of water from that little girl iswhat I'll remember most about thisrace. I'm convinced this is a great littletown, and I'll be back."

That was the theme throughoutdowntown on March 1 as more than

1,500 runners, who brought alongfamily members and other supporters,marveled at the beauty of the FlintRiver rushing adjacent to the race finishline, lauded volunteers who set upwater stations and formed impromptucheering squads along the course,watched their kids play happily in theunderused Riverfront Park, sat onbenches and took in the history of RayCharles Plaza, filled the seats of theRiverfront Bar-B-Que restaurant, andwatched their kids slip and slidehappily about in popular "waterwalkers" that looked suspiciously likeoversized hamster balls.

These, then, were the sights andsounds of Marathon Weekend 2014:

-- Half-marathon finisher BishopLeatherbury of Atlanta recalling that itwas the 2012 Albany Marathon thatqualified him to run in Boston and hadhim a half-mile from that race's finishline when terrorist bombs exploded,creating a scene of panic andpandemonium.

"We had just run 26 miles and wereonly two-tenths of a mile from thefinish line when about 25 government-issue black sedans went roaring by,followed by a bunch of ambulances,"Leatherbury, 61, an Atlanta businessheadhunter, said after finishing theAlbany half-marathon. "There was somuch confusion, it was hard tocomprehend what was going on."

Leatherbury and others who weredenied the opportunity to finish theBoston race have been invited back for

this year's Patriots Day run on April 21,a fact that might give some pause. Notthis Atlanta runner, though. Asked if hewould take Boston race officials up ontheir invite, Leatherbury said, "Damnedright I'm going back."

-- Walking in the middle of PineAvenue, looking around at all thevendors whose wares were on display,Anne Jackson of Albany's smile waseverpresent. Toddling along in front ofher, their eyes wide with awe, wereJackson's identically-dressedgranddaughters, Cassius and ShonnaHarris, ages 4 and 3, respectively.

"We don't ever miss this, but it's evengreater this year with this weather,"Jackson said. "These two can't wait toget over there and get on those rides."

-- Mack Phillips, who came toAlbany in December to take over asmanager of the M&M Mars plant thatwill celebrate its 50th year in the citythis year, is all smiles as he takes in thescene around him.

"This is my first marathon, and it'samazing to see the community out andbeing such a big part of this," he said."Companywide, we try to give back tothe communities we're in; that's aconstant thing. But it's always nice tobe a part of a big event like this. This isjust an amazing family event, and thelittle kids seem to be having as muchfun as the runners.

"With this weather, it's a great day tobe in Albany."

-- Eric Culbreth, the youngentrepreneur who owns the downtown

Terry Hill was raised in Dawson, GA. Uncle Terry, 62, who now livesin Oakland, California came “home” to run the Albany Marathon.


Cool Scoops ice cream shop, is excitedabout the growing crowd as heprepares for a big day.

"Certainly we expect to have morebusiness with all these peopledowntown, but that's not what this isabout for us," he said. "What today isabout is our community comingtogether. This is something we need alot more of."

-- Leigh McLendon, 22, is one of anumber of runners who got their firsttaste of testing themselves against otherparticipants in the Albany Marathonand Half-Marathon. A student atGeorgia Southwestern State Universityand barista at Starbucks, McLendonwas taken with the turnout for therace/street party.

"It's kind of mind-blowing when youlook around and see all the peoplehere in our community," the Albanynative said. "It was just after dawnwhen they were getting ready to startthe race when I looked around at allthe people there and just couldn'tbelieve it ... not in our town."

-- Dougherty County AdministratorRichard Crowdis sounded like a proudpapa as he talked about the "Wild WestWatering Hole" water station he andother county employees -- includingCounty Commissioners Ewell Lyle,Clinton Johnson and John Hayes --helped set up. Their station, whichincluded live horses, a carriage, a giantcactus, a "jail" that many runnersstopped at to have pictures taken andwestern-themed music such as

"Bonanza" and "The Good, the Bad andthe Ugly," may very well have "set thestandard for future water stations."

"Around 30 or so of our employeesshowed up, and everyone had such agood time," Crowdis said. "We've donethis every year, and we've come upwith themes for our stations such asthe circus, the beach and Mardi Gras.We get together as a group and plan anew theme each year.

"It was amazing the number ofrunners who stopped to have theirpictures taken; there was even a groupof runners who were looking for usbecause they knew we'd havesomething new for them."

-- Camille Teague, 12, of Gray,tagged along to support mom Amy inher second marathon, and afteroccupying herself with a movie on herelectronic device early in the race,Camille made her way to the finish lineas the time for Amy's finish drew near.

"This is my first time in Albany, andit's been really great," Camille said."This is mom's second marathon -- sheran one in Savannah and said it wasreally great -- but I can't imagine itbeing better than it's been here."

-- NASH-FM DJ Jaxon Riley has beena fixture at the Albany Marathon finishline the last several years, calling outthe names of each runner as he or shecrosses the line. It's a labor of love forthe well-known radio personality.

"The hardest thing about it is havingmy voice hold up through calling outthe names of 1,000 runners," he said.

"It's pretty cool to see the 'that's mydad' reactions of folks along the finishline when I call out their names. And,yeah, I botch some of those hardnames, but me and the person runningare the only ones who know it.

"There are always funny little thingsthat happen: This year a lady crossedthe finish line and I said, 'That's so-and-so from Albany, Georgia,' and eventhough she had just finished running26 miles, she flipped toward me andsaid, 'That's Albany, NEW YORK!' Iloved it."

-- Ben Cleveland, owner of BuenaVista-based Grand IllusionEntertainment, had only a slightwindow of opportunity to answer avisitor's questions as a long line of kidswaited their turns to get into his

company's water walkers. He grinnedat the response.

"Yeah, we've been coming here all13 years, so we've had ups anddowns," he said. "Last year's weatherwas awful, and that was a bad day, buttoday looks like it's going to be great."

With that, he rushed off to get thenext excited tyke ready for her turn onthe water.

-- Neal Robertson's doctor told himto give up running in favor of a bicycleto save wear and tear on his knees. Butthe civilian Marine who works atMarine Corps Logistics Base-Albanycan't find it in himself to give up thefeeling he gets with each long run.

"It's hard for me not to run now," the52-year-old said. "When I'm running,there's a freedom I don't get from any

other activity. I think and I pray; it's allmeditation."

Robertson ran the half-marathon thisyear, although he has completed theAlbany Marathon in the past, one oftwo successful 26.2-mile runs. Theother was the Marine Marathon inAfghanistan, where he served insupport of the nation's war-fighters.

"Running here is so much better --the course is great, and there's not allthat heat and sand to deal with," hesaid. "Plus, it's awesome the way ourcommunity comes together every yearfor this event. We welcome peoplefrom all over the country and do agood job of making them feel athome."

Albany Marathonand Half Marathonhad another successfulyear with 1509registered runners with1280 of those asfinishers. 20% of therunners qualified for theBoston Marathon. We

had 40 states represented with international runnersfrom Canada, Venezuela, Austria, and UnitedKingdom.

Runners Comments

— This was my first marathon and it was a greatexperience. The volunteers were incredible! Thecheck in was easy and the folks didn't make fun ofme when I came back five times to ask morequestions. Every aid station was staffed by superencouraging, friendly and helpful people. My pacerfor the 4:10 group kept pushing and pulling me alongdown the stretch. Text updates throughout the raceenabled my family to cheer me on at strategic times.The motel (Wingate) let us check out at 2:00 with noextra charge. All in all it was a fabulous experience.

— I came from Iowa to run the half marathon andhave to say that you have the most amazing supportpeople and spectators ever! I felt the love everysingle mile!! Thanks for a fabulous race.

The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce was invited to comeby and meet the students at one of the Collegiate Challengebuilds for Flint River Habitat for Humanity. While there wetalked to some of the students/builders and David Wilson,Family Service Coordinator, who filled us in on theseamazing statistics.

• Students are already requesting to sign up for 2015.

• Habitat received nominations for three different weeksfor best Collegiate challenge host affiliate in the USA.This was recognized by Habitat International.

• Habitat hosted almost 400 students each year.

• Habitat has a high repeat rate of schools…some even3peats.

• Students come from as far as Canada and schools comefrom all over the USA, such as: Iowa, Illinois, NewEngland University, Harvard University, Boston Collegeand Illinois Tech University.

“We are highly recognized by students for the lodging, meals,and the community experience they receive. On a sad notewe have to turn multiple groups away because we fill up sofast. Students think we are top drawer and want to be a partof our builds,” David said.
