District News 2018 District C Elections

One essential function of our annual convention is the opportunity to elect our new leaders for the

following year and to make changes to our constitution and bylaws. This year the voter will receive

3 ballots. The first ballot will be to elect the MD19 Council Chair and Vice Council Chair for 2018-2019. The second ballot will be to elect our District 19 C District Governor, 1st Vice District Governor

and 2nd Vice District Governor for 2018-2019. The 3rd ballot will be to approve or reject bylaws

changes submitted by the By-Laws Committee.

Here are some things to watch for at your club level. Each club secretary will be notified by the end

of February of the proposed By-Laws changes. If you are going to be a certified delegate to vote at

the election, make sure you read these proposed changes. The secondly, watch for the delegate

forms being mailed to your club secretary. Each club receives a specified number of delegate forms

based on the number of members they have. Only club delegates who have been certified at the

convention can vote.

Certification process changes: This year our district is following the same certification and voting

process used at the national and multiple district level. Certification will happen during the same

time as the voting. This will be from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM on April 28, 2018, at the Bremerton Con-

vention Center.

Call for election process helpers: If you would like to volunteer to assist with the election and ballot counting process while at the convention please contact me. I am looking for 2 people to work from 2:45 to 5:00 on Saturday afternoon, April 28, 2018.

You can look for more election information in the April edition of the district newsletter.

Are Your Dues Payments Up to Date? Clubs which owe money to LCI or MD19 will not receive ballot authorizations from MD19. This means that clubs with dues in arrears will not be able to have voting representatives to cast ballots at the District C convention. It is highly recommended that your club submit monies you owe to both MD19 and LCI prior to March 15, to ensure that you will be credited on time.

MD 19 Youth Exchange

Hosts are needed for this summer for several youths visiting from Europe. Two applications are in hand and at least four more are expected. In hand are applications from a girl and a boy from Germany. We have received inquiries from Finland and Italy. At this time, we are looking for hosts throughout MD19 so that the youths can visit both in Canada and the U.S. If you would like to receive information about the program and the youths, contact PDG George Robison at [email protected] or 253-853-2721.

Are you going to the LCI International Convention in Las Vegas?

Lion Geneal Palmer has a spare bedroom at a condo and is looking for another woman to share the condo. She has stayed there before and the unit is well furnished with a kitchen and living room al-so. It is only about $200 for the week so much more affordable than to stay on the strip. When she stayed in Vegas before, she bought basics and ate breakfast in the unit every day as well as some oth-er meals.

Legacy Three Centennial Challenge Lakewood First Lions Club

In 1999, Lakewood First Lions Club member Police Chief Larry Saunders and Caring for Kids founder Di-

ane Formoso stood in a tiny dirt park in the community of Springbrook. The park was the site of drug

dealing, prostitution, and a fatal shooting. Parents did not allow their children to play in this park. Diane

and Larry determined that taking the park away from criminals and creating a safe place for children to

play would be a long-term goal and project of the Lakewood First Lions Club.

Springbrook is an economically deprived and isolated area of Lakewood Washington where 82% of the

4300 residents are below the HUD poverty level. The area is marked by high transiency, and mostly mul-

ti-complex rental housing and trailer parks.

Lakewood First Lions Club has made Springbrook their major focus since 1999, working multiple pro-

jects to engage Springbrook residents in building a strong community and improving the quality of their

neighborhood. The club contributed $20,000 to the City of Lakewood to assist with park renovations

and purchasing surrounding drug den properties which were torn down.

The Springbrook community has continued to evolve and flourish thanks to many partnerships. The

Lakewood First Lions Club has welcomed assistance from the Lakewood and Clover Park Rotary clubs as

well as local Kiwanis and grants from the Lakewood Community Foundation. We have enjoyed seeing

this tiny community build their coalition that enables them to now apply for grant monies in small
