THE MASKED REVIEWPeter Knight - Black Snow

SHEPPARD

@

SUGARLAND

The Masked ReviewVocals and an acoustic guitar , what can you expect ?? More thanyou know .

As soon as you press the play button, the voyage through thestripped back acoustic EP Black Snow begins. Nowhere to hide, the airy acoustic guitar demands attention with the introduction ofAching Bones. The vocals soon enter, a dark whisky tone with astory to tel l .

God Only Knows as well as How Long certainly leave youpondering the bigger questions in l ife.

With the final strum of Lightning Without Thunder a sense ofdespair and guilt gathers on your shoulders, however with al lheartbreak , what better way to recover then by grabbing 3 ShotsOf Bundaberg Rum and tapping your feet along to a clever l ittleblues number.

There is something very appealing when listening to a collection ofsongs exposed to the bare basics and feeling an overwhelmingconnection to the musical ity and talent of an amazingsinger/songwriter. Peter Knight is no exception.

Gig ReviewBrisbane pop 6-piece Sheppard have become one of 201 3’sbreakout radio acts with sing-a-long hit “Let Me Down Easy” ignitingairwaves both at home in Austral ia and abroad.

Sheppard was started by Amy Sheppard, who recruited her brotherGeorge back from acting school in Sydney to get a band going, mostly after hearing him sing in the shower and trying outharmonies together. Their other sister Emma plays bass andharmonises beautiful ly with the other two. Jay Bovino was broughtin as a songwriter and guitarist, with Michael Butler and DeanGordon fi l l ing in the gaps.

Their latest single, Let Me Down Easy, has enjoyed success bothhere at home and in the U.S. I t was recently certified platinum inAustral ia, with over 70,000 sales. Their new single, Geronimo, isdue to be released on 1 8 March, and when I spoke with George, hesaid he hopes it wil l blow things out of the water. Sheppard havereleased 5 tracks over the last 2 years, getting ready for their debutalbum to be released mid 201 4.

The gig at Sugarland Tavern on Saturday 22 March was a blast! Alarge stage was in place, with the Corporate AV crew handling l ightsand sound (great job, guys!). The crowd swelled quickly between9pm and 9:30pm, with over 200 there for the show. The support act was Nat Dunn working with an acoustic guitarist onstage, and that ladies voice was a pleasure to hear. Strong andvibrant, Nat sounds l ike she would be at home with almost anygenre.

Sheppard took the stage around 1 0:30pm, launching straight into ahigh energy song and continued down that vein for the whole show.Of course, Let Me Down Easy had the crowd jumping but so didmost other numbers. The seemingly effortless three partharmonies from the Sheppard sibl ings were a pleasure to hear, andthe swapping of instruments from drums to keyboard to mandolinfrom George and Amy, who also alternate as lead singer / frontperson made it as exciting for the eyes as it was for the ears. Agreat, tight 6 piece band performance is always a pleasure toexperience.
