From the Oval Office

As I sit here at 3:00 AM on March 1st having woken from a sound sleep in a cold sweat realizing I have not

submitted my article for Steve’s monthly publication (a/k/a The JPC Newsletter) I realize I’m once again guilty

of forgetting my responsibility as President. Perhaps it is the brittle temperatures that have frozen my brain.

In any event, I dragged myself to the computer to pen a few thoughts.

Our February meeting resulted in few casualties but the usual ruffled feathers. A spirited discussion of the

results of our annual survey was led by our intrepid VP Joyce Pavelko. For those of you who haven’t received

Page 2: March 2015 - JerseypineCruisers.org · 2017. 4. 28. · If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to Joe, my

the results due to lack of an email address, I’m sure we can get you a copy. Some good thoughts on how we

can make our club even better were revealed.

This will be my last communication as President (and my last middle of the night emergency communication).

As I look back it hasn’t been all that bad a year. On the membership front we have added three new members

and three prospective members…as of last Tuesday. That won’t set the world on fire but it is moving in the

right direction. On that subject, it was decided to promote our club to area riders by sponsoring coffee and

pastry at the final two Des Plaines Honda seminars to be held later this month. It would be nice to see a

contingent of our members at those events. And no there won’t be any fresh scones amongst the pastries.

Check the Des Plaines Honda website for dates and details of the meetings.

There certainly haven’t been any mild days that promote riding and the roads are white with salt. But the

days are actually getting longer and Spring is just around the corner, or so I am informed by the weather man.

And with Spring there will be new events and riding opportunities galore. This year we will have a group

heading to Washington for the Rolling Thunder weekend as well as a “Lost in the Mountains" (a/k/a 2015

Backroads Boogie) week long outing lead by Mr. Graff. There will be campouts and mini-golf and Cager

events as well.

Speaking of Cager events there is one coming up on March 14th of this month; and also don't forget that the

annual Installation Dinner is scheduled for March 21st at the Rose Garden. Again forgive the addled brain the

hour is unforgiving. It should be a lot of fun and you don’t have to wear extra layers due to the weather.

Check around for a group that might need a fourth for their car load. And Sunday morning breakfast is just the

place to find a ride.

Well, that’s about all that I can pull out of the hat on this brutally cold evening. Hope this article makes the

publication. I wouldn’t blame Steve if he went to press without me. See you all at McDonalds or at the Rose

Garden on Sunday. Ride safe...or for you faint of heart who aren’t riding…be safe.

Mike, President

Cold Weather Motorcycle Riding – Yes, it can be done!

If you want to extend your motorcycle riding season, there are ways to defend yourself against the cold so you

can still enjoy your ride. If snow is on the way or covering the roads, wait until the forecast and the streets are

clear, and then try these ways to stay warm:

Block the wind.

A tall windscreen set to the highest position will provide protection from cold wind. If your bike doesn’t have

one, even mounting a small windshield on your handlebars will help by diverting the wind from your chest. Be

Page 3: March 2015 - JerseypineCruisers.org · 2017. 4. 28. · If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to Joe, my

sure to wear a tightly sealed helmet with a fog-free face shield.

Layer exterior garments.

It’s best to wear a full coverage jacket and pant combo or suit that’s water and wind proof. Wear gauntlet-

style gloves that fit over your jacket. Choose boots that are also wind and waterproof. Make sure they’re

above the ankle and that they’re not too tight, which can reduce circulation and make your feet colder. If you

ride often in cold weather, you may want to invest in some of the electric gear available for vests, jackets,

pants and gloves.

Prepare your bike.

If your bike is water-cooled, make sure the antifreeze is fresh and check that all hoses are in good shape. Use

tires with sufficient tread and check tire pressure before every ride. Consider heated grips and a heated seat

for your bike if you don’t already have them.

Stay hydrated and fed.

Cold, dry air can draw moisture from your body so drink lots of water. Make sure you don’t skip any meals

before you ride. Your body generates heat as you digest which will help you keep warm..

Play it safe.

Ride only when the temperatures allow you to stay warm with the gear you wear. Make sure no skin is

exposed, or it will be at risk of frostbite. If you start to feel like you are being pricked by needles, it’s time to

get off your bike and warm up. Make it a rule to pull over and take a break whenever you start to feel cold or

sluggish, or if you start to shiver. Have a warm beverage and a snack or meal. A short walk can also help warm

you up.

View From the Side

Congratulations to the newly elected Board for 2015! At the February membership meeting, the following

people were elected to office: Shirlee Velazquez, Hermin Velazquez, Don Kusch, Don Malina, Bill Mumford

and Mike Lisciandrello. They deserve our gratitude for volunteering to be on the Board and they deserve our

support in the coming year.

I would like to thank the outgoing Board for their support this year. While it has been a difficult year for me

personally, it has been my pleasure to be on the Board. I have served with a great group of people and

appreciate the efforts of Joe Fiedler, George Gauss, Joyce Pavelko, Hermin Velazquez, Shirlee Velazquez, and

Mike O’Malley.

The Cager event is coming up in March. The starting point is the McDonald’s in Hoffman Estates on March

14th at 9 a.m. Teams will be leaving every two minutes following a route with special clues and occasional

tasks to complete. The end point will be Sideouts Bar and Eatery in Island Lake for corned beef & cabbage. All

the details are on the website. Call Shirlee with your team members to register your team by March 7th. This

is a fun non-motorcycle team event!

The following weekend on March 21st, the Installation Dinner will be held. This year the event will be at the

Rose Garden in Elk Grove Village. Cocktails will be from 6:00-7:00 PM and a dinner buffet will be served at

7:00 PM. The award presentation and installation of the new Board will follow at 8:00 PM. The evening will

conclude with dancing to Lenny D. Let Mike O’Malley know that you will be there!

See you down the road…

Florida woman stops alligator attack with a small Beretta pistol

This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What is the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself? A Beretta Jetfire testimonial.... Here is her story in her own words:

"While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside of The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to Joe, my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took..

The 'gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my collection! Plus the amount I saved in lawyer’s fees was really incredible.

Happy Valentine's Day Steve, Joe and myself went to the Oil, Tire, and Battery seminar last Saturday at Des Plaines Honda. It was informative, as usual. When it was over they had some giveaways. At the end they passed out tickets for a drawing for a couple of items. I was at the end of our row of seats so Steve gave me the last ticket. (He could have given me the other ticket...his choice.) I won one (1) Dunlop tire. I was given a registration card to fill out and mail to Dunlop. I can

order any tire I want and it will be delivered to my front door. Since Lynn uses Dunlops I will order a back tire for her bike and use it the next time she needs tires. So I thought "is this great or what!" (since it was Valentine's day). When I got home I walked into the house and yelled "HAPPY VALENTINES DAY. I JUST BOUGHT YOU A NEW BACK TIRE FOR YOUR BIKE! ISN'T THIS GREAT!!! She didn't buy it. So I did the next best thing...I blamed it on Steve since he gave me the winning ticket. That did not work either. The next day (Sunday) at breakfast LYNN THANKED STEVE FOR THE "GREAT" VALENTINES DAY PRESENT HE GAVE HER. Of COURSE HE SAID "YOU'RE WELCOME" AND TOOK ALL THE CREDIT. Choose your friends wisely.
