My goodness, February was a great month full of

exciting learning activities at Meadows School! On Febru-

ary 5, we celebrated a very successful 2nd Annual Mead-

ows Culture Day. Some students were heard saying that “I

felt like I have traveled around the world in one day.” It

was a great way to celebrate and showcase rich cultural

diversity within our Meadows School Community.

We also had a very successful Book Fair and Science/

Interest Fair, showcasing many excellent student research

projects. For ‘I Love to Real’ Week we had special guest

readers: Mayor Rick Chrest, BSD Trustee Pat Bowslaugh,

Fire Fighter Sarah Peto, BU President Dr. Gervan Fearron

and Westman Immigration CFO Richard Bruce read their

favourite children’s book to our students.

REGISTRATION REMINDERS

There are still too many parents parking or making

U-turns on the crosswalk, or stopping to drop off kids in

non-stopping zones.

This is becoming a huge safety concern,

as patrols/kids cannot see to cross.

Staff and by-law officers have been instructed to report

licence plate numbers of drivers ignoring the warning

signs.

Let’s work together for the safety of all. Thank you.

RE: SOCIAL MEDIA CONCERNS

Please be advised that the School Resource Officers (SROs) with the Brandon Police Service have been involved in several com-

plaints involving the use of Social Media programs over the past year. This has involved a number of the students in our school

Division.

These complaints involve the sending and receiving of naked or sexually revealing pictures of students under the age of 18 years,

as well as threatening and bullying text messages. These matters have been brought to the attention of our Crown Attorney and

we have carried out a review of the legal authority and responsibilities of the students and the owners (the parents) of the elec-

tronic devices.

We strongly advise and urge parents to be diligent and monitor their children’s activities on their devices. The activities which

form these incoming complaints very often are the basis for charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, such as: Possession,

Making and Distribution of Child Pornography, Uttering Threats, Luring and Criminal Harassment. A simple example of this: a

child who takes a naked/sexually revealing picture (“pic”) of someone they know (or should have known) to be under the age of

18 and knowingly keeps it on their phone may be liable under the Criminal Code of Canada for Possession of Child Pornogra-

phy. If that child sends this picture to others, he or she has then distributed the image and is chargeable for Distribution of Child

Pornography.

The Brandon Police Service SROs are hoping to meet with teachers and students throughout the next few months in a proactive

initiative to inform and educate all students who are using iPhones and other electronic devices about the seriousness of charges.

These charges could have an impact on future employment, schooling and travel abroad. The SROs do not want to see any stu-

dent charged for a criminal offense because of a lack of knowledge. We are hoping students will actively participate and ask any

questions they have about this important issue.

If anyone has any questions or further concerns regarding this issue please don’t hesitate to contact the BPS SROs.

Scholastic Book Fair 2015 was a big

SUCCESS! Meadows Library hosted a Book Fair on February 19

th

and sold $4606.00 worth of product! That was a $500 in-

crease over last year’s fair. Thank you everyone for spend-

ing to add books to our library!

Winner of the $25 family draw was Carter Gray. There

were also 22 winners of door prizes (one from each class)

and each classroom teacher chose $25 worth of books for

their class. The library also chose $900 worth of books to

add to our inventory and still ended up with a further

$600 to spend before the end of the school year!

I could not have run the Book Fair without the help of

the 20 Grade 7/8 Volunteers who were awesome. They

each rec’d a $10 credit as payment and had fun spending

that.

There were 3 books purchased parents through the

Wish List program and so Miss Arthur, Mrs. DeDecker and

Mr. MacDonald’s class each rec’d a book from their list.

Thanks to the Jones and Klassen families!

Battle of the Books 2015! Grade 7/8 students have been reading from six select-

ed titles since early January. Mrs. Lee has been popping

into 7/8 classrooms to encourage students to keep read-

ing at least four to six titles. The grade 7/8 classroom

teachers have each read one of the titles to their classes,

so progress is rolling along! There was a “bag lunch”

book talk at noon on Wednesday, February 25 for inter-

ested students who wanted to discuss the books.

Dates for the Battle have changed….

Deadline to complete reading is now March 18th, then

teams of four will be formed and the Battle Date will be

Thursday, March 26th

during the afternoon in the Gym.

Teams will have to correctly answer trivia about the six

titles.

Each student taking part will receive a door prize and

the winning team receives Meadows Medals!!!

Keep reading if you are not quite finished your four titles!

A child is being bullied or victimized when he or

she is exposed repeatedly and over time, to direct or

indirect negative actions on the part of one or more

other students.

Direct negative actions can be

verbal (threatening, taunting, teasing,

calling names) or physical (hitting,

pushing, kicking, pinching, restraining).

Indirect negative actions include

social isolation, gossiping, spreading

rumors, gestures and intentionally

excluding someone from a group.

Bike Race for Cerebral Palsy The Youth Revolution will be taking part in the West-

man Cerebral Palsy Stationary Bike Race on

March 21, 2015 at the Towne Centre

Our team will riding in support of a young lady in our

grade 5 class at Meadows who has Cerebral Palsy. We will

be having a Hot Dog Lunch fundraiser for lunch stu-

dents on March 13, 2015 to raise money for this great

cause!
