TheNations’Cupistheonlycompetitionin which nations are represented byselected teams. Each team consistsoffourhorse/ridercombinationsanda Chef d’Equipe. Each member willjumpone roundoveracourseof12obstacles.Thebestthreescoresareadded together for the first roundtotal. The top six teams return inreverse order of their first-roundplacingtojumpasecondroundovertheidenticalcourse.Firstandsecondroundtotalsarethenaddedtogethertodeterminetheultimatewinner.Intheeventofequalityoffaults,ajump-offtakes placewith one rider per teamselectedbytheChefd’Equipe.
Nations’ Cup
A Parcours de Chasse is a speedcompetition which the horse/ridercombination typically negotiatesone roundwith speed becoming thedeterminingfactoroverall.Thewinnerofthecompetitionwillbethepairofathleteswhocrossthefinishlinewiththe least faultsandthe fastest timeover the one round. In the Parcoursde Chasse, knockdowns (faults) areconverted into seconds, making itpossibleforafasthorsethathasaraildowntostillwintheevent.Solookfor the turns to become tighter andthe pace quicker once the rail falls.Obviously,thebestroutetowinisstillafastclearround,butanythinggoeswhenspeedisthenameofthegame.

The Derby is the decathlon of the show jumping world. Just as thedecathlontestsendurance,speedandskillintrackandfield,sodoestheDerbyfortheshowjumper.TherearetwomajorderbyeventsinNorthAmerica;bothareheldatSpruceMeadows.BoththeseeventsofferthesamedegreeofdifficultyastherenownedHamburgDerbyofGermanyandEngland’sHicksteadDerby.Likethedecathlon,withitssetscheduleofevents,theDerbycourseneverchangesfromyeartoyear.Thecoursefeaturesalmosttwicethenumberofobstacles,suchasthebanks,thewater jump and the notorious Devil’s Dyke. Victory is difficult, andusuallythecoursedesigneranticipatesthatlessthan10%ofthefieldwillreturnforajump-off.Jump-offsarerareintheDerbyandapairofclearroundsfromafieldoffortywouldbebothunusualandimpressive,soenjoyitifithappens.

OneofthemostexcitingeventsinshowjumpingistheDoubleSlalom,aspeedcompetitionwithadifference.TheDoubleSlalombreaksfromtraditioninthatitistheonlyeventinshowjumpingthataskstwohorsestocompeteinthesameringatthesametime.Eventhemostseasonedcompetitors,unfazedbybands,crowdsandformidableobstacles,rarely(ifever)encounteranotherhorseoncourse,muchlessthunderingalongbesideit.Thatsaid,intheDoubleSlalomthehorsestravelsidebysidethroughmirrorimagecourses,poundingtothefinishline.Thewinnerthenadvances to thenext round,only twohorse/rider combinationsremain.The lastdash tovictory is fullof intensityandonehundredpercentexcitement.

Calgary, the fifth largest municipality in Canada, began as a smallcommunity in 1875when the NorthWestMounted Police (N.W.M.P.)builtapermanentpostattheconfluenceoftheBowandElbowRivers.Economicdevelopmentoftheareawastriggeredin1882bythearrivaloftherailway,andCalgarywasquicklyestablishedasanagricultural
