Happy March everyone! I am not sure if the old adage about March coming

in as a lamb or a lion has a chance because our winter has been so up and

down this year. One day it may be like a lamb, but the next day may be like

a lion. But, we have been fortunate this year because we have not had to be

inside that often for recess. Most of the students would much rather be out-

side getting some fresh air even if it is a little brisk at times. A special

thanks to the paras that brave the weather to be outside with the students.

I hope that everyone took the time to really emphasize the importance of

reading during February for reading month, and how one’s ability to read

has a big effect on most of the things we do in life. Read-

ing is not only something we should do during reading

month but always. I hope that everyone enjoyed reading

month. I know the students enjoyed the different activi-

ties we had during reading month. All the time your

child/ren spend reading will help us reach our school im-

provement goal in reading comprehension. Thank you to

all the parents/guardians that were able to attend

“Pancakes with the Parents Breakfasts” and our family literacy day activity.

It is great to have you in the school. I know the students are very happy and

proud when you join us for these activities. We will be having an author visit

by John Steven Gurney, author and illustrator, on Friday, March 13 at 12:30

p.m. at TRE.

On February 13th at 10:30 a.m., Dakota Assemblies was here to present

“Magic Man Rusty”. The student seemed to enjoy the presentation a lot.

They were very attentive and respectful. The presentation taught the stu-

dent to follow your dreams and to know that each of us is special in our own

way. A few of the students had the opportunity to assist the presenter per-

form his magic tricks with the emphasis on believing in oneself. The stu-

dents did a great job paying attention and being respectful.

The third quarter ends March 13th, and the report

cards will be ready for conferences. Parent-

Teacher Conferences at TRE will be March

16th and 17th from 3:30 to 7:00 pm each day.

Please watch for conference slips coming home

with your child/ren. If your conference time does

not work with your schedule, please contact the

teacher to reschedule your conference.

All families that will have a child attending pre-

school and/or kindergarten at TRE in the fall

of the 2020-2021 school year, please come to the

office at TRE and register him/her on March 16th

or March 17th during parent-teacher confer-

ences. If you are new to the district you may regis-

ter any time March 16th and 17th by stopping in at

the office. It is important that we get an accurate

count for planning purposes. Even if your child is

in preschool this year, please call the office or stop

at the school office so we know your intentions for

the fall.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each

of the students and their parents that participated

in the fall Reading for Education fundraiser.

Thanks to you we raised close to $225 for our spe-

cial projects account. Some of this money was used

to buy different items for reading month. I am so

appreciative of your support. The spring online

Reading for Education fundraiser is during this

month. It cost nothing to participate. All you will

have to do is supply some email addresses, and we

receive 50 cents for each address. Information will

be sent home around March 9th. I hope that you

choose to participate.

Parents, if there is something happening at home

that may have an adverse effect on your child/ren,

and you think it would be helpful for us to know at

school so we can best help your child/ren, please

let us know. We would like to support your child/

ren, and it would help us understand why there

may be a change in your child/ren. I am not asking

that you give any personal details, but just a

heads up if there is something happening that

would cause stress in your child’s life. A couple

examples might be: a death in the family, an unex-

pected illness, an accident, a parent having to

leave unexpectedly for an extended time, or a loss

of a family pet. At these times your child/ren may

need that extra support

that we could offer. It

may be hard for your

child/ren to stay focused

in school during these

times, so it would give

us a better understand-

ing of what’s going on

with your child.

Oh, tis the season! The window for NDSA testing

opens in March so the students in grade 3 will be

taking the test. The TRE students will be taking

the NWEA assessments again this spring. They

will be taking the

NWEA assessments in

April.

John Steven Gurney is the author and illustrator of the graphic

novel Fuzzy Baseball and the picture book Dinosaur Train.

He has illustrated over 140 chapter books, including the A to Z

Mysteries, the Bailey School Kids, and The Calendar Mys-

teries series. He has illustrated board games, advertising, post-

ers, puzzles, and a shopping bag for the Macy’s Thanksgiving

Day parade. John has worked as a caricature artist from Atlan-

tic City to Las Vegas, and on the streets of New York City, but

primarily in New England.

John grew up in Pennsylvania reading Dr. Seuss books and

watching Bugs Bunny cartoons. As he grew older his reading

material shifted to Mad Magazine, and then to JRR Tolkein

(but he never stopped watched Bugs Bunny cartoons). He stud-

ied illustration at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and received

his MFA in Illustration from the Hartford Art School.

John loves visiting schools to talk about illustration. Since 2002

he has visited schools in 31 different states, and five countries.

John lives in Brattleboro, Vermont with his wife Kathie. He has

used more than 40 people from his town to pose as characters

for his books. He loves running and cycling, except when there’s

too much snow, in which case he cross country skis and plays

SPRING ACTIVITIES It is time to begin Spring events including Track and Field, Speech, Acalympics, Math Counts and Music Competitions. We

welcome all the learning activities as we support students with their talents.

RESILIENCE A resilience program was established Fall 2018 and is one of our school improvements goals for social-emotional learning. The

program focuses on teaching students to become a stronger society by participating in educational events and activities fo-

cused on resilience. Haley Wolfe, Miss North Dakota, joined 7-12 grade on February 24th to further educate students on resili-

ence. Ms. Wolfe’s message focused on Kindness, Communication, Suicide Prevention, Responsibility, and Supporting Others.

We want to thank Miss North Dakota for focusing on student social-emotional needs in today’s society.

Parent –Teacher Conferences are Coming Up! Parent-teacher conferences will be held March 16th and 17th after school. The Richardton-Taylor High School has student-led

conferences which take place at an appointed time and includes the student, parents or guardians, and a homeroom teacher

that supported the student in preparing for the conference. I want to stress the importance of student-led conferences in

providing consistent support by both teachers and parents/guardians.

If a student and parent/guardian misses a student-led conference, students will be scheduled to meet with the secondary prin-

cipal to provide students with a student-led conference. In meeting student and parent needs, we are providing both the stu-

dent-led conference and time allotted where parents-guardians may visit with classroom teachers.

During student-led conferences, students will show and explain their learning and progress in their courses. Students will

also review their Star Reading and Star Math test scores. While reviewing test score information, students will be able set

goals for 4th quarter assessment. Spring North Dakota State Assessment will also take place in March and April. The Raider

education community is working together in supporting students to progress in areas needed for future preparation according

to grade level and college readiness. 7-12 grade students are encouraged to work with their teachers regarding areas that stu-

dents can strengthen by asking instructors for guidance and learning objectives that students may practice. Support your

child/children by communicating interest in student levels of achievement.

The Star Reading and Star Math Scores for 4-12 grade are displayed in the Library Hallway. Spring NDSA scores will also be

posted in this location for future reference.

Please take some time to review the chart during parent-teacher conferences as you come through the school.

I want to thank you, parents, for participating in the school conferences, school surveys and supporting your child’s education.

Your feedback has been helpful in shaping the student learning needs and providing better supports throughout the district.

Senior parents: Remember

to file your FAFSA as soon as

possible if you have a senior heading to college. Local scholarships will be arriv-

ing soon. I will make sure all eligible seniors will receive copies.

All students seeking the ND CTE Scholarship will need to take three ACT

Workkeys exams to qualify. All eligible seniors have received this information

and should schedule testing times with me.

Junior parents: Please encourage your child to study for the ACT exam.

Many students qualify for college scholarships based on their ACT score. Stu-

dents also need to receive an 18 on the English section and 22 on the math sec-

tion, or they may have to take remedial courses their senior year. Please stop

ger hunt and a pirate skit. Parents are invited

to join their child for a fun STEM activity.

The STEM activities are based around pirate

themes. Students’ accelerated reading points

The Richardton-Taylor School Board approved the 2020-21 school calendar

at the February meeting. You will find a copy of the calendar in this news-

letter and on our website.

During the last legislative session, ND lawmakers changed the language

from days to hours in the law that regulates school calendars. The legisla-

tive intent was to allow school districts more flexibility with their calen-

dars, and not to reduce the number of school days.

Originally, the law stated that schools had to be in session for 175 days, and an instructional

day had to be a minimum of 6 hours, which equates to 1,050 hours per year. Schools that op-

erated on a 6.5-hour school day (1,137.5 hours per year) were allowed one “grace day” for a

storm day and could also use the additional hours to reconfigure instructional days, with the

Department of Public Instructions approval. Districts were not allowed to use the additional

hours for storm make up days because of the language of the law.

Our school district operates on 6.5-hour day, and several years ago we did reconfigure our in-

structional days from 175 to 168 instructional days to provide 7 professional develop-

ment/teacher collaboration days during the school year. Even after we reconfigured our in-

structional days to 168 days or 1,092 hours, we were still over the minimum requirement by

42 hours or 6.5 days.

The law now states that schools must be in session for 1,050 hours per year. This simple lan-

guage change allows school districts more flexibility and local control. The legislatures also

added an additional teacher professional development day into the law.

A school calendar shall include:

• 1,050 instructional hours;

• 3 holidays, as selected by the board in consultation with district teachers;

• No more than two days for parent/teacher conferences or compensatory time for parent/teacher

conferences held outside of regular school hours; and

• At least three days of professional development

Our 2020-21 school calendar has 1,092 instructional hours, the same as last year. However,

we now have the flexibility of banking the additional 42 hours and using them as needed.

Why 1,092 hours? Because our reconfiguration of instructional days was based on 1,092

hours and dropping below that would create issues with teacher contracts and negatively af-

fect classified staff salaries.

A huge thank you to the calendar committee for creating the 2020-21 school calendar. Mr.

Bohn, Mrs. Poswilko, Mrs. Skaley, Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. Stanek, Mrs. Dohrmann and Mrs.

Christensen, your time and effort is very much appreciated.

The Richardton-Taylor Public School District #34 Board of Education is seeking individuals to fill one

position for a three-year term beginning the July 2020. One candidate will be elected to represent “rural”

population. Interested candidates shall also file a statement of interest and affidavit of candidacy as re-

quired by section 16.1-09-02. The document must be filed with the school district business manager, or

mailed to and in the possession of the business manager, by four p.m. on April 6, 2020. Forms can be

obtained from the RT PSD Business Manager by calling 701-974-2111.

All basketball players in grades 7-11 grade are invit-

ed to a fundamentals clinic two nights a week start-

ing in March.

On January 24 Katelynn Cabot and Eden Bartz traveled to Univer-

sity of North Dakota to partake in an Honor Band/Honor Choir fes-

tival in which they both were selected through live audition. Both

rehearsed for 2 ½ days and were a part of the final concert on Sun-

day, January 26. Congratulations to both girls for being selected.

On Monday, March 16 the band students will participate in Instrumental day at DSU. We have many students

getting solos, and ensembles ready for this big day. Not only do we have solos and ensembles preparing, but

also the High School Band prepares 2 songs to be adjudicated on as well. Best of Luck to all band members and

their efforts to do their very best, and hopefully move on to the State level in May.

Congratulations goes out to Eden Bartz for being selected through live audition to participate in the Treble

Choir for All-State. This year All-State will be held on March 22, 23, & 24 at the Civic Center in Bismarck. All

groups for All-State practice together for 2 ½ days culminating in a final concert to be held on Tuesday, March

24. This is Eden’s 4th year being selected and will also receive a 4-year plaque for her endeavors. Again, Con-

gratulations Eden, we are very proud of you.

Killdeer Music Festival will be held on Saturday, March 28 at Killdeer High School. This festival is for grades

5 – 8 band and choir students. Again, we have many students preparing solos and ensembles to be adjudicated

that day. More information will go out to parents closer to festival time. Best of Luck to these students on

their hard work.

There’s no April fooling.........the High School Vocal day IS Wednesday, April 1, at the Abbey in Richardton.

Both solos, ensembles and the High School Choir will perform that day. Solos and ensembles will compete with

other schools in hopes to make it to the State Music Competition to be held on Saturday, May 2 at Bismarck

State College. Best of Luck to all students in hopes of making it to state.

As you can see, we have lots of music events happening in March and we are very proud of all of our student's

hard work and dedication to our department. Parents and community members are welcome to come out and

watch any of these exciting events.
